I really enjoyed this video. I created six owls using your technique and then cut them out. Then I took greeting card stock and printed it with "Happy Birthday," "Whoo's thinking of you?," etc, using photoshop. Once the cards were printed, I used a glue stick and added an owl to the front of each one. So much faster for me than creating an entire card from fabric, plus I can always set aside some owls to custom create a card for a special occasion.
Adorable owls! The one you don't like is my favourite...he's an academic owl...he's got a purple mortar board and Cape ready for graduation 😊😊 Thank you for all your videos...I love your work and your infectious enthusiasm!!
Hi Julia, you make free motion look so easy. I’m working on a crazy quilt wall hanging and this is a great for that project. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Karen, I love crazy quilting and hope to incorporate more in my work next year. I've done a couple of purses-each turns out so unique. Have a great weekend and happy sewing! Julia
So cute!!! Can’t wait to see how you use them. I may give these a try as I have the Inktense pencils and also the blocks. I’m thinking of adding them to handmade cards for grandchildren’s birthdays. Thanks so much Julia. Blessings, Linda Hardesty
Hi Vicki, Thanks so much for your kind words and another order from my Etsy shop! I so appreciate it! Your order goes out today. Have a great weekend, Julia
These are lovely - fun project. Must have a go. These pencils are made by Derwent in the UK in the Lake District near a lake called Derwent Water ( pronounced Der - went as in “I went out”). They have made pencils for over 300 years and have a pencil museum
I'll be doing some owls....but then I noticed your cuff! It's different than the "usual" felted and stitched cuffs you do. I'll try to find your link to this type of cuff. Got any clues that can help me? Would it be mixed in with other cuffs, or is there a yt of yours with just this cuff?
Hi Phyllis, This cuff was made from an old leather belt. I haven't made these for a long time. I'll have to put it on my list! So many projects and so little time...:) Julia
I was just gifted a Singer Heavy Duty 4432 low shank sewing machine for my birthday. I am new to sewing, but have enjoyed years of creativity using other meduims. Your free motion applique has me dreaming of taking my art to another level! Is there a free motion foot I can buy for my machine? If so, what do you recommend please?
Hi, I googled your machine and this is the foot that came up: www.amazon.com/SINGER-Stippling-Embroidery-All-Metal-Low-Shank/dp/B00G6TYQMM Before purchasing, you may want to check with a sewing machine dealer. Thanks so much for watching and have fun! Julia
SO, I have a very basic 1980s Singer Merritt with BASIC stitches. I JUST literally discovered how to cover the feed dogs (as I can't lower them, I have to cover them with a little plate).. So, question, you said that when you lower your feeddogs your stitch length goes to ZERO? Is that what it should be set at then?
Hi, I have one machine that I manually set to 0 when I free motion stitch. The instruction book that came with the machine says to set the length to "0". I will say that I have forgotten to do this on occasion without any harm. Hope this helps. Julia
So cute!!! Did you have another layer on back of project while you were free motion sewing or just batting? I am just learning to free motion stitch and Love all your video's. Thanks for sharing your talent:) Judy
This is my last comment on your trip to Florida. You're probably already here. But here goes. Space bags for fabric. It really works. Have a safe and pleasant trip down.
Hi Marian, The Space bags were a life saver! We got everything in our car- including our cat! I am enjoying the warm, sunny weather. My sewing area is half of our guest bedroom. It is a very large space and I feel very spoiled! I'm getting is set up and organized. Enjoy your day! Julia
So happy the Space Bags worked. I had seen a smaller car on the road, a Cube, and realized it was the only way. I'm glad you're in Florida for the winter. We're getting our second COLD FRONT tonight might get down to 84 tomorrow. Talk to you soon.
Hi Susan, I am using the Janome Memory Craft 8200. Mine is 10+ years old. I like the Janome and they have a varied of price lines. But there's many good brands.
Love these owls! My free motion presser foot will be here tomorrow! Thank you so much for the inspiration. I found your channel when I was looking for gel printing fabric ideas and I haven’t left! One question on this video, how do I remove the pencil marking ?
Hi Karole, Most of the pencil markings are covered up with stitching or ink and are not noticeable. You can use a dressmakers waterbased marker as well.
Just got my pencils and medium yesterday and now am ready to give it a try. Have one question? Did you let your owls dry before painting or ironing? Thank you so much for all your help.
Hi Faye, I don't find it necessary to completely dry my projects before ironing. It is important to read the directions on the back of your medium and apply heat for the length of time it says. Have fun! I love my Inktense!
So in love with these beautiful critters! Thanks for sharing so much inspiration. I'm a newbie to collage art quilting and a new subbie to your channel. Your videos have been so helpful in helping me to jumpstart and explore this style of art.
Julia, loved this lesson and I am going to try it....sometime later I am finished making pillowcases. I was wondering if you could tell me where I can find the pressing cloth you used. Thanks💓You are wonderful.
Hi, Here is a link to the pressing cloth that I use. It comes in a pack of two. I like it because I can see through it. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Creating. Julia amzn.to/2KvBPoC
Beautiful, so cute. And so quick, my sewing machine doesn't allow me to just move on to the next owl so quickly what kind is sewing machine do you use?
Hi Kim, I am using a Janome in this video, but I also use an inexpensive Elna for free-motion stitching. The fabric should move freely under your pressure foot. I use a free-motion foot and lower my feed dogs. Thanks for watching! Julia
stitchesbyjulia I have a Janome, what tension setting do you use for the freestyle and are you using the 00 stitch setting but with 0 length? Thank you.
Hi Julia, I did not get a reply from you. So what would be a good size for when creating patches? For instance your owls are adorable what size are they?
I will be cutting around them and using them as a fabric embellishment. I’m thinking of adding them to small zippered pouches. I will do another video showing the process. Thanks for watching. Julia
Hi Gina, After heat setting is stays quite permanent. Here is a video on a experiment I did with different paints on fabric. I heat set and washed the piece with little change to the color.. I activated the dyes and paints with both water and a fabric medium. I was surprised at the end results. Thanks for watching: ruclips.net/video/UH-ZzA9md9I/видео.html
Watching you stitch Julia is poetry in motion. If I could be half as good as you I would be happy. I am on a machine embroidery workshop this weekend in Chester which I am looking forward to. Your little owls are just beautiful I could see them as cute little brooches. My granddaughters watched your video last week and said you are a very beautiful lady and very clever too.😊 Thank you for a fabulous tutorial Julia, have a wonderful weekend. Big hugs and loves Dorothy xxxx🙋🏻😘❤️

