Interesting note on James Bond: In the early movies and books he ordered what was apparently a gin martini and only later ordered vodka martinis. What's funny is that you shouldn't shake a gin martini because it bruises the flavor of the gin and makes a weak drink because it also causes the ice to chip, this watering down the drink. So, in other words, he orders a weak drink and is snooty about it, lol.
I got a question when somebody asks you for a martini do you serve them gin or vodka from the speed rack automatically or do they always get the more expensive gin or vodka? I am having trouble when to appropriately use the speed rack liquor and the premium liquor.
The amount of dry vermouth varies with the customer. Dry vermouth adds character to the drink but many Americans haven't acquired a taste for it and don't like it.
I found that if you first shake the ice alone, you can bust it up a bit without bruising the gin and you'll also get some little glaciers floating on top of your gin. It doesnt seem to weaken it at all. It sucks that most bartenders are only good at shooting coke into a glass with a shot of Crown... then again I am in Texas.
Thanks for the videos! Had a couple of questions: What size martini glass are you using, and what is a double martini? I thought it meant literally twice the martini, but it wouldn't fit into a normal glass.
What is your oppinion about Russian Standard vodka (Руский Стандарт)?Is vodka Finlandia better>? Im frm Bulgaria (Europe) so id appreciate some advice on good vodka for about 7-15 Euro :) (in BG things are kinda cheaper)
Indeed. So a vodka-gin martini, which shaken as he requested watered down the drink and bruised the flavor of the gin still weakening it. The drink was also made in a deep champagne goblet instead of a classic cocktail/martini glass.
@hasablad69 There are many different stories about where the name martini came from. I do agree that in certain countries in Europe that one has to be careful when ordering a martini because they may get the a glass of Martini and Rossi Vermouth instead of a martini made with gin or vodka. Thanks for you comments.
vermouth should be stirred prior to vodka then strain 50% of dilution away add vodka and more ice and flamed lemon peel then stir both ways for 10 seconds strain over a chilled martini glass and then rim and garnish. that is how you make a classic vodka martini with a twist.
I used a 5 oz. glass. Martini glasses come in many different sizes. To make a double Martini double the measurements and be sure you use a very big glass.
@AK410 Elmanfre was referring to Martini & Rossi vermouth. Also, this is not a "wet" martini. In fact, it's not even a martini. A martini is always made with gin. Period. This is called a kangaroo kicker. In The Savoy Cocktail Book (c. 1930) Harry Craddock describes a dry martini as "1/3 French Vermouth, 2/3 Dry Gin." The current pussification of martinis has led to the inclusion of decreasing amounts of vermouth, because most bars stock bad (or oxidized) vermouth.
Let your nose and your taste be your guide. Vodka is similar to wine or beer in that it depends on what the person that drinks prefers. In recent blind tasting test with professional testers the least expensive vodka was judged to be the best tasting.
Grey Goose sux, try Kettle One. Great flavor, smooth with just the right bite. Pour a little on the rocks you'll see what I mean. Really though gin should be used in a martini!!
Always ask the customer what type of martini they want gin or vodka. You can also ask if they want a premium gin or vodka. Premium are more expensive, and it's advisable to ask.
Nothing is wrong with Smirnoff!! A lot of people just follow the fallacious thinking that more expensive = better quality. Smirnoff is the best "big name" vodka, in my opinion. The fact that it also has a pretty low price tag is the icing on the cake.
It all depends on the customer and how 'dry' they want it. As for a manhattan, I don't know of any manhattan recipes that call for as little vermouth as a martini does.
The title and recipe is to show people how to make a great vodka martini. I have never heard of the recipe a perfect martini using both types of vermouth. There is a perfect Manhattan that uses both, and that's a whiskey based cocktail. I doubt very few people would enjoy a vodka martini that uses both dry and sweet vermouth.
@jtiano Yeah BUT the MARTINI came from the name of the Vermouth, and that would be nothing but MARTINI AND ROSSI's Vermouth. Logic. I know that i wasn't THERE when IT happened but from a former professional service bar bartender from LONDON that's my opinion. I don't make Martinis with anything else. You want to use Gallo? You want Noilly Prat? You're payin' the bill, bud', so your tastes are the ones that count.
My Vodka preference? FINLANDIA! I can only imagine that Grey Goose is over-hyped and therefore over-priced, i.e. VO Canadian Rye vis a vis Canadian Crown Royal (over-hyped ergo over-priced, but better? Not really.) Decent Canadian Vodka - Polar Ice but remember every-body KEEP YOUR VODKA IN THE FREEZER! ALWAYS!
It's not snooty cos there is no right way - everyone has their own preference on how to make it. What makes a great bartender is to be able to make a drink as close to what the customer wants. If they want it shaken, they get it shaken. If they want to mix Henessey Paradis with coke, on the other hand, they deserve to get run over when you chase them out of the bar.
@Dkad If you want it shaken then your stuffing it up... it becomes a different drink then. Oh and at the program... please dear god be more gentle on the ice... stirring a martini is a gentle thing not the thrashing you gave it.

