Finally! Exact same thing ford for word happened in my ‘06 pilot a week ago. I had the belt off ready to change and then found out I can’t move the cam shaft to line up timing. I’m not a mechanic but that pretty much tells me I’m screwed with this car. I couldn’t find videos on people teaching how to check valves after a timing belt snap. I love pilots but at this point I think I’m done with them. I’m gonna start thinking of what vehicle I can switch to that I don’t have to worry about this. Absolutely frustrating. Live and learn. I was not prepared for a curve ball like this either. Looks like it’s bicycle and bus while I save up. I didn’t even know this was a thing that happens, and have been learning about interference engines the last week. I like working on vehicles and I want to learn so maybe I’ll try and fix it in the future. I wish I would have learned when I was young though! Anyways thanks for your video it really helped. This is the exactly one of the type of videos I was looking for and it took a week to find it. Gotta love RUclips!!!
Same exact boat to the T. 2007 pilot died on I80 in 100 degree heat with 2 teens and 2 dogs and 3 bikes on the rack. I tried to restart several times. Thought alternator but not because there was still some power, fuel pump. Never considered the timing belt. I was about to get it changed out within a week or 2. It had been 103k miles since the last time. My mechanic said it’s a $300 gamble to test it but after hearing your story, I’m pretty convinced I damaged the engine. I haven’t taken as great of care of this car so don’t think it’s worth fixing. Thanks for all the clear info.

I haven't diagnosed it for sure just yet but a lot of things are pointing towards a timing belt issue. the only really different thing about my situation is that it seems like it happened right in the driveway, my daughter was backing out the car ever so slowly and then it quit, so there was no major speed involved, so I'm hoping maybe there's less damage. I'm thinking I will get it properly diagnosed and go ahead and do what it takes to repair it because with the current economy, getting another car would cost an arm and a leg, and I LOVE this car. I knew I should have taken care of this, but I kept putting it off. Oh well, wish me luck.
Any updates on your 2006? Just had my 2003 truck die in a similar fashion…super slow speed and just died. Before i pay for further diagnosis (og shop thinks it’s a timing belt, but they’re not equipped to deal with that), if there’s engine damage I’d rather sell or scrap. Any confirmed damage on yours?

I had a situation a while before this happened that I had missplaced the keys and had to get a new key made and then I found the original keys the day before this happened. so as soon as i found them, I tried them and they worked. but then the next morning it stopped working with those keys but I didn't think it was the keys cuz like I said, I tested them. well after several days of head scratching and money spent, i tried the newer keys and it worked. something about the chip in the key

Previous owner changed the timing belt at 100k mil, me as a second owner changed it at 195k mil ( mechanic shop) , now at 205k mil 1 year after it broke ( timing belt kit purchased on eBay for $140 apparently Honda genuine) but I doubt I was genuine, mechanic said it only damaged one of the cylinder heads / pistons / valve/ , tested under compression test , the others were fine , P0335 was my code when it happened on the road during driving , Crankshafts position sensor bank A, it snapped disconnected the sensor giving me that code , the car wouldn’t start anymore after it happened, so labor/ parts roughly $700-800 which is a lot less than other shops ,’here in San Antonio Texas, My Honda Pilot 2005 with 205k miles, well maintained, was hoping to keep it longer but not sure now if it’s gonna give me more trouble in the future , Thinking to switch to Toyota brand with timing chain and non interference engine
I agree w your decision. You know the vehicle. Dollar cost averaging will make or break you. 4 years of driving and that's 105 per month. Any time beyond that is $$ in bank.
I’m in the same vote my friend I have a 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L I’ve been the only owner my pilot has only 97,600 original miles on it but I’ve never changed the timing chain on it and last Thursday I went out to the supermarket in my neighborhood on my way home the oil pressure light came on my dash and I was very close on getting home so I kept driving about two blocks away from home the vehicle lii ok st power but before that I felt like a pull first so I pulled over not knowing what was going on I tried starting the vehicle but it wouldn’t start never in a million years would’ve I thought the timing chain jumped and it’s so bad that I damaged the valves in the engine unbelievable what I’m going through.
Also what I think I got out of this is be sure to use an Oem kit from Honda 340 bucks compared to 5,000 is a no brainer. Sorry about what happened, you sound very intelligent.
Yup just found out my timing belt broke. It bent half the valves busted a head. So my mechanic said best to get a used engine. I asked about rebuilding it. That would be $4,500. I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey ex-l J35A7 is my engine model. Well done some research and regardless I'm looking at $2,500 used or $4,000 brand new 🤔 I don't have the money for either at the moment. 😭 sad part is I've only had the van 6 months

