“It’s not what you know; it’s what you can prove” & the hardest thing to prove is intent. Every piece of advice Alonso gave was true; but his intentions was diabolical! That’s what made his character so scary! 💯
The way Alonzo does one horrible thing after another yet continually gaslights Jake and the audience into thinking it’s necessary or “just the way things work” right up to the very end makes him one of the scariest villains in film history.
Denzel playing the role of a villain just shows you how great he is at playing any role. His performance in this was amazing and he even won an Oscar for best actor because of it.
I wrote in my comment that Denzel should have received the Oscar for this role. I wasn't sure, but if he did receive the award, it was very well deserved. Thank you for clearing that up for me @Dillpicks95
I thought Ethan's character was very naive,a simp and too trusting. Another cop tells you to smoke an illegal substance, then you do it ??? STUPID. LOL. Then that cop pulls a gun and puts it to his head ??? We'd be fighting the entire shift !!! LOL. I'd beat him to a-PULP. I did 4 deployments to go fight in Iraq ( I volunteered for all 4 tours )with the Texas Guard ( also did 2 tours back-to-back also ) my first tour was with an infantry unit at Camp TQ in 2005. My soldiers called me-MAD-DOG-behind my back-LOL. There was a very good reason for that. SEMPER-FI
I'm off the opinion that Denzel plays a better villian than hero. He's at his best when he plays characters in the grey area. Like in this movie you want to believe he's good all the way till the end.
Fun fact: The "King Kong" line was actually unscripted. Denzel just threw it in there on his own as a tack on part of his rant and Antoine decided to keep it in.
You battling with morality because it was so hard to accept Denzel as evil was adorable. You were a victim of your own binary thinking. Stay true to your own morals! Your instincts were correct all along…you a good person. I love your videos.
Morality is just a concept that was made by humans. Whether certain moral standards were establish through politics (law), religion teachings, and/or popular opinions, there is no right or wrong answers in a lot of cases. Even if there were right or wrong answers, human beings are not capable of knowing it. Will today's popular moral standard would be the same in 5000 years (assuming that people won't outright become drastically corrupt)? I don't think so. A lot of people are saying what is right or wrong only because they just see what is in front of them.
I still remember I remember the pit I felt in the bottom of my stomach the first time I saw the scene where he looks out the apartment window and sees that Alonzo left him there. That was a visceral feeling.
The moral ambiguity of Denzel's character is what makes it such an amazing performance. When he tells Hoyt you have to attack the problem from the inside, for the briefest moment you get a glimpse of the man he used to be, before the corruption consumed him... which makes it so much worse. This isn't a man who fell, but someone who made one choice after another that led him down the path of self-destruction.
@@Me-cu8wr Alonzo has no morals...and in my opinion he never had them. He tells Hoyt that he was also like him in the beginning(probably means that he wasn't so corrupt then.)...but he says it because it's all part of the plan he has prepared to get the money for the Russians. For me he is undoubtedly a psychopath, who is capable of killing a friend/acquaintance (Roger), and he even enjoys watching him stop breathing. Unlike Alonzo, Hoyt does have values.

My favorite bit of hidden foreshadowing is right at the very beginning during the phone call before they meet. The only thing of value Alfonso asks is if Jake carries a backup firearm… For his own knowledge against him, obviously in hindsight.
Denzels character is based off a real corrupted cop named “Officer Rafael Perez”. On the plates of his car, it has “ORP 967” with his birth year “1967”
15:43 A lot of the people seen in this scene and others were actual residents of this street. Director Antoine Fuqua wanted TRAINING DAY to look as authentic as possible, and he shot on location in some of the most infamous neighborhoods of Los Angeles. He even obtained permission to shoot in the Imperial Courts housing project, the first time L.A. street gangs had allowed a film crew to be brought into that neighborhood. The crew also filmed in Hoover Block and Baldwin Village. Parts of the film were shot on a dead end street called Palmwood Drive, where the Black P. Stones Blood gang members were seen on the rooftops. Cle Shaheed Sloan, aka “Bone” in the film, was the gang technical advisor of TRAINING DAY, and he managed to get on screen real-life gang members from the Rollin' 60 Crips, PJ Watts Crips, and B. P. Stones (a Bloods set). According to Fuqua, the actors and crew ended up receiving a warm welcome from local residents. When he was unable to shoot a scene directly on location, he recreated the locations on sets.

Hi Jen, Denzel's character Alonzo Harris is loosely based on corrupt LAPD officer Rafael Perez. Love your reaction of one of my favorite movies of all time. Always waiting for the next reaction. Thanks Jen.
Really like your reactions. The fact that you were rationalizing Alonzo’s behavior most of the movie is a testament to Denzel’s acting and you being a genuine trusting person 😂. To answer one of your Qs, movie is very loosely based on real events i.e the LAPD rampart scandal. Denzel’s character is based on Rafael Perez who was a crooked LAPD cop.
After seeing this movie a few times, I realize that Alonzo isn't just a dirty cop, he's also an extremely incompetent one. His only skill is that he just happens to have a lot of power.
Antoine Fuqua has a pretty wild filmography, but his work with Denzel is probably his best stuff. Before you watch his debut film The Replacement Killers, you MUST see at least one Chow Yun-Fat/John Woo collab beforehand (preferably The Killer). Antoine borrows a ton from Woo's aesthetics before branching out into his own style.
The snail joke and the Three Kings scenes are my favorite. They both show you the reality of the streets and the acceptable levels of corruption to the higher ups and politicians.

