I've had a difficult end to the day with people behaving impulsively, and we're dealing with a Federal government in Australia which this week wants to rush through a horrible bill that grants anyone of faith to say horrible things about anyone who isn't religious or is lgbtqi+ and fire them from their workplace. Definitely suggest telling the original myth of Medusa when talking about her and not just Ovids. Athena gets a lot of hate for something she never actually did. I understand its the most known, but its propaganda written by someone who hated the gods nonetheless. And the story of her being blessed, although beautiful, is still based from Ovids. Athena had nothing to do with her being a gorgon in any way, she was born that way.
I do talk about the earlier Greek myths by way of classical and archaic Greek vase paintings as well as mentioning Hesiod (it’s literally a few lines in his “Theogony” that tells us next to nothing). I even go into etymology and talk about Medusa as having originally been an apotropaic guardian figure who adorned Greek temples. The whole point of this particular video is to show different interpretations of the myth over time. Even the Greek myths have wild variations of how she is described (“dreadful” by Homer, “fair-cheeked” by Pindar). At any rate, there will be more Medusa videos in the future. And we don’t know whether or not Ovid’s account was based on an earlier Greek story that was lost. There are wildly differing accounts of the stories just in the Greek world too. Look at how Euripides often sides with the humans in his tragedies. Not all Greek poets loved the gods. Some openly challenged them. There are many instances of the gods acting petty and cruel in Greek literature too. We’re talking about a span of thousands of years. There is no such thing as “canon” when it comes to mythology. Ovid was very ironic, and likely an atheist. He didn’t hate the gods in a personal kind of way, but rather hated that humans relied on them. Like him or not, he’s considered one of the great poets from the ancient world and I find it interesting to confront how his work has impacted our modern way of understanding the old stories.

Definitely sounds like a male’s perspective. I personally see Medusa’s story very differently, but I have to say I haven't heard it interpreted quite like that before. Makes sense for Ovid's time too, I think.
Medusa has been coming forward to me, so thank you gor the video. I have always felt her story was mistold and your focus on his story overriding her story aligns with my understanding. A story even retold recently, modernly in a teenage book and film to keep the story's perception tainted. I find the meaning of Medusa's and Perseus' name interesting. The Gorgons are of interest. I heard recently a woman who connected with them and their protective nature.

Yes! It has been too long I know. Got sick with Covid and lots of paid projects started piling on top of me 😅 Was a tough winter for me in some ways. There is always a story to say, either bad or good but at least Medusa have a story and one of the most important characters in greek mythology. Greek mythology cannot be completed without Medusa.

A few things always confused me about Medusa. She's one of three sisters born to the sea deities Ceto and Phorcys, but she's considered mortal? If she is a goddess, as her linage suggests, why would she also be a priestess to another god?
That’s a good question that does not have an easy answer. I wondered that too, but Hesiod just says that her “woeful fate” was to inevitably die because of her mortality. It’s what really sets her apart from her “undying” sisters. And of course more details continued to be added by poets over time. Doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense logically but creates a good setup for a dramatic plot line. The priestess imagery is a much later addition it seems. Ovid didn’t state this, but it is an often told aspect of her story, again likely added on for dramatic effect and to further humanize Medusa.

Two things that I thought were kind of funny regarding Hollywood and Sculptures i'd like to bring up, One: in Clash of the Titans, Perseus raises Medusa's head to defeat the Kraken; did Perseus not consider Andromeda and everyone else in that moment would look the same direction? The dudes gotta be careful where he waves that thing LoL. Also, along the same line, if her severed head still had the power to petrify then is that exactly what this Perseus statue (10:49) suggests happened as a sort of humor? _He is looking directly at Medusa's head_ 😳😅
I read that is how Perseus died: he had grown old in the midst of battle, raised Medusa's head, yet when it didn't seem to work, he looked at it... and either died or turned to stone.
Thank you for the information. Ive always thought medusas story has always been a very sad one. I woman who was punished and made to suffer because of her beauty and possibly a common mistake she has made. Not much different from modern times on our social networks. Truly an ironic story from myths and modern times. Now mostly know as a fasion statement on Versace logo. I hope one day they expand on her story and make an amazing movie. Not just a story of a monster.😪
Edit: I thought you were talking about the ancient Greek concept of Fate 😆 Guess there is a show called Fate I am unaware of… That's an interesting point because in the oldest account we have of Medusa from Theogony, Hesiod points out that she "suffered a woeful FATE". He places special emphasis on this, and that she was always fated to die in a tragic way whereas her sisters were destined to live forever.
Agreed. But the gods themselves are neutral vessels who appear differently to us depending on which poet tells the story. Ovid was very skeptical and openly critical about the idea of the gods. He wanted to show us that is wasn’t the gods who were corrupt, but rather the mortals who project them into being. For me the deeper significance of Medusa’s story is how poorly women were treated by men, historically and still today. And how women too can be complicit. Her story also seems to make reference to a real and traumatic transference of power that occurred over the centuries, from the older matrilineal societies (Earth-based) to the newer patriarchal structure (Sky-based).
The version you are saying is the reimagined romanticized Roman version of Medusa. Her transformation by Minerva. In the original Hellenic story of Medusa she is born a Gorgon.

