- In this video we show how we fixed the air flow problems with this 2015 Ram 3500 truck. The process should be similar to other ram trucks. YOU SHOULD NOT have to remove the dash if you do what we show in this video.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you. My truck had almost no airflow and now it blows my beautiful mullet hair back.
😭🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao 😆😆😆 I got a mental image of the flowing mullet
Reuben, you are brilliant! I’ve been watching videos and reading forums for weeks trying to figure out why my fan motor isn’t blowing hard enough in my 2015 Dodge Ram. No one except you (that I could find) realized the coil was acting as a filter. Then you’re solution to the problem that didn’t involve tearing the whole dash out is brilliant. I did exactly what you showed on the video and now my fan blows strong. I live in Texas so the AC needs to blow very strong. I am 51 years old and am a mechanic by trade. I am so grateful that I can learn from you young guys too :)
Thank you for your video. It helped me clean the evaporator coil of my 2015 Doge Ram 3500. I didn't use any water or sprays. Removed resistor, and pushed in 4" diameter dryer vent brush and pushed it all around. It dislodged all the caked on dirt, and I vacuumed the dirt out using wet and dry vacuum with a 1/2" tube squeezed into small slot vacuum attachment. The airflow increase was amazing, and feels like original. Selfie on cell phone takes decent photos of dirt on coil when pointed up resistor opening.
Thanks for sharing that tip. I was wondering if you could see the rest of the evaporator by dropping the resistor. I’ll try that on mine since I just had this issue this weekend. I was able to get some airflow back by turning off the recirculate function.
This is the only view I've seen that shows how to open the space for a filter. Also the only one I've seen that shows a way to clean core inside. Thanks so very much.
My neck hurts just watching this. Good job getting the video of the whole process with the funky hole and the coil. I think that was either pollen or mold blocking it up. That coil cleaner product worked well.
I've watched at least a dozen videos for this process and this is by far the best. I was also thinking of using foam and blowing from the oposite side of the evap but I wasnt sure if it was visible. You can confirmed the backside of the evap is easily accessed, thank you!!!
I just wanted to let you know this video right here save me so much time and money. I really appreciate it. God bless on another note. I think it’s really stupid how the Dodge ram does not come with a Van blower motor filter my truck didn’t have one either and I had to do the same thing you did in this video to make my AC start blowing harder. God bless and thank you again very much.
I didn’t even think to go in from the left side between the heater and evap. Great video you’re saving my ass! I’ve been cleaning it from the right side for two years with minimal result
Can I just say you guys are pineapple lifesavers, they are the best ones! Thank you so much for saving me hundreds at a mechanic
Nice fix a gem of a video. Surprising how so much you have to filter to get to the answer you need. Nice job guys
I have a spray nozzle for the garden hose I got from Home Depot. It’s got a valve with a 3 foot piece of tubing with a nozzle on the end. Almost for watering trees. I take out the resistor and blower. I put a rubber Mat on the passenger floor board. And I blast the coil with water until the drain clears. Then I’ll use the coil cleaner and soap it maybe 3 or 4 times . Wait each time about 5 min . And power wash it off with the nozzle . Put your resistor and motor back in . No holes to fix . Don’t take the glove box out or even down .
You can use the water hose in there, just make sure you keep the drain plug clear .
Great video , you can tape the outside air inlet shut and ut will help keep your coils cleaner.
Was thinking of doing the same thing this weekend on my 09 dodge ram, glad to come
Across your video
have this probablemente with my 2004 lincoln aviator, dosent come with a cabin air filter and i’ve been looking countless forums to no avail, until i saw this, thank you so much brotha 👍🏽
Ty for the video, 2011 ram same problem, couldn't figure it out until I seen the video. I did what you did except cutting the square and hole, but fixed the problem now I can feel cold air and good flow. Ty again really helped
Were you getting cool air before? And now it's cold air?
That's awesome and people wonder why their air conditioning fails slowly over time despite the fact there is nothing mechanically wrong
You should consider getting small sheet of abs and some foam strips to make a door to cover those holes so you can access them again later
Wow great job brother and it is incredible they don't put a filter there it does make me mad but you know we should check when we getting the truck , next time but thank you
Gentlemen great detective work and explanation of repair...nice job, thanks for sharing
My 2013 ram 2500 tradesman didn’t come with one either. Adding the cabin air filter kit was the First thing I did when I bought it.
Good job. I have to cut a hole in my Silverado to get better access to the evaporator. Do not I repeat do not use any kind of WIRE brush. You will close off the evaporator fins!
