I spent 3 months studying russian at a language school in odessa in 2020. Russian is the primary language of most people in the city. This would be like canada banning the use of French in Montreal. The russian language didn't invade ukraine, the russian army did. Speaking a certain language doesn't make you a bad person and ignoring history doesn't solve today's issues.

Not the same, French is the national language of Canada. And it is Russia tried to band Ukrainian language in THE COUNTRY OF UKRAINE. Russians revolved from Ukraine, they currently want everyone to think the opposite as Russians are the best in the world in their way of thinking. Which is OK in Russia, but to force those around them to their way of thinking is the true definition of NAZI'S. Putin talks as to be looking in a mirror.

It all sounds good in logic until your neighbor takes those Russian speaking people as their citizens. Russian actions follow Germany of world war II. They justify that war by trying to tie together German speaking populations. This is the same thing Russia is doing in Ukraine.

This is a terrible idea, vilification of your own population, stopping people speaking a language at all is an element of fascism. Not defending the invasion in any way at all just to be Crystal clear. But this gives verbal ammunition to Vladimir Putin making one of his points correct. Why would you give him an easy point like that? Erasing history, culture and a language in general is always a terrible idea. True.Due to this, Russia will have to take the whole black sea coast and its Russian population. Odessa was founded by Catherine after Russia took the coast from the Turks. Ukraine is a failed attempt at creating a mono-ethnic state yet the land is very diverse. This has good intent behind it. One concerning thing would be revisionism and pretending something never happened. Also, yes, menus, government documents etc should default to Ukrainian but also (and I almost assume they'd do this) have options for other languages which would include not just English, Spanish, German, Mandarin etc but also Russian.
People tend to not learn languages that well later in life. Not that they can't, but it's not something that happens often. My own mother in law doesn't speak English and she probably never will at her age, despite living in an English speaking country. In the US, English is definitely the standard language but in some areas, there is often a section that is translated into Spanish, especially in southern states. I can feel for the older Ukrainians that are against the invasion but speak only Russian. They'll probably speak it to the grave.
This is something that doesn't change overnight but takes a few generations to change.

Decolonising the country is very important for the future of Ukraine and its people. Before lecturing Ukrainians, foreigners must remember that Ukraine had no problem with the Russian language after gaining independence from the USSR in 1991. The majority of Ukrainians elected Volodymyr Zelensky, who also speaks russian and did TV programmes in russian language. So why are they all changing that now? Because the russian federation abused that trust, placed russian assets in key power positions in Ukraine, used the fact that Ukrainians accepted russian speaking in their country as one of the reasons to invade it, and tortured, raped and murdered Ukrainian-speakers in Ukraine.
Ukraine has tried to be inclusive of russian language for 30 years, but they got invaded because of that. That experiment has clearly failed. Now, it is time to leave russian language and history in the museums. The future of Ukraine is Ukrainian, and what a wonderful language and culture it is too.

Basically, it is a mini-EU that would suffer greatly if it were to undergo strict Ukrainization, including a curious splinter group that speaks old Russian and is not part of Putin's cadre. I‘m learning Russian just for hobby but it does not mean I support Putin. I‘m fully supporting Ukraine. The reason why I‘m learning Russian, is, because Russian is the most spoken Slavic language and is widely spoken all over the post-SSSR countries, and I like Russian classical music and literature. However, I can understand that Ukrainians don’t want to speak Russian anymore so when I speak with them I usually use English. But an Ukrainian guy told me that I shouldn’t learn the language of terrorists and learn Ukrainian instead, it was just too much for me. I was not speaking Russian with him, I’m not living in Ukraine. Russian is the language of Putin, that‘s true, but it‘s not only spoken by Putin but also a lot of people even outside of Russia. Likewise, German was the language of Hitler, English was the language of Americans who persecuted Native Americans. If you only want to speak „innocent“ languages, you cannot speak any major languages…

Russian Catherine the Great founded Odesa in 1794. At this time Ukraine, Ukrainian nation or language didn't exist. So who's is Odessa? Ukrainian nation ( if such as nation exist ) is parasitizing on Russian nation.
