    One of the things that really hit me about Kenshin's story in the present was how his past as an assassin was only ever alluded to, never discussed in explicit detail. It was clear from the start that Kenshin is not happy or proud of the things he's done. I got the impression from his infamy that Kenshin was a notch or two below a full-blown serial killer. This was my imagination running away from me more than anything. When I found out about the "Trust and Betrayal" OVA about his days as an assassin, I had to watch it.
    What I learned from "Trust and Betrayal" wasn't so much that Kenshin was ashamed of what he did, though he was deeply remorseful, but that Kenshin's life up to the main story of the manga and anime was one of tragedy and violence, with his only caretakers being viciously murdered. The truth of Kenshin's past isn't that he did any one thing, or even multiple things, that crossed a line in his mind. Rather, he came to realize that despite his beliefs that things needed to change, his skills were used for political ends and he was used to further an agenda more than anything. Coinciding with that, he fell in love but also realized that love was linked to an act of violence he committed, so realizing the human cost of his actions.
    Kenshin is a traumatized war veteran, similar to our modern day veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. The biggest hurdle he has to overcome in his arc is forgiving himself, because he has the opportunity to live a happy and peaceful life that keeps getting interrupted by continued civil unrest and violence. Adding salt to the wound, it becomes clear that the cause Kenshin fought for turned out to be as bad, or possibly worse, than the system he fought against to begin with.

    • @davidcarty7584
      @davidcarty7584 2 месяца назад

      Everything you said in this comment was facts, but I also need to add that kenshin being used to further a political agenda was something his master tried to stop from happening, he forbid kenshin from getting involved with The revolution because he knew what was going to happen and only after kenshin went through so much pain, and suffering, that's when he realized The error he had committed because his master was right, he was nothing but just a foolish boy

  • @NicNico

    This analysis is really thoughtful. There's just one problem: Himura Kenshin was never considered a samurai. He was born of slain peasants and adopted by a ronin. His name is even a kind of farce since he didn't really inherit it (his given name was Shinta and his surname was unknown). His role as hitokiri absolved him from any duties expected of samurai, but also meant that he was unlanded (not an owner of property) and he had no status aside from the notoriety he gained from his skills. All of these factors played a significant role in his character development and the message Watsuki Nobuhiro was trying to convey.

    • @PleasantLeech
      @PleasantLeech 5 лет назад +20

      I think that only makes the message stronger. His iron code wasn't formed by his blood but by the way he was raised and the choices he made.

    Imagine all the npcs you can interact with and people you can help or not along the way. Choose the path of good wanderer or sellsword murderer.
    Kenshin can make choices that either lead him on the path of redemption or the path of battousai that each have its own buffs, techniques, and attribute boosts.

      @benjamin ramsey yeah I heard about watsuki aswell but to be honest I couldn't care. Like you said it does not change my opinion. And I'm more disappointed in the fact that when they arrested watsuki he was in the makings of writing a new arc to the rk anime. I think he still is so we should have another rk arc to watch in a year or so hopefully.

    I'd love to see a comparative video between Rurouni Kenshin and Samurai Champloo, since they both deal with samurai living in an age where they are no longer needed, and focus on characters who can't or don't want to leave that life behind. Jin seems to align relatively with Kenshin, while Kariya seems to resound more with Shishio.

    so im writing a manga,i know a lot of you dont care but i still feel like i need to tell you guys,it is in script format right now and it has 80 pages wort of script,not done yet tho,its going to be called Crimson Heir and it is inspired by Berserk and HxH,if you like any of those 2 you will most likely like this one aswell since it has the tone and feel simular to berserk with the world building and power system not as good but pritty good compered to HxHs nen,its going to be an Action,adventure,vampires,demons,seinen, with some HP love craft sprinkled for the mix,im hoping i will do chapter 1 soon and mabe you can do a video about it some day hehe,but at any rate thanks for reading this,my intention when writing Crimson Heir was to make something that will saticfy Berserk and HxH fans and to fill the hole left from those 2 series,i will not let these series down,thanks for reading.

    great video you guys are nailing the subject matter as always a cool and interesting topic to both cover and watch the only problem I see is the fact the the term Rurouni is reserved specifically for swordsman who never served a master and never did so I find it interesting to hear you describe Kenshin is the last of the samurai despite him being mostly opposed to everything they were and represent but that is neither here nor there this is still a great video that I enjoyed watching cause I love the anime and I hope you guys end up doing more

    I thought the ideas in this video which cover the purpose of samurai was never really relevant to the battle that Shishio and Kenshin have (especially considering that neither were ever samurai lol), though I think your points about Kenshin and Shishio's, Christ and Lucifer like dynamic was interesting, and that final interpretation of Shishio's burning was something I'd really like to look more into.

    Ok one correction. Kenshin and Shishio weren't samurai. They were ronin who were serving the Meiji Ishin Shishi against the Shogunate. Hajime Saito and the Shinsengumi whom Kenshin and Shishio fought were more like samurai.

    I still don't understand why the final arc was never animated. That Kyoto Reanimation project was bull that we didn't need. They should've just taken the opportunity to animate the final arc that we got screwed on. A lot of people thought that maybe if the live action movies were successful enough & brought in enough revenue that maybe they would finally animate it, but so far no luck :(
