With Gordon, England should forget about winning any tiurnament. Foden is an elite player, and in those tight games later on in the tournament, you need him. Bellingham should be deeper and if not.. they should allow Harry Kane to drop off and vacate the space so Bellingham can run in there. Jude has a good engine but it's mad to build team around him as a number 10. He makes too many players redundant

He still played left wing for Messi because you don’t limit Messi to play Di Maria at his best. Di Maria adapted to that. Foden has to adapt to someone better than him. Let Foden and Kane play they're usual role and Bellingham can play box-to-box and make those last minute runs he is known for.. Him and Rice can do this role and take it in turns depending on the situation on the pitch.

City play completely different. Trippier doesn’t maraud forward like Cancelo used to do when Foden played there. Foden has been even better in the 10 though.

Ancheloti is the best because he had Ac milan that had the same issue and created the diamond formation to accommodate Kaka and Seedorf. Why can't England do that instead of playing players out of thier positions.

I always wondered why England didn't play the diamond back in the Golden Generation days because that's the only formation where you could get Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard playing centrally. If Beckham was in then Gerrard would be the holder but that would still have been better than putting these guys on the flank IMHO.
A Christmas tree formation (4-3-2-1) is the only formation that might have been better in that situation but that meant dropping one of the forwards. Rooney was better up top alone than Owen.
The full backs would have a lot to do in the diamond. Cole and Neville weren't ideal for that system but that's the challenge finding the best system for the best players.
Because Ancelotti is one of the best coaches in the world and Southgate is not.

Call me old fashioned but what’s wrong with having two proper strikers up front like the old days so they can work together I would have toney and Watkins with foden behind Gordon on the left palmer on the right with rice and Bellingham in the middle and use Kane as a impact sub as my nan is quicker than him use the wide players to whip first time crosses in or even a cross would nice instead on this short tippy tappy passing on the floor which gets us nowhere then ends up all the way pack to the keeper.our players have no confidence to turn and beat a player and create quick passing football they stand on the ball and pass back.i have watched most of the games and most of the other nations play quick tempo football with the ball hit from one side to the other or down the wings crossing in to the boxes creating chances also hitting shots from outside of the box. we do not do that we want to walk the ball in to the net this style of football has been drummed into them for the last 8 years I think they don’t know how to play any different it’s like they have been brainwashed by Southgate I reckon Pickford has more touches than the rest of the keepers. if Kane is up front on his own then he needs balls whipped across the box not balls passed around the side of the area looking in for a way in to the box only for the ball to be sent all the way back to the keeper
Foden needs to deliver when he gets time, you can't keep blaming on Southgate or positions, when he gets the ball he needs to make things happen its simple as that, no more excuses by everyone! Foden whereever he plays he has to do the job and do it well! The player needs to stand up to challenges!

I think the inability to maximize veryone's potential is basically tactical and man management. theoretically, if you make the perfect touch, use the correct techniques, and make the right decisions, everyone can shine in the team. They just need to be team players rather than individuals. in other words, in every game, jude, foden, etc. just need to perfectly string the perfect passes and movements at the right tempo, and shoot hard and accurate enough, and everyone's happy.
Arsenal with rice and saka weren't up to the task when Arsenal were knock out of Europe last season.
Just play Jude deeper.. which is where he’s going to end up next year at RM. He played as a 10/false 9 because they didn’t have a star striker. Mbappe and Vini jr will be doing that, with Rodrygo too. Jude is gonna be an 8 who comes from deep to score goals, just like Lampard.
Without Shaw on the pitch, you can easily argue 'Go three at the back, play two up front, have two proper wingers/WAMs, Two B2Bs and one holding the fort.' That's the only way I can see fitting both Foden and Bellingham into the same side. Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi; Saka, Bellingham, Rice, Foden, Eze; Kane, Watkins.
Finally some words of wisdom. Barnes knows better than most as England never saw the best of him. If you play Jude deeper then Foden may be effective. Should England beat or draw with Denmark then for the last game play Gordon; Foden and Saka behind Kane or even Watkins. What may help Foden is a player like Watkins making runs in the channels freeing space up. But come on Southgate aint Pep.

Foden still wasn't good as a 10. people just need to understand that these system players are average when they don't have the system and other players to do dirty work. Foden in Man City system got no responsibility. he get no blame and no pressure. people like Rashford carried his team and blame. Greanlish carried Villa.
Bellingham and Foden linked up well first 30 mins or so. Played a lot of one two’s, they’ll get better as tournament progresses.

John Barnes spot on. We rarely saw the best of John Barnes or Glenn Hoddle for England for the same reasons we are not seeing the best of Phil Foden. The current England team is built around Jude Bellingham (rightly so!!!) and back in the day, the England team were likewise built around Paul Gascoigne. That is the reason we got to see the best of Gazza in and England shirt.
Both players like to take up the same space, which does not work. Play Bellingham as 10 and leave Foden on the bench. Play a wide man left and bring back Shaw as soon as he is fit.

Personally think we shouldn’t be playing Kane. He doesn’t offer anything else besides a tap in, need a player almost like Havertz who acts as a pivot for the whole team and can make darting runs

Why the hell should Jude take a back seat to accommodate Foden? For 4yrs Foden had many chances and blee them all. He was playing the central against Iceland whilst Jude was resting after the CL and he did nothing. What does that say?!?
Foden has NEVER brought it for England either on the left or in the middle. The team needs penetration down the left so put a proper winger there. Also Rice needs a strong DM next to him so that he can go forward so no Trent for me.

I agree with Barnes. Foden has been played in all foward positions by Pep and has excelled in all of them. We saw him play as a 10 against Iceland and he still struggled regardless. Based on the system Southgate plays Foden will not thrive henceforth he has to bench
We have to supply Harry Kane that's ALL that matters. Playing Bellingham too deep would be moronic too. Having Harry with 3 touches all game is a bad sign. We need pace and width and supply. Or we go home
It's simple Gareth. Players in their strongest position. Bellingham with Rice in middle. Foden in #10 and Gordon/Eze on the left. At least try it for 30 mins!

Bellingham is the Rolls-Royce and the spine of the team. You build a formation that is around him, not Phil Foden.

I think he'll grow with the tournament and he'll deliver at a critical point,he's good talent,he's got goals in his boots, he's just lacking Jude's condidence,he needs the gaffers support. English are very impatient, maybe it is due to them not winning anything in decades
The solution is so clear, drop Foden to the bench, try Gordon or Eze out on the left wing. Bring Foden on in the second half if Saka or Bellingham need to come off. Bellingham now has the number 10 spot locked down.

Don't aree with this, but they need to be balanced off, Grealish was the man to do it, okay we'd be a bit narrow, but he'd play in the pockets behind Foden and Bellingham is all action he would run the show from no 8. Once Shaw is fit he'd offer width.
This is all on Southgate, having to direct wingers from either side is not the way to go if you wanna control games going forward an defend.. play Foden in a 4 3 3 an you'll find the balance!
Quite simple really you need to bench him and use him as a impact player the chances are we will go extra time if we get later on in tournament who better to bring on in the 90th + minute
