After watching one video after another with different fixes I was about to loosen the evaporator box on my '01 Ram. Used your technique and it worked perfectly. Huge time and trouble saver. To describe it I would say put the heater core pivot lines close to the firewall holes. Angle the core vertically with the top at about the 10 o'clock position while keeping it in line with the with the box opening. Insert the lower left corner of the core into the box as low as it will go. Then pivot the core to the upright position. It takes a little pushing and pulling to clear the right edge of the box but it will go. Adjust the lines to fit exactly in the holes and push them through, then push the core down into the box. Lines should pivot while pushing down. Thanks!!!
Glad it helped this is the exact reason i made the video as i got tired of finding all the hack ways
Could you possibly remove the dash top? And then not remove the dash? I have this coming up on mine, but heat in the south in july is not a big need
Its all one piece unless yours is busted
Aa!
Know I’m a bit late to the party but dose anyone know if you need to get air out of the coolant system after doing this by burping it or something? I’d assume the new core would have air in it witch would be back cycled into the coolant system any help would be appreciated
I just replace the heater core in my 2002 3500 ram the way you did it. Thanks for the video.
Glad i could help i hope u hit that thumbs up for me
Bro, you just saved me 3 hours of pain getting the new heater core into position. Put it in EXACTLY how you did. Thanks man!!
Glad i could help
Being a heavy duty diesel mech, its nice seeing someone doing it the right way, sometimes i dont think people try so they cut for the easy rout, good job man.
Thank you I'm all for trying it the right way first and finding the quickest possible way to do it the right way honestly I find that most of the time it is not that hard to do it the correct way but like you said I don't think people even try do you enjoy my videos please hit the like button and feel free to subscribe
I went back and forth between my truck and this video....kept saying "nah nah I don't think that will work".....I was wrong. It worked. Thank you sir for saving me hours of work
Glad it helpped
Good job, thanks for the vid it was helpful. Trying to do this for my daughter before she gets back from deployment in Romania.
Good luck let me know how you fair
My Nova heater core lasted 35 years, they just dont make stuff like they used too. I just wanted to say, "TRUE THAT BRO" and i am enjoying this video. Thanks for making it. I would rather watch a vid and do it myself than pay the dealership or car repair shop ungodly amounts of money. Sincerely, Thanks, man. Take-Care. Mike.
Worked great on my 01 5.9 Ram also. Pointed a bright light in the engine compartment at the firewall to help navigate the pivot lines into the holes. MANY thanks!!!
Thank you so much for this video. Gave me the courage to do this procedure on my '01 and the determination to do it right, not splice the pipes. Saved me $1,500. Thank you thank you!
Your welcome i hope you hit that like button it really helps this video get out there to help more ppl also if you enjoy classic cars try checking out my other content
7:33 saved me so much time and effort. I was so puzzled how I was going to get this new core in. Thank you for sharing this and helping us guys keep our old trucks running. Your efforts are appreciated.
George Finch glad it helped if there is anything else you need let me know
You pretty much saved my life on this one. Did it by myself with a smashed up dash. Those guys that cut their pipes need to remove their videos! Thanks a lot
Dude, your video makes it look so easy that I'm going to surprise my husband by fixing his truck. It's been around 8 years since he's had heat. Your slogan should be "So easy, a woman can do it!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol the hardest part is getting the dash out of the way n being a modular part its just some bolts n plugs just dont forget the gear indicator wire if you have an automatic
Best video I have seen for dodge heater core replacement.
+Dwight Briley thank you please be sure to sub to the channel and hit that like button help my channel out because with RUclips's new rules I'm going to end up losing my monetization that I've had for over 5 years
Bro you are a badass right now. I'm glad you showed the correct way to do it without cutting the new heater core. This is how I'm gonna do my cores from now on.
Glad i could help hopefully you hit the like button n feel free to join us for a casual live chat every Sunday at 9pm est
That's a lot easier than most people say.
I've tried the liquid radiator/heater core leak fix stuff. That didn't work so this will be my next project.
Thanks for taking us along.
+Natee Pun yeah most of the time that stuff just ends up clogging up everything and you end up having to have other issues further down the road and it never even fix the original problem good luck with your truck
Just finished installing heater core on my 97 Ram 1500! Thank you for the video!!
Glad i could help
Update Friday Sept 11 ,
I tried to get my heater core in and watched your video a few times and it's in !! After working on the truck one day a week for a month. We got more done in one afternoon than we have in a month.
Thanks
Whoop whoop glad you got it done!!!!
Thanks to your video I was able to replace my heater core today and finally have heat again in my truck! Greatly appreciate your efforts for this video!
