I love these trivial scenes of the Doctor exploring a few ideas of clothing before finding their official look. Each Doctor that has done a dress up scene has done it differently to make things unique for their "post regeneration" story.
The post-regeneration "befuddlement" is key to the transition from one Doctor to the next, as they spout a few bits of the "old" before they move on to the "new"...
The way he says "Don't you like them?" when the brigadier isn't thrilled with his outfits is so cute. He just wants Gordon's approval....
The brand new 4th Doc was like a little kid. The best and the funniest Doctor ever! 😄

@@TIME_LORDS Brigadier General Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, of the United Nations Intelligence Task Force. A fine soldier and the best man the Doctor ever knew.
His charisma just shines on-screen. Capaldi reminds me so much of him.

Capaldi is my absolute favourite, and he was definitely heavily inspired by the old-school doctors!
Capaldi reminds me more of my favourite Doctor, Jon Pertwee.

The power of old doctor who.
When one stops to consider, we can thank the Brigadier for the Doctor's iconic wardrobe. I mean, the Doctor was willing to try yet again and the Brig was of the opinion, "Good enough." It does make one wonder what else the Doctor might have tried. As each successive outfit was less outlandish, he might have worked his way "down" to a contemporary business suit. Let's thank the Brigadier stopping the Doctor when he did!
In the novelisation, Terrance Dicks has the Brig speculating that the Doctor will emerge wearing a suit of chainmail next...
1:03 it’s hilarious how excited and then dejected the Doctor was with the clown costume. Like he really hoped this was the one.
Robot is such a joy. Tom really leaps into the role from the get-go, and like always Courtney is a joy with his sharp wit. Its a fun story too, very Pertwee.
Robot is such a comfort story for me. I don’t get why people don’t like it
Honestly, while I do feel it has its awkward moments (for me, the way the robot’s confusion and climactic moment were executed,) I gravitated toward Robot over The Ark in Space, which while is a great story, took me longer to like. Robot introduces Tom as The Doctor, shows us who he is immediately.

It is a good fun story. I rewatched it this year and it was really enjoyable. The effects may not always work but it has a charm to it. Also Professor Kettlewell is such a fun side character.
The story is brilliant, the acting is above average for BBC at the time...but the SFX aged badly.

I know a lot of people say Tom Baker is the best Classic Era Doctor, but I honestly love Jon Pertwee as The Doctor more. That said, Baker did have a lot of great stories and scenes that make him iconic, including this 1.

I haven't seen any 4th doctor or any classic doctor really but the "you must cultivate a sense of urgency" after all that really sold me on him

My top Five Doctors overall are Jon Pertwee (The action hero), Tom Baker (the loveable goofball), Sylvester McCoy (the one who should have been given more of a chance), David Tennant (the fan who got to play his hero as a hero), and Peter Capaldi (a 5 year old in a grown up's body playing the man he's loved for years and given a chance to be both goofy and strong.) I love them all.
I'd dump Tom and add Troughton.
For me it is Jon Pertwee, Tom baker, Paul mcgann, david tennant, peter capaldi, and Matt Smith !!!

I would say Tom is an amazing actor but in Doctor Who he isn't even acting he's just being paid to be Tom Baker!

This would actually fit more with Jon Pertwee as he was told to basically act as himself.
He said as much himself in an interview.
It didn’t feel like he was playing a part. He was just being himself.
Pertwee did the same thing. When you see Pertwee as #3, that's him playing himself.

Love the score here. Everytime he opened the door with a change of clothes, the theme would match the clothes and when he came out with the scarf a bit of the Doctor Who main theme played

Hardly an auspicious start, BUT from 1:12 - THE Doctor, the ONLY Doctor... Many have portrayedthe titular timelord, only one person truly IS the Doctor... [Though dear old Troughty, the much misunderstood Colin [Baker] AND the sublime Matt Smith have a sacred place in my heart - Matt and Tom in the museum, brings a tear to my eye just in rememberence of it].

@@CricketEngland he was secretly transporting away and trying a hundred more outfits between the ones we saw but his return timing was so perfect that no one ever even noticed. Even the TARDIS noises got canceled out

let alone him thinking/remembering to take off the brakes right after a regeneration to be quiet…
so I think that time in the TARDIS’s dimension went faster in this instance when compared to time passing on earth…
He's a classic example of inverse ratio between the size of mouth and the size of brain.

To me, Tom Baker will always be on top when it comes to classic Doctors.
I grew up with Tom Baker as the Doctor on PBS, There were other great Doctors in the history of the show but Baker will always be my favorite.
Honestly, that Playing Card Monarch suit suits him.
Someone else, I think in youtube comments or on TV Tropes, said that all three of those costumes turned out to be very symbolic of the 4th Doctor: He's a Viking: traveling around always ready for a fight and to face danger up close, a King: commanding, wise, and a bit remote and ominous, and a clown. Bonus points for him being the King of Hearts.

Tom Baker was my favorite doctor growing up and still is. Although I met David Tennant once at a Comic-con and he was so personable.
Just gotta love Tom. He comes across so fresh and different and witty and funny in his first story. Dodgy robot SCO effects aside I loved Robot!

I like how they don't even need to mention the fact that the time passes faster in the Tardis.

The length of the scarf was actually caused by a misunderstanding between the writers and the wardrobe team
Yup, Begonia Pope used the entire supply of yarn she was given. Costume designer James Acheson provided numerous skeins in different colors assuming Ms. Pope would use only what was needed to create something waist or knee length when draped over the shoulders. Instead, she used every last inch...and made history!
@@Redfern42 - And it was even longer than it eventually ended up for Tom Baker's premiere as the Doctor! It was originally 22 feet long, but they cut it down to a slightly more manageable 14 feet before being used.
I think he already picked out his outfit, he was just giving the Brig a fashion show so that his outfit would seem less ridiculous in comparison.

I just watched this episode the other day lol, I love the comedy they throw in with Tom Baker, suits him well. Keep releasing the classic who seasons on blu-ray I've been waiting for those full collections for yeaaarsss!! It's so much easier to catch up and watch the whole Classic series. Give some love to the first Doctor and release his seasons.
He looks so hopeful, then so downcast, every time.