Hi Linda, I love the handmade card idea. People ask me all the time which I prefer- the blocks or the pencils- which do you use the most? Julia
So cute! I worked on my first free motion project today and it is really sketchy but it really is fun. I enjoy your inspiration, thank you.
You gave these owls Personality. They're so CUTE.

Hi Julia, I love watching you create! Very inspiring. About how tall and wide our your drawings?
I love this, what brand embroidery foot are u using?
Hi, I am using my Janome Memory Craft Sewing Machine. Here is the link to the foot: amzn.to/2ooTlm5 Thanks for watching!

Hi Julia, I did not get a reply from you. So what would be a good size for when creating patches? For instance your owls are adorable what size are they?
I’m so sorry Cathy, I must have missed your comment. My owls measure approximately 2”x 3”. Some are a bit more square.
Thank you! What size needle are you using?
Hi Andrea, I am using a size 14 sharp. Thanks for watching. Julia
They are adorable. If you were to first put a layer down of fabric medium and then paint it won't bleed as much
So what do you do with them? Do you cut them out into a rectangle or do you cut around them????
I will be cutting around them and using them as a fabric embellishment. I’m thinking of adding them to small zippered pouches. I will do another video showing the process. Thanks for watching. Julia
These are so darling! You are so talented!
Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Cathy, I still have some sitting in my sewing room! I did add some to cards. So glad you enjoy the videos! Julia
Ánd if you apply the fabric medium well over the outside stitching line, the fabric won't fray either when you cut it 😁
Hi Els, Thank you so much for the tips!
Love these little fellas, so cute. Thanks for the tut, i enjoyed it heaps. XTIBBYX
Tfs👏💖
😍🇧🇷♥️