Quit interesting vedio. She is the ones of my favorite characters in Greek mythology. But I have one question is that Athena give punishment or curse to Medusa fine. Then why Athena not give punishment to Poseidon ? He also deserve ....
I think because Poseidon is a god equal in power to Athena, so she can’t really punish him with a curse. They are often at odds with one another though in Greek mythology, and I think this story is open to different interpretations than just “Athena punished Medusa”. I hope this video already demonstrated that to some degree 😊 But in some interpretations there was jealousy at play because Medusa was said to be stunningly beautiful and we know how well the Judgement of Paris turned out when Athena got jealous over the whole golden apple scandal… 😉

I think you are referring to the 2nd-century BC novelist Dionysios Skytobrachion, who puts her somewhere in Libya, where Herodotus had said the Berbers originated her myth as part of their religion.
But the thing is, she is a character from mythology! So different poets had different ideas. She isn’t a real person. She is part of a tradition that changed and evolved over thousands of years. There is no such thing as “canon” in Greek mythology.

Some of the most powerful people in antiquity were women (the Spartans and the Vestals being only two examples). And lets not forget that story teller was a traditional role of women. Media has always been a mixed bag. In the early days she was a protector whose face seems to have been derived from bloated corpses. She was one of the Gorgon Sisters but the only one who was mortal. The later Roman posts, I think, made her a very sympathetic character. After all, as the Christian apologists pointed out, where you have many gods they necessarily limit each other's power. Athena couldn't take revenge on Poseidon directly. The best she could do is take away his object of desire, much as Hera is known to have done with Zeus. And in some versions of the story Poseidon comes off looking pretty bad. If you are interested in an alternate reality and compelling treatment of Medusa, look at her in the Atlantis series.
The single represention of a woman I could find in this list of 85 Greek writers is Sappho. _One_ out of 85 writers. Also, I never mention anywhere that there weren’t extraordinary women in the ancient Greek world, but it’s interesting how you tried to turn that around. There have been and always will be extraordinary women throughout all the ages. I included Nikita Gill’s retelling because the other accounts of Medusa I referenced were indeed written by men and it was important to me to provide balance by including a woman’s perspective. Women are scarcely seen or heard from in ancient literature except through the prism of the male perspective. And yes, men can write wonderful stories about women, to be sure, but they are not stories written _by_ women. And that is precisely my point. As far as your use of the word diatribe, well, I was simply giving a reading of someone’s art. That is the writer’s point of view coming from a place of empathy for Medusa from a woman’s perspective. Call it whatever you like.

The whole point of this particular video is to show different interpretations of the myth over time. Even the Greek myths have wild variations of how she is described (“dreadful” by Homer, “fair-cheeked” by Pindar).
At any rate, there will be more Medusa videos in the future. And we don’t know whether or not Ovid’s account was based on an earlier Greek story that was lost. There are wildly differing accounts of the stories just in the Greek world too. Look at how Euripides often sides with the humans in his tragedies. Not all Greek poets loved the gods. Some openly challenged them. There are many instances of the gods acting petty and cruel in Greek literature too. We’re talking about a span of thousands of years. There is no such thing as “canon” when it comes to mythology.
Ovid was very ironic, and likely an atheist. He didn’t hate the gods in a personal kind of way, but rather hated that humans relied on them. Like him or not, he’s considered one of the great poets from the ancient world and I find it interesting to confront how his work has impacted our modern way of understanding the old stories.

