Glad you liked the first episode so far! I think rebels is probably my favorite star wars story. The ghost crew being some of my favorite characters. I've absolutely rewatched it more than TCW. 12:50 In the show there's a few admittedly vauge moments that hit she may be more force senstitive than your average person but they're mostly season 3 & 4. most of her character arc is saved for the last seasons unfortunately. 18:00 They aren't officially part of the rebellion yet, none of them except hera even know about it's existance. lol that's fair she is actively trying to recruit Ezra. And it's in part due to his force sensativity, which puts him in danger from the empire. She genuienly cares about her kids and the crew, she's Space!mom. 22:50 Look he's the only one there and Hera is already used to sending children into warzones via sabine😆. Then there is kanan who was an actual child soldier for a bit.... the only person who started combat/military stuff at a reasonable age was Zeb. XD
The sticking point with Sabine being supposedly force sensitive is why didn't Kanan sense it? He and Ezra sensed each other right away. But he's been around Sabine for quite a while now and he didn't have an inkling that she was force sensitive? It just doesn't make sense, and makes it very clear that her force sensitivity was just an afterthought. Anyway, Sabine is a very different case from Ezra. Her skills were misused by the Empire from a very young age, and because of that, she *chose* to join the rebellion. Obviously, as we said in the video, we agree that Hera was in a tight spot and didn't have much choice but to send Ezra, but again, her mentality of "if you're not sacrificing for others, then your life is worthless" is VERY questionable. Now I will grant that because both her and Kanan were directly or indirectly involved in war from a young age (with Hera's father being a leader in the Clone Wars and Kanan being a Jedi padawan during that same time), that could absolutely impact her mentality regarding involving children in the rebellion 🤔
@ yeah, thats fair, you’d think the two Jedi she lived with would have sensed it even if it was only very little. Even Ezra himself questions it in Ashoka. You can always make the excuse that they did sense her and chose not to do anything about it but that’s just fan speculation. I think they just wanted another mandalorian Jedi 😆 Yea, no I won’t argue there. Sabine is a very different case and even though Hera didn’t have much other choice that line is pretty questionable directed at the child they just accidentally/sorta on purpose kidnapped lol. There may have been a better way to say it but I think it’s also an interesting line that shows her characters mindset. Plus they are also literally testing him, she wants to recruit him, maybe that’s part of why she says it. 🤷🏻♀️
@@PurpleLadyAphrodite Oh, for sure, Filoni wanted another Mandalorian Jedi. And he probably just wanted to make Sabine seem extra special. Anyway, I'm not really sure I'd call what Hera did a "test" since she couldn't have foreseen Kallus' trap, and if she had, I don't think she would've have willingly endangered her crew just to "test" some kid. Come to think of it...she's putting a *lot* of faith in this self-interested teenager she just met...again, she doesn't have much choice but STILL. Heck, maybe that's why she said something so questionable. She was like, "Okay, I need this kid to feel *really* bad in order to get him to help." 😂

Sabine is more tolerable than Ahsoka was in TCW. Especially since she's more composed, and it makes sense for her to be that skilled, having been trained by both the Empire and the Mandalorians. Ahsoka was only beginning her training with Anakin when she stood up to Grievous, a being who crushed Jedi Council Masters as if they were ninepins in a bowling alley.
Agreed. I will admit that even despite her Mandalorian/Imperial past, her many skills feel a bit unbelievable at her age, but yes, absolutely, I'd take her over Ahsoka any day. Unless we're talking about AHSOKA Sabine, in which case, she's just as bad if not worse than Ahsoka.
I only got 4 episodes into Rebels. I just couldn't. Im currently reading the Jedi Academy and X-Wing series from the Expanded Universe, and it it's such a breath of fresh air. In Dark Apprenticeship, Anderson spent a whole chapter just explaining Mon Calamari. It was so, so nice actually getting to see the Star Wars galaxy expand and grow and just feel lived in. Though it makes me sad to see what we lost. Btw, I'm glad you started this series! I love you two's breakdowns of Filoni's "wonderful" writing. For your sanity, I'd love your takes on actually good shows like you do with this show, like Avatar or Cowboy Bebop.
