I have been wanting to make this bag for a long time! I did not practice first but I still think it turned out great and will be so useful. Sometimes the key is to just make the bag and start using it! I have been using my own bags at the store for a awhile- years! I love it because...
    1) It's better to not use all those single use plastic bags. UGH to so much plastic in our lives!
    2) I love not having all those bags around my house- yes, I recycle them but even better not to even have them in the first place.
    3) I love having my pretty bags to fill instead of ugly plastic ones! YAY!
Here are the measurements and materials needed...
1/2 yard cotton (or your choice of non stretch material) for lining
    1 yard stabilizer- I used Pellon 40~
    amzn.to/2NYc2tr
3/4 yard cotton for exterior. I used laminated cotton like this~ www.etsy.com/m...
    1 yard insulbrite batting~
    amzn.to/2GmQt1F
    40'' webbing. I used black~
    amzn.to/37qRFgv
7'' of 1'' hook & loop (velcro) sew on type- I got mine at walmart or Joanns
    Measurements including 1/4'' seam allowance~
    11.5'' x 10.5'' front and back pieces
    8.5'' x 10.5'' side pieces (2)
    11.5'' x 8.5'' base piece
    11.5'' x 11.5'' lid/ top- use 1/2'' seam allowance on this piece
Cut 40'' handle in half to make two 20'' pieces
Here are some links to the products I use that you can purchase on amazon...
    -My favorite seam ripper! amzn.to/2IIyd1K
    -Clips I use! amzn.to/37pxrn6

-the self healing mat with grid! amzn.to/2Ihj5MZ

Great timing. I have several similar bags that I use about 5 times a week for 30 years.
I highly recommend having two bags that nest for super insulation. Add pre-frozen freezer packs and you are all set.
I would strongly recommend a couple changes to this design.
For insulation, you want no openings nor gaps once it is closed, so side flaps with velcro are a definite need.
Also, adding a way to put in silver bubble wrap home insulation would drastically increase the amount of cooling time and low temperature for this bag.
I would also do a lot of reinforcing of corners, seams and closures due to the weight (20 lbs +) such bags carry.
I really use a full body strap on my bags 90 percent of the time.
My bags are all plastic and wipe well, so we will have to see how washable cotton stands up in comparison.
I am grateful you took the time to create this and am already formulating variations such as an insulated cover for portable animal cages.

Perfect timing! My youngest son just got his own place. Where he shops for his groceries, requires you to bring your own bags (or pay 30 cents each for a wimpy plastic one). I’ve made a few reusable totes out of canvas. And crocheted him mesh produce bags. However he really needed this for his cold items. Thanks so much! Now to find suitable fabric for the exterior.

I have been searching for an easy insulated bag pattern and I love this one. Since my cold and frozen goods sometimes needs to travel for about an hour I think I will extend the side panels up so they can be folded over the cold things. This is a really great idea and I love that it's a bigger size than what I've been seeing. Thank you!

wonderful! I like my bag to be able to hold boxes and ice cream cartons :). I am so glad this one is going to work for you!

Instead of Fray check just burn the edges of the webbing. It melts it. I just use my fire starter. You could use a Bic lighter or a match. I was afraid the first time I did it but it just does the edges. Don’t touch it right away because it will be very hot.

Love it! I think I’ll use PUL fabric for lining. It stays soft and it’s waterproof. I also wonder how it’d be with plastic canvas for the insides?

So nice but I would love to have seen a zipper all the way around as it's not air tight. Could it have been added after assembly?

hmmm. It certainly could! I need mine to have a little more flexibility so I left the zipper off. But it would be nice with one too!
