  • Are you sure you're just dyslexic? Studies show that over 62% of dyslexics have a combination of different learning differences. Dyspraxia, the inattentive subtype of ADHD, ASD and ODD are among the most common differences combined with dyslexia. This video provides an overview and an unofficial screening, in which you might get a better idea of your own mix of learning differences. I go over signs and symptoms, as well as relevant questions specific to each condition.

Hey Arije, wow, I am almost without words. I always wondered if I had dyslexia from the age of 7 or 8, I was always in the lowest reading classes in school But no one bothered to connect the problem with dyslexia. At 9-10 I was diagnosed with LD(learning disorder) but neither my parents nor myself were given any information about correcting it or directions to make it not so hard for me. The answer I always got from EVERYONE was try harder. Today I think back and I just want to cry, I have tried so hard for so long that I am completely exhausted. I am completely mentally, physically, and psychologically exhausted. I'm not frozen/stunted(?), I can function but when it comes to having to over come a dyslexic hurdle(or other comorbitities), I am so exhausted that I need to gather myself and prepare myself, psych myself up. It's seems harder as I get older. My comorbitities are (as far as I can tell) ASD(aspergers), OCD, ADHD(inattentive), Dyslexia and maybe some Dyspraxia(I injure myself a lot but can never remember when, why or how), maybe Synesthesia. No one that I have told about these problems has ever understood how hard life is for me. So, I don't have permanent friends because they always out grow me, move on in life and I get left behind, so to speak. I try to be aware of when people need to phase my friendship out and just ride the wave away. (Just writing this has taken about 2 hours.) I don't even know where I was going with that.... I'm in the US, I grew up in a small rural arean where adults did not know that kids like me need help instead of being left to struggle. I'm terrible with writing... Thanks for reading this if you ever get to it and thanks for sharing this information.

Oh my gosh! This video explains so much about me and my school years. I was diagnosed as dyslexic and I really struggle with it still. Every day ordinary things I struggle to do...read, dial a phone number, do math, spell, etc. I also was hyper, never could sit still, driving my teachers and parents nuts. My attention span was low, I was always so clumsy. My father used to comment on how clumsy I am. I still drop stuff, bump into things, break things all the time, and I fall down a lot, tripping over my own two feet. I am so uncoordinated. Terrible in sports and dreaded P.E. I was always last to be chosen as a team member, it was embarrassing. None of the team captains wanted me. I couldn't throw a ball or catch a ball, couldn't run without falling down or tripping. I have social skill issues. I had and still have trouble making and keeping friends, socializing, showing emotions, etc. I have no idea how to make small talk and I don't function at social gatherings. If forced to gather for a family function, I find some dark, quiet corner to go hide in, not mingling or interacting with anyone, and stay only long enough to be polite. I never knew what facial emotions I was supposed to show so I would watch what others did and copy them. I can't stand loud noises or bright lights and busy places send me into a panic attack. I used to have a horrible temper. I would throw things, yell, scream, daydream about getting revenge. But something happened in my childhood with my temper that was traumatic and after that, I took steps to learn to control my temper. After watching this video I now understand why I am like I am. Thank you for posting this video.

@@ArijeAikedeHaas we can replace that "sometimes" with "often," unfortunately. It is also disheartening how many general practitioners, who typically function as gatekeepers to autism evaluations, simply refuse to refer people who are socially read as women. Because they believe one or more of the myths about us autistics: that we cannot form long term relationships at all, that we never marry or have kids, that any fleeting (or fake) eye contact means autism is out of the question, that only engineering or mathematics are careers that we can excel in, etc.
The worst is "It's so rare in women that you can't have it." (!!!) When we _know_ that they had to pass basic probability and statistics to become doctors, and the long tails of the normal distribution are a fact. Frustrating!
I have read comments about experiences like those^ on Twitter, Facebook, RUclips and various forums since 2011 from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, New Zealand, South Africa, all the Nordic countries, the UK and the US (and these are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head). Yes, I was refered for ASD evaluation only after I came in (for dyslexia evaluation) with my dad who is a walking stereotype of ASD and they noticed that I subconsciously copy his behaviour.
The even funnier thing is that I got diagnosed with dyslexia at 17 because everyone in my previous school refused to acknowledge my symptoms due to my interest in linguistics and history.

I match with dyslexia, adhd, asd, and dysphasia but I’m still a teenager which means I have to bring up any health issues with my parents and anytime I bring up any of these things they brush them off and tell me my behavior is normal. But I know there not normal. My brother has adhd and my symptoms match his, my friend has dyslexia and I match symptoms with her. I’m literally matching symptoms with everyone around me but my parents still tell me my behavior and actions are normal. I don’t want to have to wait a couple more years to be able to go to a doctor by myself but I also don’t want to bring them up to my parents again to be brushed off because then I feel like I’m making it all up.

