I appreciate your honesty! Lord knows there aint enough of that anymore! I am in line with your views on the thick/thin behind the edge. That's why I am leaning more towards Microtech these days. Thanks for posting this sir.
Thank you for the kind words. Gotta express my own opinions. As with all things, it may be in polar opposite to yours. Doesn't mean either of us are wrong, only that we see things differently. Fantastic time, to be not only in the knife game, but sharpening as well. There are so many options to choose from, everyone can cater to their own preferences :)
Great video thanks! I personally got over 20cv/m390 or everything that takes that much effort to sharpen.. I kept my 154cm an S35VN ones.. And a couple of cts xhp. Everything else was sold. I realized those steels give the best ease of sharpen/durability ratio for folders.
Do you have any start to finish beginner tutorials on sharpening? I have a M4, s30v, and 20cv blade and was wondering what stones to use and how to sharpen them. Also do you push or pull, and how and why do you create a burr.
Yes. Search my channel for ‘basic technique’. For those steels Shapton pro stones would be fine. I push and pull. The burr lets me know I’ve reached the apex. It also assures me any damaged steel on the edge is being removed.
Good stones I do agree. I have a few Aogomi #2 kitchen knives on the way soon. I have been following my gritomatic stones with a Suehiro green silicon carbide 8k stone lately. It's a nice progression if you want to avoid using diamond plates.
Yea that death lock is a real bummer. Jt's Knifelife sent me that Case Southern Grind flipper. I was so impressed with that knife, I bought one for myself. Although his didn't have that particular fault, the one I bought did. It had several other defects, and rather than deal with them, I returned the knife for a refund. At $250+, there is no sense in that.
Loved the video mate and your view on ZT as a knife. I only have the zt 0450 which I love as a posh edc carry, but have never found another I wanted since. Does this mean I'm a Jeff fan boy, and can I get help if needed. Lol😜🤣🤣🤣🤣Atb paddy
I have a fan! WooHoo. I told mom I was gonna be famous one day! Seriously though, ZT makes nice knives. Nothing at all wrong with the build quality, or materials. The blades are just too doggon thick for my likes.
Jeff really good video!! I was wondering what you used to flatten your sic stones! When I finally get my sic stones I’ll have to try to get some !! Thanks for the information and thanks for sharing brother much appreciated!!👊
ANYTIME! Sic powder is dirt cheap, so it doesn't take much money. I find the glass when people throw out old coffee tables, and entertainment centers. Remove the glass and take it home. You can score it with a glass cutter from Lowe's, and cut it to size. Tons of youtube videos showing how to do it. Real simple :)
As always very enjoyable watching your videos. I always learn something and have some questions. When you used the grit to flatten the first stone did you edit that part ? Because I’ve done that same process, but it took much longer. Then on the 1K stone you used 120/220 to flatten. ( was that grit also ) It was very helpful to see how you worked with the recurve. Thanks again.
Yes the 120/220 is the same abrasive powder, just a finer grit. I started on the 90 grit, lapped it flat, then conditioned the surface, with 120/220. Here is a more in depth video I did, awhile back, discussing most of the process, and how I do it. ruclips.net/video/jgIUQ4DYNSw/видео.html
@@Jef thank you . 154cm terry knipschield brand 150 dolar - cpm20cv leather wranglers brand 175 dolar - d2 chartermade brand 200 dolar. The best steel cpm20cv why 154cm ?
M390 and 20cv are never heat treated properly. This results in the steel getting easily damaged when it shouldnt. 154 on the other hand is easier to deal with so the heat treat usually end up being decent. Plus it is quick to sharpen and strop back an edge.
I just ordered the gritomatic 240 and 1000 the 2500 is sold out. So i bought a Shapton glass 2000 and I have a Spyderco ultra fine. Should I order a Shapton 12000?
Nice! The Gritomatic and Shapton Pro stones are among my most favorite. It seems everyone has their own opinions of them, but mine have been nothing but positive. They have shown me diamonds are unnecessary, and for that alone, I am most delighted. The Shapton 12/15k is a completely optional stone. For pocket knives, in my opinion, going over 5k, isn't really required. With a strop loaded in compound, you can take any 5k edge, and get it stupid sharp. For me, using anything higher, I reserve for straight razors. Obviously, I do use them on knives, but it is a rare occurrence. It will boil down to your own personal goals, and needs. If you feel that an 8 or 12k edge is desirable for your knives, then it is absolutely is a must buy. I am glad I have mine, but if you watch most my videos, it is not a frequently used stone, and only a handful of videos feature it.
