Just got my 10 pack of Willows! Read the instructions they were awesome, but maybe put in this RUclips address. This is a great video....a picture is worth a thousand words. lol
I got my Willows from a different Nursery. That nurseries video they planted it deep with only about 1-1/2" sticking up (top growth). I still have 19 more to plant or should keep them up higher than that. When I had them soaking in a container I would also spray the upper part with a water bottle. They look great after two weeks. This video as well done. Very well explained.
It's not an exact science but we see better results with 2/3 in water and 2/3 in the soil. Wherever your water line is is where your soil line should be! Hope that helps.
Some brilliant clear information and seeing the different examples root growth is really interesting!! For someone just starting out growing a whole bunch of willow this was really helpful, thank you!! Although I doubt we’ll have much issue keeping them wet as we haves moved to Wales, UK 😁
I just inherited a start that appears to be pretty brown and dead. It has roots on it but no growth. I was thinking of trying your method out first before seeing this video. Hopefully I can revive the start. Thanks for this video.
You bet! definitely worth a try. Many starts will appear dry and dead but they are usually just more mature cuttings meaning they have more of a brown dry bark on them as opposed to a green start. In actuality they are usually more hardy.
Is right now, the end of September, too late to plant my very well rooted cuttings? Or should I just put them in pots and over winter until spring? I’m in zone 5
I had to reorder again, ordered some last year but none of them survived once transplanted despite well watered. In nj here with sandy soil, filled in the areas around it with composted soil. I know fertilizer is not preferred, but do they produce enough of their own nutrients once in the ground after a month, or will a light slow release natural fertilizer like Milorganite help? They did so great that first month, but then started weakening turned brown and died after month 2.
So we just bought 36 acres, and I want to plant a hybrid willow privacy screen along a county road so the neighbors aren't tempted to hunt our land. 🙂 But we'll only be going out there every couple of weeks. So we can't water daily. Is it possible for them to grow only being watered at this frequency?
Super excited to start my willows! Are these able to thrive indoors? I have a juniper bonsai that I also just received and it’s mid December and planning on keeping them indoors most of the time other than occasional days outdoors once it starts to warm up again!
@@chrisboucher79 so I have done a ton of research and for willows I am doing one in a larger pot outside and one indoors but they are too small to put out in the cold they aren’t hardy enough yet so they are under grow lights and get a ton of water. The soil is always pretty damp
Both Juniper and Willow are outdoor trees and will not get enough light indoors. Do some research on it. Not sure why the nursery would say they can be kept indoors as this is entirely false and they will eventually die off indoors 🤷♂️
My starts grew well through summer - in pots - how do I care for them now? It is October winter zone 5 high desert - and freezing temperatures are increasing.
I’m in zone 6 high desert. My willows survived their first winter out of pot and are now ok. One was even eaten to the ground by a deer and is now growing like a bush. I lost hope on that one. They’re tough.
What’s the process after having the rooted starts in a planter pot? How long before you pull them out and transplant into the desired spot in the yard?
I transplanted at about 11 days after I got them and they sprouted good. Its still too cold here to set them out. Going to harden them off on sunny days until then
My package was lost and Then fond, m 4 months later it shows up in my mailbox,, it is all molded and brown, i washed it down and placed it in water like you said, Is there hope for my starters? Any recommendations?
my fence is 5 inches from the property line, how far from the fence should i plant the hybrid willows..i just dont want it that when this trees grow and expand that their branches end up in my neighboors property, what do you consider a safe distance?
Hi. I am so excited! I just received an order of 10. I've got them in water now. The neighbor behind me, sold her land and a business came in and decimated the tree line view, took them All!! I'm so mad. I can see the interstate from my back yard now, no privacy!!! My biggest question and concern is, do I need to worry about these guys attacking my septic/water lines? If so, should I plant these in containers?? I'd like the height and fullness...
I just ordered mine and was wondering if these can be planted in vermiculite & or perlite? I also could use regular potting soil in the mix if you think it’s better for them? Thanks !
@@charliemagoo7943 Cool I got 24 cuttings they got here Feb 1st . I got them in water straight away sprouted in 9 days got them all i put them in coke bottle planters in my windows and a few in a coldframe. All are doing really well. I got some of the hybrid populars coming now
@@johnnyfoo8737 just don't put fertilizer on them. If you think they need nutrients put some dirt in a sock and let the sock soak a day in a bucket of water. Water them with that tea
This was so helpful! Thank you so much!

Welcome!
Great video! If I want to lop off the top as you described, should I do that in the winter?

where we live we trim and stick in ground. 80% grow rate
At what distance can I plant the trees? I have 10 I want to fence.

How far from a french drain can I plant these?
great video, but not very many questions answered, that's where we get more info.
What questions do you have?
We watered ours for over 3 months, only 1 has made it, i guess thats not good for $12 worth of them we planted

if it was lost for too long you can file a claim through usps just use your tracking number. Thanks
When I plant them do I need to use a certain kind of soil or just use the one it’s getting planted with
just use normal soil no fertilizer and you can plant at any time after its done freezing

sorry for the delay we recommend about 5' from the fence line.
Did all those steps and never got the roots to go
How can I order a 10 pk?
Will composted dirt be good to plant with?
yes as long as it doesn't have fertilizers
I seriously want to do this how do I know what zone I'm in Kansas 66002. Cannot wait to get started 😁

regular potting soil without fertilizer is always best!
Can I just get dirt from outside?
Yes regular garden dirt works great
will the austree survive an oklahoma winter?
Even last winter in Oklahoma.
