You are like me . I drive a vehicle till it’s no longer feasible to repair. In the meantime I’m saving money for a better vehicle. It’s all in how you take care of your vehicle. Both my truck and car have almost 200 k.
I strive to keep my cars at least 20 years.
I evaluate a repair cost like this: if it needs a $1500 repair, that equals maybe 4 payments on a new or used cheap car. So if I think the car will then last twice that long, or 8 more months at least, then I do the repair and keep the car.
Cars usually rust away in 15-20 years in England but I’m going to try and keep mine for 20 years. When it rots I’ll buy a new chassis etc to keep it going. It is more environmentally friendly to keep things alive than buying new
I got a car that 17 almost 18 no rust except a little spot down by the back driver side door it’s a 4 door car. It can be easily fixed and will be doing that before it spreads the body in good shape couple small dents on the one door a big dent on the driver side quarter panel again can take that off and a body shop might be able to bang it out. Front bumper needs repainting and back bumper clear coat starting to peal. Emergency brake broke and AC stopped working other then that the emergency brake is easy junkyard can help their and the a guy at the shop said AC probably low on charge and a recharge could fix it. Car has 167,000 roughly on it and it’ll hit 200,000 no problem
You're not going to just buy a new chassis now that just doesn't make sense
If you own a well used car here is a tip DO YOUR OWN MECHANIC WORK, BODY WORK, INTERIOR WORK!! Its all on RUclips guys. I haven't used a mechanic in 20 years or so. That back window could be fixed for around 40$ probably. The head liner, I did mine for about 20$. Fabric at walmart is cheap and the can of glue is cheap enough. Shocks also aren't hard to replace and you can buy them for a few hundred bucks. You fix one thing at a time over the course of weeks or months. Thats what I did now my truck runs like a champ. I have done the knock sensors, all the gaskets, sensors, window motors, A/C vaccum, fixed leak and recharge, etc. Basically mechanics get paid alot of money for what they do. Learn how to do it and do it yourself by watching youtube and only pay for the parts. It feels good doing the work yourself. Been doing it all my life. 👍

I had the same exact car and I replaced everything you said, it forced me to learn how to fix the car myself in order to save money. Best decision I've ever made, I have expanded my mechanical knowledge and the car never gave up but I eventually got tired of the outdated features and I upgraded to a 2007 subaru legacy.
It is always less expensive to keep a car maintained and keep it forever than buying a new car and paying interest on your loan
Buy a used audi, its good for you
it's never mathematically viable to replace your car, but there is a value in "this is a pain in the ass" that might justify you replacing.
If you like the car just pay for the maintenance it needs but anything that requires structural fixing time to junk it cause that can rack up a ton of cash same thing with rust damage it can be very expensive and lastly a new engine usually is a deal breaker cause a used one you are banking on it possibly breaking again and you are right back where you started a car you can’t use.
Can someone explain to me this logic please - “if you have to put $2,000 for repairs and the car is already old and is worth less than that then it’s better to get rid of it and buy a new one”. It sounds a bit absurd. What’s the point of avoiding a 2k repairs cost in favor of spending 20k or more for a new car? If the result is the same - you get a vehicle that works.
True, the $2k repair may extend the life of your car, but there is no guarantee of how long that life extension will be, nor prevent another very expensive repair elsewhere in the engine. My point is, some times, putting $2k against the price of a new (or newer) vehicle may be a more wise use of money. It is not predictable, of course. Thank you for your comment!

There is one major reason to buy a newer car: safety.
Newer cars are vastly better if you do have an accident, and they are slightly better at avoiding it, too (especially in terms of managing fatigue).
It’s not all about the cost of repair vs replace.