I will be doing this to my 2007 dodge ram 1500. I already have it torn apart to add sound sound and heat barrier. Also dying all the interior so this is just a add bonus while its torn apart anyway. Thanks
Those are prob one of the easiest dashes to pull ever, did my heater core start to finish in 2 hrs removing the dash and pulling the hvac box, I feel like this took way longer and made waaaay more of a mess
Bullshit
Okay my one and only question, are you in Houston, I need to learn how to do everything in my AC I got robbed by a so-called professional, now that I'm broke I need to learn how to do AC work on my car, and you sound like a fantastic teacher
Not in Houston. Actually up in Minnesota. However, I will try to keep the AC videos coming to assist you in your endeavors.
Great camera work, thanks so much. Found a mouse nest in mine today and got all that out of there, and cleaned it with a wal mart baby bottle brush and some coil cleaner. Nasty!
Dude that was helpful. Thank you man 👍
My 2010 ram has had weak airflow since I got it 6 months ago but recently airflow has stopped and then sometimes it flows again could this be why?
You rock, this was my exact issue as well!
Thank you for sharing this video. Very informative
I was thinking of this solution but I didn't want plastic weld the flap back in, I wanted to leave the hole for later cleanings but I was debating on how to make a piece to cover the hole. I was thinking I could hot glue some cardboard on the inside and then spray some expanding foam all around the hole but I am not sure how long that foam will last.
The whole process also makes you wonder why the manufacturer just didn't make a cleaning port, it seems almost malicious that they didn't do the obvious necessity here.
Awesome Job! Gonna have to try that.
Can you provide some details for the plastic weld stapler and other plastic welding tools you used? Great video, looking forward to better air flow!
ruclips.net/video/wU27Bd3Z7IE/видео.htmlsi=Fwr-Vct3oXmSUlwn
We made a little test video of the plastic welder, not super professional but you can get an idea of how it works and what we got.
There is a link to one similar in the description of the video.
Wow this person must drive through the desert
Mine is leaking water from that box that you cut a hole into. Backed up drain im guessing. Will investigate as time allows.
Nice! Very helpful!
I like to say That You young Guys just opened My Mind Up to Fix My 99 Dodge Ram AC unit someday. And where U2 opened the wall up & clean out the problem and then patch the holes up that was amazing that part blow my mind. Thank u so much for the info💯💓
Awesome work guys
Great video! I did this as you did and air started blowing out as it should. 2 days later now and air is back to bearly blowing out again. Any ideas??? Compressor is brand new and fan motor works correctly.
Was it pretty plugged up when you cleaned it out? Could possibly be the fan speed controller or "resistor" as I think they call it.
What filter? Great video!
Why would Dodge not put a cabin air filter in these trucks. Im about to do the same process for the same reason. Thank you for the video
No clue my 1500 from 14' didn't either dumbest sh1t ever
Great information I wish Brunswick Automarts Service Department had. My truck has no air flow intermittently though. This does not seem to be my fix. Any ideas?
@@NEOHIOFlagChair is it only when your air conditioner has been running for a while? Could be partially blocked and freezing up as a consequence.
Good on you guys but I'd rather spend a few hours pulling the dash, rather than chop my truck up.
A few hours? Not on these trucks. And to fully remove it you have to open the AC system. If you do not have the ability to evac and recharge then what?
I am hoping my Dakota has this set up. The resistor keeps dying but there is no filter to swap
Great job guys
Absolutely brilliant,,I'm gonna do the same
I got good air flow, but my ac doesn't blow cold during summer. The system will blow cold if is cold out. Heater works just fine, i already cleaned out my evaporator. Still didnt work, any other ideas?
Sounds like you have an issue with the actual refrigeration part, so charge, compressor or pressure switch.
Fantastic video! Thank you!
Ilike the access hole idea! How much spare room did you have around your cut? I'm wondering if I can make a bigger hole than you did or if there is something in there i would absolutely grenade if i didn't stay in that rectangle area where the sticker is located. Thanks!
Yeah we didn't want to "grenade" anything either! 😂
You could possibly make it bigger, but there seemed to be some support ribs that could make cutting more differicult. We were just being cautious, and it ended up being enough access, although more would perhaps be better. You'll just have to make that call on your own, hope this helps!
Sounds good! I'm going to add the cabin air filter and try it your way. $1200+ to do it otherwise and truck has 189000 miles. Thanks for answering so quick!
Great information thanks very much.
Great video!!
What a mess could I get the part # for the filter? don't really want to cut it all up but?? Really don't want all that problems! dont know if you still read these posts but I'm trying.