Thank you glad i could help
I've done a half dozen of these over the years and always pulled the heater box back to get the cores in.( yrs ago they didn't have the swivels) Going to replace my daughters this evening and sure hope it goes this smooth. Definitely don't want to pull the box if possible. Thanks for the video.
Glad i could help
I feel like I have to pay you for this but unfortunately I have no money that's why I'm doing it myself but I am super grateful this is the only video I found how to actually put it in without removing a shit ton of other things so once again thank you so much
Jedidiahdavid Schlidt you don't need to pay me but if you like the video why don't you click subscribe and check out some of my other videos
Every forum I read they tell you to half-ass it with the clamps. I got mine in just like you did. Line the tubes up with the holes in the firewall first and wiggle the core and it'll eventually drop in. My old one was an original brass core so I just used a sawzall and cut the tubes. Pulled the core straight up and pulled the tubes out through the firewall. Took 90 minutes start to finish. I've done three this way now. No need to fuck with the AC unless you have a leaking evaporator core.
Just replaced mine. Thanks for the tips! It went in like butter without cutting and splicing. Piece of cake
Glad i could help
This seems pretty easy. Thanks for the upload.
Worked perfectly for my 1998 5.9 Ram. If the tubes and the heater core are started simultaneous and together that's the key. I went ahead and peeled back the foam above to give it a little more clearance. I cut the pipes and then pulled the hoses out to where it was near and close to remove stuck heater hoses easily. 3 hours without rushing and $35 heater core eBay. Cha Ching thanks for the video brother.
Glad i could help if it would intrest you we have a live chat every sunday at 9pm est and plenty more truck content so feel free to subscribe n like the video :)
Great job! Good to see young lads turning wrenches
I really like what you did with the strap
You made the job look easy thanks for the video.
+Carlos Esparza thank you n honestly if you take your time it really isnt as hard as ppl make it out to be
I just did my heater core as well and your video is the absolute best by far! it went in relatively easy and thank you for your help NOVAtazz. I have a Fbody camaro as well.
Well thank you for watching and im glad i could help. i also encourage you to sub and hit the like button if you enjoy classic cars as i hope to grow n bring better content as money allows
Thank you for your great advice and time showing the great job you did.
james enlow your welcome if u have any questions feel free to ask n thanks for the kind words
Best install video. I even added peel and stick weather striping to the sides of the heatexchanger for a tighter fit inside the housing so the fan air will not just try to go around the heat exchanger. Don't forget to wipe out all the leaked antifreeze that is in the bottom of the heat exchanger box before installing the new heat exchanger.
Thank you n love the weather strip idea and the coolant clean up I thought was common sence so didnt include it
I only added to clean out the leaked coolant in the housing because it is hard to see. I seen the puddle of coolant by just catching a glimpse of it the second time I installed the heat exchanger.
Still a good tip
Awesome video dude. I had mine out and in complete and done in 4 hrs. Thank you for your help.
Glad it was a help !!
Probably the best video showing the right way to do this. This is my project for today and I feel pretty confident after watching your video
Glad to hear this hopefully you hit the like button it really helps get this video to other ppl
@@NOVAtazz new heater core is in. No need to splice the old lines. Definitely easier your way. Thanks so much
Your welcome this is exactly why i made the video because i couldn't find one showing the right way to do im glad this helped be sure you check out my othe videos im in the middle of two classic car builds you might enjoy those along with there will be more ram content in the near future
Well done. Thank you for doing this video.
Liked and subscribed! Great video, great job. Much easier than any BMW. Gonna have to do this to my truck soon.
Thanks for the fix!
Great quality video. Very helpful
Glad i could help thanks for watching n if you havent please hit the like or dislike button
Watched your video about 4 times, the part in installing the new heater core, and mine went in in less than 5 minutes. Was ready to cut the inlet/outlet and use hose, glad I didn't. Easy....thanks for the video~! My vehicle was a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4.
Super glad this video helped if you love dodge trucks hope you check out some of my other videos n maybe give me a follow thanks for stopping by
Just did my heater core successful, I am in Alaska it's getting colder , thanks for the help.
Glad i could help always nice to have heat lol any i hope you hit the like button n maybe the subscription button
Thank you for making this video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for this! I watched it before attempting the install in my '01. Unfortunately mine just wouldn't go so I had to make the cuts and use heater hose and clamps. When I did drop in the core and put the lines through the firewall, the cuts didn't line up well so I think the tubing bends/lengths were a bit off but at least the hose took up the gaps. My Dorito dash looks a bit worse now but glad I'm gonna have heat again and no more fogged windshield. Will know in the morning if all is good...