It’s a great one to either watch on your own or as a reaction.

Denzel was a beast in this film, and deserved his Oscar, but Ethan Hawke was also amazing. I felt like you, that I was seeing this dark world through his eyes. It was two incredible actors playing off of each others and making magic. Great reaction, as always.
Denzel is just too good. The fact that he can make the audience feel for what he's saying when it comes to what a cop must do; that there's a gray area. A masterclass performance.
This movie is insanely good. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawk brought their A game to this, that really made this film work. Also like your early 2000 hip hop knowledge Jen 😉😎😅
Wonderful Reaction.. I really enjoyed it! This is based on a true story! The “ Rampart division “ in California were a group of corrupt cops. They actually made a movie on this… starring Woody Harrelson
7:38 it took me a LOOONG time to figure out the snail joke. It's not a joke, it was advice for jake, "No matter where you go, move and speak with a purpose and people will respect you" So then Alonso and Jake go to The Jungle, and Alonso warns Jake "Never come here without me", and then later Alonso sets Jake up to get killed elsewhere. But Jake doesn't die, he survives and then returns to The Jungle. Bone asks him "You got business here?" and Jake is there to get Alonso. Bone lets him pass, because he is not here for any of them, it's "Cop Business", and no one there likes Alonso so they hope Jake is there to buss him up.
If you’re wondering where the line is with undercover cops and using, there’s a movie called Rush that you should check out. Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh examine exactly that question.
In a deleted scene, the Three Wise Men approach Hoyt and ask him where the money is. Hoyt answers that he checked it into evidence at the police station.
Jen, I give you all the credit for taking this on, this was rough. It weirdly reminds me -- hear me out -- of 1917, because it's one man's one long, continuous, harrowing, non-stop journey through danger and terror. This was Washington at his most seductive -- not sexually, but in all the ways he played on Ethan Hawke's self-doubts. You are now ready for L. A. Confidential, which is big, long, complex, but so worth it, packed with great performances. Our moral lesson for the day -- DO GOOD DEEDS, because you never know how the good karma from that may come around to save you. This was awesome, thanks.
@15:13 Training Day is based on Rafael Pérez, an LA narcotics officer on Rampart Division (like the movie) who, among other things was sued by rapper Notorious B.I.G’s family for his alleged involvement in Biggie’s murder. Denzel studied him and even took on his look for the movie.
Other films by director Antoine Fuqua I recommend watching are Tears of the Sun and Shooter. Another Denzel Washington movie I recommend watching is American Gangster. Other films like this I recommend watching are We Own the Night, Street Kings and End of Watch
The DVD commentary for this movie is very interesting. They explain that Alonso is essentially meant to represent temptation, and the Devil in a way. Trying to get Jake down his path, misleading him and dangling rewards

It's not a joke, it was advice for jake, "No matter where you go, move and speak with a purpose and people will respect you"
So then Alonso and Jake go to The Jungle, and Alonso warns Jake "Never come here without me", and then later Alonso sets Jake up to get killed elsewhere.
Denzel is so charismatic that she was making his actions seem like they were “part of the job” the whole film 😂😂😂
If you’re wondering where the line is with undercover cops and using, there’s a movie called Rush that you should check out. Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh examine exactly that question.
'Deep Cover' starring Laurence Fishbourne & Jeff Goldblum is also a good undercover movie.
Boom, you never know, that's the point ...
that was where i knew tuco from breaking bad from, he also said "boooyaaa" 😂
In a deleted scene, the Three Wise Men approach Hoyt and ask him where the money is. Hoyt answers that he checked it into evidence at the police station.
10:08 - "That might come back later..." - WOW! What a prediction! 🙂
Denzel won the Oscar for this film, by far his best performance,
Denzel's other great movie is Man On Fire, you shouldn't miss it.
*_The shit's chess. It ain't checkers!..."_* is one of my favourite movie lines.
I love this movie, Denzel played such a great role as a sinister cop here that he deserved this award.
This woman did a fist pump to still dre 😂😂😂 she is awesome
Other films by director Antoine Fuqua I recommend watching are Tears of the Sun and Shooter. Another Denzel Washington movie I recommend watching is American Gangster. Other films like this I recommend watching are We Own the Night, Street Kings and End of Watch
The DVD commentary for this movie is very interesting. They explain that Alonso is essentially meant to represent temptation, and the Devil in a way. Trying to get Jake down his path, misleading him and dangling rewards
What’s scary is Denzel’s character is loosely based on a real corrupt cop named Rafael Perez
4:56 Did Jen say what I think she said?! You go girl! 🥰
Lol I see you missed my Big Lebowski video
