  • I want to share some of my stories of what it is like to go on holiday in Cape Town at the moment. The drought is a serious issue that affects each and everyone of the people in the West Cape, especially the people that lives in and around the city of Cape Town.
    As you might notice, the audio gets pretty bad at times, I tried my very best to salvage what I can of all the videos I recorded. But the wind in all the locations made it quite difficult at times.
    Update on the situation:
    • Cape Town Drought Upda...
    Should you still Visit Cape Town during this time? :

    Shouldn't only use that bucket in between turning the shower on and off, catch all that water! Use it to flush the toilet. No potable water should be used for toilets. Embrace the cold water that first arrives from the shower head, it is your liquid privilege to have running water in your home!

    Whaat?!! I didn't know it was that bad! It's soo sad to see that people get excited about the rain, while I complain about raining in Norway all the time!! That was an amazing video! You said so many facts that I didn't know about and could never think of! I'm definitely adding this video to my public playlist!!

    Problem solved Cold Steam the efficient way to use the sun geothermal composting rocket stoves any heat source to produce electricity and or distilled water explained from basic concept to employment. Water boils in a vacuum at 75 F or 24 C
    Two open containers one full of water the other empty connect them at the bottom and water will reach an equilibrium 50 50. If one is sealed except for the connection the other will remain empty because of the vacuum created in the sealed container.
    Gravity will overcome this vacuum if the containers are taller than 34 feet.
    If the tanks are 40 feet tall the tanks will reach an equilibrium of water levels at 34 feet leaving six feet of hard vacuum in the sealed tank. This makes a vacuum pump set we need two of them if we were going to distill water as the cold side open tank is used to collect the distilled water from it as the continuous input of water needs to go somewhere.
    Each sealed tank has four valves three at the top two of those on opposite sides (B&C) one at the very top (D) one at the bottom on the side (A), water-based vacuum pump operations are, Close bottom tank valve A and top tank valve C. Open top tank valve D. Fill sealed tank through top side valve B. Close valve B and D when full. Open bottom valve A.
    This primes the system to let the warm water in that will vaporize and run through the system when you partially reopen valve B (to control flow rate) and open valve C to its fullest.
    For only power generation need one pump set and one vacuum tank so we can have a Hot side and a Cold side one to boil the water and one to have the low pressure/vacuum to draw the steam in through the turbine then the cooling coils then to the tank.
    At the bottom of the cold side, tank is a return pipe with the one way valve to the heat source the one-way valve prevents expansion back to the cold side and as the hot side vacuum chamber is the only outlet for the expanding water and it is drawn by the vacuum the cycle proceeds.
    You can combine the two and get power generation and distilled water keeping the return line from the power generation system will let you switch if you don't need distilled water on a continuous basis in large quantities.
    I am going to make one feel free to make one as well it is open source.

    wow. you are probably the most positive person i have ever met in my life. Are you like that in your everyday life too? what a bright example. If more people were like you, i think we would all live in a better world. I have lived and worked in Cape Town for 3 years, back in the good load sheddings years. Cape Town has a special place in my heart and it hurts to hear these bad news. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected. I will subscribe to your channel and i can't wait to watch your "things to do in Cape Town" video. Take care and keep up the great work.

      Honestly one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me! Thank you so much, your words do mean a lot! Aw and yes since the load sheddings, it seems Cape Town just cant't get a break anymore! Here is to hope that it will get better soon!
      Ps, I hope you don't mind waiting a little bit for that video? There has been such an increasing demand for update videos about the crisis at the moment that I put my "things to do in Cape Town" video on hold for a bit.
      But thank you for your comment, and for joining the fam. I really appreciate it! :)

    Hey bud, I saw your video right before I went to Cape Town Feb 2018. Now, my home city is going through our version of your water crisis and Manila doesnt have the resolve/ community initiative to solve the problem and be part of the solution. Cape Town did very well in getting the word out and the locals were awesome in the the implementation - car rentals stopped washing their cars, malls only used one faucet, people showered on buckets etc. How I wish we cared as much.

