FULL Build: Suburban Gorilla - H1 Hummer Inspired Ultimate Off-Road Tow Rig
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- It started out as an old 1987 Suburban farm truck and has turned into the ultimate off-road tow rig that can go and tow almost anything, anywhere! Ian Johnson and Jessi Combs make plans for the SubUrban Gorilla’s twin turbos. Then, it's a step-by-step how-to on making a custom C-channel frame, custom fuel cells, and transfer cases. They show you how to install not one, but two winches using the SubUrban Gorilla. One of them is a Warn 16.5ti - as in it can pull 16,500 Ibs. with 7/16th-inch aircraft cable, so it has to be mounted right. Then they fab up the front and rear of the SubUrban Gorilla for its fiberglass bodywork, and a to-be-installed 40-gallon steel gas tank. Plus: hard-hitting action from the Gorilla Run hill climb!
Like so many others have said, I can’t help but feel a little pain in my heart whenever I see Jessi in any old videos. She was so full of life and always smiling. I don’t recall ever seeing her without a smile on her face. I’ve followed and watched Jessi ever since she first appeared on Overhaulin as part of the A-Team when she was still a student at WyoTech. It was great to see her grow and mature and to be so successful in a relatively short time. Although her life was cut short she definitely lived a good one and went out doing what she loved. She’ll be remembered always.

Sadly we lost a wonderful woman, but many are happy to know she died doing what she loved and before the world went to crap with Covid and everything else going wrong in the world.
In my opinion Jessi was the best female presenter of all the car and truck shows. You could just see it in her face how much she enjoyed it. I saw this series years ago but it was fun watching her grow in the sport. RIP Jessi Combs.
This is when the show actually built awesome projects instead of pimping sponsors like they do today. Ian and Jessi where in touch with the community. RIP Jessi, you are talented, smart and beautiful person. Great role model for young ladies everywhere.
Jessi Comb.....miss her drive and creativity. A true legend in the making. You will be missed, r.i.p. Jessi......
What I like about Jessi is the fact that she difinitly seems to know what she is doing.
RIP Jessi. 🥺😢 You left this world doing what you loved. Drive on!
Yes May she rest in peace. At least she went doing what she loved. There's no greater way to go.

I miss Jessie.... She was the only reason I was willing to wake up early in the weekends and a teenager..... I will still show my daughter every video/tv show/automotive related special so she knows woman can do this stuff too
Jessi did a whole show with a burst appendix then left to the hospital after wrap. One badass chick R.I.P.
that's less badass and more stupid risks.
Actually, they'd rushed to the hospital mid way through shooting the episode you're referencing, they'd showed the viewers a clip of what happened to Jessi during filming the episode and she'd looked really pale and looked like she'd literally rolled out of bed a few minutes earlier and Ian explained that from that clip they'd had to Rush Jessi to the hospital because her appendix had ruptured
R.I.P jessi you'll be missed she was my first crush as a kid watching the show
1st time seeing the show. I can see why she was your kid crush 😍
RiP 🙏 🙏 😢
Mine too
What happened?
@@twotone85 she died breaking a speed record 😢
@@antartorres7594 i know its so sad.
jessi will be missed forever
I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Tommy with long hair. . . .I enjoyed the whole series very much, thanks for sharing. . . . . (edit) NO WAY!!!! Just read about Jessi's accident. I extend my most sincere condolences to her family, friends and fans. Much love and respect.
Yup when I first started watching these car show when I was a little kid.im 28 now,I used to watch them with my dad.
she was so cute. and so smart. the world was a better place when she was part of it.
I have been in love with Jessi for years...R.I.P. , Sweet Lady..
How did she died 😳
@@ahmedtommy4918
From her Wikipedia page:
Combs died on August 27, 2019 after crashing a jet-powered car while breaking a land speed record as part of the North American Eagle Project on a dry lake bed in the Alvord Desert, Oregon.
@@ahmedtommy4918 in her jet car,,,I believe..
RIP Jessi.. I loved this show because of her, I always thought that it was badass that she actually got in an built stuff.. amazing woman gone far too soon.. but not forgotten
It hurts me and it hurt my late dad that Jessi Combs died when I found out as me and my late dad were eating lunch but I’m always loving the need for speed Godspeed Jessi May u rest in paradise
Watching these shows reminds me that I need to make more money 🥺
Hard to create without the tools and bare materials. Gotta pay for those somehow...
