  • In Ukraine, in the region of Donbass there is an ongoing conflict. How did this conflict start and how are people in the Donbass area dealing with this conflict that tears apart families and entire villages? Is Ukraine a divided country where war will destroy regions like the Donbass? A documentary about Ukraine, the conflict in the Donbass region and the people that have to live with it.
For over a year, a dirty battle has been going on in 'the Donbass', an area rich with coal and industry in East Ukraine. More than six thousand people have been killed so far. Jelle talks to the Russian rebels at the front. What kind of people are they? He also visits the Donetsk opera, which has a show every day - war or no war.
In this eight-part travel series the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between the powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
On the Maidan, Kiev´s central square, in spring of 2014 the war started. Thousands of people demanded closer relations with Europe. After weeks of protests, the police intervened. One hundred people died. In Ukraine they are known as the Heavenly Hundred. President Yanukovych fled to Russia and the revolution started. And with the revolution came the war that would split the country in two. Dutch Journalist Corstius talks to people on the street and investigates the status quo and the way the population deals with the changes the country has gone through.
He visits the place in Odessa where on May 2 2014 46 pro-Russian activists died from suffocation in a former trade union building. They were under attack from pro-Ukrainian activists and a fire broke out. Until today it is not clear what caused it. This fire made many Russians leave for Ukraine to join the fight so that the war spread from Crimea to the entire eastern region of Ukraine.

I am from Georgia and we had very similiar situation but instead of Russians, Kreml always supported Abkhazians and South Ossetians against Georgians, when in fact, Georgia doesn't want to lose own historical lands and is not happy when its own people are being expelled from own homes.

@@XAE_A_Xii It's sad to hear that. Wish you the best.
Well, you gave me the task :)
Honestly, I'm not the best person to talk about the situation. I myself ignored events for 8 years, even though I was on the battlefield, and was not interested in politics until recently.
If you still want to hear something from me, an ordinary resident who was lucky only to sleep to the sound of gunshots and explosions, without even personally experiencing them in his house, then I will say very briefly, avoiding terrible details:
In 2014, Ukraine wanted to join NATO. Donetsk and Lugansk were against it, wanting to find support in Russia and start with an independent existence. As a result, a war and endless clashes began. One can argue about the stupidity of actions, the senselessness of this enmity, but for many years of cruelty on the part of Ukraine (the previous president said that "your children will hide in basements", and the current one called us "creatures", not people), people only want the end. Russia provides this (and of course, this is not out of the kindness of the soul ... it's all politics ...) and, apparently, does it without unnecessary victims of the population of Ukraine, which I am glad about. Causes of Russia? Lots of options, but everything is connected to the west. This war has been predicted for a long time, and recently Ukraine has often spoken about the creation of atomic weapon. Russia had a choice - to bow to the West and accept the disintegration of the country in the future, or to show that it was ready for swift and aggressive action. I understood it this way, but I advise you to simply take an interest in the war issue in general (or Russian's war history specifically) in order to understand the situation in your homeland. In general, war stories are similar to each other everywhere. I can only say with certainty that the events in the Donbass are not a performance. People were dying... horrible deaths, for various reasons. The Ukrainian authorities are not the forces of light, as they say. And it was very disappointing for everyone here to be ignored around the world when it came to the war in Ukraine. We do not exist in the western information field (which hints at involvement in the events for me). We are fake.
Hmm.. I'm starting to think that you only wanted to know about the attack on Ukraine. Sorry if it's true :)
It is hard to say whether there were Ukrainian attacks at that very moment, whether the plan for Ukraine's attack on us was in the plan. We've had an evacuation. I've seen a few videos and photos that looked like a staging. Mass mobilization and all, war. My guess? Yes, we are pawns on this board. Another reason is to justify actions (it's probably better to look like a defender). Does it matter? Not really. One way or another, Russia will end the long-begun war and its brave soldiers are standing by. Otherwise, the war would not have ended here.

@@DevilLoveMetal i've read all your wrote, it's all very sad and interesting to hear your opinion that sounds objective to me. I am blaming all countries - some for provoking, others for being weak to respond badly to those provocations, which in turn cause the situations to aggravate. It's very possible there were cruelties from each side, hatred is the enemy to clear thinking. I am still convinced you didn't start protesting against Ukrainian government in 2014 without the help from Kreml, which is notorious for igniting conflicts where it is needed. On the other hand, I can partially understand Russia is doing all this in the interest of own country and tries to safeguard from western attacks. But again, I think it's a bit of paranoia to believe the west is working hard to destroy russia, i think it's just as scared from Russia and Russia from West. And so on. I think you guys living in Ukraine should have not gone against their government, and there wouldn't be such negative treatment from their side. actions cause reactions. I imagine Armenians living in parts of Georgia mainly populated by Armenians wil start doing anti-georgians actions, I wouldn't expect georgian government would take that easily just like in any other government.

