I think we could use someone like Mashita in our lives. He's optimistic in a vicious way, but grounded in reality. A bit of a bastard who made an old man meow only to one up him with a hiss, yell at him for not celebrating a case closed, and the first thing he wants to say when he rings up Yashiki is to tell him "I ran so hard that I wanted to puke."

I know a guy IRL who reminds me of Mashita. He's cold but caring. Has military experience, a psychologist and coaches to support me becoming Esports player. He can call me a retard and I know damn well I deserved it (still makes me mad). Or we genuinely share a good laugh and can enjoy eachothers silent company. He's busy alot of the time but when he makes the time, its always a pleasent surprise. I never really knew why he kept ties with me after a break, when I turned 18, but I'm grateful he did. He and I wear our hearts on our sleeves but I sense an older soul in him. And Its always interesting talking to him and always has a new story to tell.
Only difference is we're both in our 20's but our backgrounds are like night an day.
I'm lucky to have that. One of the reasons I enjoyed Death Mark so much as a series. Makes their dynamic relatable to me. As I am super introverted from another country I feel better knowing someone has my back.

I suppose saving Sakamoto would allow Yashiki to more sincerely “forgive” the Departed in addition to returning the girls, since everyone else who got killed were either responsible for or contributed to reigniting the trauma of the spirits except for these three.
Besides that, the Departed only started her haunting after stealing Michiho’s and Douryou’s bodies, so I suppose not killing Sakamoto allowed the spirit to remain relatively “pure” and benevolent enough to remember to return her victims’ bodies. Like the equivalent of spirits murdering your partners because they still hold a grudge in previous games, but this time they’re doing it out of gratitude to your benefit.

Out of the three, NG feels the best because the ghosts feel like they’re taken seriously. DM2 is sadly pretty weak cuz it’s just too campy compared to the other two. Even the silliest NG design really strikes - probably the Momotaru ghost.
Kashima suffered the most from the art style change. Just a direct rip of the base model (tall masked woman with coat but basically human) would have been way better.
Still wish NG and DM2 had a collector’s version like the original with the really good art and bio booklet.

    • @gumba2953
      @gumba2953 2 месяца назад +125

I thought it started really strong, the atmosphere was there, but the cases just didn't seem to develop the overall cast and the dynamic of the story as much as I would've liked to. The new supporting characters were often kind of just "there" (I feel like the game could've used a chapter where the main partner/target is Sakamoto, as her character barely has a reason to exist in the story). Also, conceptual development of the Departed really stalled during the midgame, and accelerated a lot at the end, making it feel less like an overarching story element and more like just the last in a series of somewhat disconnected ghost encounters.
By the time the conclusion began approaching, and the "who's the departed" question became more prominent, everyone and everything felt pretty close to where they were at the start of the journey, despite the many hours of playtime. And speaking of said question, while the twist double answer was cool, imo it was brought down by the plausible options being pretty limited, and by the fact the doll had such little development - we barely manage to exchange a few words with it the few times we see it, then we read about her indirectly through notes and such, and all of a sudden she's dead and the story's over.
Also: Yashiki at some point remarks that school life must've been pretty odd for the possessed girls, since they're spirits from hundreds of years ago. That stuck out to me, cause from a writing standpoint it's so weak to just *tell* us about that, rather than *showing* it somehow through character interactions. I'm not sure how it could've been done in a way that didn't make it obvious that the two were possessed, but giving it all up and having them act fully as the most normal school students right until the reveal is an underwhelming way to go about it. In fact, the characterization of the two girls is kind of weak overall. Personally I would've really liked for Himeko to ever show some kind of affinity to mold, perhaps even in some metaphorical/indirect way, but instead she's painfully normal for the whole game, and only becomes "moldy" for a minute at the end before fusing into the Departed's final form.
Overall I definitely liked the game and I especially enjoyed Manly's playthrough, but theres multiple aspects that couldve been approached better to make the story far more effective.

@@gumba2953 I think its interesting the way they make the departed case develop really late. It shows how hopeless yashiki really is, and just how much he needs more competent help. Konoe being very mad at Yashiki would normally be a cliche trope, but actually completely justified in this case. Mashita basically solved who the departed is after the few hours hes been around for, so he was right scolding Yashiki for not actually investigating anything.
I do think the way they approaches things makes the horror aspect really weak, and much more like a mystery case, except sherlock actually helps solving the case only in the last chapter.