Pull the head off not that hard. Send thr head to a machine shop to check for bent valves. Once off you can check for scouring on the piston heads. I had same problem with a 1995 honda odyssey. Replaced 2 valves , replaced head gasket with a few other gaskets put back in timing good as new has 300,000 miles
You say the mistake you made was waiting too long to change the belt the second time, but you were well within the mileage to change the belt. The belt change was due at ~205,000 miles.
I drive an 02 civic and the code is P1361 Top Dead Center Sensor 1 Intermittent Interruption. In my case my belt didn’t break but my tensioner stop tab sheared off making my belt loose and yup, skipped some teeth. Bent valve city !
I have the same problem, but I want to make sure if they replace the engine for sure the car will work or there any other problems that I don’t know off and it might not work after spending that much money!

If you know what to listen for you can diagnose a broken timing belt with one turn of the key. But if you have an interference engine and you manage to escape damage when it broke, hitting the starter could ruin all of that.
Man that's horrible. Mine slipped on startup in a mitsubishi 6g75 mivec v6 interference engine, I turned it off immediately changed the belt and water pump and it runs better than it ever has now. If you have a check engine light on, and you don't know why it could be your timing belt stretching, I had one on when I bought the car and was told it was from a cat delete. A month later that happened. I got extremely lucky, you have to get this done guys, mitsubishi wanted $2100. I watched you tube videos and followed it like the apostles did Jesus and prayed. Get this done every 70,000 miles or so just to be safe. Or this could happen. So many people don't even have a clue that they exist honestly, and if you have a belt over a chain, it's literally the most important part of your car. Alor of times when this happens, it happens on startup and you might get lucky like I did, or this will happen. Take care of your cars guys. Hope everything turned out OK man that sucks

