Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

The CCTV footage on Ruby road was filmed by a camera 66 metres away. I find it interesting that 73 yards happens to be 66.75 metres.
Ruby's mother in the projection is described by the doctor as being blurred, or out of focus, or something to that effect. Sounds very familiar...
Just throwing that out there, since I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it.

I applaud RTD for this spiritual successor to "Pyramids of Mars". That's one of my favorite stories from the Tom Baker era for several reasons: first, because I have always been interested in Egyptology; second, because I love gothic horror; and third because Sutek frightened the Doctor - this is a major reason why the villian of the piece made me fully understand wanting to hide behind the couch (and I first saw this story toward the end of my teens). Much of that was thanks to Gabrlel Wolf and his calm, smooth, patient voice. That simply amplified that character's evil. It was good to hear Gabriel Wolf's voice again (just as it was in "The Impossible Planet" / "The Satan Pit"), and he still has that gift of providing spinechills. I have a feeling that "Empire of Death" will not dissapoint.

I have the complete sarah jane adventures box set where one of the cds has the complete story of pyramids of mars as a tribute to Elizabeth Sladen (R.I.P.) on it. I was kind of dissappointed sadly, because the story felt veeeery stretched out. I'm also usually a new who watcher so I'm used to bigger and more exciting visuals and costumes.
I did like this new episode though, even though the whole episode was kind of just a teaser for the actual final episode next week. It definetley gave Sutekh the mystery and dark power that the original story kind of lacked a little bit for me.

    Loving your excitement, Tharries :)
For what it's worth, I haven't watched Pyramids of Mars yet (though I do know about it, generally speaking), and the twist still very much worked for me. The Doctor's reaction and the reveal itself worked really well even if you know nothing about Sutekh imo.
I thought the episode was insane, like, in a great way. There was SO MUCH to unpack in it, that I'm still recovering and processing everything. I really enjoyed it, and it felt like a very classic-RTD finale. His part 1's are always amazing though, tying in so many loose threads and theories (I feel like every single Susan Twist theory I've heard of was mentioned in one way or another lol).. As you've said, I just hope he can land the second part next week as well, cause the set up has been really great so far.
I did feel like there was a bit of an overabundance of characters. Like, take Rose for example - I agree with you, she didn't do much. As much as I love her and glad she was brought back (I'm a trans person myself, so very glad for the representation; and I loved her befriending Ruby, making Carla want to join, and mentioning Donna and 14), I felt like she was very much out of place and under-utilised here. When we saw her in the trailers, I was waiting to find out why she was even in UNIT to begin with, and there was just... No explanation for it. That's a pretty small gripe tho, all things considered. I did enjoy her presence anyway, and liked all the small character moments we did get. I thought Kate in particular was amazing in this episode, Mel was good and actually had something to do for a change haha, and Morris was also a great addition.
Oh and yeah, I'm also confused about the bit where the Doctor implied that he hadn't had kids yet - Cause, well, RTD1 era established that the Doctor was already a dad.. And even this season we've had mentions of him being one (it was an entire plot point in Boom), so that was a bit odd imo. Also, Kate claiming she had no idea about him having a granddaughter when Susan's photo was literally in the Black Archive in Day of the Doctor.. Though, it is the Black Archive, so I suppose maybe she forgot lol.

I'm calling it right now. Ruby is the first incarnation of Susan. Her mother is Mrs Flood, who is therefore the Doctor's daughter.
They established in this episode that the Doctor doesn't know who Susan's parents are, saying it's something he'll find out in the future. And coincidentally, we also don't know who Ruby's parents are. So what if Ruby and Susan are the same person, just different incarnations. Ruby would have to be the first, since we've seen her as a baby, and Susan a future one. Timey-wimey.

  • @Pooter-it4yg
    @Pooter-it4yg 7 месяцев назад +2

I felt the build up plodded and - although it'll inevitably prove important later - the high tech examination of the VHS tape really dragged. But there's got to be some kind of modern version of somehow banishing Sutekh in time since he's too powerful to be destroyed - as before. Or perhaps Horus, Isis and co are going to put in an appearance this time...
My main problem with this is that in the Who universe Sutekh is not a god but a very powerful alien mistaken for one. Maybe there has always been an actual "devil" behind every imagining and this is it, but it manifests as the specific jackal headed Egyptian mistaken identity version. I'd say that doesn't work too well when completely divorced from the ancient Egyptian reference point.
I also find the wordplay a bit silly - "Sue Tech"... Personally, I'd seen the possibility but dismissed it as too silly - that'll teach me about the level the show is going for. Oh no, an evil Roman emperor is returning and everyone seems to be rowing boats on their knees - gasp "knee row"...
From a characterisation point of view I find the Doctor and co constantly hugging and jumping up and down in delight a bit much too. But again, I suppose it's a matter of level again. I've always preferred the Doctor to be a bit childlike but not childish.

Has the whole Roswell incident scene been cut - the whole adventure with the Doctor wearing a whistle etc?
What’s been waiting at UNIT since the time of the Third Doctor?
And how does the Tales Of The TARDIS episode fit in, I presumed that would be the cliffhanger.

My personal guess is it entered into this universe and latched onto the tardis at the edge of the universe. Perhaps its been feeding on the Tardis power to gain a more corporeal or stronger form in this dimension. As to how rubys storyline relates I have no idea. I dont think her mom/the hooded figure is a villain- I think she was perhaps trying to warn the doctor of the thing surround the tardis, which she could see, implying she and perhaps ruby are special for their own reasons.

