The problem is that you can get an M1 Air, nicely specced for up to $1000 less than an M2 Air on the Used/refurbished market. Some of the changes on the M2 are nice to have, but none of them are really worth that much of a price difference. In fact, if you spec up an M2 Air to 16Gb and 512 or 1Tb of storage, than you're basically close to the price of a 14" MacBook Pro, which looks similar and is only slightly larger and thicker. But it has better cooling, a better screen, much better sound, more ports, and better performance overall. So if you're a typical user, than a used/refurbished M1 Air is a better choice. And if you're a power user, than the 14" MBP is a better choice. The pricing on the M2 means that there really isn't a good case for buying one.
@@adulsamih7174 I got my M1 Air highly specced, with a 1Tb drive , 16 Gb and all cores for about $1500. A similar M2 Air would have been closer to $2500.
This is the video I've been waiting for! I got my M1 Air with 8 core gpu/cpu, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD a little over a year ago to replace my 2014 MacBook Pro i7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. My plan was to keep the Air until the newer 14 inch MacBook Pros were released and trade it in. I have not done anything that has made me want to get rid of the M1 Air. Is there memory swap when doing the ocasional heavy task? Yes. Does it matter? Not really because I rarely do heavy tasks this days. The M1 Air is capable to handle any Lr and Ps work, 4K video edit in Final Cut Pro that I might need to do. I really enjoy the new design of the M2 Air, but I don't think the upgrade is worth it in my use case. I also agree on going refurbished, specially with Apple's own store which gets you a 1 year warranty.
I picked up an M1 Air 16GB/512 used and am loving it. Looking at memory usage it is quite frequently over 8GB so I'm definitely glad I went this route.
that's not how it works. The operating system will eat and try to use as much ram as it needs for system stuff. If you give it 8, it won't request more than 8 (ofc). If you give it 32, it won't request more than 32, but you might see it using 16 GB for no reason as well. Unused ram is wasted ram.
Been driving myself mad trying to find an answer to whether 16gb is really needed for able to on an m1 for days. This comment thread has single handedly helped me decide on the 16gb, so thanks :)
@@Lssymesthey're all wrong lol the point is with 8GB ram Macos will simple not use as much RAM. it won't use Swap to make up for the difference unless absolutely needed and in my experience that's extremely rare
Do yourself a favor and get more ram. These m1 and m2 macs will use 8gb of ram just to function? And with every internet tab and application you use it “will” go over 8 or 16GB and start using tons of swap file space. Do not listen to people that don’t have macs. If you don’t get more ram you will get the dreaded please close this app screen constantly. Do not do less than 16GB of ram on a M series Mac
I bought the base model air m2 and its a great laptop. Don't get confused by all the ssd topic. Before I had a intel MacBook Pro 13 16 gb ram but this laptop feels so much faster in real life
For a new buyer, with no MacBook at ALL, would you suggest buying the M1 or M2? I see everyone saying it’s not worth the upgrade when you already have an M1. But is it worth it to just take the plunge and get the M2?
if you paying full price for both from apple store get M2, point everyone is making is that you can find M1 on special or as an apple refurbished for less. At that point M1 is the better deal and price difference is alot bigger
It's a matter of what you need, what you want, and your budget. Most people don't "need" the M2 Air - and it's more expensive - but it's nicer. I would definitely recommend upgrading to 16GB of RAM regardless of which one you get, so keep that in mind.
@@macin12872 Eh it depends, if you have a MacBook already then go for M1 but I don’t have any laptop so the M2 seems great to me with the upgrade stuff
I've been attracted to the M2 MBA ever since it released. From what I've learned following the RUclipsrs I trust (you're on that short list) the best affordable option for the average user is an upgrade to 16GB of memory. That will improve multitasking and reduce swapping and wear on the 256GB SSD.
Can't say how many of these reviews I've watched. Here, in June 2023, I just ordered M1 MBA 16/1 TB. The build and the heat-sink superiorities of the M1 MBA, not to say the elegance of the form factor and the performance of the MBA M1 were deciding factors. M1 MBA is going to be supported way longer than people think: it is classic.
I think between the m1 air and the m2 air it was an easy choice, the m2 had worse cooling and the ssd on the base config was literally half the speed of the m1s ssd. The m3 fixed that but still
I bought an M1 Air last week. there was a 375 $ price gap with M2 Air base model. with that money I saved, I bought a Dell 4K external monitor. instead of getting just M2 macbook, now I have an M1 macbook and an external monitor at the same time. the monitor supports power delivery to macbook through type-c kable, so second type-c port is available for my use.
Benchmark tests aren't useless. $2000 14" MBP is 4 months of average salary in my country hence many amateur or entry level pro creatives would like to know how far we can push MBA so we don't have to sacrifice an arm or a leg for a tool.
As always, great video! I love how honest you are with your reviews. I've upgraded my parents in 2021 (iPad and Macbook Air), but this year it's time for me. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro (a fossil, I know, but it's been upgraded to 1TB SSD and 8GB RAM in 2015) so I was waiting patiently for the M1 models, but my jaw dropped when I saw the price of the 14 inch M1! This year's 13 inch M2 was supposed to be The One, but it has that god-awful touch bar, I cannot even look at that thing, I hate it so much! I'm not sold when it comes to the Airs, I use and abuse my computer over 18 hours a day and I feel like a better cooling system is a must. I watched everything you uploaded on the 3 models and all the comparisons, but I would love to see a short video summing up the differences between the Air M2 with the Pros, 13 inch M2 and 14 inch M1 all with the same/similar specs, if it hasn't been suggested before :) Take care, thank you for your help with last year's upgrades!