Thanks for your video because my attempt to get the new core in worked just like you said (except that I couldn't sit in there, haha)! No cutting or loosening of the plastics needed, just like you said! Best video for this job and vehicle model that I know of!
Glad i could help. Stay warm this winter
@@NOVAtazz: Thanks! Yep, we have a good 2 months left before winter gets here, thank goodness (although it does get fairly cold before that, so this is ready for that now too).
Thanks for the help with this video it helped me really good to get my heater core back in my 2001 dodge ram 1500 v8 magnum
Glad it helped thanks for watching
NOVAtazz no thank you for posting the way you did your video was very very helpful and I learned from it. Many thanks from a hillbilly to a hillbilly
You guys are awesome. I agree ya don't want to cut / modify any part of a new part..to install.
I painted my 2013 4.7 L SLT, Hemi orange pearl. Looks pretty cool with gloss black factory rims, and black step rails. left the paint Matte. this color really comes out in the sun. Paint code is PLC. Removed the CAT. converters. installed a Series 40 Flow Master. The truck came
with a Posi rear end from the factory. Sounds like a Nascar truck.
Yea this truck is stock except tires n cat back atm
I was wondering why everyone was cutting up new cores!? Great job man
Ty sir
Man that was bad ass .. thank you .. I’ll be watching for your videos..
Thank you sir
Excellent video. Just changed mine out without cutting new one and attaching hoses on to them like other videos show. Thanks
Glad i could help
Thank you so much for this man. My dad and I have been struggling on this fixing project for a while now and have been looking to videos for help. Everyone wasn't much help due to their tactic of cutting the hoses, so having your video show how to get it in easy with no cutting definetly made my dad very happy. He had wanted me to write you a nice note and thank you because of your much needed help. Thanks man!
AJKay2047 no thank you for watching im not a fan of hacking where its not needed i did show both ways n i understand with the fixed pipes it is necessary to cut them but with the swivel pipes there is no reason too
+AJKay2047 also if you haven't yet please hit that like button it really helps n feel free to subscribe i have a lot of cool projects coming up
Best vid, couldnt figure it out till i watched this.
Glad it helps if you could take the time to like the video if you havent and share it with other ppl you think it could help that would be a great help to me
I will do myself. Thanks alot the clear pictures very helpful.
How did you make out???
This is a great video.
I'm gonna try this technique tomorrow. I've already did what someone recommend in another video by removing the bolts from the heater box .
Wish me luck.
attaboy, best video on heater core replacement!!
Thank you !!! Hope you hit the like button for me
Awesome video very cool thanks 🛠️🇨🇦🛠️🇨🇦
Ty n hope it helps
Dude thanks for the video, I have to replace the heater core in my 99 ram you made it seem so easy....called a mechanic for a quote, $500 just for labor
Let me know how you fair
Nicely done!
Ty i just had to do this again took me 1 hour from start to filling with coolent
Thank you for making this understandable.
Yw thank you for watching
Finally, someone doing this right.
I was convinced that this couldn't be done without half-assing it with hoses and clamps. Cheers to you for taking the time to make and post a proper tutorial.
Ty I believe in doing things quick n right
This video is great!

Merry Christmas! Bought a 98 about 6 weeks ago. It had minimal heat. Tried flushing/reverse, system cleaner neither worked. I'm far from mechanically inclined, though working in the auto glass biz for 6 years helped me be a little more adventurous. Plus the tech at our fingertips really helps. Anyway, I replaced the thermostat xmas eve, that didn't help with the heat, gasket was shot causing seeping. Ordered the same Spectra core. Your video helped quite a lot. I will say it seemed you had your dash out further than I could get mine. Plus it probably helps if you're small framed and not 280 lbs. Anyway, it was a struggle, and it took several attempts at getting the pipes and body lined up with the box just right. Probably took about 4-6 hours. Well worth the DYI, rather than the labor at a shop. I have heat now. Probably should have done the evap and the brittle vacuum lines, but it was getting dark. Managed to do a temp patch of vacuum lines using rubber fuel hose, so hopefully the "wild vents" are now controlled. The only thing I can add was a discovery after the job was done; it pertains to where the core pipes go through the firewall. It seems that the area is a single slot, rather than 2 separate holes for each pipe, thus meaning it shouldn't matter having to line the pipes up with firewall holes. Mine seems like there's just a foam insert that the pipes go through. Anyway, I got long winded here. As long as you have the tools noted, patience and time,it can be done. Oh, the core I replaced seemed to be the original from 21+ years/195k miles ago. Wasn't much corrosion, one small spot and the fins were rust colored though. Thanks Novatazz!