Yashiki's still the guy who can show compassion for spirits and recognizes that they're only corrupted by their grudges, but man did they write him to be so incompetent. When Izumi said that the Departed was pretending to be someone, everyone in the school should instantly become a suspect, yet he didn't really do much with this information (Mashita calls him out on it later on lol). Having the previous Mark Bearers come by because you can't trust anyone there would've been better justification for their appearance imo, but the story doesn't really acknowledge him basically bringing outsiders to school. When the girls told him that they were cursed for months and all they got was a different hair color and a face mark... no way he didn't think of them more suspiciously. It's even worse when you consider that in the first game, which only happened months before this one, he was basically played by Mary the whole time, so you'd think the dude would learn to be skeptical of his new allies.
Otherwise, it's still great to see Yashiki's story continue and seeing the Mark Bearers come together just to help him is endearing, although their presence is a detriment of the new characters in the game. Hopefully in the sequels, he's learned from his mistakes here and eventually become that man we see in that one bad end of NG.

It made the user to be always on the edge since something could always creep out of the environment. I love Death Mark 2, but it feels like it lacks direction on how they wanted it to end, in the first Death Mark and NG, it feels like we always running out of time, we look for how to counter/fight and or save the spirits while getting rid of the roots, in the first game, it was the Death Mark, second, it was Kakuya origin, but in Death Mark 2, there's a lot of stuff about M city, the ritual, curse, clock tower mysteries that hasn't solved yet, it's like we barely making out alive with pure luck, or dare I say "with how chad we are".
The buildup in the first 2 games is great, with each twist opening up a path to our answer, in this one, the question piled up without getting the full answer, which is fine in some cases.

It says a lot about this plot when Mashita can solve the case within two days lol. If Yashiki didn't have a bleeding heart and had Mashita with him from the get-go, the entire case would be done within a week.
The plot was stretched out way too much, but I'm glad that this case gave Yashiki a sense of identity now. I didn't like that the plot required Yashiki to be clueless and aimless, but it strengthened the fact that he does NEED someone to ground him (aka Mashita) while investigating. The emphasis on teacher-student relationship thing is still so weird to me, but I'm glad Yashiki doesn't reciprocate any of their feelings. I'd rather he focus on helping people and spirits instead of (forbidden) romance lmao.
The new characters here are a missed potential tbh, especially Sakamoto. Bringing in the previous Mark Bearers slightly overshadowed the new cast (besides Mashita, he HAS to be with Yashiki). Having Mr. Konoe as a partner in the first chapter was nice. Imagine if we could investigate with Sakamoto or Abe? That'd be fun.
If they're going to make Death Mark 3, I really hope they just keep Mashita in as Yashiki's permanent partner (ofc there's still an option to swap in and partner with the new characters) cuz without someone like Mashita, Yashiki's gonna be wandering around lmao (I bet this was the case with Saya when they were investigating cases together). If only they kept her initial attitude of 'you're my rival in this case so no way am I gonna help you!' (like Abe did) or smth else... Doryou was so-so for me until Chapter 6-7 where she started being as obvious as Michiho.
It made me feel sad seeing Yashiki depend on two teenage girls that he barely knew and didn't even suspect a single thing (boy wtf?) when he had some of the adult Mark Bearers there for him. The girls were a big part of the game, but the time with them felt forced and wasted, it just didn’t feel meaningful or emotional at all. All the suggestive fanservice stuff was cringe-inducing and cheapened them even more.
So the ending(s) too felt unsatisfying.
I almost felt sympathy for them after Michiho ”died” and Douryou was talking about how close friends they were, like sisters. But at that point it was already blatantly obvious who the enemy was.
NG introduced characters so well, I was confused how badly they chose to do it this time.
The old and new characters were so separated from each other, with Yashiki being the only proper link between them. New characters lacked interesting relationships/interactions with one another or with characters we already know and care about.

The whole "horrifying ritual done to innocent girls in the past as a weirdly twisted tradition of an isolated Japanese town" thing actually struck me as very similar to some of the plot lines in the Fatal Frame series. Kind of an interesting parallel. When that part was revealed I started thinking "okay, Yashiki needs an occult camera now" lol

I kinda wish that there was a bad ending where all of your companions died, like in the original and NG. Like, not gonna lie, I kinda expected that if the bad ending happened that way, then Douryou and Michiho would become the departed in Yashiki's mansion if you didn't save everyone you could. A bit of a disappointment that the only bad ending is if you mess up who the departed is, though I kinda get it.

