Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This RUclips channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

How do I share it with myself ?
I play off 12.1 but am terrible in bunkers, i practice a lot but this will help me get to single figures I have no doubt, thanks Rick
Rick, can you do one for bunkers that don't have the soft sand? There quite a lot of courses that have a thin layer of sand and much more packed in sand/dirt underneath. Also, what's the plan with wet sand?
It worked for me and has helped me big time.
Great video... How about Bunkers with the ball in a terrible position, for example: the ball being at the lip of the bunker (front or back), downward slope of the bunker, hard packed sand versus soft sand, and buried shots. Looking to break 80... Thanks again, love the videos and great advice.
I'd love to try this at my local course, avoiding the parts of the bunker where the sand is either welded together or there's about 2mm of it because it hasn't been replaced since WW1.
Same here, they probably used the sand from Dunkirk to fill the bunkers at my course
Wow do you guys play at the Surrey National too?
Dereham Golf Course in Norfolk UK by any chance?
🤣
This type of comment is on every bunker tutorial video on RUclips, so think it applies to most of us 😂
How about some tips on how to deal with different kinds of sand, e.g.'s wet, packed, thin. Around here the sand is anything but good and it is also inconsistent. Some courses cheap out and use beach sand which as we know turns into a version of concrete when wet. Some help there would be appreciated.
Pick up and rake then put it back.
@@Mikesmeyer88 Not allowed by the rules. Got to play the ball as it lies.
@@twm4259 Honestly I think its ridiculous to expect to play as it lies when in a lot of cases, the rules of golf make little sense when you apply them at courses that don't have professional quality grounds-keeping. Why should I damage my club because my ball landed in a bunker that's filled with small pieces of gravel laid over what appears to be tamped down dirt? I think raking and dropping should be allowed on courses of poor quality. A lot of courses that don't water their fairways have a rule that you can move your ball to a patch of grass if it lands on dirt.
@@SilentMott Local rules are allowable but if there is no rule allowing repair of a sand trap before playing your shot AND you intend to post your score for the purpose of handicap then the rules are the rules - as ridiculous as they sometimes are.
I felt thisss. But then i started to play at a course that had a sand mine type of thing in the center of it. Bunkers were dope there
3:50 Greenkeeping staff - "Yayy! here's Rick practising his bunker shots again!" 😑 ...😂
I’ve just read the title and I can already tell I’m going to need this 😂👍
Would you consider a similar video but for “bad” bunkers? Lack of sand, hard sand, wet sand…
Try using a 52 opened up and swing smooth.
Yeah, the sand is always perfect in these videos. Most of the golf courses I play it's compact.😏
Broke 100 for the first time yesterday. Your content has been very helpful thank you.

This video couldn’t have been more perfect I’m on middle school golf team and I have been having trouble with bunkers this works!!!!
Just wanted to say thank you for all the help and coaching! I love the videos and really feel like I’m right there with you as your playing and I’m learning a ton. I’ve practice a few things I’ve learned from watching your videos and have been able to drop my scores recently! Thanks you I’m a big fan and find myself out there on the course now talking like a Brit👊🏾!
Just watched your blog of royal Liverpool with Carter and finch, from the shots you played out of the bunkers there I think this is well worth the watch
Excellent!!! This is probably one of the most under practiced shots, especially amongst us newbies. I am new to the sport and thanks for keeping us engaged.
After watching this I applied the technique today and got out the bunker with ease. Explained the principles to my son who also had the same issues with bunkers. Both improved our game significantly. Big thanks for sharing this.
This came out when I needed it the most. Thanks Rick

