  • following the recent announcement of the new action figures for Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday, as played by Millie Gibson, I take a little look at them. There's quite a lot to say, these figures have a lot of new stuff to cover.

Looking at the figure, I'd say there are still some kinks to be worked out with the articulation. The pinless knees (they're not ball jointed, there's a peg attached to the hinge which goes up into the thigh and that's where you get your swivel) look nice but the range is far less than on the old figures, there must be a way of improving that. A forward-facing pin going into the feet is a much better way of doing ankle articulation and doesn't result in them popping off as you describe (and I have that Sontaran figure so I know what you mean). And then there's the head. I haven't gotten one in hand but looking at it, they appear to have sculpted too much of the back of his head, with the effect that it runs into the neck very quickly when trying to get him to look up. They need to shave a few mm away from there and it'll be much more functional.
All that said, it's fairly standard for companies to have kinks to work out when they are trying out new articulation and I really like the solution they found for the torso articulation which looks just as functional AND better looking than the traditional ab crunch or diaphragm cut that other companies use because it allows them to hide it much more easily. I'm tentatively pleased with the kind of changes they're making to articulation and the paint and sculpt look like a big step up too. Can't wait to get them in hand!

Thanks for your comment, this is really insightful, I think you know a lot more about how these figure articulation works on a technical level than I do. Some very interesting information in there. I hadn't noticed that the knees don't bend as far back as the older style ones did, but you're right, it's not a big difference but it is noticable if I'm looking for it. the head articulation is fairly minimal, they can't look sort of dramatically up. But yeah, I incorrectly call the knees and elbows ball-jointed, I think in my more limited understanding joints that swivel and bend must be that, but it sounds like there's more complex stuff that I don't know about. I hope you enjoy the figures when you get them, I'm really happy with mine.

@@ohmydinosare No probs, I've been collecting figures for years so have picked up some pointers on how the engineering works during that time. The figures look great, I have my pre-order in so hoping they'll show up any day!

After watching your video I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the detailing on the figures, I hope we can expect to see some other Doctors & Companions in this line honestly they're exciting and fresh, I'd say they're almost on par with what Hasbro puts out for half the price. I hope in the future we can get an updated 14th Doctor while fabulous I feel his face/head needs revisiting and better detailing! fab video keep up the great work!

I'd love to see them do other doctors like this, though I have no idea if they will, david tennant in both his forms could really use an improved figure, the 14th doctor figure is lovely to have but the face is lost a little under the paint, and the original 10th doctor head is very overplayed at this point (a shame they didn't make more use of some of his other heads, there was an impossible planet version in the orange spacesuit with a one-off head with a choppier fringe, that was only on some then they changed it to the standard head, I'd have loved to see that head on the suit body, black shoes, greyish green shirt, that would have been nice)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for stopping by! ☺

Speaking as someone who has only in the last few months decided to collect figures of all the modern era Doctors and companions (including a custom-made Rose whose head fell off and I had to glue it back on and a Bill whose head stayed on) I very much approve of Ncuti and Millie figures finally

It's great to be able to have everyone again, I was collecting way back when the range started in 2005, I remember being really excited when they went back and did a single release neutral pose version of the ninth doctor, because I thought I'd never be able to get a figure of him. Now, all these years later, I have a figure of every doctor, from Hartnell to Gatwa. I didn't have the whole gang until 2011 when I got the eleven doctor set, and since then every time there's a new doctor I'm really worried until they announce the figure in case there isn't one and I can't update the lineup. So yeah, super glad to have it complete again. I have at least one figure of every companion who's had a figure made of them, except Mickey, I wasn't able to get one at the time, and I'm not just so sure I really want one now.

They're definitely nice things to have. I think even if I didn't collect the range like I do I would still have an interest to at least have one figure of each doctor. I mean as it is I have many many figures of each doctor, but if I didn't and I was aiming to have just one of each, this would be the version of Ncuti I'd want, it feels like the closest he has to a definitive outfit, as much as a doctor who completely changes his wardrobe every episode can have a definitive look.

Millie Gibson was the only light in this RTD2 show going by the name of Dr Who. I will gladly pay £20 for her figure.
