    Imagine the following scenario: you, the player, are tasked with stealing top-secret documents from a former research institute-turned-military complex swarming with enemies. You manage to slip into the main building undetected, narrowly avoiding the eyesight of your adversaries - but just as you reach the target, you are spotted, and the alarm goes off. Undeterred, you reload your previous save with the intention of making the alert go away - only to be confronted with the same relentless wailing. You load the next save in your list - and once again, the haunting sound is still there. It’s as if the ghost of your previous, inept incarnation has polluted your world with its spectral presence - and there’s nothing you can do about it.
    This scene epitomizes the often baffling, yet thoroughly fascinating series of first person shooter survival horror games developed by GSC Game World, Stalker. Stalker is not a series of finished products, but rather, a work-in-progress, a palimpsest whose texture inscribes the history of its troubled development. All the hardships, discarded ideas, and unrealistic ambitions that dogged the games’ development haunt them in the form of innumerable bugs and frustrating design flaws. And yet, despite - or perhaps even because of these faults, the series managed to attract a sizeable cult following, spawning an abundance of mods, fanfiction, novels, as well as films, and even inspire courageous fans to enact their fantasies in the game’s real life setting: the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The story of the Stalker series illustrates that sometimes, success is only possible if it straddles the border of disaster.

    The thing I appreciate most about this video is how it forgoes its very title in the conclusion: even though, in technicality, the franchise "fell" (GSC is a shell of its former self, cancelled sequel, no new game since '09, the license is in limbo etc.), it is still very much alive through sheer fan appreciation. Mods, books, fan-made movies... Hell, even entirely new games are born out of the phenomenon that is STALKER. It really goes to show that, no matter how imperfect the games may be, fans will never stop loving them. You did a very good job of emphasizing that, GVMERS, and for that you have my gratitude.

      @ Alessia I remember Fallout New Vegas was so buggy at launch it would crash every hour 1 or 2 times. Ijust saved alot and kept playing. Your comment made me think about those good times. Ialso think we will get another Stalker or a spiritual successor. Maybe someone with vision will buy the franchise.

      You start running towards the music almost ready to burst in tiers, when you finally make it they're all dead. You fall down on your knees, bite your teeth together with eyes full of anger. You see the bottle of vodka now on the ground pouring itself out, "This is for you comrades" as you take sip of it and violently throw that shit on the campfire. The hatred in your heart is so pure and true that the flames in your eyes forms the word of revenge.
      You squeeze your palm into a fist and spit on the ground, "your death was not in vein brothers." Quickly you grab the AK and pull from the charging handle. You throw away your cigarette and say this one out loud, "well... It looks like I'm off to hunt myself another Bloodsucker."
      But you know, the Bloodsucker ends up ambushing you and you will join your friends because such is the life in the zone, so back to the loading screen with you.

    “Success is only possible if it straddles the border of disaster”
    This is a brilliant and very astute statement, and there’s been more than a few examples of this: Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, and STALKER among others. For some odd reason, when something seems to teeter on the edge of chaos, brilliance oftentimes ensues. When everything is controlled, the results are much less.

    The ending of this video says everything. STALKER is like The Zone, it atracts people, somehow it does. And something in it, maybe the promisse of the AI, maybe the atmosphere, maybe the plot, who knows it atracts people. Cause, like The Zone, STALKER is pure. It's pure pontential of what a game can be.

      These games were a labor of love for sure. I still have not yet played a more immersive FPS. Sure they can change the cities up for new Fallouts and add in a voiced MC with a linear story arch that feels like treading water the entire time but they're never going to beat the full immersion you get from STALKER's simple yet depth filled world.

    • @hellcatdave1
      @hellcatdave1 6 лет назад +41

      To be honest the games weren't even that buggy. No buggier than Fallout 3 and New Vegas, or any other open world game. It's really stupid that people constantly point that out about this game.

    • @alexubel
      @alexubel 6 лет назад +3

      @DavidMN No it isn't. Fallout 3 may have been buggy for you, but I played through the entire game without incident...New Vegas as well. Also, when did we become so apathetic that we even accept this as the norm for any game, when in the past, it wasn't. In fact just a decade ago (yes 10 years is a while) we got fully realized/complete games. Polished, and released with as few bugs as possible. Now they release buggy/broken games regularly, and they are still given a free pass, by those same apathetic/complacent people.
      These games were buggy as fuck, and the devs even admit that fact.