The stakes escalate constantly and exponentially, it keeps getting worse and worse, and then just after half way we find out who Ruby's mum (and maybe dad) is, and she turns out to be the daughter of a god, or a god and a time lord, and she can access godlike powers, and she just basically makes all the bad stuff unhappen while the Murray Gold score tried to trick the audience into thinking that something well-written is happening instead.

speaking as someone who only started with 2005 Who, the way they built up The Master hit hard despite prior to seeing that, not knowing who The Master was. great execution there. same can be said for Sutekh and how they built him up in this episode and season overall. I've been since researching the backstory and I'm only getting more and more excited. did the same for The Master and any other classic who figure they bring back. say what you will about RTD but this guy understands the "feeling" of doctor who and never fails to deliver on that feeling. Shot in the dark Theory Ruby is Susan the doctors granddaughter her mother is Jenny (the clone from doctors daughter) who is also Ruby's neighbor. Like Donna passing the time lord stuff to Rose. The timeless child is/was apart of the Pantheon. The doctor passed a part of the timeless child to Jenny and then to Rose which will explain the snow that appears around her.
Reasoning 1. Susan was in one of 14th doctors specials (crappy reasoning I know).
    2. In this episode the doctor said Susan is from a kid the doctor has not had yet or he does not know yet this works with Jenny because he from what I know still thinks she is dead
    3. The reasoning for the timeless child being apart of the Pantheon in some and it being passed down in some way is because on another video someone mentioned that besides the neighbor only other characters to break the 4th wall are some of the Pantheon and the doctor (funny enough the 4th doctor broke the 4th wall) she could just be another Pantheon like the trickster but I want to stretch this crack pot theory out.
I know this theory is out there but if by chance I'm right I want proof of it

I cant help but think Mrs Flood might be a hold over for series 15 rather than wrap up her story plus Ruby and deal with Sutekh.
Been a bit unsure of the series so far apart from 73 Yards, I haven't been really feeling it but this episode has given me that Doctor Who buzz again!

I just realized Ruby could be the doctors daughter! Then ms flood could be Susan living next door to her mother as a youngster the way River went to befriend her parents younger versions

I really thought they were going to tell us who Ruby / her mom is in this one. Guess we'll have to wait until next week. Another thing, Ms Flood is going to be joining then in the next season, so I wonder how that all plays into things from this episode.

The end reveal was near perfection.
Second tardis appears in the time window and the tardis growled in wild blue wonder. Wonder if this is where the tardis ended up with sutekh?
The tardis was also doubled in the giggle. Double sutekh? Hmmm

Im convinced ruby is susan, and she's the daughter of georgia tennant's character in the 4th season (the doctors daughter).
When the doctor told susan still hadnt been born, that was the hint.
The cloaked woman is georgia tennant.

You asked how casual fans would react, but I have a different take: I've been a *huge* Doctor Who fan since before Tharries was born, but like most fans, I've spent more time reading Wikipedia entries on certain classic stories then watching them (although I've still seen a ton of them), so when Sutekh's name came up, it was incredibly underwhelming because I assumed it was some new creature, particularly because of his new form (a giant CGI dog). I just guessed that if it were an existing adversary, it would have had to have previously been a 12' puppet, which seemed unlikely (although obviously characters have changed form before, it's just the first impression).
The tension and build up across the whole episode was wonderful, l loved seeing Rose Noble and Mel again, but the payoff was non-existent for me sadly. Still looking forward to next week (and the Tales episode in-between of course), but I wish RTD had provided *any* context to this character that didn't require having seen a single 50-year-old serial, like he'd previously done an excellent job with the Master and the Daleks and even the Toymaker when he reintroduced those villians.
Just a confusing cliffhanger that sidestepped all the good questions of the season for a reveal that didn't mean anything because we aren't going to know what the stakes really are until next week.

So, the Doctor may have had a grandchild before having a child. Therefore, there may be a daughter that 15 wouldn't recognize. Could it be Mrs. Flood? And could she be named for her mother? Melody POND, RIVER Song, Mrs. FLOOD?!? And perhaps her first name is Harmony or something similarly musical?

I'm tickled by how the Toymaker, Sutekh, the Mara, the Trickster and Maestro are all family. You can bet on having a scene, where all of these characters are on camera together, expressing nothing but contempt towards each other. I still think RTD, will have the Doctor recruit the
Guardians, or the Eternals, to help combat Sutekh and his ilk. If not other gods, he'll probably invoke his more traditional enemies, like the Daleks, Cybermen and the Timelords, which would probably include the Master.

    Regarding Mrs. Flood . . .
I think she is a normal woman when we first meet her. Just Ruby's neighbour. She sees the TARDIS dematerialise when it goes back to 2004, and is bewildered.
While it is in 2004, by the church, Sutekh attaches himself to it, as implied by the time-window scene.
Oblivious, the Doctor then takes it back to Ruby's street and rushes into the house. Mrs. Flood is waiting outside. The TARDIS knows it has been infected with a hostile presence, and pours itself into the nearest living thing.
Mrs. Flood is a back-up copy. Or a vessel where the TARDIS can sit safely and wait. She's a lifeboat, or an ark (to protect It from the "flood"). That's why, at the end of the first episode, she knows what a TARDIS is, when earlier, she didn't. So when she says, "Never seen a TARDIS before", she's talking about herself.