I've owned vehicles with timing belts and vehicles with timing chains. I'm sure there are good reasons for manufacturers to use belts, but personally I think I'm done with belts. Chains just seem superior in general. Yes, they are more expensive to replace than belts, but I've never seen one that needed replacement (i.e. broke or stretched too far). Who needs the hassle of a $1500 "maintenance item" every 70K miles. Same goes for direct injection engines which periodically require expensive de-carboning of the valves.
wow ... I had no idea... My honda pilot just got 300 000 miles I lent it to a friend and while he was driving the timing belt broke ( I guess) and it still run for half mile while losing power and he tried to start the engine more than once, also I though that it was the fuel pump. . it has the factory timing belt. I was just planning to get it to the Honda's for service this month ... because ABS light , Airbags light on . , also suspension issues , and Alignment . considering all that stuff ... will it worth to fix it ??? what you think Guys. ??
I think it's good to factor time into how long the belt should last. I always heard 10 yrs or 100k miles. If it's an old belt it can harden just from age.
Maybe you should have replaced that before hand??? 🤷♂️ you have the same issue with timing chains it costs just as much or more to fix the tensioner and guide and when that goes parts of the teeth and chain will go into the motor.
60,000 is what Honda recommends when the vehicle is operating in temps over 100 for extended periods, your totally fine waiting till 60k you real start seeing them degrade after 80k. I work in Phoenix and have replaced at least 100.
Damn! This is exactly what happened to me except my kids were not w me. I had been getting a transmission code too so that’s very likely a problem after the engine gets fixed or replaced. You had no transmission problems?
@@DownloaderVideo my belt did not snap it was the tensioner bolt into the block that snapped on me. I put a junkyard engine in it. I believe it was my own error in my case
Dude, based on that bill you got SCREWED!!! Some of those parts had NOTHING to do with bent valves. The crank shaft rear main seal for example, that's on the BOTTOM of the engine. And $1200 for the machine work? To resurface the heads? That's OUTRAGEOUS??? I just had one done for under $400 and that included the valves and valve guides. He might be "reputable", but he's not honest.
Prevention is key! Driving hard (hard acceleration, driving style as revving high above 4,000 rpm) will definitely shorten the life of the timing belt. My 2004 Odyssey has 240K miles on the original timimg belt (I swear to God). I simply listen to the car and never push it to 3200 rpm, yes that's grandma style of acceleration but it prolongs the engine life.
I agree. I don't accelerate it harshly/suddenly at all. I let it time to accelerate. I changed the belt back at 200k miles, and according to records and carfax, vehicle never had the timing belt changed just inspected. I just wished I had purchased the Gates Branded, timing belt kit. I got the Dayco brand.
Yes, overrevving it for long periods of time can cause it to wear faster but 3200 is actually the optimal shift point for your car I have 2 hondas with both the 2.4L K-series and 3.0 J-series engines both with automatic transmission under a normal load acceleration it's actually programmed to shift at around 3000rpm. Anything more and that is when V-tec kicks in. If you are unsure about revving it higher then have your V-tec solenoid inspected. If there is a problem with the vvt system the ecu will slow the engine down and prevent you from running it at above a certain RPM. But if you only do stop and go city driving for short distances than it can actually harm the engine. Taking it out for an "Italian Tune-up" at highway speeds once in a while can clear the buildup of carbon.
The 4 cylinder Hondas and Toyotas are the best. I've had 1 from each get to 300,000+ miles. And I've seen many v6s go almost as far but I agree timing belts are becoming an obsolete option.
Listen if you'r timing belt broke you didnt take care of it. Do this every 75k -80k mi they say 100k but prevent engine rebuild/replacement at all cost you want the piston rings to go fist before you go there otherwise you have bad valve seals or the hg gave out or you ran it low on oil hence all the above. Your car is a baby it needs oil to the line at all times. Ask nissan with the v6 and Hyundai they're not gonna admit it but you'll look smart 😅
This is 100% exactly my scenario in my acura mdx. The only difference is I didn't got to a mechanic lol and I am doing it myself... and I am at a loss...I just got this car 4 months ago.
You tube is your best friend. And if you can find one for your car, a Haynes manual will save you a lot of heartache. It will give you step by step instructions with pictures to do anything you want to do to your car. Finding it though is the tricky part. But if you find one and you decide to use it, when the book tells you to do something that seems like a waste of time, DO IT ANYWAY. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
Sad story. Wonder if you used an OEM timing belt kit on the first replacement? I have been eye-balling the ASIN kit on rock auto. Looks to be less than $200.
Bought a 2009 honda pilot with 190,000 when Bought, now has 193,000 on it. When i bought it no one knew the timing history of when it was changed. Drove it for a month than decided to change the timing and water pump, its not worth the risk of destroying the motor
My timing belt went out while I was on my way to work. Luckily I stopped right in front at a transmission and auto repair shop. Fast forward a month later my car was ready. As a result, one side of the engine the valves were bent and the other side the valves were fine all and all the whole thing cost 3,500. I was stopped in traffic when my timing belt went out. I drive a 2005 Chrysler 300 limited with a 3.5L V6 with 216,724 miles. I never know anything about interference and non interference engines with timing belts until the timing belt went out. I've kept up with regular mantaince since when I first bought the car at 137,500 miles without an owners manual.
-cheaper -easier and simpler plus chains do have their issues as well. also when those toyota water pumps leak you have to drop the engine on most modern ones
I don't like a Honda! I think they're junk but boy you can't tell a honda lover that! They believe the garbage that "it's a Honda so you know it'll run forever!!!" Right? NEGATIVE! I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze and I replaced the timing belt at about 217k miles. Long overdue but she didn't break at 50 miles! Runs like a CHAMP! It's the most reliable engine I have ever had other than my 6.0 in my Silverado or the 350 that was in my 97 Z71. It's been even more stellar! Don't tell me those Honda's and Toyota's are more reliable than anything! The 2013 Sonata drinks oil like nothing I've EVER seen before! 130k on it...
Doesn't the manual tell you to change the T.B. every 60K-105K miles? Most people apply for severe driving, not normal driving as they may think, which will be 60K miles. Only use OEM or Aisin brand from a reputable seller. I even change the pulley bolts.
My wife has 2006 I spent $400 on vts just to find out it was timing belt my mechanic said he would charge $175 yo put belt to check for damage but is there a way to check if piston is cracked or damaged other than putting a kit on it it's a 2006 has 174k miles has new struts rotors brakes tires we want to keep it bscuz if we repair it at least we know what we got and put into it thnx

Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder Rides began timing chains beginning in 2002. My advice is to make sure it’s a timing chain and change that oil when needed.