I have been diagnosed with Dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety disorders, ASD, and possibly have Dyspraxia, and most likely have Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia based on your videos explaining the symptoms.
I'm so glad you mentioned woman being missed with ASD. I tend to mask pretty well most of the time. Unfortunately for me, I've had certain important family members basically saying that my masking isn't masking. I try to tell them what masking is and they say that EVERYONE does that! I try to explain further, and they still brush me off. They keep saying that my masking is the same as a average person pretending to be happy around people. It's not the same. It's similar, but also very different. It's so frustrating when people just....I don't remember the word for it....but when people deny your disability and say it's not real, or it's not as bad as we think, and all that. They don't understand. I'm about to be 27 this month and they still don't seem to understand. Being told to stop being weird at the table because you flinched or covered your ears from a dish clang or chewing.... it's demoralizing. There's more to go into, but I'll stop here. Thanks for making this informative video 😁👍.

After reviewing your videos on the combo types of dyslexic I found myself asking the question is it possible to be both types simultaneously ? I experience all of these on some level . Inattentive ADHD my opinion seems to be the one that happens the least for me . Or might be selective or just being triggered at random intervals because I believe that I’m the type that likes or enjoy hyper focusing on things. Sometimes even to my own detriment. I’ve also noted that I experience synesthesia when I read, a good amount of the time. But it mostly occurs when I’m reading paper but not some thing on a phone or a computer screen. I find all of this very fascinating but I hope my comment has not crossed over to the realm of “ over sharing “ and non-pertinent data.

My routine changing and textures of clothing I displayed textbook signs of autistic Behavior and no one ever suspected me of having ASD because I was a girl. At my age it is interesting to think of how much my life would have been different had my parents or even myself known. 1 Yes to ADD + working memory problems . 2 yes to dislexia+ my handwriting continuously switches between printed and running writing - randomly -sometimes from 🤨 misspelled word to misspelled word - other times it can be a few words between switching. I hate writing- I feel like a physical weight is pressing down on me- I begin to sweat 😓- . Often a simple written task a task I can sometimes do ….just escapes me ,like writing out an invoice . When I pick up a knife and fork - my brain has to think about which way I normally hold them - I just don’t understand why why my brain is like this . It’s so frustrating. I find it difficult to be around people who are simply talking without saying anything , I get unreasonably irritated bye the - look at me look at me loud talkers . I’ve been a grumpy old man since childhood. So I’ve been told. I get crazy hot and start to sweat 😓 as soon as I do anything physical. I have worked in places where stacks of timber are frozen together and co-worker’s are rugged up with layers of clothing - I was wearing jeans and a single long sleeved shirt and sweat buckets. So frustrating. I hate being me and I don’t like feeling this way about myself . I have come across some interviews with a guy named (Peter crone ) also known as the (mind architect ) I hope my personal crybaby complaints about myself resonate with someone else so they don’t feel like they are alone . Unfortunately I am as intolerant of my own faults as I can be off other’s . I love this channel and find your work insightful and progressive. Thank you . 👣🦘🇦🇺🍻

Why are people in life so determined to deny neurodivergent experience? They are sceptical about how much dyspraxia affects my life but then get annoyed at forgetfulness, clumsiness and “butting in” to conversations (it takes me time to formulate responses and often the conversation has moved on but I am unable to follow the thread whilst thinking of my response).

Hallo Arike, Thanks for making video’s . I’m finding them to be insightful and entertaining. I also wanted to say that I have Dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia. As well as what my doctor calls ADHD induced anxiety and depression disorder. I speculate that I might have ASD Or what I like to call “ F- ASD” Because it seems to manifest like it does in females even though I look like A male. I also self identify as a xenogendered individual.

It's almost distressing to me how little I see myself in ASD. I was diagnosed with Aspergers before ASD was formalized. The focus was ... different. Which does line up with my own protests about it becoming a spectrum and aspergers getting phased out as a diagnosis. Similar symptoms doesn't necessarily make it part of the same spectrum. They even asked about numbers and left and right etcs, when I was going through evaluation. Whether I got these things wrong as a child and still do.
Regardless, it's interesting. I didn't know dyscalculia was a thing until very recently and only since finding this channel that it's related to dyslexia. My dad very clearly has dyslexia and my grandmother was an obvious case, as well. She moved from her home country at age 15, and at 80 she still had a severe accent, spoke neither language well and struggled to write. She had no other diagnosis. Dad would have gotten full points on ADHD if he was a child today - or cared to get a diagnosis now.