    Hey man, please forward this to Cape Town’s government somehow: I have an idea for a water source that will be slightly expensive and power-heavy, but will provide a very reliable source of water. The idea is, you pump in ocean water, where it is then pumped to an evaporation chamber. The chamber gets heated until the water evaporated, going through ducts until it gets to another small reservoir where it condensates. The leftover salt in the previous chamber could be sold as a useful byproduct. Next, it goes through the usual sterilization and purification machinery. Rather simple actually but feel free to point out any flaws
    EDIT: Nvm, I see a lot of people have considered this already

  • @roachtoasties
    @roachtoasties 6 лет назад +1

    I hope things get better, but from what I just read the limit might be going down to less than 50 liters per person per day. People visiting in a hotel might not care. Not good. Catalina Island (off the coast of Southern California) uses salt water for flushing plus does have a desalination plant. Running salt water through a toilet requires more maintenance, but you got to do what you got to do.

    • @TravelVentures
      @TravelVentures  6 лет назад +1

      roachtoasties fortunately I don’t think this is accurate.. they will keep the 50l per day margin until the day the taps are switched off. Only then will they only provide 25l of water per person at POD’s .. but some good news, they were able to bring water usage down, and they received 20 days worth of water from private farm dams, so now the predicted date of Day Zero has been moved to 4 June!
      By then the rain will hopefully come (Cape Town’s rain season starts in our winters) and some aquifers and desalination plants will be up and running.
      At the moment, things look kinda optimistic ☺️

      Good point Genie, but it was done already and is one of the sad stories to tell in this whole saga. Our leftist government is pro Palestine, so anything Israel offers is rejected. I know personally the people involved in setting up the meeting for the desalination plants with the Israelis before the crisis is where it is now and embarrassingly our representatives and politicians never showed up for the meeting. The Israelis would have sorted this out ages ago. Don't be fooled by the climate change and drought only story, this problem has been long in the making due to a marxist incompetent government.

    Are the locals hoping the tourists stop coming? More tourists = more water demand and usage. Tourists contribute to the problem, but on the flip side I read that tourism contributes to somewhere around r402bn (35 billion usd) per year. Loss of tourists = loss of jobs for locals. My husband and I were planning a trip in September 2018, but I'm not sure if we should still come. Don't know what to do..

    • @TravelVentures
      @TravelVentures  6 лет назад +1

      Sword good question, they only recently commenced in building desalination plants around Cape Town, and by recently I mean November 2017. Places like the V&A waterfront would most likely be able to provide 30l a day per person in that area alone. But it is highly unlikely that most of them would be built on time. As it looks now, many people will have to queue at certain water points in the weeks to come. As for boreholes, it remains a grey area. It is possible to drill yourself a borehole but since the demand is so high, you can expect to pay around R60 000 ($5000) for one tap in your garden. And if you want to take it a step further by attaching the borehole to your current house pipe system, the prices can go up to R120 000 ($10 000) with certificates and everything. The majority of Capetonians just can’t afford that.

    • @shammydammy2610
      @shammydammy2610 6 лет назад +1

      If you flush salt water, it's another step at the wastewater facility to try to recycle it. You can use gray water to flush your toilet, though.

    • @benjespina
      @benjespina 6 лет назад

      salt water can corrode the pipes though. Might not be a good idea (?)

    • @margietucker1719

      $5000 is the going rate to have a well dug in my area of Texas. That price is to go down 200 ft. Usually water is found before that depth. But if they have to drill deeper--naturally the price will keep going up.

