I liked all of the Fourth Doctor's costumes all the same as it is one of the most iconic looks in all science fiction. I will add the season 18 outfit does have a very regal quality to it giving the Doctor a very noble, authoritarian persona as if he's walked around the cosmos a few times.
I feel one of my favorite things about the outfits of the Fourth Doctor is that while there are intricate layers, the outfit is accessible. It fits with the time it was produced, and works extremely well today. My favorite outfits are between the first burgundy and the season 12 outfit. While my reasons for not liking the season 18 outfit are for the more streamlined appearance (I'm the same way with Kon-El Superboy's second costume,) upon knitting the scarf, I came to fall in love with the details in knitting it just as much as the colorful scarf.
Honestly, getting into the nitty gritty of creativity is more than enough to increase one’s appreciation of anything, and the many months of putting together my own version certainly made me love it! You’re right!
Had state of decay bern made in season 15 as planned the S18 coat is so iconic I think only the Pyramids of Mars - Deadly assassin coat could have worked and Leela instead of Romana would have had to have worn her horror of fang rock clothes And yes I agree with all you say
The season 13/15 suit is the one that stood out to me, it was lived in, but the similarity of the Grey Tweed made it look smart, almost like a subliminal Uniform.
love the 18th season burgundy outfit. Excellent scarf copy you did too. Brilliant. When i first saw the burgundy outfit i hated it, but it stayed with me and now i love it. JNT said that as Tom was getting older, and greyer, it seemed fitting to give him an older statesman, regal, understated version of the outfit, that also went better with his age. Just another thing, i believe i read somewhere that the width of the scarf didn't change much its just that Tom suddenly got it into his head to wear it wider and try it out in the expanded draped look, which i personally think was a failure. he would get notions he would want to try and was constantly suggesting different ways of doing different things.
Not gonna lie Dom, nearly squealed with delight when this came up in my notifications. 😅 As you probably know, Tom is my second favourite Doctor behind Matt. So to see you do a ranking for Tom is something I can't thank you enough for. 😊

Yes I know he wore a number of different jackets and coats in a range of different colours during his time as the Fourth Doctor. But my go to colour for cosplay is a red jacket plus a thirteen foot long scarf! By the way I liked the look of that ensemble you put together to cosplay his final season outfit!

Between Pertwee and Tom. They are the Doctor’s with multiple outfits. Overall, to see Tom with no ties or cravat look very undignified. Then again, a lot of Doctors no longer wear bow ties, ties, cravat etc let alone collared shirts(all started with Eccleston). Hell we get to see the Doctor wear graphic tees which is being the norm. The 15th will be wearing biker jackets and kilts. Overall, Tom’s very first Safari Burgandy Jacket until his 80s JNT era finale outfit with the ? Is my favorite.
what do you think of historical cosplayers who take elements of doctor who and harry potter (occassionally star wars and star trek) and turn them into historical clothes (but keep the science fiction or fantasy colour schemes) and if you were cosplaying ancient rome, which Tom Baker look would choose.
I am very pleased to say that I put together most of the burgundy 18th season outfit with a 22-foot scarf for next Halloween. I've been longing to do a different Doctor Who outfit, and it looks very good so far. I wish I could show you what it looks like, but there's no way to show pictures here. I don't have the "?' mark shirt yet but will be very soon. Next Halloween will be an exciting one for me.
Tom's Season 18 clobber is my fave, not keen on the version destroyed in part 4 of Nightmare Of Eden" - I remember cheering when it got torn to pieces! - You never mentioned Peter Davison's regenerating boots.....

Who Chaser there are a few I would agree with, particularly the burgundy velvet coat, that’s high up on my list, I do love the plumb ensemble, but for me it is the most contrived and most ‘costumey’, however much I adore it. My favourite though has got to be his beige coat with the chocolate piping, with the four skirt pockets. It’s his smartest attire pre-plumb! I had a version made for me in teal, but unfortunately too much miscommunication and tension between me and it’s creator ended in it being not what I asked for and not well fitted, so that was the end of that. I’m still happy with my brown velvet Masque of Mandragora coat though.

I love the first outfit the most from his first day as Doctor Who. Then the next outfit he wore with the plaid waistcoat. But kept the reddish jacket