There's definitely two sides and the of one always seems to be less focused on.
What are the things I have noticed with the dyslexics I know we all have some form of slight OCD and are super efficient when working. Roll highly motivated and always looking for a challenge.

I was diagnosed with autism spectrum condition at 13 years old (17 now) but I’m in 1st year college now 🇬🇧 and I’m having trouble revising and doing exams. My support teacher noticed the level of books I read and they’re for young children, books that I had to request the college to but because they weren’t available in the college library. This is because 16-18 yr olds usually read higher-level vocabulary and matured books. She saw the books and I told her that it takes ages (about 5-10 mins) to read even 1 page of a book of that level. She already knew that I had trouble with exams and I was already getting extra time because of my autism. However, she thinks there may be something wrong with my reading and writing skills and that it could be dyslexia. They’re getting someone to run some tests to see if I’m dyslexic. If it comes back negative, then dyslexia is ruled out and they’ll run different tests to see if it’s that I can’t understand or process the words in some way. The first set of tests is the coming Wednesday and I’m really nervous. Also, you may think that this was typed with no spelling errors but I used autocorrect and I still made mistakes that I had to correct. I don’t know if I have it though. I’m just really nervous and never thought about having autism until I was diagnosed and now it could be dyslexia as well. All this time, I thought I was dumb and stupid and illiterate. 😔

I'd like to say that the question of Do you have dyslexia? depends on who you ask. Many educational psychologists define it as poor phonological processing. I learned more when I read, "The Gift of Dyslexia" that explained that 15% of dyslexics don't fit that criteria. The experts in the field disagree on this too.

My mouth muscles were weak and didn't work very well for some reason. When I was speaking some what normally can not read at all. I failed to read every day. I am very bad at visual and language, even though dyslexic are at visual learners. My hands slower than most people. I am addicted to patterns and charts, even if I not understand them. I hope my story has a understanding idea.

I mask a lot and I got diagnosed with ODD and ADHD in 1st grade
and Autism undiagnosed until about 3 years ago
and I'm a Senior in highschool and my Novel class I'm in I've taken so long to read a single book that when my teacher assigned another I struggled and I ended up having to use Spark notes and I'm still struggling and my parents keep telling me I'm not dyslexic
but I gotta be considering how things are hard for me
like right now i have so many missing assignments due to me not understanding certain aspects of either the reading or compression and etc.
My parents won't even let me talk to my psychiatrist about this because they think I'm just looking for another excuse for me to use when I can't do something. Ive been told many of times not to use my diagnoses as a crutch but I'm not, when I say I don't understand someone or something I truly mean that. Even reading texts or emails I misinterpret them quite often. How do I go about talking to my psychiatrist about this?

would you still be considered those things, given the criteria?

First of all, I believe that it's already great that you are aware of these different possibilities. Together with part one of this video, you have a good overview of the most common combinations together with dyslexia. The genetic component of ADHD/ADD is very strong, so it would make sense that your son also has some form of ADHD.
I would suggest starting with simple screenings that you can find online. And I would also talk to the psychologist and make sure that they are not only looking for dyslexia. I would also say that it is important that you communicate that you have ADD yourself. If there's anything known on the father's side, then that would be important as well.
Good luck, and after the diagnosis, make sure your son gets the accommodations he needs. And if you have any other questions, I'll do my best to answer them in the best way possible.

I find that I have to read the same paragraph of text many times to start to understand it and get tired of doing that and just stop/give up after a while. Not a dumb question at all. It's something we struggled with for years for our daughter. She's now 18, out of school, not sure about college, but happy. We chose no meds, but we know others that took that route with good results. There no judgements either way. You can only do what works for you. You can try the meds and if you feel it's not right or working the way you want, stop taking them.

Hey Adam, I don't have a video on that specific question. But I would to recommend a different video from the channel: How to ADHD
      ruclips.net/video/38qpm6VKBFc/видео.html
One of the ideas that she mentions is that you don't always have to take the medication. You can basically use them according to your needs your current situation. If you start using medication I would simply see that as you taking care of yourself. And that is a really good thing.
The medication would help you to focus and pay attention. However your struggles when it comes to reading are only partially due to a lack of attention and focus. So even if you start using medication I think it is likely that you will still experience difficulties while reading. Probably a little less but the decoding process will still be hard because of your dyslexia.

    • @dablinne
      @dablinne 2 года назад