    It's not a drought, it's a Manmade Disaster. Scientists have been warning that this could happen since the 90s, and authorities just didn't give a damn. This water shortage is utterly unnecessary. The whole Cape is surrounded by thesea. And, guess what? The sea water can be desalinated & distributed at very reasonable cost. However, as usual, the government & local rulers can not see the woods for the trees. The so-called water-savings suggested do not really do any saving. This is just another way to punish South Africans by not giving them good service but charging an arm & a leg for non-existent services. Contact me if you need advice on how to supply potable water, etc to the Cape.

    Great video and sorry to hear about the water shortage. What measures are being made by the government to solve the crisis? Or are there solutions to the problem?
    I know first hand about not having water. Living in Sweden on the countryside we have pretty harsh winters, and when I was younger our well froze over when it was -30C, and it didn’t thaw for 6 months. We didn’t have running water for all of that time. The frozen well and pipes thawed in the middle of the summer. :)

    • @TravelVentures
      @TravelVentures  6 лет назад

      This is a great question, our government system is pretty bad with this at the moment, the whole reason being is that the national government of South Africa (incharge of funding)and the provincial government of the West Cape (incharge of managment) are oppositions. And well you can imagine that this could be a problem. Everyone is playing the blame game and nothing really seems to be done on time. With that being said, the west cape government are working on this by building desalination plants and expanding the aquifers we have at the moment, it’s just a little too late. There will most probably be a time where the water will be switch of until these solutions are made available.
      Also whoah! Sweden sounds tough man, no wonder you look like a viking! Haha that is insane over there, I’d be very interested to watch a video if you ever made one about this topic! 😃

    • @TravelVentures
      @TravelVentures  6 лет назад

      I would recommend you still go! Since the government rely heavily on funding (A big chunk of which comes from tourism) to support the West Cape in the drought crisis. If you would also just use water sparingly I don't see a problem at all :). It also depends on where you will stay. The water for the CBD of Cape Town is unlikely to be switched off and places like The V&A waterfront would be able to provide its residents with 50l per day of water from its own desalination plant. Other lodges/resorts may may already have their own boreholes installed into their lodge/resort's pipeline system (Just need to find out about that)

      I understand your concern, It most probably will be chaotic the first day the taps are switched off, as new people will start scrambling to water points that they've never done before. But citizens in Cape Town has been preparing for this day for weeks/ some even months now, as well as the government. I wouldn't be too concern on how some media would like to picture how violent those days are gonna be since that is just pure sensationalism. It would still be safe to keep an eye on the trustworthy news outlets the weeks to come though just to be sure.

    You are not aware of all the facts. If there is a drought, the first people who complain are the farmers. Farmers have hardly made a noise. No failed crops. Actually some farmers have even grown mielies. We know there is very little rain in the W/Cape during the sumer. Surely mielies in summer, when there is a drought would be madness. But it was planted and is watered every day. Why???? Even with water restrictions.
    Many of the private farm dams are almost full of water. TierwatersKloof is very low and the public looks at this dam to confirm the water shortage. But why arent private dams the same? And here is a SHOCKER, we are shown pictures of Tierwaterskloof dam when told to save water but many Captonians don't even know that Cape Town does NOT gets its water from this dam. The infrastructure does not yet exist. (Refer Cape Talk Radio interview with city water engineer.)
    Waterless is not caused by a drought, but rather very bad water management by the city.

    Spend 20-30 sec dousing yourself, cut water, lather up, turn water back on and rinse for ~1:30, ???, profit.

      I am quite an optimist in this regard, as I see it, it will only be bad for a while, since Cape Town is not the type of city that would give up. They will just need to invest in other means of water for example desalinations plants and aquifers.

    Just ran across your video! Thanks for putting this together on RUclips!! I'm a bit angry that Elon Musk, a fellow South African, spent millions of dollars on a space toy to WOW the world!! Why not spend his mega fortune on this water crisis??? Some people are just plain self-centered. If I had 20.9 billion dollars, I would help you all to have clean water every single day!! ♡♡♡♡

      Thanks so much! Oh Elon, I believe he is helping the world in a different way, I guess everyone has their part in all of this 😊
