    Only reason this concerns me is for the mental health of our team guys. I think doing this stuff can have bad lasting damage while it might be therapeutic at the moment. Aside from that, I understand the oversight needed and to reign guys back in, but when you create the most deadly/effective human hunters this world has ever seen, don’t get upset with them when they aren’t as clean as the fairytale you drew up in your mind. Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with smashing the enemy skull into the ground, the problem was that they were civilians. They didn’t know that though when their leash was taken off. When you let the dogs off the leash, shit is going to get brutal.

    The conservative apologists apparently need a safe space. No one is saying that all of the SEALS are bad guys, that's not the point. We never should've been in Afghanistan in the first place. The Afghanis had nothing to do with 9/11. 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. We wasted thousands of American lives, killed countless Afghanis, and wasted trillions of dollars that could've been spent on our veterans here at home. We've been there for nearly two decades and haven't made the situation any better. And in the process, yes, we've committed heinous acts, war crimes, and destroyed entire families. If these words make you angry, GOOD. You should be angry at US foreign policy and the military industrial complex that sends our brave soldiers to fight in stupid, pointless wars that DO NOT make us any safer. We are only creating more enemies with these foolish wars.

    This is deceptive journalism. "Canoeing" targets isn't an atrocity or war crime. It was an unintended consequence. All US special operations units within JSOC were made to change their tactics to shooting enemies in their faces instead of aiming center-mass (torso) after insurgents were still able to kill Army & Marines infantrymen through touching together wires that ran down their arms to their wrists to detonate their suicide vests in their last seconds alive. The only effective way to prevent it was by shooting them in their mustache areas because the bullet pierces through to the brain stem at the base of the cranium to instantly sever all communication between the body and the nervous system. The caliber of ammunition they use is so powerful that it consequently splits their heads open in a V shape. It isn't done to mutilate the enemy. It's just a side effect of the adjustments that were made by US forces due to conditions on the ground

    There is almost zero of this that comes as any surprise to me and further having served myself and knowing the level of dedication our military members carry every day nor do I blame them for being that desensitized to foreign combatants or their humanity. War is hell.

      I was a Soldier, served 14 years in US Army 3rd SFG 2nd Battalion Charlie Company ODA 3324 & I agree with the civilian & reporter 100%. You guys worship Navy SEALS as though they are Deities & infallible, when it's the exact opposite. We are trained as Soldiers to conduct ourselves with honor, dignity, respect & self-control on the battle field & committing War crimes is NOT something that should ever be looked beyond, excused or justified. WE KNOW BETTER BECAUSE WE'RE SPECIFICALLY TRAINED TO KNOW BETTER. There is no excuse under the Sun to act in conduct that is unbecoming of an Officer. Wearing that great uniform does not give us a license to Kill at will & break the law, both Foreign & Domestic. No one is above being reprimanded for their actions & being a War Criminal is a disgrace to the Flag & Armed Services. We take an Oath, we aren't supposed to break that Oath by being barbarians & savages.

      @@wolf7el356doesn’t mean the operators deserve prison time for terrorizing the enemy. They’re human. Here’s how to fix this issue. Give them time off or even outright medically retire them with full pension. This isn’t about treatment for the enemy, this is about noticing how overused JSOC operators are. If they’re brutally dismembering ISIS fighters, then that’s a sign that the operator needs help. Not punishment.

      @Atheismwillrise Yes it does. We have a strict set of laws & guidelines that we our bound by under Federal & International law. If you break them, you will suffer the consequences. We are taught from Bootcamp to be accountable for our actions & there is no excuse for being a War criminal. What separates us from them is that we follow the rule of law & do not act like barbarians, we hold ourselves to a higher standard than any other collective fighting force on the planet & that's what defines us as exceptional. A JSOC operator knows better than ANYBODY that he's not supposed to do those things, because in order to even get inducted into JSOC there's a long series of assessment & selection processes that happen for all JSOC units in which you are mentally evaluated on how you handle a multitude of different scenarios. They specifically quiz you both in the classroom & in live simulation in the field in mock-ups to see how you're going to act in highly stressful environments. You are briefed before EVERY mission about what you can & cannot do in terms of rules of engagement & specifically how to handle any captured detainees & enemy combatants. What these SEALS were doing was not "terrorizing the enemy", what they were doing is blatantly disregarding their orders & acting in accordance to their own ego & putting themselves above their unit, their command & the mission itself. There's a reason why Court Marshall exist, there's a reason why every Special Operator doesn't act this way, because they all know it's wrong.