very good thanks for making that video!!
Kim Schwindt your very welcome im glad you liked it (hope you hit the like button) any questions just ask and if u like trucks n classic cars please subscribe hope you have a great new year
Adding - also to remove and replace that hard to reach single screw holding down the second tube clamp closest to the firewall. Just pull back enough of the foam insulation at above the screw from the firewall near the screw to expose the spotweled seam that is in the way of loosening the screw. Then take a LONG shaft Philips screwdriver and shove it through the foam just above the screw that needs to be removed. So easy then just do in reverse to reinstall. No need to remove all the foam when just making a hole in the foam with the screwdriver above the hard to reach tube screw.
Not sure I had that issue I'll have to go check
I did some head-scratching when it came to that screw. My solution... Phillips head bit from a multi bit screw driver taped into a ratcheting wrench. Never thought to just punch through the foam.
Yeehaw! Cheers for this 🍻
Great video
Thank you glad ppl still find it helpfull
Nice video thx
I got the exact same truck..I've watched countless videos of ppl cutting the foam and takin the lower box loose..i decided to stop when i got to the box and check out more videos...and whallaaa...now ima try wedging it in like you did ..i bet i can do it too
Longvas its the swivel style heater core you should be fine
It was and i did it...thx for the video
Sweet glad it helpped
P.S. I have a 1997 Ram 1500 Laramie SLT and have the same problem. I am going to fix it this week. thanks.
It wasnt too bad honestly took me less that 3 hours
Thx great vid
John Doe no, thank you for watching
I would i had the same issue i replaced a leaking radiator and still had low heat and smelled fluid i replace the core now have great heat and no more fluid smell took all day to acomplsh but glad its done
Thad Moose I'm glad that this video to help you out that's what it was for now you don't have to freeze during the winter
Worked out good although i had to manipulate the shit out of the core pretty good i was praying it wasnt gonna leak, but no problems👍🏻 thx
Glad i could help if you like ram try checking out some of my other videos working on one right now ;)
Nice job
Thank you Hopefully this video helpped you in some way
Thanx a million, good pictures and explanations. I'm smelling coolant in the cab of my 2001 Ram so I think I'm going to be doing this soon. If I could say, maybe you should keep more antifreeze in your coolant to stop that corrosion...?
PS: Great idea to use the ratchet strap to hold the dash back!
That corrosion was from before i bought the truck
Yeah, too many folks just don't realize that keeping at least 50-50 antifreeze solves those crud issues and keeps the car from freezing and even some reduction in overheating. I get onto new projects that look like that with the cheap backflush kits from Walmart, they work well. That crud may be why you needed to get after the thermostat. But again, thanks for a great video on the heater core replacement, the last one I did was in a 50's era car---much easier. @@NOVAtazz
@@elhuapo2524 yea i went to school for engine building
It shows in your mechanical ability, like in the video. I saw a couple others which were a bit less inspiring. I learned my way up around cars via watching others and making many, many mistakes. I really love the internet and RUclips and how folks like you can broadcast information. I could have used it 50 years ago, heh. Thanks, hp@@NOVAtazz
@@elhuapo2524 hey same here im not perfect either i make mistakes lol this rams transmission issues is proof of that feel free to subscribe n enjoy the content we have a live hangout chat every Sunday 9pm eastern time
Thank you so much for the very detailed video. It made the change out on my truck so very easy. I was able to get mine in without cutting the new one. Though I must say that I am jealous of the condition of your dash. Mine is decentigrated. Thank goodness for dash covers right?
Glad the video helped though I do believe that my dash isnt original
Good job guys 👍
Thank you for watching
NOVAtazz thank you for making! 👍✌️
good video THANKS
Your welcome and thank you for watching
Your method worked great! Maybe took an hour!
Glad i could help!
I have a 96 Ram and am curious. Ive already replaced the upper part of my dash due to cracking and I can clearly see my heater core so would I be able to do this without removing the entire dash? Mine isn't leaking yet just curious for the future.
Great video! Awesome editing!
Thank you hope it helped you
@@NOVAtazz I haven't replaced mine yet but I will be before the cold hits here in iowa. Looks pretty simple to do.
Well good luck n stay warm
@@NOVAtazzI replaced the heater core but now the hvac cold/hot control wont go all the way cold or hot. Is it because the rod that connects to the blend door from the hvac controller came out of alignment?
