We are treated to landscapes with no man-made anything as far as the eye can see. The Symphony of the Flint Hills non-profit organization puts on this event at a different location annually. The event includes transporting guests in horse-drawn covered wagons and people movers, a meal, educational presentations, a symphony concert and some dancing afterwards.
Joe interviews many of the organizers:
Jim Hoy, Folklorist and Rancher - discusses the history of the Tall Grass Prairie and its settlers. He explains why this prairie was saved from cultivation by the large amount of limestone in the area preventing use of plows and the interest of cattle ranchers in the grasslands for grazing. From late April-Mid July, this land is used for grazing, allowing steers to gain from 3-3 1/2 pounds of weight on by eating only the native grasses. This has occurred from as long ago as 1868.
Beth Harshfield, Board Chairperson of Symphony in the Flint Hills - discusses the history of the event. It has been sold out every year since its first year. It is held at a different location every year.
LInda Craghead, Site Committee member - discusses what is involved in choosing the site including setting, natural amphitheater, views, sun, wind and rain directions and more.
Christy Davis, Executive Director - explains that the music is site specific each year based on "place based" education incorporating the history of the specific site into the educational programs as well as in choosing the music. She explains that there is an educational program each year put on by experts in their field. They share information about this threatened landscape.
Davis also talks about the other programming they hold during the year, especially the Joyful Noise music camp and concert held every summer with the Camp Wood YMCA that brings in musicians from around the country to educate families on musical instruments culminating in an twilight concert on the prairie.
Aram Demirijian, Associate Conductor of the Kansas City Symphony - says a few words to the audience in his first year conducting this event.
Brian Obermeyer, Director, Flint Hills Initiative for the Nature Conservancy - shares information about tall grass prairies, their history and importance. Flint Hills makes up 50% of the remaining contiguous tall grass prairie in North America.
Sam Brownback, Kansas Governor - introduces the concert
