This line was just phenomenal, the designs were oozing character and personality, the transformation schemes were super creative and the toys practically mass-shifted. Can you imagine waht we could've gotten if the budgets hadn't been cut and if Takara had kept their "we repaint the toys to bring out the absoulte best of them" mentality?
Looking back, they made some really iconic designs for a lot of existing characters in Prime. Wheeljack especially might be may favorite look for the character. Starscream shows his personality in his design better than most versions do. Ratchet was pretty much what fans wanted out a modern version of him since Classics, long before the Masterpiece or Studio Series 86 figures existed. Soundwave and his blank screen face and vow of silence really exaggerated the no-nonsense loyal personality he always had.
Just saw your tierlist of toylines a couple days ago. As someone who grew up on Transformers: Cybertron, I would LOVE if you made a top 10 Cybertron toys
I LOVED the Transformers prime line, with the exception of Airachnid...to this day the Prime version of Wheeljack is still my definitive toy of him, and he didn't even make your list! I also loved the Arcees that came from this line, the first edition one with it's impressive pseudo mass shifting, the PRID one with its gorgeous form factor, and the Beast Hunters version that made an EPIC Flamewar repaint
I recall seeing a rumor regarding TFP Ratchet getting an update in Legacy year 1. Disappointed that didn’t end up happening, but with how year 1 treated Prime characters, it’s for the best that he might come later.
God... I seriously regret not troop building that Vehicon. It has always been one of the most fun transformers to just play with, to keep my hands busy. It is literal perfection.
I own the APC Optimus, and it's an absolute delight. The wonderful first ed mold is only made better by the addition of a gorgeous Star Saber, plus a second copy of each weapon in more accurate colors, so you could recreate Optimus dual-wielding. I went to great pains to collect the whole Team Prime, but Optimus is the crown jewel of that collection.
I bought the 3rd party apc prime bulkhead because frankly i cant afford the eye watering prices of the original but it is a masterful piece for sure. I wish it was more available
I knew that Bulkhead was gonna be way up on that list. The first time I played with it, I was so amazed as to how that compact vehicle can mass shift into a hulking robot.
I feel like the only person that really doesn't look like prime, however I appreciate these toys I've gotten my hands on some 1st editions (starscream specifically) being extremely good toys
I absolutely adored the dead end figure felt like a repaint that gave new life to a already amazing figure I think the's the main omission from your list for me. I wish i could get my hands on the FE figs
I used to have the Prowl version of Smokescreen. I didn't like to transform him, or the arm panels, but I really loved the look of that toy. For a Bumblebee I got the black repaint of the Beast Hunter verson and he is SO cool :D The First Edition Optimus is probably still my favorite Optimus Prime ever. And I'm really mad they never reused the Vehicon transformation scheme! It would be PERFECT for a female character!!
A lot of it is subjective in terms of how you feel about the character designs. My personal favorite Prime toy is Rumble because I love that design, and the transformation is solid.
IMO the First Edition Optimus Prime truck has windows too small, so I prefer the bigger windows on the RID mainline toy, which is pretty good in its own right. (Though I’m biased as I have one but I it has minor flaws in tiny fragile tabs and the clear forearms could be a turnoff)
I do not begrudge you at all for putting the Legion class Cliffjumper at number 10. Those legion class toys were all around pretty good for the price point. Heck, the legion Airachnid was much better than the deluxe. I know my son loved them a lot and I enjoyed them too. Actually, I think my son preferred these mini-class Transformers since you could get a lot of them for cheap. Selecting Cliffjumper to represent the class is a great choice. He had a fun transformation.
Great list! 💯 % agree with Cyberverse CJ (and by extension, Tailgate) being the best Legends/Legion Class toy ever made! His play factor & interactivity at such a size remains sublime!
Tbh swap out smokescreen for wheeljack, the fauxforming on smokescreen is atrocious, yet wheeljack has none of that, those were the 2 prime toys I had as a kid and the wheeljack was superior.