@@richeyrich2203 correct, They say the hummer was to expensive, LOL lets see, 750 man hours equals almost 50k plus all the top notch parts, garage expenses, paper towels, grease ,and other supplies, they might as well bought one of those hummers. would have been cheaper
@@stevenmendez9259, maybe for you and I but everything was free for the show. These shows were nothing more than advertiser showcases.
@@stevenmendez9259, if you listened Ian said 750 man hours between truck and trailer build. Total was 48k dollars in labor, 10k for the suburban gorilla package and I'd venture to say they were still under the 134k dollar price tag of the real Hummer H1 Alpha.
Thanks for posting the full series. I remember watching this every Saturday year and years ago, and I never saw the payoff episode. Damn shame about Jessi.
Awe, was absolutely heartbroken when I heard the news she died. Miss her dearly 😔
Yeah, same here
When Mike Galley and Tommy Boshers delivered the news that Jessi had died, I totally freaked
I met Jessi at a local speed shop, in Orange, CA a few years back, at the height of their TV show's popularity. She sparkled, ... was as kind and humble as can be. I am saddened to think of a world without her in it. God speed, in every sense of the word.
I loved seeing Jessie doing the METAL fabrication and Ian doing the wimpy fiberglass baby cut cutting. Hahaha.
Man, Jessie really was the real deal. She had the brains, skill and the looks, And I'm sure she could probably throw a mean right cross too.
R. I. P. ❤️ Jessie, you are definitely missed.
I grew up watching Jessie and extreme4x4 and they made fall in love with 4x4ing off roading and fabrication
I love it when I find these old videos of Ian and Jesse. I miss Jesse so bad. She was a beautiful person who could well circles around most men 💞
Ian and Jessi were a great team. I remember when they first came on the scene.
Last year, my daughter got upset and told me that girls didn't like the things that she liked...guns, cars, building stuff. Oh, not so little girl! We binged videos of Jessi being the all around badass she was. Shortly after that I heard that Jessi had died. Damned shame. She was a great role model for girls and women.
Please know that you are a fantastic parent.
She'd also filled in for Kari Byron when she'd went on maternity leave from "Mythbusters"
R.I.P. Jessi. There aren't many like you and it's gettin less and less. You truly were one of a kind.
Ow wow, I had no idea that Jessi had passed, but at least she passed doing what she loved. She has been such an automotive icon for many many years. I'm honestly about to shed a tear. She was such a beautiful person and while she deserved to live on for many many years, at least she passed the way that any car guy or gal would've wanted. Rest in peace Jessi. You will always be missed!
R.I.P. Jessi, you'll be missed.
Still makes me sad. :(
Took the words right out of my mouth.... The Ian-Jesse days were yhe best!
That she will. However, as long as copies of this show, and the PN app, as well as this channel do have around, from a certain point of view.
Same with Overhaulin and Mythbusters.
I didn't even know until I saw this comment. The Jessi and Ian days were the best on PN.
I have just realised that Jessi has passed.😢😢
I’ve gotta admit, I was skeptical about killing a ‘Burb to make a “Hummer”, but I kinda love it, it’s just a little tall for my taste. The Hummer is design with such big wheel wells, that it should be lower, imo.
I didn’t realize Jessie was the same girl I read about until I skimmed the comments before commenting how great she is. Rare to find someone on these old muscle shows that’s as good as her. RIP.
Made the mistake of watching Music City Trucks had to come back home to purge my soul. The early days of Power Block were/are still the best RIP Jesse you’re forever missed
WOW it's good to watch Jessi again I miss her so much R. I. P ❤
The thing I loved about Jessi is that she was a true motorhead. She was the first female host that actually knew what she was doing and how to get the job done. Although she was beautiful to look at, she was far more than a pretty face. RIP JESSI.
Is this why you never see any dirt or grease on their clothes or hands?! And and certainly no timelapse shots.