It could be binding up yes I'd check it out
Simple green will help clean out the entire cooling system
Thanks for the tip
I didn't notice the ribbon ground attached to the heater core. If the last person who replaced it didn't put it back on that is why it fail so soon. Electrolysis between the aluminum and cast iron thru the coolant slowly pulls aluminum the walls of the core until so thin it leaks. Hope you saw that and put it back into place.
Thanks man .
+greg bakley welcome be sure to check out the rest of my channel
Thanks dude.
+A FishyFella no thank you for watching if you wanna thank me please hit the like button n share my channel with your friends
thanks body... my job is done today..thanks you
Glad my video can help be sure to share it with others and feel free to watch my other videos
yess
People complain because people are impatient, overwhelmed and trick them selves that it's more complicated than it really is. When you do that you are manifesting it to be more complicated than it really is and end up ripping, breaking, or busting things apart instead of finding all the screws bolts and hooks ultimately giving you more work to do things to replace and making the job harder than it actually is. Just breathe 😂
Thank you for this video. Just wondering if my heat core is going out too. I have very low heat levels in cab and I continue to smell radiator fluid even after a new radiator was installed. Do you think I should replace the heater core too?
wood brass and glass first off thank you for watching n happy holidays. And i can guarantee if u smell coolant when the heat is on ur heater core is shot. So yes replace it
Will do:) my truck is an 2004. If I make a video I will credit you for your instant help and your video which made it really clear as to what to do. Merry Christmas:)
+wood brass and glass not sure if the 2004 is different as it is a 3rd gen n not a 2nd as in the video but the same concept applies
I did mine today and did not cut any hoses. Got heater core from A1 auto.com. No swivel at all. Take all bolts off evac box and slide the a/c lines thru firewall. It will come out and new will go in. Pain in the butt, but done ..
Which part of the gear selector do you remove? The whole assembly or just unplug the connector?
just the little cord that controls the pin in the dash
This seems like the best Vid for replacing this part..UGHHHH I hate pulling dash boards..I'll let you know how it turns out,...Thanks For the Heads Up.
I love my Ram P/U but its got some design flaws & crappy engineering...Its got 140k miles, appears to have had the core replaced, but its leaking .....crappy overhead interior lights,...rusty lower door lock catches...awesome running boards that appear to mate to fender flares, but only goes along the cab. so I may have to fabricate an extension....just cant find the brand name...Yet....
uski59 almost any car anymore you have to pull the dash to get to the heater core but at least in the Dodge is not too hard to do
uski59 PS please be sure to like the video and subscribe for more truck content
Thanks for response......yep..It looks easier than most Ive done...&..Ive pulled several,....just dont look forward to it....Let ya know when I get r done.
Ughhh....just checked codes....455 evap leak,...that dont look too bad....
& 307...cyc7 misfire,...hmmmm could be involving......hopefull just a bad plug wire.....Dont know when this beast was serviced last,.......but it didnt skip a beat when I bought it.....so I'll give er a lil TLC.
Oop TY I've thumbed up & subed.
Did you put the front bracket back on that helps hold the hoses there close to the fire wall
+robert Dowell yes i did
While I agree that parts aren’t made the same anymore, anyone that runs a radiator coolant (or plain old rusty water in this case) can’t bitch about parts not lasting. Might want to get a Radiator on order soon. Kudos for not putting that crap through the new core though.
Well unfortunately I cannot control what was done to the truck before I acquired it the cooling system was flushed into a clear and new coolant was added before it was hooked up to the heater core system
Great video you guys!!!. Shop wants like 600$ for a 40$ part!!!
Like 800 to a grand up here
So you didn't have to remove or loosen the blower unit assembly from the firewall? You were able maneuver the pipe lines through? One of the better videos on the subject thanks!
+West Coast Roller no i didnt i left all that alone and yea i was frustrated with some of the videos i saw too thanks for the comment let me know how you made out
Thanks will do..... I'll probably make a video showing it. Cheers
Really like the beard in this one.
Will this fix the flooded passenger floor? I already tried everything on the evaporator
drain
depends why the floor flooded most have a drain from the heater to outside the firewall
Will this work for 2003 ram 1500 I seen them take off the steering wheel and the whole dash out
Idk im pretty sure thats the next gen and may be similar but im sure its not exactly the same
I have read a lot of reviews of this swivel heater core leaking with in a month to a couple of years has yours leaked or still good?
Mine is still good 👍
yea miss old cars go through glove box or go under.. new hose by the foot 30 min and done
Hello would this cause white light smoke from the ac vents ???!!! Help
Possibility from the coolent leaking into the hvac box but i couldnt say for certain thats your issue
