I remember vividly the day of the JFK Assasination. I was 19 years old in my second year of teaching. I had a black and white TV with cable in my classroom because I was participating in a pilot project using Educational Classroom TV. There were two other TVs in classrooms. I had gone out to purchase lunch and I heard the news while driving back to the school. The TV was on when students returned from lunch. Many were absent because parents kept their kids home to watch the news. I was watching live on Sunday morning at home when Oswald was shot.
Neat to see the Flying Horse so prominently displayed and widely used. We had a Flying Horse gas station on the corner of the small CT town where I grew up. There is a bank on that corner now.
Sorry to hear that. I grown without pops, my pop-pop who raised me, died of cancer 20yrs ago. Now I spend every day with my son, to give him something I never experienced with my dad, but thanks to my old man, I am trying to be the best dad in the world. I am thinking about g-dad every day since he passed. RIP
This was one of the best tours of Texas. You and Pops have entertained us on numerous trips. I was 21 and working downtown Dallas and saw JFK’s parade in Dallas the day he was assasinated and the horror of the sounds of police sirens in downtown bouncing off the tall buildings is something you can’t forget. You and dad had what Texans call a Barbecue Pilgrimage and I’m glad you enjoyed our signature dish. Thanks from a native Texan!!
Man, I cried watching this. I just want to express that you did an amazing job representing what we appreciate about this state, and also the joy between you and your father is… damn wholesome and I wish to have that with my son someday. Thank you for sharing
I like how you add a respectful chunk of history into the mix of your videos. If you make it back to central Texas, you might enjoy peeking behind the traditional Cowboy and Mexican cultures, and instead digging into the German History of Texas. In the 1800's, Galveston was a major immigration starting point for German settlers, who spread throughout central Texas, often connecting with traveling groups of German immigrants who had previously settled in North Dakota, traveling up and down the rivers, working as carpenters. The combined groups of immigrants helped each other build their own towns, homes and churches. This resulted in the "Painted Churches" of south Texas -- unassuming, small buildings that were elaborately hand-painted and decorated inside to resemble the stone interiors of their traditional centuries-old church buildings back in Germany. Visit in October and you'll find many local Oktoberfests that aren't just excuses to party. Poke around and you can find a few community whose residents still speak German, and keep a traditional biergarten or two tucked behind local businesses and city buildings. During WWII, a number of towns hosted POW camps of German prisoners, many of whom worked as laborers for local farmers while detained, and ultimately forswore German allegiance so they could remain in Texas and become American citizens. Naturalized Germans remain as a small, hidden subculture in a lot of Texas communities.
@themonkeytrainer Thanks for sharing the info. You made me think of New Braunfels, Texas.. and it seems they DO have alot of German influence. They sure do have a Sophienburg museum, that I think literally shows how the people came across in a hold, squished in together and allowed only one trunk to have their whole family belongings or stuff in. And a newspaper called "Herald- Zeitung". And they have a Schlitterbahn waterpark that is supposed to be one of the best.
In 1963 when President Kennedy was killed, I was in 8th grade. The principal came on the voice cam and told us all to go home. She also said that our President had been shot and that he died. I walked home in a trance. Could not comprehend what had just happened. When I got home, my mother held me as I cried. She was crying too. Will never forget. Never.
We were Air Force brats and stationed in Athens Greece. We heard about it the following day on the radio. I was 7 years old , but knew we were ugly Americans. I was so sad and scared. 😢I was in my 30’s before I saw the original news articles. They closed the base the following year. I ended up going to the JFK HS that had been dedicated the day before he died, in San Antonio.
I live in Texas, and I have to say that I am absolutely staggered! You guys did an amazing job. Thank you for the fair and honest tour of the Great State of Texas. I'm definitely taken a back by you're knowledge and enthusiasm for my home state. I'm amazed at the things that I've already seen and how they've changed as well as the places I haven't seen yet.
This was great. I live in Waco and have been a Texan all my life. it was fun to see you go to places I have been before. Also, I saw a lot of places in downtown Dallas, Houston and San Antonio that I can not wait to visit because of your video. I am healing from cancer treatments and surgeries so even though I do not have the energy to travel right now, I feel like I traveled with you and Pops. Thank you. Excited about your other videos.