FYI. The picture at 4:04 is not of the Timing belt but of the serpentine belt that runs Power Streering, Alternator and Water Pump...

Morale of the story: buy a car with a non-interference engine, and never ever pay thousands of dollars when the belt breaks!!
You would be limiting your options almost exclusively to older cars with less efficient engines. Getting a car with a timing chain is a better idea.
Morale of the story also is to USE OEM PARTS WHEN CHAGING TIMING BELT PUMP TENSIONER ETC. ... Peace

Chains just seem superior in general. Yes, they are more expensive to replace than belts, but I've never seen one that needed replacement (i.e. broke or stretched too far). Who needs the hassle of a $1500 "maintenance item" every 70K miles. Same goes for direct injection engines which periodically require expensive de-carboning of the valves.

wow ... I had no idea... My honda pilot just got 300 000 miles I lent it to a friend and while he was driving the timing belt broke ( I guess) and it still run for half mile while losing power and he tried to start the engine more than once, also I though that it was the fuel pump. . it has the factory timing belt. I was just planning to get it to the Honda's for service this month ... because ABS light , Airbags light on . , also suspension issues , and Alignment . considering all that stuff ... will it worth to fix it ??? what you think Guys. ??
Considering that a broken belt generally means death for an interferene engine, I would NEVER go beyond the recommended distance on a timing belt.
Just had my 2010 MDX timing belt break at only 75k. Valves bent. Always change the timing belt at 60k not 100k. Especially if you live where it's hot.
I think it's good to factor time into how long the belt should last. I always heard 10 yrs or 100k miles. If it's an old belt it can harden just from age.

Maybe you should have replaced that before hand??? 🤷♂️ you have the same issue with timing chains it costs just as much or more to fix the tensioner and guide and when that goes parts of the teeth and chain will go into the motor.
This is why you’re supposed to change them every 60,000 miles. Why risk it? Not worth the headache of going over the recommended miles.

60,000 is what Honda recommends when the vehicle is operating in temps over 100 for extended periods, your totally fine waiting till 60k you real start seeing them degrade after 80k. I work in Phoenix and have replaced at least 100.

Damn! This is exactly what happened to me except my kids were not w me. I had been getting a transmission code too so that’s very likely a problem after the engine gets fixed or replaced. You had no transmission problems?
Dang- same thing happened to me- however, I replaced the timing belt at 110k and it snapped at 151k- total bummer

Dude, based on that bill you got SCREWED!!! Some of those parts had NOTHING to do with bent valves. The crank shaft rear main seal for example, that's on the BOTTOM of the engine. And $1200 for the machine work? To resurface the heads? That's OUTRAGEOUS??? I just had one done for under $400 and that included the valves and valve guides. He might be "reputable", but he's not honest.
Based on this guy's story he probably did a lot of "while we are in there" items.
I don't think your shop replaced the original belt. Modern belts go 125K easy. ALWAYS ask for your old belt.

Pays to get the timing belt kits with everything you should replace while doing the timing belt. Most kits will have a new tensioner in them.

4000 or 6000 for them to fix or get new engine lol.. whole car cost us that much 4 years ago. I see some now go for 2500 now.
If you can find one for $2500 with reasonable mileage and have it checked up by a mechanic, I would buy asap.

Prevention is key! Driving hard (hard acceleration, driving style as revving high above 4,000 rpm) will definitely shorten the life of the timing belt.
My 2004 Odyssey has 240K miles on the original timimg belt (I swear to God). I simply listen to the car and never push it to 3200 rpm, yes that's grandma style of acceleration but it prolongs the engine life.
I agree. I don't accelerate it harshly/suddenly at all. I let it time to accelerate. I changed the belt back at 200k miles, and according to records and carfax, vehicle never had the timing belt changed just inspected. I just wished I had purchased the Gates Branded, timing belt kit. I got the Dayco brand.