    • @hellcatdave1
      @hellcatdave1 6 лет назад +13

      No one should accept that a game is buggy, but we should acknowledge that more than one game is buggy. Anyone who 100% completed Fallout 3 or NV experienced bugs.

    • @ootdega
      @ootdega 6 лет назад +9

      You might have been fine, but I encountered several game-breaking bugs in Fallout 3 (one of which required starting a new game), and New Vegas crashed at least three times every time I played it. One of the patches actually broke all of my saves for several months. Both of these were on Xbox 360. New Vegas was the buggiest train wreck I've ever played, closely followed by Skyrim. _To this day_ there are unfixed bugs in New Vegas. _Bad_ ones. I added two of them to the wiki myself. The wiki where *half of the pages on it* have a "Bugs" section.
      The only times I remember the STALKER games crashing on me were when I tried eating food from a corpse's inventory in Shadow of Chernobyl with the Super Mod Pack, and an infamous bug in the MISERY mod for Call of Pripyat that happens when the game tries to spawn an enemy with a very specific weapon that doesn't exist in the game's code. Notice both of those are modded. Granted, those are just what I remember, but consider the fact that I played the Bethesda games _years_ before I played the STALKER series.

      @Naufal Hafizh They are very different games. Metro is a linear (except Exodus) shooter filled with scripted sequences. STALKER is a very unique game that i can't really compare anything to. It's somewhat like Fallout New Vegas' hardcore mode but it's primarily a shooter, not an RPG. And it's a lot more complex than Metro with leaning, different crouch heights; bleeding, hunger, psy and radiation meters you need to watch out for and an inventory system with a limited amount of weight.

    One of the things I love about Stalker, which is a minor thing really, is the ammunition system. I haven't found another game that does this.
    The game remembers the order in which you load shotgun shells, so you can load buck, slug, buck, slug, slug, slug and it will recall that order, and the correct ammunition will fire when you pull the trigger, thus making shotguns much more versatile.
    I would regularly Stalk along with my pump 12 gauge, the first two shells buckshot and the rest slug just so if I got jumped by a critter a couple of shots of buck would sort it out. Alternatively, if I came under fire from a distance, after the first two shots the magazine would then be firing slugs that were more accurate at range and had a better chance of penetrating body armour.
    Loved that feature, and I just don't see that anywhere else.

    the weight system is very important and only a gamebreaker for people that never experienced running with a heavy 30kg + rucksack.
    for me its a deal breaker when you can carry 250kg like in many adventure games, the weapon damage as well by the way, you have to keep in mind that most weapons in the zone are blackmarket used weapons and bad mantined i love dealing with those issues its very imersive when you have to keep your gear in shape.

    • @krashd
      @krashd 5 лет назад +18

      I used to hate games with a weight-limit but now I adore them because you develop a survivor mindset, or at least you force yourself to develop one, where you prioritise a primary weapon and a handgun, decide on a set amount of supplies to carry (2 of any light things like drugs, 1 or 2 medium things, and nothing heavy unless the benefits outweigh the extra weight by a huge margin) and you stick to it.
      When you first start to do this there are a lot of "Nnnnnng, I might need that!!" moments that detract from the gameplay but those are a lot less distracting than micro-managing your inventory every time you find a corpse or a stash to the point that you are paying more attention to your inventory than you are to the game. I used to never finish games, I would lose interest after a while and never knew why until I realised it was because I wasn't playing the game as it was intended and was just trying to find and do everything in the first play through...

    • @TheCrypto34
      @TheCrypto34 4 года назад

      Late to the reply but I'm kind of in the middle of those two sides, i like the weight mechanics sometimes but i also like having ways around them. In Stalker i just tweaked the config files and bumped the weight up to around 200kg (ik its a ridiculous amount) so i can carry more but i often sell off what i find to passing stalkers or lug it back to a base to sell to a trader for cash to upgrade my good gear. In games like Fallout 4 there's a campsite mod that gives you a pack you can place down as the "work bench" for the camp system, but it also functions as storage so id dump all my uneeded gear and crap in that and only carry the basics i needed then unload the pack once back at a settlement via cheesing the settlement system a bit.
      Kind of defeats the purpose of weight mechanics to have an infinite weight storage bag floating around ik but i find my myself personally its a good balance. I have to decide whats worth immediately accessing ala my inventory and what can wait a couple minutes to get to by setting up a quick campsite. At least for Fallout 4, in Stalker the config tweaks give me enough weight to loot all i want and manage to lug it to the nearest guy with money.