RIP Jessie. Great tuition video and a pretty hard job, but done so well and so informative
Good people are hard to come by and tomorrow is not promised hug the one you love 😢
AS LONG AS HER VIDEO'S ARE BEING WATCHD HER SPIRIT IS KEPT ALIVE BY ALL HER FANS
Yes it will she’s one tough chick being able to perform welding fabricating design work and lending a professional hand!🌹
No one will ever replace Jesse. She was awesome. Such talent wrapped up in a beautiful package. On the flip side, later in the series we see Tommy with long hair.
Damn! I was just gonna say this girl totally rocks then i saw RIP Jesse, what a fkn downer, the good ones always go first! Man what a woman, first time watching this show and i am amazed at her talent and knowledge. Man what a downer, RIP pretty girl.
I miss Jessi. She was a sweet girl with stars on her side (literally). Met her in SD on a 4x4 Outing.
This is my most favorite build from Xtreme 4x4
Thanks man, it was one of my favorites to build
Boy hearing Jessi ask to pull out for penetration still made my heart skip a beat. A great woman gone way too soon. I’m sure she has a smile on her face like always.
I generally don't care much for celebrity. But I genuinely miss Jesse. She was a teenage crush for me and someone I came to truly admire as an adult. She was one of those rare truly good people who just made the world a better place. I know it's cliché but I actually couldn't believe the news when I heard it, she was just too good to go. But that's how it is I guess, the jerks just keep going and the ones that deserve to keep going just get called up early.
R.I.P. Jesse, maybe I'll get to meet ya on the next go around. ❤️
I had no idea Jessie had past. That sucks man rip.thanks for giving me and my dad tv show we liked watching together when I was a kid
Rip jessi my first television crush you will be missed
R.I.P.Jessi :-( . . . . She would still be building bad ass rigs with Ian to this day if she had decided not to break women's land speed record by going 522 mph before her fatal crash...:( speed record does not replace this awesome woman who has contributed to automotive, racer, muscle car and 4x4 world. Jessi was a role model for women and girls who wanted to fabricate and build awesome rides!!!
Glad they put the whole build together ... what an awesome conversation from Suburban to Urban Gorilla
Damnit Jessi why did you have to chase that speed record! 😓
Watching this brings back so many memories, R.I.P Jessi you are missed everyday.
Holy hell I miss jessi she was one hell of a fabricator met her a few times just all around just an amazing person
I have been paying more attention to the people that I care about and I have grown to see why I like someone ❤
Jessy seems to me as a young child girl playing around her father, but she is really amazing in working..cutting , welding , blasting.. comenting...she is IS😎😎😎 ..
Keep showing us such building and designing...see more..
this is an epic build, i'm happy to be able to watch it all from start to finish. thank you for posting!
That's the most beautiful engine I've ever seen. I love a diesel engine.
Randomly just played on my tube. I am reminded of Jessi and how she was the real deal. Miss seeing what adventure she would be doing next. No gender distinctions. Just a passion, intellect, and true skill set.
This show was the BEST! RIP Jessi

Man that shift is brutal 😂
Crazy how he has a fully built motor and he’s at 1000 ft lbs of torque but new diesel truck engines from the factory are coming with 1000 ft lbs of torque. Crazy how far technology in diesel engines have come.
Miss the old days
The show is on from all the way back and 06 the good old days when used to watch this Sunday morning on spike network
It's a bummer Jessi is gone.
She was truly a gearhead true and true.
I'm sad she's gone but I'm happy she went out doing what she loved.
Rest in peace Jess ❤️
DVDs? Wow. I just realized how old this episode is.
I don't think I've ever seen as much ads on a video as I've seen on this one hell I think I've watched probably maybe 40 ad so far in less than 30 minutes really amazing RUclips really amazing!
First off, RIP Jessi; you really were a rockstar.
This is an incredible truck build literally almost from scratch.
Couple of questions/observations:
1) The clearance area for the steering column??😳
2) That's a bad location for your air in-take, no? Why not a snorkle?
3) Wow, you can see how much video & computer tech has rapidly advanced sinced 2007; that head unit and video monitors are grossly obsolete now in 2020. In 2020, they would probably mount at least 4 more cameras.
4) I love that it is still old school with duel solid axles.
