I wasn't there for this game, I had to listen on the radio, wow, I was extatic , Peter shirtliff , what a legend a Yorkshire man, a defender who obviously don't get too many goals and he pops up with two in 5 minutes to keep us in it .The stuff of legend .
I Listened on Radio 2 (I taped it, still got it somewhere with Alan Green and Trevor Brooking doing the commentary) . I went to the first leg at Selhurst though, and saw Jim Melrose's 87th minute goal.
I'm only 16 so I don't really remember this system of football, i have been a CAFC fan since i was 6 though, why were they playing off to keep their top flight status? was it like a relegation battle? someone help me out! hahaa
It was a relegation play-off system which is still used in Germany today. 3rd bottom in the 1st division (Charlton) played 3rd top in the second division (Leeds) to see if charlton would stay up or if Leeds will go up.
To clarify, it was a four team playoff. I was only ten at the time, but I watched Charlton beat Ipswich 2-0 at Selhurst Park in the (I think) 2nd leg of the playoff to make the final. It was one team from division one and three teams from division two playing off for that one place in the top division.
Not really a tragic way for it to end for Leeds, they should not have won a semi-final on "away goals" against a team they were a long way behind on points. It's good though they actually bothered with replays and didn't take it to penalties.
One of the many ups and downs supporting Leeds for the last fifty years

I was depressed for weeks after this match, typical Leeds, congrats to CAFC.

2,000 Charlton 16,000 Leeds
if that mate, i't said attendance was 20/21000 and there may of only been between 500 and 1000 charlton . leeds had3/4 of the ground💛💙🤍
Attendance was 15000 so Leeds took max 13k which is an embarrassment let’s be honest
Went to this with my dad i was 8 year's old.
