I admire this guy because for sure he is a real train lover. And he has an intellectual approach to the train rides and the countries he travelled through.
Just read his great train journey book. Excellent.
Louis Theroux's dad. So easy to see where Louis got his genuine inquisitiveness and easy demeanor from. His mum is English, which explains his (Louis)accent as he was brought up in London.

Not much about Paul suggests an easy demeanour.
Quite the opposite, in fact.
Why does this guy have a British accent though since he's American.
Incredible man and author deeply traveled, nuanced, knowledgeable and intuitive plus deeply practiced.
I have only read 3 of Paul Theroux's travel books so far and I have never before learned so much, been entertained so much or understood so much about the people and cities, towns , villages and out of the way unique places that Paul visits.
Whet I enjoy most I think is that his writing is not focused about himself, but is more about the people, places, feelings, history, politics, nuances and grass roots journeying. I will endeavour to to keep reading his books until he stops writing. Of the places I have visited in China, Europe, USA etc his writing adds to and completes the little I do know. Keep writing Paul.
I'm amazed how 1990s TV now looks like the 1970s. It definitely didn't seem like that at the time.

Theroux must have wondered how this interviewer ever developed his credibility.
Charlie Rose interviewed a lot of authors in the 90s and often engaged well in conversation with them, so I wouldn’t be so tough on him

Here's part of an article from The Guardian dated 11/11/1995: "Paul Theroux, the travel writer famous for his bad-tempered books about the world, points at his socks: nice, green, ribbed ones. "The last time I was interviewed over here, I had this dorky little guy - a real geek - asking me why I wasn't wearing any socks. I had just arrived from America where it had been warm. I think he was trying to do to me what he imagines I do to others, which is to point out their shortcomings in order to needle them." "... it is his ill-humour that people remember. His travel books are hugely popular but none of his readers would sensibly want to share a journey with him. Not that he is asking." It goes on quite a bit longer in a similar vein.
He sounds half American half English, his accent

It's not a novel, FYI. And boy is this guy spot-on with his insights.
As a speaker, this glorified tourist is a great writer.

Very true. Anyway, Colin Thubron's "Behind the Wall" is a much better 1980's travel narrative on China compared to Theroux's "Riding the Iron Rooster."
Fake British accent. This guy was born and raised in Boston.
The Old Patagonian Express got me here - just wanted to confirm that his obnoxious tone in the book is reflected in the way this man speaks. Probably one of the most affirmed arrogant and full of himself writer of a generation, Paul Theroux clearly makes comparisons with himself and other people and blatantly points out just how much more interesting, well educated and better he is.
I can well imagine that in the posh circles Theroux go to there's hoards of fake intellectuals that surely are way less knowledgeable than him, but he's in no position of generalising that attitude like he does in this clip. I'm no psychologist myself but by the sound of it he's got an enormous superiority complex that he feeds by comparing himself with people from less privileged backgrounds.
Gotta learn and practise humility, my dear Theroux!
... An advice for whoever reads this comment, please read Tiziano Terzani works, and get a real grasp of a respectful travel journalist.

@@paulschnyder938 I think that's true. I don't think you can live a life like Theroux - the extended difficult travelling and prolific writing - without supreme self confidence and also optimism. Its a risky life choice, you are likely to either achieve nothing or flee back to a safe 9-to-5 life.
Superiority complex? You should read VS Naipaul in his travels in India and Islamic countries... Takes courage to look at ugly truth in the eye.
What a terrible interview.
Rose's specialty. Underrated as a terrible interviewer. Curiously it was other issues that finally sounded the death knoll.