61 yr old here. Rebels critics, in my mind, are too quick to dismiss the efficiency of the show's writing. Each episode is only 22 mins long, yet the writers were excellent in sealing in depth and impact on such a compressed time limit. I have rewatched this series 3-4 times and never grow tired of it. Conversely, I have yet to get past S2 of TCW: I will never unsee it merely as an attempted rescue device for the Prequel Trilogy.
The sad thing is that TCW really just amplified the issues with the prequels rather than "fixing" them as so many claim. Looking back, the general tendency in the fandom to bash Rebels and act like TCW is the best thing ever is really baffling. Rebels certainly has its issues, but so far I'd say it definitely surpasses TCW in terms of quality.

My opinion on Rebels: For me it‘s probably the peak of the Filoniverse. Not great, overall I was entertained. But I really got the impression, that they hired better writer compared to TCW. (And then I really don‘t mind the lower budget regarding the animation.)
Agreed 👍 I've heard Greg Weisman writes some great dialogue. And Simon Kinberg seems to have some good productions under his belt. Plus, the impression I've gotten is that Filoni wasn't at the helm here the way he was with TCW. He was just part of the production team, so he was probably being reigned in a lot more. And yeah, I actually prefer Rebels' animation style to TCW's, tbh. I know everyone loves to rag on it and the thin lightsabers and everything, but it looks a lot better to me.
@ As far as I know, Filoni got more and more control by the end of season 2. (Which explains, why Rebels continued mutliple Clone Wars-storylines with the follow up-seasons.) Regarding the arstyle: I prefer the Rebels-Artstyle as well. Overall I would say, Rebels achieved more with its smaller budget than TCW with almost absurd big one regarding visuals in comparison.
It makes no sense that Imperial Star Destroyers are patrolling a planet like Lothal, especially given that it's just a farming/factory world in the middle of nowhere. Star Destroyers tend to patrol more densely-populated areas while light cruisers, old Clone Wars ships, and frigates patrol the outer regions. An ISD showing up means that you've got the Emperor's attention, and he isn't happy. Of course, later they justify this by saying that there's a Jedi Temple on Lothal that the Emperor wants to explore, but that was only hinted at in Season 2.
Good point 🤔👍 With the whole "children of the force" speech at the beginning, I guess the implication *is* that Palpatine has taken notice of the Lothal rebels, specifically Kanan? But yeah, if they just hand wave it with the idea that Palps only wanted to get his hands on that Jedi Temple, then I guess not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Partially correct. Star Destroyers are also used as terror weapons, being designed to subjugate an average planetary government on their own. If, like in the case of Lothal, a planet displays rebel activity, a Star Destroyer is deployed to nip that activity in the bud before it becomes the basis of an open resistance movement.
@imyouralibi6208 She is a Lothal native and iirc it was related to her family's mining business being outsourced by the Empire; so the more the Empire produced on Lothal the more her family made. She was also the one iirc who lobbied out the TIE Advanced v1 to be produced on Lothal. But it's in the Thrawn books/comics.
While I understand your criticism of Hera's mentality, I do have to defend her in the sense that if you consider who her family is, it is only natural that she was brought up in that same mentality: that you always have to fight for those who can't or be part of something greater else you're going to be crushed under heel. So she's not saying that Ezra's life is worthless per se if he only looks out for himself, she's saying that being a person who puts the self first and doesn't consider others, will not get considered by others either. And those others include people like the Empire or the Hutt Clan or other malignant forces as well as the ordinary people. Case in point: if you never loan your lawnmower to your neighbour, they'll never loan you theirs either if something does happen to yours.
In retrospect, I did consider Hera's upbringing, and agree that it would definitely have an impact on her mentality. Though it doesn't make much sense to me to claim she wasn't saying Ezra's life is worthless if he only looks out for himself, since that's *literally* what she said. If the creators meant to send a different message through what she said, then they should've worded it differently.
