  • The Mig 21, which was known to NATO by the codename "Fishbed", is a supersonic interceptor fighter jet developed by Soviet Russia during the 1950's and 60's. Initially, due to poor placement of the internal fuel tanks, the aircraft only had a flight time of about an hour. But with subsequent upgrades and improvements it became one of the most mass-produced aircraft of its era, with many still being used in active service to the present day.
    Join me in this video, as I build and review a 1969 vintage Frog 1/72 scale plastic model kit of this long lived interceptor.

    Having grown up when Frog models were new this kit is very accurate for the period. Many Soviet/Warsaw Pact jet model kits were sometimes only a shadow of the real thing. Looking at the model it appears to be a F-13 version and there are more current kits available, however if I had one I would not hesitate to build it. Models are meant to be built and displayed so building this was a great idea. It looks good and from what I have read about yellowed decals is as long as they are removed from the backing sheet after being placed in the sun they should maintain their clarity.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 года назад

      Hi John! I completely agree - it might not be the most accurate kit today but it was a fun build! I'm not one of these "collector" kind of modellers, everything in my stash is there with the intention of being built. As for the decals, it's been nearly a year since I applied them to the model and I've just taken a look at it, they have begun to yellow ever-so-slightly at the moment, but nowhere near as bad as they were originally

    I like making older kits - especially those I had 'done' as a kid. I can recall that this kit was, way back when I first bought it, more expensive than the Airfix one but had great decals or 'transfers'. The moulding featured raised Soviet stars and was appreciably bigger than the Airfix kit.
    I've read that the kit is/was moulded from Hasegawa moulds, typical for the time as many other FROG kits are Hasegawa mouldings. But not the great fitting, accurate moulds that only started to be produced sometime in the early 1980s! But this kit bashes together OK.
    Yes, I did enjoy the build and though it isn't the best MiG 21 kit by far it was good to build and finish.

      The kit has been copied by Academy and has been on release for many years. It is appreciably bigger than 1/72 scale, perhaps 1/66 scale. However, it is a very enjoyable kit to build and gives a reasonable impression of the classic Soviet interceptor.

    FROG kits were great. They made really interesting subjects that nobody else did. The Westland Wallace. The Bleriot XI. The Gloster-Whittle E-28/39. The Vultee Vengeance. If you want a Spitfire, they made one; a rare, late mk.XIV with a V1 flying bomb. I've bought one from ebay solely for the 1/72 'Doodlebug'.
    That MiG looks superb.

Also, I would like to add that painting the model the old fashioned way (which I use in all my models) and using the old decals gives the model a beautiful vintage appearance. Congratulations on the results! Great video of a beautiful aircraft model!

    If you want to get a more consistent NMF finish, paint the whole model in white, the the metallic colour. The latter will have a better surface grip and will need less coats to fully cover the model.

    This kit reminds me of the Airfix version. It probably is looking at the tool, I have that version in my stash and I may build it. I built one 12 years ago and I have to say my effort wasn't great, I didn't use liquid poly or thinned paints so it was rather disappointing, plus I didn't use my own judgement or use real photographs for reference.
    I have to say Matt that you may have fired up my wanting to build her. Nice model despite it's age, the yellow decals as we all know just comes with age and storage which dries out the film underneath, one way you can get around this is by putting them in your window in direct sunlight which will bleach the decals back to their original colours which you did and it kind of worked...
    Currently I'm building the old Airfix Saab Draken which has been out of production for 14 years and the box I have is the 2004/2005 release which was the best of the bunch as the decals are like new and the moulding is crisp and it fits together with little sanding required. Using liquid poly it blends everything together and I don't need filler. :)