Not done with full video but finished main game I’m kinda sad about the missed potential of the characters in this game by that being Sakamoto and the Headmaster as companions. I’m full on conspiracy theorist that Sakamoto’s design is similar to Yashiki’s sister - the black rabbit motif in particular. I wonder if she would have reminded Yashiki of her if they spent more time on her character. Also the Headmaster could have been the one to help Yashiki discover The Departed’s past using the previous headmaster’s journal beforehand

I love how triumphant the music is when you're saying "I just want to try to save everyone ... Because I'm the Spirit Doctor" while every person you have tried to save is dead (as well as some bystanders) and every spirit you have tried to save has been devoured, except like the pool one. It's such a funny "fuck yeah!" moment in that context.

I think in this series, this game is the least scary, only on a few occasions did it feel scary, none of the spirits in my opinion were quite as scary as the first two games, and none of the ghosts stories made my skin crawl compared to say the Screaming Author from Spirit Hunter. This game felt more like a thriller than horror.

Slightly disappointed at how predictable the ending was ngl, though I didn’t know what’s the story behind the departed but I think all of us guessed the ending already early on. The oversexualization of women and girls here is worse than ever, I had so many icks here and there (sadly expected it considering the previous games). *Mashita:* I'm only helping you for the money. I-it's not like I _like_ you or something, Yashiki-baka.
    ---
God, both the Departed's transformations were so uncomfortable to look at, seeing as it's pretty obvious what they were _supposed_ to look like.
    ---
It's probably for the best the two girl lost their memories. Then they won't have to remember all those fan-servicey moments while the Departed was pretending to be them.
    ...
OH NO! They're gonna remember the fan-servicey moments now!!!
    ---
After watching this series, I'd say Death Mark 2 has been my least favourite. It's not as scary as the previous two and, as Manly talked about, the ghosts are not as creative and surreal in their designs; they frankly look rather plain or goofy most of the time. I also don't find their stories or sections to be all that memorable. NG is my favourite out of all them, because I find the spirits were very memorable, both in their design and their stories. The Screaming Author chapter is definitely the one that stands out for me, and remains my favourite case in the entire series.
And as I've mentioned in earlier comments, the fan-servicey elements are also really bad here, even worse than the first Death Mark. You could argue that it's meant to be part of the theme about the Departed's love for Yashiki, but those moments still really ruined the story for me.
But I don't dislike Death Mark 2. The whole mystery about who the Departed was was pretty interesting to follow, even if it was pretty obvious from the beginning. I just don't think it's quite as strong as the previous two games.

NG remains my favourite too: strong plot and pacing, great characters and interesting spirits.
Also it feels like there’s more (meaningful) choices for the player. Satisfying endings.
Also gorgeous art and atmosphere, and good soundtrack.
I also really loved the Screaming Author, definitely one of the best parts of the series. The atmosphere, the art, the story… just 10/10.

same NG is literally one of my favorite games of all times 😭😭😭 I loved everything about it and I still do to this day lol. The spirit designs in NG were the perfect mix of beatiful and grotesque, even the blob monster one. Like considering the backstory, the designs make perfect sense. And I got attached to almost all of the characters, especially the main trio. Watching their death CGs actually hurts my soul lol. Whereas with Death Mark, I think we all just kinda collectively did not get too attached to anyone other than Mashita lol. I like the characters, but they don’t feel like they matter to Yashiki that much. And with Death Mark 2, it’s also kinda hard to get attached to the new characters, because we’re more or less forced to suspect every single one of them of being the big bad.
Coincidentally, I don’t remember many fan service CGs in NG - if you count that one Rosé’s death scene as one. The angle is definitely not a typical fan service CG lol
Sorry for the rant, I just really really love this series (especially NG that game is my spiritual child (?)) XD

    • @LiliumSnow
      @LiliumSnow 2 месяца назад +4

@@hajimesbiggestsimp Yeah, NG I think did a better job in having you develop an emotional connection with all the characters, both the companions and even the spirits. Death Mark 2 I can see tried to do that with Douryou & Michiho, but it kind of felt a bit forced (which actually makes sense given the big reveal). Plus, their relationship with Yashiki, even after they're brought back in the True End route, had always kind of bordered on being a bit inappropriate. 😅
There were at least two really fan-servicey CGs in NG - one was Rose's second death CG in the elevator, as you mentioned. But before that one, there was one with Aunt Natsumi after she gets attacked by Kakuya, and Akira had to take off her top to see if she had been affected with the same "mouths-appearing-on-body" curse thing.
There was also the one you see of Hazuki in a magazine at the beginning where she's posing in sexy lingerie as her idol persona. But I'm not sure if I should really count that one, because it at least made more sense to have in context.
But yeah, NG actually held back on the fan-service CGs; another reason why I enjoyed NG more than the other two games in teh series.