A good list, though and while I love them, I’m not as enamored of the first editions of Prime and Bulkhead as some (I actually really like the mainline Bulkhead), possibly because it took so long to get them. My own list: 1 First Edition Starscream 2 Mainline Vehicon 3 Soundwave 4 Beast Hunters Dreadwing 5 Wheeljack 6 Ratchet 7 Abominus combiner set 8 Ripclaw 9 Mainline Bulkhead 10 Huffer
I will say prime was the 2010's cybertron how 5-8 bots on earth based on a mountain A second prime appearance from a sword 4 Omega keys Breakdown Purple eye Starscream David kaye 3 human kids Military association More to my words
A little while ago I transformed my first edition Arcee for the first time in years. and because I forgot how certain parts of the transformation worked, I broke her foot. I hate myself for doing that.
They really didn’t have to go that hard on a troop building figure or let alone the design in general. I’m just gonna say it, The Vehicons had the best looking design in the whole show only to be used as canon fodder.
That’s why they are so special, no one ever thinks of the cannon fodder unless the cannon fodder is made really good, and the vehicons are just the best made of the line
These are my top 10, not in any particular order 1st Edition Optimus 1st Edition Starscream 1st Edition Cliffjumper 1st Edition Bulkhead RiD Wheeljack RiD Vehicon RiD Soundwave RiD Knockout 3rd Party APC Toys Night Countess (Airachnid) 3rd Party APC Toys Dark Master 2.0 (Megatron)
I really liked the beast hunters voyager Optimus. Probly would have put him on the list instead of smokescreen. Also, kinda shocked by the lack of any Predacons.
The one issue with Beast Hunters Optimus is that unlike Shockwave and Smokescreen, who had the removable armour to allow the figure to balance matching the rest of the toyline and look like the character in the show, Optimus had allthe mad max styling moulded in, like the new takes on other characters, like Bee, Ratchet or Bulkhead, so it wasn't the best representation of the design from the cartoon. I'd also say with BH Optimus there is the issue, at least to me that the Voyager... something about the proportions doesn't quite capture the bulkiess of the design, the Ultimate one does capture that bulkiness, but chooses that weird 5 gun ring thing over the jetpack he's meant to have.
During a move I thinned out my collection and got rid of some of my prime figures, and I regret getting rid of Arcee, Ultra Magnus and wheeljack. Would still love to get the Takara translucent terrorcon cliff jumper.
9:58 Alex Milne's design from the Lost Light series is probably one of the better examples of doing a Generations take on a Prime character (should the Legacy team ever make a new version of him).
Do you think you could do a here’s 10 video on 10 transformers prime toys that need a legacy update? Or a here’s 10 wish list for transformers prime legacy toys.
Rip Starscream off the list and slot PRiD Arcee in there. Hell, with Smokescreen, it'd be better to have Takara's releases from the Transformers Go! line on there, with more show accurate coloring.
Just goes to show how good of figures we could get if budgets weren’t constantly being cut
This line was just phenomenal, the designs were oozing character and personality, the transformation schemes were super creative and the toys practically mass-shifted. The wheeljack figure was on point
Arcee as well!!!!
The Vehicon mold is the only mold I have gone out of my way to buy every repaint and variant, it's genuinely just that great of a toy.
Just saw your tierlist of toylines a couple days ago. As someone who grew up on Transformers: Cybertron, I would LOVE if you made a top 10 Cybertron toys

The only main Prime figure I own is the Vehicon, and four of them! Better yet, I got them at $5 each at 5 Below!
Rip Arleen Sorkin.
It's nice to see someone sharing my love of Legendsclass Cliffjumper.

Smokescreen is so fiddly, I have never transformed it without something popping off.
100% agree! However, there is a point against the Vehicon, and that is the clear plastic. Mine has unfortunately cracked...
Nice list TJ. The Vehicon was really well done for sure.
A lot of it is subjective in terms of how you feel about the character designs. My personal favorite Prime toy is Rumble because I love that design, and the transformation is solid.

My fav out the set was the predaking with the wings that sprang out

The legion class Skywarp that I have from the next series, RID 2015, is actually pretty good.
Why can’t we have legion class and legends class and core class coexist for a particular transformers series. Always has to be one or the other.
So much of the clear plastic on my zombie cliffjumper cracked.