I really enjoyed watching this! I am a 5th generation Texan, and have lived in Corpus Christi, Waco, Houston, and now currently reside 45 miles northwest of Waco, 75 miles southwest of DFW! So many of these places I have seen, and there were a lot I didn’t know about! It is always great to see my state through someone else’s eyes.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😄 As a fellow Texan, it's always exciting to discover new things about our incredible state. 🤠 From the bustling streets of Houston to the charming beauty of Waco, there's always something to explore. And you're right, seeing our state through someone else's perspective brings a fresh and exciting view. 🌟 Keep on discovering, my fellow Texan! 🌵🌞

Let's hit the road and discover the world, one RV trip at a time! 🌎🌤🚍
I’m just watching this for the first time. I’m a born & raised Texan but have never been to Dallas (expect for the Greyhound Bus stop on one of my travels). Not only did I enjoy your posted video visit BUT I loved your interaction with your Dad. Your dad is an amusing & amazing person. He really made me laugh when he “herded them cattle”. He’s my kind of people!!!🤗🫶🏻🙌🏼🙏
So many things to say about this video! First of all, GREAT content!! And its so awesome that you are spending this time with your dad, which is very lovely and precious, I love seeing that! Second, I'm a native Texan (born in Bryan, and raised and still reside in Schulenburg), and I LOVE and appreciate content creators like you that are showing everyone all of the amazing things and places to see in my great Lone Star State!! I am definitely saving this video so I can check these locations off from my bucket list, some I have been to (most everything in Corpus Christi, as most of my extended family is from there) but others I had no idea about! So thanks again for this. Lastly, a bit of a personal message here, to anyone who might read my comment and finds themselves feeling similarly - I am 41 and have been divorced for two years now. I have spent enough time grieving over my failed marriage and stuck inside my own head. At some point, the yearning to get out there and start living your life again will hit you like a ton of bricks, and that is where I find myself, and why I've been on a rabbit hole of Texas treasures as of late. I owe it to myself, and so do you, to start enjoying your life again. Here's to you all, here's to life. Cheers! 🍻
I went to all 89 Texas state parks. Started in April 2020 and finished in April 2023. Just finished visiting 48 states and the 51 national parks within them. Drove 90,000 miles in 3 1/2 years.... much of that was the 1000 miles through Texas every time I drove my cargo van back home to Houston. Yep, you drive 1000 miles in Texas and you're STILL in Texas 🙂
😂 it's the worst and best part of these trips, but it gets tiring to think after ten hours I'm still not out of Texas. That's a hell of a travel record you've got. I think I'm gonna take a stab at the state park one
This video almost made me cry. Spending time with your pops is so special. Love this so much 💞 Thank you for visiting Ray’s! The Lopez’ are apart of our huge huge family. We hope y’all loved it! Is it true? Is our Texan hospitality pretty great as outsiders say it is?☺️
What a blessing to have a Father & Son together to do these things. Both my Parents have been gone for many years. My Father almost 12 years & my Mother 4 & a half years now.
Loved your video of Texas i was born and raised in EL Paso and now reside in San Antonio and love to visit Dallas, Austin and Corpus Christi when I have the chance again thanks for the video truly amazing.
Not sure why you pick on your dad so much. He's an absolutely delightful guy and very fun, Actually, he's my favorite part of the journey and his joy of how beautiful things are. Happy for you you get to spend this time with him, I lost my dad in 98. And it's wonderful to see you guys having such a great time. Blessings
I have been watching you and your pops for years now. I love you guys. The relationship is so real and your dads so special and you are very obviously to him ❤ I was inspired and convinced my brother to help me drive my son to visit his grandma in Portland from Los Angeles and bring along our dad whom has Alzheimer’s, fully knowing tommorow he won’t remember the beautiful moments of the trip my son my brother and I will
Excellent, i’ve lived in Texas for 25 years. I travel quite a bit. However, you guys have opened up a few places that I’m interested in seeing thank you excellent video. Most certainly Texas barbecue is some of the best in the world.
I love seeing people enjoy their lives no matter what they do; enjoy eating ice cream, chicken, enjoy visiting people and exploring the beautiful sights and sounds around them especially the great state of Texas. 😊
My family has lived in Dallas since 1910. My mother took my brother, sister, and me to Love Field Airport to see President Kennedy. When he and Mrs. Kennedy came to greet the crowd we were about 10 feet from them. I was on a man's shoulders waving. I was above everyone in the crowd and one of the TV stations captured me in their film. I am in many of the documentaries about November 22, 1963. We were still at Love Field when we found out the President had been shot.
