Yeah it meant a lot. The Alien rock was so badass & unique. Found it at a thrift. I was struggling with drinking back then, so that act of him making good on his word boosted me up. Going on 4 years sober now and whenever I see clips of Tom or listen to his music, I’m always really appreciative. Good dude.
Tom touches on something here that I've been saying for years: Blink's hits were not their best songs. They were great for what they were at the time, but I think a lot of their deep cuts hold up much better over the years.
Nah everyone's going to know them for blink 182 and everyone's going to love and know their hits cause it represents a time where things were fun and simple and they were fun and upbeat songs.
Only like new gen or people that think they are better than before are gonna be gatekeeper snobs about it.
It's a weird cycle too where some people were snobs about the songs back then but now when they hear it, it reminds them of a better time it's nostalgic and wish they could appreciate it more when it came out.
Tom needs to stop trying to hate on his past the interviewer had to stop him in his tracks to show him to appreciate it cause to be honest the road tom was going down in that interview was stupid.

Cause they aren't complex or mature or edgy? The hits will always be the representation of blink 182 and there's nothing wrong with that yeah there's other songs to like or more lyrical songs or deeper songs from them doesn't mean it makes first date or or rock show bad songs.
It more bothers me that Tom doesn't appreciate it I mean he left the band and just goes to join another band for a reason yes I'm aware he did the samething as a side project in the past with box car racers but right at the beginning of this clip he goes to defend his current band about "yead" then jumps to taking shots at his old band with poking at the song all the small things.
Makes no sense to me he defended the word "yead" then tries to play it off as "he did it cause he thought it was funny" but yet contradicts himself in saying the blink 182 song all the small things lyrics sounds like a 14 year old wrote it.
so saying "yead" cause it's funny to you in a song is not in the lyrical category of doing something that seems like a 14 old? compared to a other song you claim the lyric sounds like a 14 old?
It's very ironic and contradicting if thats the case it has nothing to do what he was making up in the interview, for some reason he took a jab at blink 182 and then stood up for his current band angels and airwaves.
I'm not sure what his beef that he acts like he wants nothing to do with blink anymore and why he split up but his reasons and attitude don't seem to align between the two.
I mean even when I first heard angels and air waves hit song i thought it was just another blink song I mean I don't know where he thinks angel and air waves are anywhere different in sound or lyrics.
Wow. 2:14 "We brought sunshine... with a little bit of dick jokes sprinkled on top of it" Is perhaps the best definition of what Blink 182 was about. Leave it to the man himself to describe his band perfectly.

Love it or hate it but all the small things is a timeless song. They were able to create a song that represented a specific time and it became special to many people.

Blink 182 saved me in 2000 from going down a very depressive road. I listened to Enema of the State every single day that year in high school. I had just changed schools so I had no friends, it was just me, my discman and Blink 182. I'm alright now, that was a long time ago, but this is why I love them so, so much!
I was in my early 20s, but in that same headspace...so, same here. Music has always been my ultimate safety net.

Blink has grown with me. Born in 90, got enema in the state in 4th grade, saw them on the TOYPAJ tour middle school, self titled album tour in high school, first reunion tour, and now again in my early 30s. Their lyrics have made more and more sense as I’ve grown up, and they’re now precious jewels in my mind. Can’t say how much I appreciate this band.
The fact you got EotS in grade four makes me so feel so goddamn old hahaha. I think i bought dude ranch in University.

He’s looking at himself critically as an artist. Of course you want your new work to stand out. My favorite Blink song is probably Carousel. Specifically the live version from the Mark Tom and Travis Show. So much better than the studio version.

Hate to break it to you but carousel is not super well liked by Tom either. I'm pretty sure he's said he has no idea why that song was their most popular of their old stuff. If I remember right he said the song makes no sense and has some real gibberish lyrics according to him.

Carousel from MTTS is absolutely one of the best.
Blink was one of those bands I first started listening to when I got into rock and metal. They inspired me to learn guitar too.
In grade 8, I met a kid in summer school and he was a punker that played guitar, and he taught me some invaluable things in my journey as a guitar player. He was a huge tom delonge fan, had that classic green strat tom used before he switched over to that Gibson ES 333. I lost touch of him a long time ago, but I still have those memories.
Even tho I don't listen to much punk or rock music, blink182 is one of those bands I still listen to. Mutt is my favorite song

The thing is, Master of Puppets is great, but I don't have many memories attached to that song. All The Small Things, on the other hand, reminds me of so many people and so many moments. So it's not always about the "best" songs, it's about what connects with people in a vital part of their lives.
Well also, those songs came out 13 years apart. different generations...Master of Puppets was like early Gen-X kids, All the Small Things was firmly team Millenial

All the Small Things is just a song that makes you feel happy to be alive. It's a personification of the American dream. It's something to reach for and to hope for. Brilliant song
There are few songs that take me back immediately from the first note like all the small things. It's a memento from a period of time that doesn't exist anymore
Dude Ranch will forever be my favorite Blink album. I liked Buddha, but Dude Ranch sold me. I've never disliked a single album they've released-including the new stuff; but Dude Ranch has always held a special place in my heart.
Developed my guitar and bass chops from Dude Ranch. During the summer back in 2001 going into 9th grade I’d wake up from my dark room, open the blinds and windows, let the sun shine in and blast Dude Ranch. Listening to those tracks back really let my imagination run about what high school and being an adult would be like. Such a trip.
That's the album that got me!! I was 15 when it came out and I got to see them on tour with Bad Religion promoting Enema of the state, one of my favorite shows, still have the ticket stub.
Dude ranch is a masterpiece from that single piece of time (mid 90's), it captures everything that a middle class misfit boy was back then, I love it, that album talked to me. For me, the best blink album ever.

Same, but a lot of the people within the blink fanbase/community play it up to be one of their best songs. I don't really like ATST, to be honest with you [not to say that it's the worst thing in the world]. It's honestly kinda underwhelming when compared to the rest of the album. Tom's right: they do have better songs. IMO, tracks like Mutt, Dumpweed and Going Away to College should've gotten the spotlight that ATST got.
All The Small Things is alright but they have better songs. It’s just everyone knows it. I’d love to play Miss You or Pathetic in a cover band but people probably wouldn’t know it.

2010 I Found Blink182 and +44 during a amazing time in life when life wasn't great but those songs kept me smiling and dancing thru the nights we will always miss blink

I haven't not skipped All The Small Things since it's original run. Dumpweed/Aliens Exist/Going aways to College are my favorites off that album.

As a kid this was one of the best albums i ever heard. One of the first albums i heard that felt perfect. IT just beckoned you to play it all the way through. Still holds up better than most albums from that era.
I was in 7th grade and I bought my first ever album. It was Take Off Your Pants and Jacket! I picked a perfect album!
I play along to all the small things on my fender Delonge guitar at least once a week. Played at my 8th grade talent show back in 2000 and it’s my favorite blink song next to Mutt. Really enjoy playing bass to that song too.

I wanted hear what Tom thought were their clearly better songs. I’m going on record that Dysentery Gary is the most criminally underrated song on Enema; Going Away to College and Mutt are also fantastic. Small Things did have that hilarious video though.

Stryker you hit the nail on the head! We listen to it because it takes us back to a time that we sorely miss now. The music is literally a time machine. Even if it's a little cringe, you know what sucks about cringe? It's robbing our creativity, the colour and life from our world. Self awareness is great, but it makes art feel cold and less emotional. I'm just going off the top now - just how I feel.
