Note TW: It’s so nice to hear you advocating more work/life balance. Devoting one’s life to work, money, power to get ahead and set yourself up for some perfect future just leads to burnout and regret. My Dad was one of those people and that future never came to him. He committed suicide after an injury put him on permanent disability. He had made his whole life work and because he had prioritized it he lost all human connection to his family and friends, to the people that could have pulled him from the hole. He was only 45.
It’s okay to have drive, to want to get ahead or make money to be comfortable. But we should all remember to take care of ourselves, to find time to step away and get back to the things that make your life full.

your absolutely right. after seeing how positive and fun the dental industry is with his demeanor I'm definitely considering going into that field. looked at the acceptance rate for dental school and sadly don't know if I could do it. I enjoy seeing the full insights to the field through John. making me wanna dive into studying :)

The ending hit me hard, actually bawling right now. It’s crazy the timing of this vlog and the content - I remember when you first mentioned starting your own business and your work hustle and I was on a similar page and we hyped each other up. Now, literally past half year I’ve been having the same thoughts you have mentioned in this video.
Unfortunately my realization came after the passing of my dad this year. I worked so much and so hard and forgot to take a pause and to appreciate the things around me, and as a 30 year old woman I feel like I missed out on a lot.
I still have so much I want to do in my career, but moved by ass out to LIC to be closer to the city so it will be easier to do everything I always wanted to do. As a native New Yorker I’m a city noob lmao. Sometimes it felt like no one understands what I mean, but this video especially the ending statements seriously helped me a lot. Keep up the genuine vibes!

Couldn't agree more John. In my experience, I moved from Illinois to Tennessee to appreciate life and slow down a bit. I got my job after my pre - service teaching. And yes, you will constantly critique yourself to be the best for those you serve. So now I get to teach and work on being a semi normal person.

Couldn’t agree more about the work life balance. As I grew older, realized how work and life in medical field is endless. We are too busy looking after patients we forget about ourselves. Gotta take a break once in a while. Youth only comes once!!!

Wow, I remember I just scrolled through my explore page and came across your vlog about your residency and I was so amazed (and a bit concerning cuz you do have to think about yourself🙂❤️) about how you kept working non stop and I was like: “how does he do that? Is that how it is supposed to be later for me?” Cuz I’m almost done with high school and since the COVID happening I just think a lot about my future and everything else.
Now seeing that you came to this successful milestone, I’m truly proud of you. And it really does motivate me to be better, cuz a lot happened these past couple of months and I sometimes wonder: “how did I not give up already?”. But oh well, who doesn’t have rough times, right?

At first it was easy on me but now more hard things come up. I also backed to school so I find it hard to balance work and school and social life. After hearing that you used to work 3 jobs and 100hrs/week during dental residency, I understand now taht it takes lots of effort and time to earn the success 🥰

"Work is longer than life". I was once told this phrase by someone close to me. I gave up 10 years of my life to working my hearts out while putting everything else aside. @Dr. John Yoo, I've been watching your videos on this channel & your other channel & I'm seeing a mirror of myself in the life that you lead, esp handling a start-up dental clinic. I've also helped to start up a hospital in my country - Singapore. It resonates so much on my thoughts & reflections 2 years ago where I decided to make time for other things & my health and moved on to work which is less demanding. Your stress tolerance is sure higher than mine. I've landed myself in hospital a couple of times due to high stress. I lost my grandfather last year & I couldn't get to see him for the last time due to work. It's a huge regret which I carry with me forever. I'm happy on your reflections in this vlog. Keep up on the good work!

This was really insightful! I remember being in my 20s having 2 jobs, going to grad school, while preparing to go overseas to teach English (which never happened, but that’s another story). I was exhausted and missed a lot of important pieces of my youth because I was focused on school and work. At 31, I’m happy to be where I am in my life right now and know that without those stressful times I wouldn’t be here today. However, I do regret not slowing down and enjoying more of life.

Work life balance and delayed gratification hit me here. I am a 29 year old Korean-American med student year 2. I have been in school for all of my 20’s and gonna be studying till mid 30’s. I have definitely missed out a lot in life and not the type of guy who will take time off, due to the fear of getting behind. Just like both of you guys I am single(never had a gf) and mainly workout for stress relief. This vid definitely made me think about making changes in my life to improve my work-life balance. Keep up with the great content!

been struggling and thinking about work/life balance a lot lately and i 100% agree!!
I’m glad to see some show of tastebuds in this episode especially because Jason isn’t there cooking for you 😂
But honestly in terms of work ethic and how it’s changed, I think I’ve always wanted to grind hard and not have breaks but this pandemic has caused me to defer my graduation by 2 years and it’s been tough. While I’m grateful to at least have the opportunity to be with family, I’m slightly annoyed that I can’t contribute back to healthcare in a better way than if I were to progress in my MD.
However, like you said, we do have finite time and the work never really ends.
I think most of all, I’m glad you seem to be allowing yourself to rest a little more and spend time with your parents! Pamper yourself and get someone that pampers you!!🥰

Heya John!! Great video. I definitely think there’s a culture where people like to show off how many hours they work in a week. Almost like more is better. Work life balance is so important to me because at the end of the day, you’re replaceable at work but spending time with friends and family isn’t. So always great to make good memories with what really matters most. 😊