Great trip. Nice season to visit. Wildflowers and not yet HOTTER THAN HELL. Glad you liked Houston's folk art. Come back for the Art Car Parade! And a bunch of fine breweries Our Fine Arts Museum is huge; free on Thursdays. The Menil is a gem of a Museum with many Surrealist works. Ideal for a short visit and always free! Fort Worth is Cowtown but had fine museums before Dallas did. Amon Carter endowed a museum to house his Remingtons. The cillectuon has expanded but the Western paintings are fine Now visit West Texas. Just note in the Summer...
1st Grade Catholic school, the principal knocked on door and pulled teachers in hallway to tell them of the assassination. Remember all the crying. Watched non-stop all the events that transpired through burial. I live in Japan now. From Chicago but spent (2) transfers to Plano and Austin. Miss it so much! Good episode.
I'm from Houston and this has places I've never heard of! People definitely know about the bat bridge, I just think it's underappreciated. If you're there during the right time, watching the hawks wat the bats that are eating the bugs, is cool. I'm watching for San Antonio section. The Houston Zoo is INCREDIBLE if y'all come back! Its ONE of only eight zoos ever to receive a perfect rating from the AZA and they look at EVERY aspect of the zoo from dining, cleanliness, to animal welfare, veterinary staff, etc. What absolutely fractured me was the way your Pops said, "Boudin." I've never heard it pronounced the way its spelled, it was precious. 😂 "Boo-dan" is how people from TX and LA say it. ❤ Also, I knew who Michael Nesmith was and I'm 36. 😂 Other places in Houston to visit: Underground Tunnels Showboat Drive In San Jacinto Monument 24 hour cupcake ATM Galveston Railroad Museum Viola and Agnes' in clear Lake near the Kemah Boardwalk.
As a born and raised Texan I will say excellent overall job on your review of Central Texas. In regard to your review of the various BBQ restaurants, spot on! In regard to your review of hamburgers, you get a 0.005 out of 10!! lol. In & Out is a 6 or 7 at best. WHATABURGER all the way.😊 Pops is a treasure and I would love to welcome you both back anytime in the future. In regard to Kennedy, yes that was a tragic time. His death affected me greatly as he was the first person I had ever seen one day and was dead the next. I saw him as his motorcade passed by while I was on a 3rd grade field trip. The Buckhorn Museum was actually a feature at Lone Star Brewery and was free. It was moved downtown a number of years after the brewery was closed and sold. I basically grew up at that brewery as my father was a district sales manager and later a distributor in Victoria, Tx. I was at the Brewery so often as they had the only Olympic size pool in San Antonio and it was private and for employee & family use. Thanks again for the great job, even with your questionable taste in hamburgers!😂
I had so much fun watching this vlog / traveling through Texas with y'all! Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm from Texas and have visited a few of these locations but I was surprised at how many of these fun places I"ve never heard of.
Seventh-generation Texan here. Born in Dallas, grew up in Houston, went to school in Austin, and now living in San Antonio (with a short 25 year career in Hollywood thrown in somewhere in there). Pops is one cool dude. I got the "Michael Nesmith", "in situ" and other references, since he and I are of similar age. Really enjoy your videos, but the best thing of all is seeing a father and son traveling and experiencing life together. Wish to God I'd been able to do that with my dad, but hope to make up for it somewhat with my son someday while I still can, since he's turning eighteen this year. Anyway, you two have an obvious respect for Texas and understanding of its history, and made the trip interesting for even me...and I really appreciate you both.
I love to look at you Josh and Dad Jake it's great you too are doing these road trips I wish to be able to do this God bless you both for being so loving with each other wonderful father son bonding
All us from el paso used to always getting left out 😢😢😂…. Fun video, Texas is so beautiful no one truly knows how amazing it is until you visit. Love my state
Love this video! As a born and raised Texan you showed off my state with great style! Also learned a few things I didn't know. Especially enjoyed the part about Goliad, my dad was born and raised there.