    I find it to be dishonest to begin the interview discussing a seal officer bashing the head of a dead man. Only later did we find out this was days after a seal member was killed and decapitated/mutilated. These men aren’t robots and we cannot always separate our human emotions from the ethical standards we try to maintain.
    Violence leads to more violence, savagery is meet with barbarity.

      No one is excusing the behavior but that behavior didn't happen in isolation. The folks that committed these actions didn't just wake up one day and say to themselves "let's go behead and skin some individuals". The point of all this is that if you repeatedly expose individuals to atrocious acts of violence they become desensitized to it. This happens in the military, to police, correction officers, etc. What we should be trying to do is come of with strategies to prevent these things from happening. Part of that may be reducing the amount of time individuals are deployed in very hostile environments, more frequent psychological evaluations, extended periods of decompression after deployments.

      @@pmh1nic You are right, but nobody is saying it happened in isolation, and even though you can certain things (because your desensitized and nobody is watching), it doesnt mean you should do it, they did know it was wrong, they knew the rules, and truth is not everyone chose to do this things, actually it was a minority, even though many more could have done them they chose not to, so it was a choice and thus you cant strip all responsibility.. I think they derailed, they made bad decisions and the real problem was nobody in command was ready to catch them and help them get back on track.
      I think part of their training should be focused in strengthening their moral and ethical compase. So in the end the system failed them, and it should be improved, you are right about that.. But it still was their choice, they knew, and if many more others in the same situation could and did make the right choice, then they are accountable for their actions.

    When you ask others to kill for you, you have to accept some of the guilt for their actions regardless of whether or not you understood what you were asking in the first place. Politicians start wars. This doesn't absolve all sins committed by soldiers, but it mitigates them. Lynndie England got crucified in the press, got court marshaled IIRC, The person who created the situation at Abu Ghraib has taken up painting and is living a comfortable retirement, never have been held accountable for anything.

    These type of things happen all the time in warfare. My father fought in the Pacific during WWII and using dead Japanese soldiers for target practice was common. Collecting teeth was common. Collecting sculls, bones, and other body parts was common. War turns us all into animals.

      Anton Leimbach I wouldn’t compare the wars initiated by America in the Middle East over the last 17 years to WW2. I too had family in the Pacific theatre and suffered at Japanese hands. The prolonged horrific conditions both sides went through battling the islands in the last 10 months were beyond anything, anyone cam imagine today.
      Some people just like blood lust. Some have their minds turned in overwhelming situations like WW2.

      johnneydoe when they are talking about canoeing it makes me recall a time the UN had to evaluate Marine kills in Iraq I think 2004 time frame.. because the Marines were getting too many headshots and the UN council was concerned that Marines were intentionally executing prisoners.. the investigation concluded that the enemy would only show the top of their heads as they shot around walls (spray & pray) and the Marines had been issued ACOGS/RCO (4x mag optic) so they'd shoot at what was exposed aka the head. War isn't a movie. You don't get a restart. It's you or it's them. Fight or flight. These men were asked to do things many people can't and would not be able to do. ROE's are established and carried out but sometimes war gets the best of man unfortunately & instead of standing by and reasoning many ppl rush to slam the gavel rather than understand the nature of war. It's hell. Anyone curious on the psychological effect war has on man I'd suggest reading "On killing" it really gives the depth to how people coup with the effect war has on them. And what it takes from them.

    This reminds me of a unit in Canada called the Canadian Airborne Regiment. It wasn't so much a special operations force but an elite unit of shock troops. I met several members of this unit well I was living near a Canadian forces base. They were proud of there unit and honoured to be a part of it. But they did admit that sometimes units that create such a mythic reputation can attract soldiers with sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies. One of the reasons it was so effective and feared is that its ranks were filled with these types of people and they make very efficient soldiers that have little regard for human life and have virtually no panic in combat.

    The term "war crimes" is used repeatedly throughout this interview by both interviewer and interviewee yet neither specify exactly what war crimes were committed. They don't even define the term. The Geneva Convention on the other hand does quite clearly define war crimes. When viewed by someone sitting in a comfortable and safe video recording studio who has never been in combat are some of the alleged actions repugnant? Yes, but even if the allegations are absolutely true and accurate are they "war crimes"? Not according to the Geneva Convention.

    Wars are ugly and sometimes you have to go in deep to get to the level of the enemy that you are trying to eliminate. We have units that are capable of doing this and they are extremely effective in what they do. These units operate outside of the public eye and that is where they are supposed to stay. These units sacrifice everything from family life to marriage to spending hardly anytime at home due to constant deployments. The second quote that comes to mind is, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf".
    The two people (reporters) in this video are so far out of their element in regards to what they are talking about. They are literally on the outside looking in, however, what they are trying to see is incomprehensible to them.