      The main drawback of the weight system is the thresholds of it, where at one point you can move then at another you suddenly cant. So the character is incentivized to try to find some abstract weight number that he wouldn't have access to in the real world1 , to avoid a encumbrance drawback that is abstracted into a gamey IF WEIGHT = X THEN MOVESPEED 0 system.
      So it tries to be realistic, but is just just streamlined into another "gamey" system that makes the game more tedious. Like how games want to emulate hunger to make the game more immersive, but then you end up min/maxing bar management, which is a net detractor for immersion.
      1:(you don't know off-hand what everything weighs or what you are carrying, you feel it)

    "Brutal" weight limit and equipement degradation make players VALUE their tools instead of hoarding legendaries like in many other games. Likewise Metro limits you to amount of slots or items. Exosuit and all unique guns are cool and all, but most people had finished their games in "self sustaining" equipement or haven't needed much more then their trusty double barrel at all. Or revolver if it's Metro.
    As for "hardcore survival horror" part, no of the fans call it that. You get used to difficulty in short order and just accept it as good FAIR FPS. It poisons the genre to you and leads to a lot of "casuals, casuals everywhere" whining, but... well, it's kind of true.
    Games like Stalker, Metro, M&B kind of replace the achievemnt plank of better loot or higher levels with forcing the player themselves to become better and maybe feeling a bit proud about that...
    /cough/ instead of taking biggest shield while avoiding fat roll and switching to easy mod immediatly. I guess I'm just tired of _"accidentaly"_ ending up with *the same* build all the time as if it was one of the only few viable and 99% of stats and equipement were just trash otherwise /cough/

      Right, but I think what the creators meant is that the weight limit could have been handled with more grace and realism. Instead of going from mobile to immobile as soon as the player is one digit over the weight limit, GSC could have implemented a system where basic mobility is significantly slowed down or sprint is disabled instead, as being completely unable to move is a bit preposterous. I really do have to agree that the inventory system is a good mechanic but in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. far from perfect.

      Your stamina starts to drop at increased rate once you hit the stated ''limit''. You can still hoard extra 10kg before your MC is immobilized. That's more than enough warning to the players to slow down the looting and stash shit up - thus potentially creating non-obligatory, self-imposed extra adventures to the area.
      All in all, if you got well over 30kg worth of gear in your pockets when taking off to new areas or missions, you're not Stalkin' correctly.

    If I could make a religion out of playing this game serie and all of its modded variations, I would.
    Back in the late 00's, I came across Clear sky in a 2 sided shelf in gamestop and bought it out of curiosity when I looked over the back of the case. I got it purely out of curiosity despite my dad saying he heard it was a buggy mess and I fell in love with it despite it being buggier than a dune buggy. Never before did a game grab ahold of me with immersion and that feeling only got stronger as I got the other 2 games and started replaying them again.
    I highly recommend new comers try it out so they can see what the fuss is about. One tip though: Play on the harder difficulties (maybe not the hardest but still) as difficulty effects both you and your enemy the same way.

Also if you pre-order and pay more it says right on the Stalker 2 website " Stalkers will play more songs on guitar and tell more campfire stories " but ONLY if you have the pre-order edition. I hope they stick to their word on allowing modifications, I wonder if they will stick by that if the mod conflicts directly with their microtransaction system for weapon and outfit skins.

      ThePuppyPrince it's more of an action rpg, but the true merit of stalker imo is that it's game world and atmosphere are unsurpassed and will probably stay unsurpassed, the world feels more alive than any other game I've played and probably will play because in a world of AAA copypastes and safe business micro transaction models of games no one innovates with their AI like gsc did with stalker and monolith with fear

    • @Shreds87
      @Shreds87 6 лет назад

      Well there's many types of fear and horror out there comrade. Holywood after the 80-s tries to convince you that the only two forms of horror that should exist are gore and jumpscares. But that's bullshit. There's horror in isolation, abandonment, the unknown. Stalker is excellent for creating you own horror. I completed Call of prypyat like 12 times but still i go out there from time to time scavanging with almost no resources (basic armor, basic rifle, very few ammunition, no meds, no heal kits, and a bottle of vodka) just to search for god :)

It sucks that the series is dead but one can hope that some developer will make a game that closely resembles STALKER.

    the sense of relief in this game when you find friendly NPCs after going through dark tunnels when you are travelling without anyone in this game even if you are not under a roof you will still not feel safe you'll always feel like a controller is going to attack even if you are in cordon lol when you find a base you just instantly feel safe and when you are in the dark tunnels beneath the zone it never feels safe even if you are playing in the day (i always play horror games in the day don't judge me) you still feel scared this is what you call a horror game. This is perfection.