There's something about SH 1s spirits that I always enjoyed (I think its because the smearing and exaggerations remind me of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), but that bad ending with Rose for the Screaming Author always stuck with me. As for characters, I agree that the cast in NG was great just because it was smaller and the personal connection some of them had with certain cases. Allowed them to be fleshed out way more.

Was a fun right from the start to end. I do agree some things did feel a lil lackluster compared to its previous games. I enjoyed DM and NG especially for their bone chilling ghost designs and backstories, coming across DM's fascinatingly creepy concept art is how I found out the series. I do like them bringing back the mark bearers (especially everyone's favourite pahanomal cop), but I wish they utilized and fleshed out the new charas more (c'mon chuuni kid use your 'cursed' eyes more)
Fun fact, idk if the steam page has mentioned this but the JP title for Death Mark II is "Shibito Magire" or roughly TL'd to "Bite of the Departed", hence why the brides kept going on about wanting to eat or "bite" Yashiki.

3:16:03 if I recall well.. its the audio drama with the blue mark! an alternate reality where Mashita and Rose Mulan teamed up to stop the corrupted (due to his failure to save the bearers of the mark) Yashiki.
Mary has her white gothic lolita alternate design concept art used in this alternative story.. spoilers... if I recall well, it ended with white Mary and Rose defeating Yashiki, Rose and white Mary had a talk before Mary completely exhausts her life after the eventful night. Also yeah, we could hear the late sibling of Yashiki in this audio drama! We got to see her perspective at the time when Yashiki first arrived at the mansion with no memories.
    ...
I say, I suggest supporting the team behind the series, but yeah, you can also check out a youtuber's upload of the bonus content, it even has some kind of Q&A, and a song that may have white Mary's thoughts/feelings for Yashiki in that alternative world.

I binge-watched Death Mark and then NG before watching this series. I enjoyed Death Mark 2, but not as much as the previous two. Spoilers below.
As Manly touched on, I think the biggest difference is the hook. The personal involvement that the main character had.
Death Mark 1: You have the death mark, so it's personal from start to finish. The tension builds with each case you solve that doesn't dispel the mark.
NG: The game has an arguably overly-long intro where you bond with Ami, only for her to get whisked away. "Where is Ami?" is in your head the whole time, and you gradually bond with Akira's friends as well. When the friends are threatened later in the game, you really feel it.
Death Mark 2: I guess the hook is "who is the departed?" which is pretty weak in comparison. I didn't care that much about any of the characters, and not being able to save most of the victims really hurt the story. If there's no choice, there aren't any stakes so the tension felt much lower than the previous two games.
There also was seemingly more repetition without meaning, like with the lost teeth. Even things like the D-man postcards in the previous game were repetitive, but there was a little riddle attached to them and it tied into the first game's cast, which kept it fun. Also, was this game much shorter than NG? Even if it wasn't, it felt much shorter.
I'm really looking forward to the next game. I hope they bring back the primarily 1st person style, but I didn't mind the side-scrolling too much. I mostly hope the next hook is better and we have more time to get personally invested in the characters, with tension around the fact that we can save/lose them. NG is my favorite character-wise, but I agree that the execution with Mary and the tightness of the narrative really makes Death Mark 1 special.
Thanks for this play-through! It was a blast.

The Departed's true form looks a spirit giving birth to another spirit; while her second form seems to be inspired by a women with her legs spread? Very creepy to look at but not really scary. The spirits in this game look more funny than terrifying. The mystery was fun but the spirits from the first two games were the best. Although, it must be difficult to come up with new ideas when someone else has probably done said idea at least once. For example; every vampire, werewolf, zombie, evil doll, and spiritual haunting movie, anime, game, etc. If the idea's been done to death, you have to think of a different way to make it interesting.
Thank you for the double upload, and for playing this game. I can watch people play horror games but I can't play them myself since feels like I'll have an anxiety attack. Unlike Spirit Hunter and NG, (when I first watch them), I was able to watch this play through full screen so it's definitely not as scary as the other two.
Hope you have a great night/ day. 🥰

I think saving Sakamoto isnt what saves the two girls.
I think saving everyone you can save in each chapter is what gives you that ending.
Sakamoto was the one that could die or be saved in the last chapter.
You just failed at saving her first time round