    It is absurd to put these brave and absolutely essential warfighters in the hellish fights they are ordered to be a part of, and then criticize the way they do their duty. This is far from new. British forces in India regularly executed Punjabi fighters with cannon fire to obliterate their remains. In the minds of the Punjabi, this kept them from going to their afterlife. If you're going to combat a culture of death, like extreme Islam, you must be willing to fight on their terms. To not do so is to guarantee defeat. SEALS are extremely well-trained, patriotic warriors, and sitting back, safely behind the wall of protection they help keep maintained, criticizing what they do in the heat of battle, while risking death and worse, is deplorable.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, first we send these elite dedicated warriors to fight a brutal enemy that torture untill they're satisfied and then behead them while recording it for the whole world to see if they get caught, second, our country keep deploying them to the front lines and even behind enemy lines time after time after time well beyond the "burn out" point and then our country treat them like criminals even to the point of having a hard time getting help from VA after they return. I think that this is similar to the "civilians" asking for a fair trial for the ones in Guantanamo.
      Well, there are no trials at all in war, either you live or get killed. Most of these critics so called "geniuses" haven't even been servicemembers let alone been in combat trying to make the correct decisions under fire and in extremelly dangerous enviroments. Maybe we should send "Girl Scouts" with a lot of cookies on deployments against these enemies or the critics can pick up a rifle, munitions and equipment to solve this issues against these unmercifull individuals,(taliban, isil or any other), so they can make the right decisions and do what they think is right. It's very easy to talk of an issue when you haven't experience it.
      Civilians may not even care of the phychological problems that these servicemembers bring back with them, problems that cause the fracture of their mental health, family circle and even to the point of committing suicide if they do not receive the appropriate help on time. This servicemembers certainly deserve so much better.

    What is legal isn't necessarily moral and what is moral isn't necessarily legal.
    Right and wrong 'actions' can Only be determined by their effects, not by decrees.

    Why is it that anyone who was never in the military and reports for a living seems to think they have the moral high ground on any topic of warfare? Hats off to all the brave men and women who put their asses on the line for all of us. I served with many in the military who did the same thing and would do it again if they had to.       @@rron5641 In 1970 during the Viet Nam war, I was drafted into the United States Army and served with the paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Division. After that I joined the United States Marine Corps from 1972 to 1976. I am no hero but served with hundreds of hero's. I am proud of my service to my country and if my country asked me to serve today I would do so without hesitation. You see, I am a patriot. I believe in my country and believe all of us have a obligation and a duty to serve if our country ask that of us. I may disagree with the political opinions of others but I will serve my country to defend anyone right to voice their opinion no matter how repugnant I think it is. That is what makes the United States the greatest country in the world and I would defy anyone to find any other place where you can find the opportunities and freedoms that one can find here. Peace.

    The war started after the terrorists trained by the US military training camps in Afghanistan guarded by US military soldiers attacked the USA. They were all Saudi citizens who attacked the USA on 911 and no Afghan people were involved in the camps or attacks on the USA. This was established by CNN and federal prosecutors and children who spoke to the soldiers guarding the training camps were arrested as persons of interest but held without hearing or trial in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and federal prosecutors were fired by the White House attorney Brett Cavanaug citing executive privilege. Afghanistan people were not involved attacking the USA at all. Taliban ISIS and Al Queda are Saudi terrorists trained by the US military training camps in Afghanistan. Afghan people were not involved in attacks on the USA at all.

    Most military units are run by the enlisted soldiers. Officers provide guidance and direction, but the enlisted personnel make it happen. Sergeants and Petty Officers make every unit work. Officers get involved when needed, but normally in a limited fashion.

    Nearly three thousand comments in this thread, but I'm adding mine anyway.
    Do I favor more wars? No. Is it acceptable behavior to mutilate the enemy post-mortem? No. There are laws governing our behavior even in wartime and combat. There are also protocols and localized rules governing our professionalism. Dead is dead. Even if we lost a teammate and the enemy did shitty things to his corpse, retaliation is accepted and expected, mutilating the dead is not. We become no better than the enemy we seek to destroy and defeat by succumbing to the impulsiveness that creeps into the mind after suffering the loss of a close friend, brother and team member.
    It would be best if politicians and their global banking controllers, those inbred psychopathic bloodline banking families, who always benefit from (financing BOTH sides plus) all the killings, bombings, terror attacks and worse, didn't do everything they can to start wars and send our people off to kill and be killed. But the masses haven't yet figured that out. Until then, until ALL people wake up and start working together to make the politicians do what the voters want AND people can resolve their artificially created differences (stop buying the media lies) to become united to a common goal of ending their grip on everything, every system, including education, entertainment, banking, media, medicine, industry of every kind, food production, access to information, the intelligence community, communications, the military, organized religion, and so many more systemic and global sociological controls there will be no peace and no end to wars on this planet. There are but a few families with access to limitless wealth that have been behind every war and genocide for centuries. Incredulity and disbelief by the average person to see that their control is in fact very real are two of the best tools they depend on to retain their global power.