Thanks Dutch.
I need to do this but not cut hole. Undo clips. Will be more time consuming though.
There's a good series on doing it the 'right' way here: ruclips.net/video/dWCjuXxBhlY/видео.html&ab_channel=MotorCityMechanic but I'm going to try this approach first. Don't wanna tear apart my whole dash just to clean this thing.
Curious why not make both holes bigger? Do you think that would have made it easier?
Yeah you probably could make them bigger, and it would have made it easier. We just didn't know what was behind there, so we were more cautious.
@@ReubenSahlstrom thanks
you might have had the same success by simply shooting the entire can of evap cleaner up the drain hose, clamping end of drain hose for 10-15 minutes so cleaner can dissolve evap filth, then unclamp drain hose so it can all drain out. repeat until comes out clean. same result much less work
You might have to try that out, and see how it works. 😂
@@ReubenSahlstrom I did, it works great. There's several yt instructional vids of it. Best
Awesome, thank you
Thabk you Ruben!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Great Idea!!
Do you have a part number for the air filter?
Yep! I put links in the description.
Very helpful!
Does the filter cutout need to be closed again?
Not as long as there is a filter in it.
They sell a cabin air filter access door that pops right in place. Amazon has it. Im fixing to do this to mine right now.
What's the reason for making holes and not just spraying it through the blower area?
Better access to the heater core.
I dont understand how these didn't come with a factory cabin filter
Be much easier just to pull it all out and clean it entirely
Did you have air movement thru defrost and floor ??
We had no airflow through all the vents.
My evaporator core is bad. I wonder if I can use this approach to replace it without taking the whole dash apart?
Same here!
Thanks.
What I just looked at hurt my eyes 🤕 In Russia, we just remove the top panel completely and clean the evaporator😂
We do in America as well. This is the lazy or unqualified method.
Maybe "short cut" would be a better term? Lazy is on welfare watching RUclips, not posting it. Also, why not call out ram for not putting air filters in? Now that seems retarded if you ask me.
@@ReubenSahlstrom lazy as in they are too lazy to remove the dash so they cut a hole in the air box which looks like crap and will more than likely leak off air pressure or fall off in he future. I’ve seen it happen by other unqualified mechanics hack jobs in my shop.
We did this for our own vehicle. If you're running an actual mechanics shop, don't be watching RUclips to learn how to clean an evaporator this way. I am sure pulling the dash is much easier for some more experienced guys like yourself. This is just an alternate way that worked great for us, and is (I would assume) interesting to others like yourself since clearly you have no intention of doing this.
@@ReubenSahlstrom well I’m glad it worked out for you.
They didn’t have air filters for a century without problems
How do you do this without cutting parts of the truck
You have to take apart the entire dash.
Grrrrreat vid
Shop vac wouldn't work?
It didn't work for us. It was really caked on.
I accidentaly cut right next to it and pooped something , what did i pop ? It was soemthing green lol
Prob oil from your ac system, all that has refrigerant and oil running through it.
Lot's of pet hair too, good job.
“lots”
That stuff is a acid! And made for Residential and commercial AC , automotive ACs have different parts that it might eat away at even if you rinse it off with Water, another issue a Vehicle is a confined space your going to be breathing that chemical 😮 it doesn't have long ducts to travel through like a home central AC. I would never do this to my RAM . Shortcuts are never cheaper in the end.
I can understand your concerns. The cleaner we used is aluminum safe, and and rinsing does remove it. Also not sure why having longer ducts would change what's in the air that's blowing through them? In any case, glad you are convinced pulling the dash is a better solution, you have fun with that. 😉
There was screws on the thing you cut a whole it’s able to be removed 😂 no need for violence
Yes, it can be taken apart if the dash is removed, but not the way we did it. This way saved us a lot of time.
There is a much easier way without cutting up ur box
Poor engineering on Dodge Ram's part
Yal farm boys catch hell
What a dirty truck.
Hack job.
😂
@@ReubenSahlstrom Bro, you could have just run a tube through the evaporators drain and cleaned it better instead of chopping holes. Just sayin. May try in the future.
@@ReubenSahlstrom With evaporator cleaner.
@@maxpain7197 honestly that could probably work too. Pretty helpful to watch this video and understand where the coil is, and where to spray the cleaner. You should try it on your truck and see how it works. Maybe make a video about it? Although there were perhaps lazier ways to do it, this was definitely the best way from us to really see if the debris was being removed properly without pulling the dash.
@ReubenSahlstrom the drain goes straight into the drain tube it's like an artery to the evaporater. Cleans it from the inside out.