This, so much.
I've got a couple of bottles of Belvedere and it's the best vodka I've ever had. It certainly puts Smirnoff to shame.
the best vodka i tasted so far is "Russian Standard" by far one of the best
Very good steps to make dry martini, thanks you help a lot.
I'm a bartender from borneo, land of the head hunter!!

Thanks for the video! Tried making one myself after watching, absolutely brilliant!!
@jtiano does a shaken vodka martini taste any different than a stirred vodka martini?
One of the best
I"m usually using absolute, citron and malibu vodka but someone says I should try grey goose. I never try it yet , I just wna ask if it is good?
thanks for the video :)

Sounds great!
I agree.
I have to show my friend this recipe. He'll love it.

Every country has it way of doing things. How do you do it?
Good choice, thanks for your comments
what's the difference between shaking and stirring??
Right like so...thanks buddy!
Thanks for the videos! Had a couple of questions: What size martini glass are you using, and what is a double martini? I thought it meant literally twice the martini, but it wouldn't fit into a normal glass.
I like the way he drops the things under the bar 2:25 - 2:28

what if you were to use thunderbird the american classic and vodka
Indeed. So a vodka-gin martini, which shaken as he requested watered down the drink and bruised the flavor of the gin still weakening it. The drink was also made in a deep champagne goblet instead of a classic cocktail/martini glass.
@lazerdemon127 When I visited Russia it did seem that vodka was very popular.
You're right and any good vermouth will do.
Finally my kind of martini....skip the olive just a lemon twist will be fine
Thanks
Bond, James Bond.
isnt there an olive involved?

@jtiano Thanks, Jack! I really like your videos.
Imperia!
Maybe in the next video you can show the proper way to make ICE
Well said.
vermouth should be stirred prior to vodka then strain 50% of dilution away add vodka and more ice and flamed lemon peel then stir both ways for 10 seconds strain over a chilled martini glass and then rim and garnish.

hello Sir.!!! how many cl is that glass?

And if we want it shaken not stirred, how do we do ? =)
Making this tonight!
Can you use try martini instead of vermouth?
I think Pravda vodka is the smoothest vodka there is out there at the moment.
If you like vodka martini, this is a good way to make it.
Thanks for the warning
Never heard of that, but if it works for you go for it.

It's all a matter of personal taste.
right like so
@jtiano unfortunately indonesia prohibits bars.

I prefer to use Belvedere vokda in my cocktails, especially cosmo's as their flavours are naturally macerated.
Thanks for your comments. What does the pollution in Modesto have to do with the Martini?
Nice talk! Are you really sober?
Schmirnof's?
It would be to sweet.
thanks for watching
Thanks for viewing the videos.
gracias!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has vodka only been available in the U.S. since 1950 ? I didn't know that.
@ScandinaviansAreCool If only GOOD ice was that easy.
So, half a shot of Martini and 2 shots of vodka?
i'd like those little onions on mine
ive always thought of it as unisex but it does ome off as slightly manly because of movies like james bond
Smirnoff is bad vodka! I'm say it, man from Russia
Vermouth can come from any country that produces wine.
he looks like jim Carrey`s FIRE MARSHALL BILL hahahahahahahahhahahahahhhahahahahhaahahahahahahahahaha

@zyatkoff

What's wrong with Smirnoff.? In a blind tasting it came up out number 1.
Thanks for your comments. We always want to know what other people who are interested in cocktails think and appreciate your comments.
No but it sounds like you need a drink?
@jtiano Yeah BUT the MARTINI came from the name of the Vermouth, and that would be nothing but MARTINI AND ROSSI's Vermouth. Logic.