    These men are heroes who put their lives at risk hundreds of times during a combat deployment, and they should be given great latitude to prosecute our enemies.       Seal team 6 is not the most secretive unit in the world. Delta Force is more secretive, JTF2 in canada is more secretive even the priminister of canada doesn't know everything including their deployments. Many countries have more secretive tier 1 than seal team 6. CIA has its own special forces who are more secretive.

    We're in a war where no prisoners are taken. So I don't have a problem with it.
    Also this reporter doesn't realize Spec Ops guys train to shoot in the head. You shoot someone in the chest they can still press a button and detonate their explosive vest. Shooting them in the head turns their lights off immediately. It's a very good skill to have if you're going up against terrorists who use suicide vests. I've seen a lot of people shot in the head and have never seen a "V" that leaves the brain exposed as he describes. The brain has the consistency of pudding. If you shoot someone in the head the skull bones shatter and the pressure of a bullet traveling faster than the speed of sound causes the top of the head to blow apart and the brain always splatters everywhere. Sometimes it completely removes the brain from where it sits leaving an empty bowl. That might be what they are describing as a canoe. Either way, OBL got what was coming to him. So have many others you will never hear about. As far as the wedding party. It was a mistake and war is full of mistakes. The head stomping was rage coming out due to the loss of his team member. If you lived in the wild west and someone chopped up your little brother or mom to pieces, you just might stomp that bad guys head a few times yourself. It's something many regular folks have in them. Not just SEALs.

      People don't switch off when you shoot them in the head, you have to shoot them in the brain stem, which is a small target, and in a confrontation pretty mobile. You shoot people in the head if you think they have armor, or if it just happens to be the first thing you lock onto.
      The US works in the world with partners, and based on a population the majority of whom don't share your values. That's a problem whether you see it as weakness or whatever doesn't matter. Shooting one old dude doesn't win wars. You can kill tons of people and just make it worse. That is how this mess started, though radicalization of Egyptian prisoners, and the transfer of them to the war in Afghanistan to toss out the Russians.

      I guess you don't follow the prisoner swaps ... I've poked around at brain tissue and you just don't what you're talking about, also nobody is trained to shoot for the head, they're trained to win. It's not a one sentence training, it's weeks and months of instruction and practice.

      33 years in law enforcement, many of those as a homicide detective and 14 shootings on my record. So I do know what I'm talking about. Also I trained every month to put two rounds in the chest and one in the head. I could draw my pistol and put a round on a 8 inch steel plate up to 100 feet away faster than anyone in my last unit before I retired. Unlike some cops, I took my shooting abilities seriously. Not some gun fanatic, I just figured if the taxpayers were gonna pay me to protect them, I was going to give them the best.

      Pakistani jihadis killed our army captain and beheaded him.. our Naga regiment guys the next day killed the entire jihadi squad exept 2 .. and our Naga brothers ate those 2 ... Distributed the remains ... It's eye for an eye it's war..

    Sometimes you have to send evil to kill evil. These Seal teams are not evil, but the things they come up against are absolutely evil. When you see kids' heads on pikes as you are walking through a village in Afghanistan, you see what you are dealing with. I saw a civilian get killed, but he was raping a 3-year-old child. The things we came across, you couldn't even imagine in your wildest nightmares. I'm not a Seal, but I was right there.

      If, according to you, SEAL Team 6 doesn't consist of 'real tier one operators' I don't know what group does consist of them (besides Delta Force). Also, if that is what is 'allowed to be released' I don't think that SEAL Team 6 is the most secretive militairy group on the planet anymore, like I already said. Information like this that just gets out in the open would be highly classified in my country, especially when it's about our special forces. I think Seals aren't the silent professionals they used to be, or they should be. last couple of years there have been so many that opened up and wrote a book or made a movie I can't take them as seriously anymore compared to other groups who actually value their integrity more.

      The peace we maintain is not the same around the world. Our laws were written in the blood of our enemies. Try fighting a war against people who practice the same and/or worse with "civili-ty".
      Surely hundreds of the same wars fought by our SEAL T6 were won with "civili-ty".