Been looking at the matrix stones compared to the vnev and naniwa stones they seem better then either of those from people who have used them wish they came in larger sizes
I have not used the Naniwa stones yet. They have a limited stock 10k version up on sharpening supplies. I almost bought one the other night. This 4k has a rubbery feel to it. Not fun to sharpen on, and it loads instantly. It is the only one I have used so not sure if the rest behave in the same way, or how they feel. Venev, on the other hand, are hard. The higher grits remind me of Spyderco ceramics.
Jef Jewell I didn’t like the Venev stones in higher grits weird scratch pattern uneven and coarse they supposedly fixed this but not sure that sucks with the rubbery feel on the matrix stones a lot of people like them have you lapped it maybe that could help with feedback I haven’t tried the naniwa stones either cheapest place to get them is Japan woodworker and amazon they sell em for like a hundred
Yes I lapped it..I only have the 4k so I can't say if the others feel the same. It had a nasty chip on the edge, that I caused somehow. Had to remove more than I was comfortable with, to get it out. Only used it twice, and already removed ¼ of the stone.
Jef Jewell damm that sucks did you use the sic powder or alox powder like they recommend and did they soften the edges of the stone from factory that could cause a chip for no reason other then that idk
@@bp-hx9ts Yea I have no clue what I did to chip it. I had to have hit it on something. As for the lapping, I only use Sic. The only Alox I have is 1500 grit.
Great edge man and I feel the same way about ZT, quality materials however other then that don't care for them much. What would you say is your most used or favorite edc, I carry a manix lw in s110v and use it heavily.
Production 20cv has been really unimpressive in tests people have done and seen some pretty low hrc values which sucks because your paying for a supposedly better steel and getting less performance then a lot of s30v benchmade s30v and a few others has outperformed 20cv in tests I’ve seen by a lot actually
I've heard stories about that. My MUDD knife, in 20cv, is one of the best performing edges I've used. Maxamet and 3v, are the only 2 that have been better. I imagine the heat treat on it, was done well. Who knows without testing ~shrug~
Jef Jewell really what 3v you been using 3v has comparable edge retention to s30v from spyderco that I had at the time didn’t test with benchmades s30v I had friends bravo 1 lt to compare it to
I did thin my down considerably, and convexed the edge myself. It isn't a factory grind any longer. Not sure if that made a difference in performance, but I have zero complaints. Using it in my job, it holds an edge very well.
Just going back rewatching old vids jef! U are a great sharpener!

154cm and xhp are a dream to sharpen. 20cv isnt terrible. Extra time on the stones is never a bad thing in my opinion 🤘😛🤘
ZT's knives take a few sharpening to get everything straight. Thank you for another great video.
Thanks!
Zt 0609, the zt you are looking for.
I wish I could get this good at sharpening
you absolutely can. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Just takes practice and time!
So glad I came across your channel.
Hope it has been helpful in some way :)
I love ZT knives. Thanks for vid. Keep up the good work.
Right on. Thanks for checking it out!
Enjoyed the video. I tend to agree with you on ZT, nothing wrong with them, just haven't found one I want to buy. Nice edge.
Exactly. They are nice knives. no doubts there. Smooth and built well. Just too thick for my tastes.
I like the sound of SiC abrasive grain on a glass in the morning...

I still need to do another full sharpening on the Venev stones. Just waiting on my Maxamet to dull :p

Is that a full size 8k or epa sized?
@@Jef it is a full size model. I am not sure it would hold together if it where cut thin and narrow. It might be ok.not sure.
I have heard the epa sized version is the only one available. Do you recall where you purchased it?
@@Jef I found mine on Amazon. Though Ebay has them also.it requires a careful study of the model numbers.