    Guys, you have to play the mod *"Call of Chernobyl"* if you haven`t yet! It offers easily the best Stalker experience so far, especially when combined with other mods to make it more realistic, better looking or integrating a full faction war system. It brings together all "levels" of all three Stalker games, creating a huge world to explore. You also can start as a member of any faction you like and start in many different parts of the zone thus creating your own story. It is the closest to a real open world Stalker game you can get by now.

    Let's all be honest with this. None of us can see S.T.A.L.K.E.R. reaching such mainstream appeal. It wouldn't be the same series if it was eventually run into the ground like Silent Hill or carved out by some financial fiends ala Dead Space. It was the best ending it could have had, thrown between that line of life and death. It remains in an anomaly that will forever replicate and refine itself, like someone that is constantly evolving and changing. The cocoon may never break, and we may never see the supposed final stage, but we don't need to.

      Definitely this.. If anyone thinks a Stalker 2 game made in today's fucking corrupted world with no regards about compassion and creativity and believe it would be as pure and beautiful as the past ones, that person is simply delusional, or a youngster who don't know shit about 90's and early 00's quality.. the game would simply be just another linear garbage with moronic leveling and crafting systems and even maybe Quick Time Events.. not to mention half of the game being consisted of fucking cinematic cutscenes..
      It is a sad truth, but in today's world, I absolutely wouldn't want any continuation to any of the games (and movies also) that I love.. considering the stage we degenerate people devolved into...

    I had spent a number of months salivating over the impressive tech demo videos for the game, before I started hearing it labelled as "vaporware" and eventually I put the game out of my mind as it seemed it would never see the light of day. Then one day I received an email telling me my copy had shipped, completely unaware the game had even been completed. Damn happy it did, because to this day it is still one of my favourite games ever. Leaving the bunker and walking through the little village outside, I knew this game was something special. The atmosphere was unlike anything I had played before and it drew me in. Still pretty effective these days, despite its dated graphics. Also, carrying a sniper rifle with a few hundred bullets is something you don't get often in video games :D
    I can't imagine how much I would pay for a new P.C.-exclusive S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, provided it was done well and kept what made the original so great. (Needs to be P.C.-exclusive, because consoles tend to hold back shooters, e.g. decent inventory management.) Even an HD remake of the original would be nice, with perhaps some improvements to the story and spoken dialogue for all the text.

    I sank countless hours into all 3 titles with CoP being the most played for me. All 3 have their charm and I remember them fondly, thankfully the modding community have taken the reigns and made the most amazing content and for free. I started with Misery, which while fun and very challenging was plagued with performance issues due to the aged engine. Lost Alpha was next but didn't see much in the way of progress after being let loose. But now... for years Anomaly has been the pinnacle of all 3 games combined into 1 with metric tons of content, and for free! Can't recommend enough to anyone who watches this to try it out. Just started playing Gamma which is a further modded Anomaly and in my eyes, it's absolute perfection.

      Gotta disagree with you there. Crowdfunded games like Rimworld, Darkest Dungeon, and FTL have been fantastic. It's just a matter of choice and risk. With traditional game funding, you pretty much know you're gonna get it, but the executive suits and parent companies tend to peddle low-quality DLC and slap micro-transactions on everything, in order to churn out a profit. Whereas with crowdfunded games, it's a risk of the devs bailing out entirely, but often times it turns out well and without profit schemes.

I seen it at gamestop and it just looked so mysterious never heard of it before or anything, and all the guy said at the desk was, ''interesting choice, that ones been sitting here for a while'' me being a regular at the place (and 12yrs old at the time) I guess it was a lil weird. But its been a long time since ive gotten sucked into a game THAT hard, i mean i put more into that game then any game i got to date, Anyone remember Agroprom Underground or Lab X-16 or whatever the first lab was, Thats when i faced my fear of the monsters under my bed, I felt like a stone cold killer when i got out of those areas with rare artifacts and armor n shit, then when i finally made it through red forest to get to pripyat i felt so achieved, You cant get through red forest without that brain emmiter thing, so no brain emmiter no pripyat, you'd die from radiation if you tried running through it, trust me i tried 100 times, I can make a whole other story about call of pripyat, and clear sky sucked imo, AND then all the mods included, kept me playing up until i was 17, The MISERY mod is what kept me playing heavy i recommend browsing through mods after first playthough , but anyway ive had alot of good memories with this game, i dont care if im 60 if they release another STALKER game count me in!