Thank you Rick for this excellent explanation and demo. I'll be working with these techniques quite often to keep the "chops" up!
Great advice. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Thanks for the tips! I just had a tournament and I had to hit two out of the bunker a couple times!
Been watching you for a while and love your tips. Just finished up a week long golf trip and using tips I’ve seen before had only one bunker shot that didn’t turn out well. That was a fairway bunker and tried for the green with a 4 iron. Caught the lip. Fortunately the ball had enough momentum I did escape the bunker. All my green side bunker shots were great as I put the ball close enough I one putted. Thanks for the tips.
Another fantastic instructional golf video but the internet's best; Rick Shiels. Loved the video.
Feedback Rick - Can you go through the way the basic bunker swing is different? Less shoulder turn and arm, more wrist etc. That's something I struggle with and is a fundamental part of bunker play that makes it different from iron shots I gather.
You'r videos are the best and very entertaning
I struggle with every part of my game but slowly, using your tips, I AM getting better. Thanks for posting your lessons.
Just watching your previous bunker videos worked like mad for me, something I don't practice but I'm very good at. They always roll within a couple inches of the hole.

Really enjoyed the advanced portion of this.
love the videos rick! i just sent this to a friend i'm about to play with to help him, thanks for everything you do🔥
Thanks Rick. Worked with my 10 years old daughter using your drill and it worked great! She regained her confidence with bunker shots.
Thanks for the videos, mate. I could watch these all day.
I will look at this, extremely interested hoping to learn, since most often I do not make it and lately in principle ending up in a bunker equals ”disaster”.
I love that you follow your 1st shot with "at least now I'm putting" as though the ball didn't just almost fly the green....
Thanks for covering this, I have been wondering where to strike on bunker shots so now I have something to focus on 👍
Brilliant video. Always feared bunkers.
I need this! Leaving for my round soon 😎
Great video thank you so much!
I so needed to watch this YESTERDAY! 😢😢😢. 🤣🤣🤣
Ur making me so much better at golf so fast
That was amazing to watch
Very educational
Love the content. Thanks Rick!
great video rick, thanks
Thanks Rick, I needed that!
Love that!
Nice, very helpful
Great Video. These videos bring me through the Winter. Greetings from germany
Great video rick!
Love your videos
Hey Rick I went from shooting mid-90s to high 70s low 80s in a few months by watching your videos. Thanks brother I owe you big time!
very helpful rick
Once again another great video I NEVER get out of the bunker decently. This will definitely be practiced more thank you!

NEXT VID IDEA-Full bag review
This is almost a year late, but I used these tips and I got out of 2 bunkers yesterday. One had the ball 8 inches above my feet, and I still got out effortlessly. Thanks Rick!
You make it sound so easy Rik 👍🏌♂️👌

This and the putting practice, invaluable. Although not so easy finding a course that has a practice bunker.
nice to have fluffy sand ... most of the time it is packed after a rain ... what to do then?
love the vid :)
Wish I saw this upload before I went golfing today haha I took 3 shots to get out of the bunker on the 18th
Definitely in the "beginner" category lol. Tried your tips today but sand very heavy and wet. Did not go well. Thoughts on wet, heavy sand? Your videos are hugely helpful a great compliment to my instructor at our club.
favorite notification of the day !!!!
love it
Quality video
Every time I’m working away with work (last week Lytham st Ann’s)
Miles of beach when the tide is out
🍻Rick very informative and helpful
Thanks Rick! I’m most terrified on wet brown packed sand with small debris/pebbles after rains!
Another top tutorial Rick 👍

One thing I’ve found is to use my 52(Gap) wedge opened slightly instead of a 56 or 60 and swing more smooth. Helps with compacted sand as well.
You know it’s a great day when you get the notification that Rick posted
Thanks for the vid, Rick! Any idea when we can expect the Garmin R10 review? Cheers.
I'll practice this when I finally get on the course. Just got into golf a month ago and just using your videos practicing at the range 3-4 times per week to get the fundamentals. Don't want to go on the tee and waste everyone's time yet haha.
Thanks for the Callaway Edge club recommendations though! Really nice having a full set to start with!
Get out there and enjoy it. We all started somewhere!
Ditto. Try to get on an easy course once a week if you can. There is a lot to learn out there that you can’t learn on the driving range. You won’t be wasting anyone’s time, I’ve played with people of all ages and abilities.
One question I always have regarding bunker shot: does the club actually touches the ball or just the sand touching the ball?
Great video and advice, could I ask if and how you would change your approach if the sand is wet and or hard / compact?
I recently spent a few hours over a week to work on traps. My course has a couple snd they are very flat snd I normally chip out with my 9. Yesterday I played in a tournament where traps were common on every hole and I was in 6. I had two that were imbedded and above my feet. Glad I practiced. I do like the line drill
Thanks ! Rick I need all the help, I can get !