I will put points for easier reading.
And know that although I enjoy talking, I am not versed in matters. Again, I advise you to watch the military channels on RUclips or in some other way immerse yourself in the question if you want to try to find the truth.
      1. It is hard to believe about false fear, but it is quite possible. I just listened to ethnogeopolitics the other day and everything looks pretty logical. Russia has extremely large resources on the territory. The West wants to get them and freely use them, not buy them. To defeat the enemy, the tactics of loosening the country from within are used. For a long time, Russia has been absorbing a lot from Western countries: movies, culture, language, computers, smartphones... we love it. Now, sanctions are used to take it away from people (and there have always been sanctions) - the West is always dissatisfied with something. Taking what they like from the people creates aggression against the government, which can lead to an overthrow attempt and a horrific civil war.
      2. Yes ... there is a lot of hatred among people for each other. Propaganda works from all sides. I first got acquainted with the information war and it's terrible. We're trying to keep humanity. And it seems that the order from Russia was to act as decently as possible, without unnecessary cruelty. Therefore, the troops of the people's republics will act in the same way. This is very good. I watch videos where people are happy to meet Russian troops after the capture of cities.
      3. As for the disengagement in 2014. I also thought so... I had a good life in Ukraine (although I was still a child and perhaps this is nostalgia), but looking at what the Ukrainian government has become (perhaps these are propaganda actions on me, although I tried form an opinion through the words of President Zelensky and from swastikas on block posts), now, I'm glad to be on the other side. And by and large, it would hardly have affected the situation now.
And I didn't make the decisions. The rallies seemed crazy and scary to me. I did not understand the situation at all and ignored the politics, as I said earlier. And I'm generally marginal. What really happened there is no longer understood.
      4. I am not familiar with your situation, I do not want to say anything, because I can just spread ignorance. If you find similarities, then just try to put the picture together yourself.

As someone who lived at the Maryinka Boarding School (orphanage) that the Ukrainians attacked, I can understand why Russia attacked. Most of the children living in the orphanages that the Ukrainian party attacked were Russians. Do you honestly think that the RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT will let that slide??
Example A: I was born in Russia, don't know how i ended up in ukraine but I did,... ended up at this particular orphanage. I was able to speak RUSSIAN without a problem until i started school at the age of 7. I used to get beat on the daily for simply speaking RUSSIAN and not ukrainian. And if you know anything about the two countries the language is very similar so its pretty damn easy to get the two confused.
Example B: In 2016 i hosted an orphan form ukriane (i ended up learning later on we were from the same orphanage). She told me about the orphanage was attacked while she was there (we're talking about innocent children) (BUT IT SEEMS LIKE NOONE GIVES TWO FUCKS ABOUT CHILDREN IN THIS THREAD) . I also found out after much research that orphanages WILL/DO PIMP OUT orphans and that's exactly what they were doing to the girl I hosted. My family and I found a family for her and that family wanted to adopted her. The family that wanted to adopt her PHYSICALLY went to the Maryinka Boarding School and got turned away (keep in mind that i was from the same orphanage and got adopted; why couldn't she be) numerous times. The family even meet/talked with the director of the orphanage and still got rejected WITHOUT an EXPLANATION.
SMELL SOMETHING FISHY or, IS IT JUST ME??

Why the hell would Ukraine purposefully attack orphanages, or vice versa?? Seriously think about it. It holds no tactical or strategic advantage and all it does is inflame tensions amongst outside international actors to come in and stop you with military force for humanitarian forces. Seriously. Think about it. Now what it useful is pretending your enemy attacks orphanages or hospitals of children’s schools with abandon, so as to justify your invasion and combat.

At the end of the day the majority of the Ukranian people have to chose what they want. I think the world knows that being a Russian client state will do nothing for Ukraine. All Putin is doing is ruining his own country and selling its soul to china. What will Putin and Russia do when China invariably decides to turn on Russia? It will happen in my life time. Then one year ago today Dec 2022 Kiev not only upped it's shelling of Donetsk by 10X, but both Poroshenko & Merkel admitting they lied their way through the Minsk Agreements, including signing them, to plan for war.
Russia indeed HAD no intention to occupy Donbas. It acted honorably and stayed out when it could have invaded, but it honorably tried to let the matter be solved internally. There is no statement that says, Russia is or was too cowardly to defend Donbas if Minsk is betrayed. Minsk was betrayed, the rest is the history of the beginning of the end of Ukraine.

