The scene where Alonzo is on the phone and says ‘make sure the bathtub is clean’ shows he was calling Smiley ahead of time and was fully prepared to murder Jake all because Jake refused to play along with Alonzo’s schemes. Smiley was paid the cash by Alonzo that Jake refused to take from the bust but Jake saving Smiley’s cousin was the only thing that saved him his one good deed saved his life. That is why Smiley said ‘its just business’ and Jake doing a good deed for his cousin was more valuable than the pay from Alonzo’s hit.

Yep jake takes the money and he changes his mind. It was his last chance. Also I read a article & watched a movie review where Alonzo was a improviser through out the whole movie. He uses the menu as a fake warrant. He goes to Roger and ask him if he gonna be home. If not he might have robbed someone else. Getting sand man's money was improvised cause he had to find out who he was from the wheelchair dude. So when alonzo starts to realize jake might be straight & narrow when he asks her who her people are he knows and thinks if I have to kill Jake I can just use them. He didn't count on jake having the wallet. Once I read & watched that review it all made sense cause I always hated the wallet just being a coincidence. It wasn't, Alonzo just put in the back in his mind if I have to kill him I can just use them.

This movie takes many watches. At least two. He had this whole thing planned waaaaay ahead of time. Every piece was planned before he even met Jake with failsafes and backups--but he cannot control fate. Jake's saving of the cousin is the only thing that saved his life.

The movie is a reference to the Rampart Scandal. There was a local LAPD unit called CRASH. CRASH was formed in the 1980s during the Cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles and excessive gang warfare. Some CRASH units were gang associates and/or gang members. The crooked CRASH unit would use the LAPD resources to put terror in the Los Angeles streets such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, unprovoked fights/shootings among rival gang members and their fellow CRASH officers who threatened to report their dirty campaigns.
Alonzo Harris is a reference to Rafael Perez, who was a CRASH Officer and a former U.S Marine. The license plate on Alonzo's Monte Carlo lowrider reads ORP 967. It was supposed to be ORP 1967. 1967 is the year Rafael Perez was born.

I’m actually glad Arianna was uncomfortable watching Training Day. Honestly, you’re supposed to be. It’s raw and unforgiving but with a purpose. Training Day is an excellent movie, but it is certainly one that pushes moral boundaries for reasons it explains within its own narrative as the events unfold.
Fun fact: Denzel’s character is loosely based upon an actual former LAPD Narcotics Officer who fully embraced corruption and completely manipulated the system for his own ends, even going so far as to stage drug busts solely to rob and kill, as seen in the film halfway through.
Fun fact #2: The Director, Antoine Fuqua, wanted as much authenticity as possible, so he coordinated filming in actual gang neighborhoods by interviewing and involving then-current gang members.

26:16 - I’ve never seen/heard Arianna speechless. I’ve been watching her for a couple yrs and this is a first.
This is 1 of Denzel’s many, outstanding roles. MAN ON FIRE is his best movie.
Ari, SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO is better than the first one. Especially, the last 5 minutes.
Ari and Maple r the best of the best.

From what I've heard, Denzel's character was based off of a real cop. Word has it that the real cop might've had something to do with either Biggie or 2Pac's death.

To answer your question…Jake got lucky. Alonzo was tying up his loose end sending him there. Jake was always supposed to end up dead in the plan and he sealed his fate when he wouldn’t take Rogers money.

I don’t know if you knew this or not but this movie is pretty much based on a true story about an LAPD Narcotics Unit in the late 90’s to around 2002. It was all over the news when they all got busted by internal affairs and the corruption went all the way to the top.