Thanks a Million " Through My Lens" for your awesome Texas Video here. I lived in Texas for 17 years & I loved it & miss it immensely. I have Relatives still down there living. I hope that one day that I can return to Texas & to liive there again one day.
Cannot believe you left Fort Worth without going to Joe T Garcia's restaurant. It is a legend! I suggest you return just for that!! It's all about the ambiance!
This was the greatest road trip! I’ve always been fascinated with all things Texas! I watch a Texas Horse Auction from Elkhart, Texas every weekend! Wonderful people and State!❤️😀🇺🇸🌏🐎
😍🙌 Yeehaw, this video is absolutely amazing!! 🤠💖 It's clear that Texas is bursting with fascinating history, and I'm totally captivated by it! 🏰⏳ Exploring this incredible state must be an absolute blast! 🗺🌟 Count me in for the next adventure! 🚀🌵
Thanks for the tips, We're flying to Dallas from Germany in 10 days and I took lots of notes from you video. We've got 3 full weeks to cruise Texas in our 1959 Chevy Bel Air.
My mom and dad grew up in Dallas Tx. In 1963 I was seven years old I just remember my mother was crying in front of the black and white tv. Everybody everywhere were very sad. We were living in Southern California. I spent most of my summers in Dallas visiting relatives.
Once again, you guys have me craving BBQ. LOL!! Great video. You guys did a thorough job and as a fellow Californian, I can see that there is more to see in Texas than I originally thought. Thanks!!
That song your father sang and how the sound echoed back kind of gave chill-bumps! This may be hard to understand, but I found it so meaningful in a spiritual sense! hauntingly beautiful. Lots of love guys
We just finished 4 days on a Lake Palestine and had a great time: Tyler Rose Garden, Stanley’s (AWESOME)BBQ in Tyler, the American Freedom Museum in Bullard, lots of historic homes to see, gorgeous piney woods, huge lake with gorgeous sunset… East Texas did not disappoint and from central Texas it was an easy drive. Also saw the new locomotive mural in Hearne at Main & 4th. Hearne is a railroad town for sure!
❤ I loved the Texas Tour. We've been to so many spots you featured but inspired to revisit. We've stayed in Goliad before to paint the scenery, but it looked so romantic through your lense. I must go again. Your Pops is so cool and could not stop watching him eat all that BBQ. THANK YOU for featuring our beautiful Texas.
At 13yo my history teacher brought her TV from home, and had a janitor put up an antenna. The class watched live (8 second delay) the motorcade, they did'n cut away. The whole class burst into tears at the atrocity we had just witnessed.
Came for the video, stayed for the wholesome father son relationship
why do they do that?
It's so wonderful to see a channel where father and son spent time together, wish I had that with my dad
To be fair I spend a lot of time with my family but no way would they ever let me post them on social media they don’t even like me sharing photos lol
Neat to see the Flying Horse so prominently displayed and widely used. We had a Flying Horse gas station on the corner of the small CT town where I grew up. There is a bank on that corner now.
Lost my dad 9 years ago. Looking at you enjoy your time with yours brings me happiness. Love your videos man
I feel the same, his Dad reminds me of my Dad, same sense of humor. We'd be doing the same if he was still alive...
Sorry to hear that. I grown without pops, my pop-pop who raised me, died of cancer 20yrs ago. I felt this one
Pops has a great voice and a wonderful job on the National Anthem!!!
I love Texas❤ I will never leave it.
Oh my goodness, I’m a retired special ed teacher. I just knew Pops had to be an educator due to his good, informative comments. Love your videos!
This was one of the best tours of Texas. You and Pops have entertained us on numerous trips. Got goosebumps when ur dad sang the national anthem! As an immigrant two national anthems mean different things to me.
Texas takes so long to drive across I was tempted to say that "I spent a week driving through Texas one day..."
I'm from Texas and have lived every direction in our State and your video makes me so proud to be Texan ❤
I was also at school and we were all gathered in our auditorium to see the television. I can remember how emotional the teachers were
Man, I cried watching this. I just want to express that you did an amazing job representing what we appreciate about this state, and also the joy between you and your father is… damn wholesome and I wish to have that with my son someday. Thank you for sharing
Really appreciate the comment. So glad the video captured what you love about the state. We really enjoyed our time there!
Pop’s singing was the best part. He was great!

@montanawalsh8155 Wow what at story! That is quite a memory and amazing to have it in a documentary.