For Russia Ukraine is a non nation-state. This has been declared officially. The so-called separatist groups was small groups employed by Russia. It is astonishing how wrong the claim that Russia does not want to occupy the area is. Russia was the occupier and the instigator of the conflict but wanted to present it as an civil war. There was an civil war aspect, but not the main one. Russia was trying to demolish Ukraine but didn't want to appear as the aggressor.
Minsk agreement was not to be lasted. It was implemended at gun-point and if Ukraine was succumbed to follow the agreement as Russia was interpreted it, that would mean the de facto demolishion of Ukraine and no sovereign state can do something like that.
But you can not say that the claim that "Russia has no intention to occupy the area" is correct cos it's contrary to any sesne of reality itself. Because you want to surpass reality, you are trying to find some minor issues and some absurd justifications to muddy the waters.

There is presently, and never has been any justifiable reason for RuZZia's WAR against Ukraine. The only reason that I can see is a high degree of hubris and greed on the part of Pootin and the political and military establishment of RuZZia. All the reasons, given at the beginning of the war, by Pootin and other RuZZian sources, have been shown to be false, lies and deliberate obfuscation for the pupose of distraction:
** Protection of the interests of the Russian speaking civilian population in the east of Ukraine? Thousands have been murdered by the RuZZian aerial and artillery bombardments, the survivors made homeless and destitute, displaced persons within their own country, and refugees in other countries supporting Ukraine.
** Nazis? -- Ukraine has probably roughly the same percentage of people holding significantly right leaning philosophy and views among their population, as any other "free world" country and probably fewer than in Russia, particularly in their military forces.
** Demilitarization? -- If the conquest was going to be as easy as the RuZZians thought, I wonder what level of militarization the RuZZians believed that the Ukrainians had? The RuZZians must have been aware that the Ukrainian military, though possibly well trained, would not have had significant quantities of munitions and materiel. Presumably, that would have been the reason for believing Ukraine to be an easy target. Most of the military hardware, that the Ukrainians currently have, has arrived in Ukraine since the second invasion of Ukraine's territory, by RuZZia in February 2022 after the first invasion in 2014.
** NATO "threat"? -- In this day and age of intercontinental ballistic missiles that can be fired to the other side of the world, what reason has Pootin and his Moscow menagerie to hide behind the petti-coats and hang on to the apron-strings of little sister, Ukraine for the purpose of protecting RuZZia from NATO. It is definitely apparent that "the boot is on the other foot" and that other countries believe that RuZZia is a threat to their sovereignty and independance.
Indeed there are many other countries that appear, according to comments by Pootin and others from the Moscow menagerie, to be at risk of aggressive and offensive invasion by RuZZia, should they succeed in their belligerent offensive, invasion and WAR waged against Ukraine. This is completely the reverse of RuZZia's claims of feeling threatened by NATO. The comments, by people in the RuZZian establishment, maintain and support the assertion and belief that RuZZia should be confined and prevented from proceeding with such attacks on any other countries for the foreseeable future.
How absolutely Preposterous, Ridiculous and Pathetic is the position of RuZZia given their stated position, all of which has changed, from time to time, as the war proceeded, and the RuZZian asserted positions were, at each stage, shown to be false?

I agree. That's what I have learned as well. This is ultimately a civil war in a country that is struggling to put together its culture and heritage and societal philosophies. And its struggling to thrive because of corruption and conflict and most everyday people are powerless while both sides are getting overly armed by much more powerful countries that care less about Ukraine and more about fighting each other. It's like Mom and Dad hating each other and when their kids fight, instead of breaking it apart, they pick a side and give the kid they side with a bigger weapon so they can win the fight and make their spouse suffer in the process.