If this rig is still in use, buy (or make) a trailer with the axles a little further under the belly of the ttailer. Moving them a little closer to hitch will take some of that weight off your steering axle and move it to the towing axle. I can't believe well over half of the gross weight is on the front axle alone. 😳
Джесси! Столько машин прошло через твои руки, что и не передать, надеюсь все они в твоем полном распоряжении сейчас. Не останавливайся на достигнутом, посади в раю всех на колеса. Удачи тебе Джесси!
I live vicariously through you guys, I love this show.
A cross the B pillar bar locks doors closed front & rear. U only install it if not getting right out hassle next 3 to 5 mins. Most accidents happen near home where u drive most. So B-pillar cross is an easy life saver u just drop/slide on if u use it.
OMG amazing ideas... let put some work on it!!
So sad to see this episode again. Jessi was a tremendous mechanic and human being. Forever will be missed.
Amazing what you can accomplish with unlimited resources ... tools, money, space ...
Great build! I remember watching that back in the day! Kinda sad to see Jesse again! This was my favorite show, watched it every Saturday for years!! The show sucks now!
When was it on the air?
MegaWildanimal I believe it was 2003? Not 100% positive, it took several seasons to complete it! I looked it up and it aired 2005-2009! This episode was filmed over the first 3 seasons!
Loved the video want to build one for off road and a daily driver and to tow can you put me in the right direction I want a diesel no gas I have watch you guys on t.v all the time I started to do more work on cars and trucks yhanks to you guys giving the knowledge and information to do the job now I work on a navy base as a heavy mobile machine for the military equipment thank you very much
I would love to have one of those urban-suburban Gorillaz
No hummer kits are available anymore! That’s a bummer!!
Thanks for making the cuts on this. That’s a lot of work.
These guys were ahead of their time
I'm sorry, I just can't watch this right now. I had no idea that Jessi was taken from us so soon. I can't see her as happy as she is. I realize that seeing her with a huge smile is actually a celebration of her life, but I am too devastated to watch this right now. Thank you for posting it though.
This was my favorite build. Would love to see it now!
It was wrecked>
Jeep gladiator
Didnt even know she past. Huge bummer, me an my son would watch this in the wee hours of Saturday morning when its on in western pa. She will be missed
Man remember how everyone was running pro comps during the 2000s
Anyone else feel a punch in the gut every time Jessi says bye at the end of an episode? 😢
R.I.P. Jessi. You were an amazing individual. We miss you.
Man this show brings back good memories. RIP Jesse. I loved watching this show as well as a few other auto or motorcycle shows on the weekends when speedvision on tan TNN network was around, if I remember right speedvision was available on some weekdays with different vehicle, airplane or boat shows too
Holy hell. Tommy and that hair.
Seems like using and modifying a 2500 HD chassis would have made more sense and been magnitudes stronger to start with. The motor mounts are already set for the Dmax and trans and you get the AAM rear axle and a relatively easy to convert to coil over factory IFS. Can't believe we thought these old square body frames were decent in the day. Never had any problems with modifying and abusing them, but they look like model t frames compared to modern HDs.
That is a BEAST, a BEAUTIFUL BEAST 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
RIP Jessie its so sad but then again she died with a smile on her face completing somthing she was fighting so hard for she reached her goal MPH but to bad it had to end the way it did fastest person to reach heaven
RIP Jessi you were a badass if there ever was one may god smile on you kindly.
This was one of my favorite builds
Fasten the battery clamp. Check pyro fuse. Lock unlock the car with the remote
The Allison 1000 transmission has an external filter but it also has an internal filter as well.
I guessed 19,000
I love this build. I 2atched this as i was building another rc car lol. Its more of a rock bouncer/rock racer with IFS and IRS. It was fun to build along with it
What kind of rc?

I love the fact that I learn so many new things from these videos. I learned about parts I never knew about
Most of the parts manufacturers are out of business now, suburban gorilla went bankrupt in the mid 2000s.
Awesome project..the good idea and nice solutions..nice bro and sis!!! Im from malaysia..

I would have primed and painted the frame. Being an off road vehicle. You need all the rust protection, you can get.
Watching this in 2021. It’s crazy to see how different things were roughly 15 years ago. Everyone seemed happier. Now the epa is after anything thats slightly modified or blows a little smoke. I sound old saying this but I miss those days.