I watch a video pete did on this, very useful. When's the match!!!!!
Top 10!
This will help me big time! My speed in the swing was too slow.
Great Video. Can you offer some advice .
Early crew!
The biggest thing that helped me was making sure I didn’t quit on the shot.
Speed is so important but I was always scared of thinning it 50 yds past the green.
It took practice to become confident and make sure of a full follow through.
Class
Can you make a video for hitting long irons
Close your eyes and swing as hard as you can.
love when rick uploads, only problem is i cant gage my distance when im hitting out of the bunker.
I always tell my son to splash the sand as far as he wants the ball to go, and he’s usually pretty good with that
@@camaroboi13 I’ll try it out thanks
I hate the beach… haha. But gotta use these technique Rick. Thanks!
My local golf course that I go to the sand is like cement on some holes
Would love to see a video on “bad” bunkers. I play at some well-kept courses. Well the courses are well-kept but the bunkers. They are either packed sand with no give, so it feels like you’re hitting off a cart path, or they are just full of water that’s been there for awhile. I can hit out of the fluffy stuff all day, but those bunkers are few and far between.
Can you do a video on how to hit out of fairway bunkers? Some of bunkers I play out of are either hard as a rock or really soft.
Splashed one within a foot of the hole to save par usually I blade them but I hit two good ones I a row last weekend.

What changes when the sand is soaking wet and its like hitting off the car park?
Again, nice vid, Rick! What does the opening of the clubface do to the swingpath and feet position? Do you take a more open stance? Swing more out to in to get a steeper angle on the downswing? And yes, I bare in mind that any answer here will probably just give me more stuff to blame after hitting a bunker-to-bunker shot....
Yes
One day too late... Needed that for yesterday's round... :)
Rick, most of the comments below are asking for the same thing. Please give us some advice on getting out of thin compacted sand where the bounce is your enemy and not your friend. My current technique is to aim back up the middle of the fairway and play a standard 50 yard chip shot. Basically it's like taking a 1 shot penalty to drop the ball in the fairway 50yards back and try again. Not ideal, but it only costs me 3 shots a round and not 8...
@Rick shiels golf ??? Um... Rick... , why did you send that? Your bot broken???
I set myself up to hit an imaginary ball behind the one that's in the bunker. That gives you just less than the 2" you suggest, and is easy to replicate every time, don't set yourself up to the ball in the bunker, then pull your hands back 2", that's almost a guaranteed thin
Nothing better than holing out from the bunker.
Dear Rick... A sugestion... show these lessons for golf courses poor conditions. Concrete sand Soft banners, hard fairways without grass, no irrigation etc
Rick can you please do fairway bunkers next?

Hi Rick
Love this video , but any chance you can do a guide for hitting out of a fairway bunker ? i normally try to just pick the ball off the top of the sand, close my eyes after i hit and hope !!!
Hello Rick I'm a big fan of your RUclips channel I watch all your videos, I like your videos when you try new club sets I'm wondering if you can try a set from Giga Golf I'd like to see what you think of those golf clubs. Hope to see that video. take care keep up the great work
Can you do a video on wet bunkers? Cus the sand is often really hard when its wet
Good stuff. What about that really soft sand?
I’ve found that at my local course, the best way to get out of the bunker is to directly hit it. They are so rock hard it bounces out!
Good tip yet again Rick, I’ve been useless out of bunkers lately 🍺
