    ahhh this is great. This is the kind of Irish step dance that most people can actually do, you don't have to an athlete to do it. I think it's wonderful.

      We call that buckdancing in Appalachia. It's for everyone, which is great.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy Год назад +6

      To be really honest, if you're not an athlete you can still do the dances. It's just the sharpness, high kicks and what nots that will be left out but if you can hit the floor right and you're not after entering a competition, you'll be fine. The oldest woman in my class is well in her 50's (or even 60's by now) and is just honest to herself: she will never get to the extremely high levels anymore but she also doesn't want to. She dances for the fun and learning something new and perfectly well knows that she isn't as sharp and quick as the rest.

      @@allisonforfornsed Well, that's what I try to say ;) my teacher has broken a lot of bones teaching Irish dance for I don't know how many decades by now and therefore has a hard time showing some of the steps. When she teaches new steps, it more than once happens that she says something like 'Ok so you actually do a cut here that is more than just a small 'up' of my leg' or 'jump... but actually jump, I just can't do that anymore.'

      Really, if you study history you will see that along with Jews and Romany (Gypsies) the Irish have been long despised and ridiculed. At one stage in the USA they were as badly treated as the black man. Signs were often seen in shop windows saying '"No Irish or Blacks should apply", if there was a vacancy. Boarding houses and the like were the same. Even the Irish don't care for each other. Ireland ( country) v. Nrth Ireland which is part of Britain.

    • @leanneneville2431
      @leanneneville2431 3 года назад +4

      @@PetroicaRodinogaster264 we went to Ireland a couple of years ago and I just admire them for their spirit and culture and their up
      Lifting music. We were taught a lot of history with our guide and believe me she definitely conveyed to all of us the misery, extreme poverty and obstacles that they faced in the past, especially the devastating effects of the potato famine. I have also seen Angela’s Ashes which does in my opinion give us some insight into the daily appalling conditions that they were faced with. I in no way meant to undermine their suffering, I just applaud their strength of spirit. My apologies if offence was taken.💐

    Great to see old time still around, pretty much the same whether it’s Irish, English, Cape Breton/Scottish, Canadian Ottawa Valley, British clog dancing in wooden soles, and maybe French. Come on free-style, and stuff any rules is what I say. And let it evolve through people power of different nations - without competition judges getting in the way.

      Tap dancings origins are pretty well-documented: NYC's Five Points neighborhood where Black and Irish were penned in together as undesirables. They didn't really mix, mind you, and probably didn't like each other as they competed to avoid winning the title of "most loathed" community in 1830s-1860s New York. They were, however, forced into such close contact that they were completely exposed to each other's cultures. They were also rivals as the primary competitors in the entertainment business.
      While other immigrant groups may very well have had a hard shoe folk dancing component in their culture, tap dancing was rooted in the Black and Irish ghettos of early 19th century NYC, and blossomed through America with the rise of travelling Vaudeville and minstrel shows.
      Although very recent "academic" attempts are taking advantage of current cultural dynamics to try to minimize, diminish, or outright remove any Irish influence in the development of tap dancing... A story for another day.