The alpha male Poseidon uses Medusa. Medusa chooses to become a monster. ... Any man who dares to get close will be turned to stone; unable to act as they are torn between their desire to protect the beautiful Medusa and slay the monster she has become. Stone is an apt metaphor as the heart of a man must become stone in order to deal with the pain of loving a monster.
The metaphor of a man that can only act when viewing her image inverted by a reflection, is appropriate. Her direct gaze being a metaphor of her feminine charms.
It is a warning to women that they will turn the man in their life to stone if they become a monster. Don't be the shrew who tries to humiliate her man into action. It will only make his inaction more permanent.
Definitely sounds like a male’s perspective. I personally see Medusa’s story very differently, but I have to say I haven't heard it interpreted quite like that before. Makes sense for Ovid's time too, I think.

Medusa has been coming forward to me, so thank you gor the video. I have always felt her story was mistold and your focus on his story overriding her story aligns with my understanding. A story even retold recently, modernly in a teenage book and film to keep the story's perception tainted. I find the meaning of Medusa's and Perseus' name interesting.
The Gorgons are of interest. I heard recently a woman who connected with them and their protective nature.

Yes! It has been too long I know. Got sick with Covid and lots of paid projects started piling on top of me 😅 Was a tough winter for me in some ways.

There is always a story to say, either bad or good but at least Medusa have a story and one of the most important characters in greek mythology. Greek mythology cannot be completed without Medusa.

A few things always confused me about Medusa. She's one of three sisters born to the sea deities Ceto and Phorcys, but she's considered mortal? If she is a goddess, as her linage suggests, why would she also be a priestess to another god?
That’s a good question that does not have an easy answer. I wondered that too, but Hesiod just says that her “woeful fate” was to inevitably die because of her mortality. It’s what really sets her apart from her “undying” sisters. And of course more details continued to be added by poets over time.
Doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense logically but creates a good setup for a dramatic plot line.
The priestess imagery is a much later addition it seems. Ovid didn’t state this, but it is an often told aspect of her story, again likely added on for dramatic effect and to further humanize Medusa.

Two things that I thought were kind of funny regarding Hollywood and Sculptures i'd like to bring up, One: in Clash of the Titans, Perseus raises Medusa's head to defeat the Kraken; did Perseus not consider Andromeda and everyone else in that moment would look the same direction? The dudes gotta be careful where he waves that thing LoL. Also, along the same line, if her severed head still had the power to petrify then is that exactly what this Perseus statue (10:49) suggests happened as a sort of humor? _He is looking directly at Medusa's head_ 😳😅
I read that is how Perseus died: he had grown old in the midst of battle, raised Medusa's head, yet when it didn't seem to work, he looked at it... and either died or turned to stone.

I woman who was punished and made to suffer because of her beauty and possibly a common mistake she has made. Not much different from modern times on our social networks. Truly an ironic story from myths and modern times. Now mostly know as a fasion statement on Versace logo. I hope one day they expand on her story and make an amazing movie. Not just a story of a monster.😪

That's an interesting point because in the oldest account we have of Medusa from Theogony, Hesiod points out that she "suffered a woeful FATE". He places special emphasis on this, and that she was always fated to die in a tragic way whereas her sisters were destined to live forever.

But the gods themselves are neutral vessels who appear differently to us depending on which poet tells the story.
Ovid was very skeptical and openly critical about the idea of the gods. He wanted to show us that is wasn’t the gods who were corrupt, but rather the mortals who project them into being.
For me the deeper significance of Medusa’s story is how poorly women were treated by men, historically and still today. And how women too can be complicit.
Her story also seems to make reference to a real and traumatic transference of power that occurred over the centuries, from the older matrilineal societies (Earth-based) to the newer patriarchal structure (Sky-based).

I think because Poseidon is a god equal in power to Athena, so she can’t really punish him with a curse. They are often at odds with one another though in Greek mythology, and I think this story is open to different interpretations than just “Athena punished Medusa”. I hope this video already demonstrated that to some degree 😊
But in some interpretations there was jealousy at play because Medusa was said to be stunningly beautiful and we know how well the Judgement of Paris turned out when Athena got jealous over the whole golden apple scandal… 😉

Some of the most powerful people in antiquity were women (the Spartans and the Vestals being only two examples). And lets not forget that story teller was a traditional role of women. Media has always been a mixed bag. In the early days she was a protector whose face seems to have been derived from bloated corpses. She was one of the Gorgon Sisters but the only one who was mortal. The later Roman posts, I think, made her a very sympathetic character. After all, as the Christian apologists pointed out, where you have many gods they necessarily limit each other's power. Athena couldn't take revenge on Poseidon directly. The best she could do is take away his object of desire, much as Hera is known to have done with Zeus. And in some versions of the story Poseidon comes off looking pretty bad. If you are interested in an alternate reality and compelling treatment of Medusa, look at her in the Atlantis series.
