Probably a bigger reason they folded axes back in the day was because huge chunks were rarer and harder to make. Today, we can find a chunk at the scrap yard, back then, there weren't as many. So blacksmiths would use what they had to make what they needed, oftentimes using a iron wagon tire for a folded axe.