I had my 2016 toyota camry 100k miles, but had many issues. Used warrenty which covered $3-4k, and $2-3k of my own after power train expired. Car values was around $8k. Therefore, I just bought another used 2020 Toyota Camry instead.
the problem is i made a mistake of buying a ford,
although i bought it brand new, within 5 years everything is already breaking. infact many things started breaking since new, they were covered by warranty but it was a huge inconvenience to me
that about sums up the ford experience. they want you back at the welcome mat drinking free coffee in the showroom 3-5 years. they don't make money with you driving that thing forever. i too after 10-12 fords am done. toyota now
I remember when I bought a 1983 Honda Accord from my dad in 1988. My dad then bought a new Ford Taurus. I told this to a mechanic that same year, and he told me I'd still be driving the Honda when my dad got rid of the Taurus. He was right. The Tauras was always in for repairs, and my dad got rid of it about 10 years later, and I still had his '83 Honda in 1998! Thank you for your comment!
When I was young I had to fix a few things on old cars but then sold them, but looking back I probably fixed all the faults and could have got another few years out of each one. My advice is drive your car to death and get your moneys worth, after all its only to get you around. Now I have a nice car, a 2006 Forester XT ,15 yo but in excellent condition and it will last another 10 years easily. Happy motoring!

I would like to make a suggestion for getting rid of an older car that may be uneconomical to repair - donate it! There are many charities that will pick up your car, make repairs to it, then either make it available to a needy person or family, or sell it to generate funds for the charity. That’s what I plan for my 20 year old Corolla. It still has considerable life left in it, but I’m feeling the urge to move on to something newer. I’d get very little for it by selling it myself and I would rather that money go to help support a worthwhile charity.
Dont let all mechanicals break down on u , every time something happens fix it one time not to wait to fix everything one time plus do mechanical repairs urself cost would just be parts.
Hello! I like your style! We work hard and we shouldnt waste our effort for just new luxury items. I got a new a car. I am the first owner , ford tourneo courier , Its like a minivan. Of course, my answer to the tourneo courier is...keep it as long as you can! At least, as long as the maintenance and repair costs don't get too high. No reason you can't drive it for a good 15 to 20 years. Keep up on oil changes and hopefully, the life of the vehicle will be long! I appreciate your comment! Thanks!

bought my first car not realizing it was a 19-year-old car, now it's 20 years old (newbee mistakes?). Replaced these parts for peace of mind, not because they need urgent replacement (Left CV shaft assembly, timing belt kit with water pump - no record when it was replaced, starter motor, rocker cover gasket, spark plugs, rear brakes, rear tyres that were fishtailing in wet highway) - car still runs great, no engine lights, burned 2.5L oil over 6months/5000km - how long should I keep the car to get the value of replaced parts?
I never owned a car, my dream is that my first car lasts 20 years, that way I will have to buy a new one only when I'm in my 40s
That is a smart strategy. Also, when you are in your 40s, you should have a much higher income, plus savings, from which you will be afford a much nicer car..., even the car of your dreams. Thank you for your comment!
Car I have is 17 years old only 3 years away from 20 years and really theirs not much wrong with the car it’s held up okay other then the little things that ware down

if you have a toyota you need 10 000 bucks to fix it and if your only option for a new car is a new bmw i suggest using the 10000 on repairs cuz over a month bmw will suck up the 10000 bucks and in a year way more
LOL. Are you speaking from experience? If yes, then I'm sorry about that! I don't think I'd ever buy a BMW because of the notorious high maintenance costs associated with it. Thanks for sharing!
@@letsnotbefools5860 kinda from experience im only 16 i dont own a car but my dad owned an mw and said after his first one to never buy one leaks all over and other small shit 10000 is an estimated cost for all the repairs he did there were more repairs that shouldve been made but he sold before he lost more

Have an 05 and 15 Corolla. the 05 still runs good. What should I do? 15 is on payments. If I put both on insurance it adds up . The 05 needs about 1k. 05 is high milage. mostly hwy.
Given the information you provided, I think, since you have 2 cars, it may be wise to retire the 05, both to prevent putting any more money into it, and gain the insurance savings. Thanks for your comment!
@@letsnotbefools5860 Thanks. It's on no insurance..and parked. I would have to sink the Grand into it although runs ok .but needs new injectors and rear struts. I had it as backup. you are right more cash out flow on an asset I won't use is not needed. TY.

After it failed a smog check, and was going to need about $1,000 to do the fixes to "maybe" get it to pass a smog check, I actually ended up turning it in to the State of California for $1000 as part of its "cash for clunkers" program.