Great trip. Nice season to visit. Wildflowers and not yet HOTTER THAN HELL.
Glad you liked Houston's folk art. Come back for the Art Car Parade! And a bunch of fine breweries
Our Fine Arts Museum is huge; free on Thursdays. The Menil is a gem of a Museum with many Surrealist works. Ideal for a short visit and always free!
Fort Worth is Cowtown but had fine museums before Dallas did. Amon Carter endowed a museum to house his Remingtons. The cillectuon has expanded but the Western paintings are fine
Now visit West Texas. Just note in the Summer...
Another fantastic video. I really enjoyed "Pops" singing . Keep up the great work guys🙂
I was stationed in the USAF at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, Texas. Remember it well, I was having lunch. When it was broadcast on TV.
Other places in Houston to visit:
Underground Tunnels
Showboat Drive In
San Jacinto Monument
24 hour cupcake ATM
Galveston Railroad Museum
Viola and Agnes' in clear Lake near the Kemah Boardwalk.
Thanks for stopping there Fort Worth Tx. I appreciate you showing love to Fort Worth. Please come back.
hi father and son trip, you are so amazing, i' ve not been to one of the US states but seeing your video i feel i was there. You' re awesome
Wow, Pops sings well!!! 🥰👍
"It's all downhill, the rest of my life". Gold 🏆
i'm from Texas (Houston) and i wrote down about 7 different things to do that I have never heard of nor done. This is my FAVORITE travel channel.....
I had so much fun watching this vlog / traveling through Texas with y'all! Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm from Texas and have visited a few of these locations but I was surprised at how many of these fun places I"ve never heard of.
Same.
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope it encouraged you to visit a few new spots!
This video is fantastic. I have lived in Texas for 40 yrs. I have added so many things that I must see and do just from watching your videos.
Glad it was helpful! We loved exploring Texas
THE TEXAS STATE RAILROAD in Rusk, TX is also something to check out if you love old trains.

Love this video! As a born and raised Texan you showed off my state with great style! Also learned a few things I didn't know. Especially enjoyed the part about Goliad, my dad was born and raised there.
You are so lucky to have your father around. Not everybody is so lucky! Spend as much time as u can with him so u live with no regrets later

Love you and pops! Great videos.

Thanks for the tips, We're flying to Dallas from Germany in 10 days and I took lots of notes from you video. We've got 3 full weeks to cruise Texas in our 1959 Chevy Bel Air.
Cadillac BBQ OMG! I need to go there!!! Looks so tender!
My mom and dad grew up in Dallas Tx. In 1963 I was seven years old I just remember my mother was crying in front of the black and white tv. Everybody everywhere were very sad. We were living in Southern California. I spent most of my summers in Dallas visiting relatives.
Loved this video!!
Once again, you guys have me craving BBQ. LOL!! Great video. You guys did a thorough job and as a fellow Californian, I can see that there is more to see in Texas than I originally thought. Thanks!!
To see the best of Texas you need a trip to the hill country. All of the rivers and the scenic drive.
La Panaderia has THE BEST pan dulce I've ever had! Every time I'm in San Antonio I have to stop by.
That song your father sang and how the sound echoed back kind of gave chill-bumps! This may be hard to understand, but I found it so meaningful in a spiritual sense! hauntingly beautiful. Lots of love guys
Thanks!
No problem!
I was 7 years old and I remember watching a lot of Kennedy on black-and-white TV.
I'm kinda crushin' on Pops!
thanks for your awesome videos, there is so much to explore and see in the US that we as Americans overlook , thanks again
Nice trip. I could not live without the mountains ⛰️ . Greetings from Colorado.
Buc ees is such a fun place for a nice break in traveling
Another awesome video. I love it when you and pops are on the road! Also Pops can sing but I do love that song!
The most beautiful country in the USA. Yeah the great republic of Texas. Awesome video sir. What a beautiful trip.

Great video, I love Texas for many reasons and I live in Alabama. but truly one of my favorite Sates I have ever visited!
It really is an awesome state!
You both are charming and are sweet to watch. Pops passionate life work is amazing. He seems perfectly suited. ❤
I was in the 4th grade when he was shot. Our teacher, Mrs Adams, came back into the room crying. We were sent home..