Yes, overrevving it for long periods of time can cause it to wear faster but 3200 is actually the optimal shift point for your car I have 2 hondas with both the 2.4L K-series and 3.0 J-series engines both with automatic transmission under a normal load acceleration it's actually programmed to shift at around 3000rpm. Anything more and that is when V-tec kicks in. If you are unsure about revving it higher then have your V-tec solenoid inspected. If there is a problem with the vvt system the ecu will slow the engine down and prevent you from running it at above a certain RPM. But if you only do stop and go city driving for short distances than it can actually harm the engine. Taking it out for an "Italian Tune-up" at highway speeds once in a while can clear the buildup of carbon.

The 4 cylinder Hondas and Toyotas are the best. I've had 1 from each get to 300,000+ miles. And I've seen many v6s go almost as far but I agree timing belts are becoming an obsolete option.
Listen if you'r timing belt broke you didnt take care of it. Do this every 75k -80k mi they say 100k but prevent engine rebuild/replacement at all cost you want the piston rings to go fist before you go there otherwise you have bad valve seals or the hg gave out or you ran it low on oil hence all the above. Your car is a baby it needs oil to the line at all times. Ask nissan with the v6 and Hyundai they're not gonna admit it but you'll look smart 😅
This is 100% exactly my scenario in my acura mdx. The only difference is I didn't got to a mechanic lol and I am doing it myself... and I am at a loss...I just got this car 4 months ago.
You tube is your best friend. And if you can find one for your car, a Haynes manual will save you a lot of heartache. It will give you step by step instructions with pictures to do anything you want to do to your car. Finding it though is the tricky part. But if you find one and you decide to use it, when the book tells you to do something that seems like a waste of time, DO IT ANYWAY. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

Bought a 2009 honda pilot with 190,000 when Bought, now has 193,000 on it. When i bought it no one knew the timing history of when it was changed. Drove it for a month than decided to change the timing and water pump, its not worth the risk of destroying the motor

My timing belt went out while I was on my way to work. Luckily I stopped right in front at a transmission and auto repair shop. Fast forward a month later my car was ready. As a result, one side of the engine the valves were bent and the other side the valves were fine all and all the whole thing cost 3,500. I was stopped in traffic when my timing belt went out. I drive a 2005 Chrysler 300 limited with a 3.5L V6 with 216,724 miles. I never know anything about interference and non interference engines with timing belts until the timing belt went out. I've kept up with regular mantaince since when I first bought the car at 137,500 miles without an owners manual.
You should junk that Honda and got a Ford explorer with a timing chain
Those are some expensive parts. I bought parts on eBay for my Ridgeline and rebuilt the whole engine for about $500 in parts.

I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze and I replaced the timing belt at about 217k miles. Long overdue but she didn't break at 50 miles! Runs like a CHAMP! It's the most reliable engine I have ever had other than my 6.0 in my Silverado or the 350 that was in my 97 Z71. It's been even more stellar! Don't tell me those Honda's and Toyota's are more reliable than anything! The 2013 Sonata drinks oil like nothing I've EVER seen before! 130k on it...
Doesn't the manual tell you to change the T.B. every 60K-105K miles? Most people apply for severe driving, not normal driving as they may think, which will be 60K miles. Only use OEM or Aisin brand from a reputable seller. I even change the pulley bolts.
Remanufactured heads Honda pilot 2007 a pair $800 gasket kit $200. $1000-1200 same cost as replacing belt. Head replacements is simple work.
And If You or the mechanic dont put oem parts on the timing , pump tensioners for sure will have tbe same output , peace
My wife has 2006 I spent $400 on vts just to find out it was timing belt my mechanic said he would charge $175 yo put belt to check for damage but is there a way to check if piston is cracked or damaged other than putting a kit on it it's a 2006 has 174k miles has new struts rotors brakes tires we want to keep it bscuz if we repair it at least we know what we got and put into it thnx

I ended up selling the pilot. It was running perfect when I sold it. Be sure to take your odyssey to the dealer or at least have OEM parts.
