As a student of literature and linguistics it is amazing to see how much the language from Ancient Greek evolved into what's spoken today. Also how some of the pronunciations have changed over the centuries.
the pronuciations havent changed. They just teach you the wrong pronunciation. If you pay attention, you will notice that they will pronounce the greek words exactly how an american would reading the words. It is not a coincidence. I am greek and was born in greece, i had ancient greek as a subject and the pronunciation is the same as new greek. Then I moved to the netherlands and had ancient greek there, pronunciation was as if a dutch person is trying to pronounce it. Then online i see the english people pronouncing ancient greek words and its also different. So clearly, every country just pronounces the ancient greek words in their own way and they are all false except the greek one. The most probable thing is that its very similar but most probably the same pronunciation as new greek. Even ancient greek songs passed down the generations have the same pronunciation. I mean seriously its as if for example spanish is the new spanish, and a word in new spanish would be caliente, with the correct spanish pronounciation. and then someone would come along and say in ancient spanish caliente was pronounced as kahlee-entay. And what do we see? Its exactly the way an american would pronounce it. This is the exact same thing with foreign countries teaching people ancient greek where they teach a completely wrong pronounciation. Its low key annoying, especially when i was studying it in the netherlands.
Just wait a year or so and you'll recognize almost every one of them. Besides, you can try learning more maths and this will quicken the process lol. God bless the epsilon-delta definitions.
It's not the same language. The one you're referring to is Ancient Greek, this one is Modern Greek. A Modern Greek would not be able to understand Ancient Greek without studying it first. It's like Latin and Italian, the only difference being that Greek hasn't changed its name.
@@Etherealwhitness no, as a greek i can understand some stuff in ancient greek. latin and italian are a lot more distant than modern and ancient greek. there plenty of words that have remained basically the same. they aren’t completely different languages.

@@sillybap8292 Perfect example: last Friday I was at my physics lab and one of the problems was dealing with angular frequency (denoted by ɸ, or "phi"). Well, my lab group and I were being assisted by the teacher assistant. Here's what happened: TA was explaining phi, and my lab partner (who was so confident about knowing some Greek letters), said, oh yeah that's "PHI" (the "f" sound with "ie" from "pie".). The TA then said "or if you're GREEK, PHI" (the "f" sound with "ee" from "tree".) This was a wonderful moment where I got second hand embarrassment.