@@PNH-sf4jz OSINT investigators called the real irretrievable losses of the Ukrainian army. The irretrievable losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on October 20, 2022 amounted to 402,000 people, of which 387,000 were killed. Losses among mercenaries and volunteers from Poland, the Baltic States, Romania amounted to 54,000 of them killed 31,240 people. These are the OSINT data calculated using reports from funeral agencies, extracts from morgues, as well as the results of the analysis of radio, cellular and satellite exchange of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces. The media also report that the committee of soldiers' mothers of Ukraine allegedly prepared more than 320,000 appeals "about the fate of the missing fighters," but the SBU forbade them to submit for national security purposes - however, these widespread data have no documentary confirmation. Their source is the statements of a number of members of the committee of soldiers' mothers, made orally and in social networks. These statistics can be compared with estimates of losses made by the Western military. The former deputy head of the US European Command, Stephen Twitty, said in an interview with Linke Zeitung that "200 thousand fighters somehow mysteriously disappeared from the APU, and no one will tell where they are today." "The Armed Forces of Ukraine ... We have lost tens and tens of thousands of people killed and wounded, Ukrainians have paid a terrible price," said General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
"Ukraine is losing 6,000 soldiers every month, which is 12 times more than America lost in Vietnam," retired colonel and veteran ex-Senator Richard Black admitted in his speech. However, during the discussion of his statement, experts came to a more significant figure in 15 000 - 20 000 killed soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine monthly.

The Donbas is a heavily industrializes region, in that it has a history, and its best time can be one when work was plentiful. That activity was also highly socialized, in that we must consider the two models one which is capitalized and one that is not. In a state operated business, the revenue goes to the state and then the state paid for everything a very different social model. In a private operations capital is disbursed within and allocated to ensure it retains a market share and profits. The transition from the one system to the others revealed that much of the industry was not profitable. The times of high fell to times of low, polluted and not prosperous the area was disenfranchised and did not get what was needed and here we are, many are descendants of Russian migrations to the industry, and they are caught up in the recall of the past, they may see it better in other areas within Russia however outside of Moscow and St. Peterburg it is not much different for laborers the same situation the transition was not easy and became riddled with corruption. Both Ukraine and Russia are terribly corrupt rated as some of the most corrupted systems. It may be wiser to look West and the EU however its no silver bullet.

in fact, Ukraine is now much more united in 2021, since now everyone understands that the "Russian world" is just a beautiful facade behind which only war, degradation and poverty are hidden, and the war was imposed by Russia as a piece, then they said on Russian TV we are Ukrvinian Nazis in the west, we drink blood and paint Russian-speaking children on the cross, although in reality there was no such thing, and there was even no discrimination of Russian-speaking people, so until 2013 we, in the west, in the East, we considered Russians as brothers as we now consider Belarusians

I think it is also decent to say that a minority of Russian soldiers in Donetsk and Luhansk are basically all in higher administration which orchestrate everything. It is easy to check. Just look at the official biographies of the main leaders of Donetsk and Luhansk republics, especially at the early stages of conflict when the fighting started. Most of them were born in Russia, lived there before 2014, and were connected to the FSB. That is especially visible for people responsible for all armed actions: Borodai, Strelkov, Girkin, etc. After the "hot" phase was over Putin either called them back or simply killed them and hired more people from the local population. After seeing Russian tanks on the streets and Russian soldiers in the city, the kidnapping and torture of pro-Ukrainian activists, one could imagine that the moods of the people changed. Many pro-Ukrainian people left, some were put in jail, and many just decided to sit quietly and not speak up. And again we forget the role of the Russian propaganda machine and cutting off the Ukrainian TV channels as soon as they could. I would imagine that missing these details makes a huge difference

Thanks! It is a decent attempt at an unbiased view of the situation. I would like to add a few things about the events in Odessa. Firstly, I think that forgetting the victims of May 2 is not a good decision. It should be investigated and should be honored. Secondly, I would like to add more nuance to the situation. Odessa was always a city where there were two small active groups of people: so-called "pro-Russian" and "pro-Ukrainian" citizens with a large indifferent majority between them. During all these years, these two active groups had clashes and disagreements, but it was mainly expressed in words and voting results. They had their representatives in local administration, but nothing this violent ever happened. And here comes the question of why it happened on May 2? As a witness, I can definitely say that the role of Russian "news" was huge. Starting from the events in Kyiv, they were using truly horrible lies to provoke the conflict in every Russian-speaking city. The Free Russia Forum and Russian journalist Igor Yakovenko are creating a database documenting crimes of the Putin regime both inside and outside Russia. One of their points is that TV channels and journalists that translate lies which can lead to deaths should be held responsible too. He has a lot of information about events in Odessa on May 2 and he provides good arguments all of which I cannot present here. I do not release from responsibility the Ukrainian and local government for not doing more to prevent the tragedy. But you have to understand that Russia uses its media as a lethal weapon. It is a huge billion-dollar machine that works for Putin and his goals. Remembering how they manipulated and twisted every piece of information, every attempt at peaceful dialogue, or simply made up horrible lies about homicides of Russian-speaking children in Kyiv helps to understand how it contributed majorly to such a fragile compromise that existed in cities like Odessa after Yanukovych's escape, Crimea and Donetsk events.