I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro non retina 13” model. I updated the ram to 8GB and the hard drive to SSD-still works. Did you upgrade your MacBook yet? I thought about an Air 15” whenever it comes out.
@@stw2186 not yet, I'm waiting to see what Apple drops this spring. For me it has to be a Pro, no touch bar, with at least 16GB RAM. I'll even deal with only 256GB drive since I have an external one, but RAM needs to be a mid-high range for today's standards, since I'm expecting this thing to run 10 years at least, just like the fossil I have now :D how about you? 15inch won't fit in my backpack, so I'm only looking at the 13/14 models.
The current situation i believe can be broken down quite easily: 1. You are on a budget? Go on m1 macbook air, no brainer, you can get it brand new for 850$ from several distributors 2. You are upgrading from an old version and want the latest model and can afford it? Go for a 16 gb and 1 tb ssd configuration m2 3. Both fantastic machines, i would say that 16 gb ram is mandatory even on m1 models, it allows for much more including gaming via parallels
@@lucabastianello9830 depends, I travel a lot, a lightweight laptop is mandatory for me. If you are more stationary then I’d definitely suggest the 14 inches MacBook pro
@@SinSniper1 if you travel a lot and you need power 14" pro it's the better Optimus, with the $$ you save you have the power and you can buy a poeerbank to charge (if you travel a lot you need one anyway). And the difference is not so much about hours usage. Moreover if MacBook air need tens of minutes more than the pro to tender some video.. you waste more time . If you don't do anything more than browse social and mail... Better the base M1 Air..
The M2 is designed for game developers to use new Metal 3 graphics calls. Not accelerated, that will come later, but at least they can get some coding done while Apple works on ray tracing hardware for the M2 they really wanted to make. I'd wait for the 3nm M2 (or whatever they call it) to come out.
@@TechGearTalk next would be face unlock camera tech, the notch was set up for that in the first place but Apple like incremental upgrades so they get more purchases
Which of these two is better for a university use (take notes, watching videos, using excel and other stuff)?: -MBA with 512 of SSD and 8gb of RAM - MBA with 256 gb of SSD (with the storage issue) and 16 Gb of RAM Considering that I would like to keep this MacBook for at least 5-6 years
Get the bigger storage - more convenient in the long term. U will only benefit from the 16gb RAM if u do coding for large projects or video editing that has at least 40min duration. The 8gb RAM can breeze thru 15min video projects with no marked difference from 16gb.
Storage is easier to expand through an external and far cheaper than the cost of upgrading to 512. So I’m steered towards 16GB RAM as you have no way to improve that after the fact.
Hey there, I am stuck between choosing a refurbished M1 with 16gb RAM and 1TB of storage, or spend $200 more and get an M2 with 16gb of RAM and 256gb of storage. I'm quite worried that the battery capacity, while it's guaranteed to be >80%, will severely drop in the next couple of years. What would you do?
Spending $1200 to upgrade the M1 model to 16GB RAM & getting that one instead is a great idea. We can already somewhat see that the base model M2 air is not going to age well at all. Over time, our gadgets need more RAM, more disk speed, more storage, more processing power, to get the same things done. Even web apps are so complex & memory intensive nowadays.
I would disagree with the sound comment. Listening to these two side by side, the M1 with its up facing speakers sounds richer, less muted, than the rear facing speakers on the M2 at least IMO. In general I think most laptops with up firing speakers sound better than those that fire down or to the back, to me this seems no different. Also the default SSD (256) slowing things down on the M2 requiring (who pays more for less ; ) ) you to upgrade to address the SSD, and you're looking at a $400 difference. That's $1400 for a 14" laptop with 8g ram, the value is gone on the M2. The M2 in the midnight color does look nice.
The general point here is there's not much difference between the two machines , and the later model has gone up . Prices ,over time , always go up.I snapped up an M1 Macbook Air ...I knew things would go downhill.
Is there a difference between the two keyboards ? I find my M1 keyboard keys require too stiff and I miss my 2015 MBA keyboard because of this. I wonder if the M2 keyboard is just the same than the M1 or if they made improvements ? Thanks for the comparison !
Please also take into consideration that Apple will probably support the M1 at least 2 years less than the M2 (OS updates, security updates, etc.). This should affect your buying decision if you plan on keeping your machine for many years. However, if you plan on upgrading every 2-3 years then it might not matter.
That is not correct. Apple will support the M1 for a totally of 7 years with OS Updates, just like they do all other Macs. Their support schedule is clearly stated.
Thank you for this comparison. Seems like I won’t be upgrading from my M1 Air (8c, 16MB, 1TB) for a while yet. The M2 would be a great upgrade from any older Intel though. Also, call me crazy but I’m still partial to that wedge shape!
I wonder how you'll feel in a year or even just two years from now, when a notch will be synonymous with Apple, not the wedge shape. The outdated design will be seen as an inferior design and appeal is one the biggest draw of owning Apple hardware....lower resell value....
@@percy9228 I hate the notch! I went to the Apple store to check it out and that notch is an eye sore. Call me crazy, but the M2 Pro looks better than the new design 😆
@@percy9228 I choose M1 air because it's small, thin, light and has very good battery life + I wanted to try the new M1 chip. For me the functionality is way more important than display design, I don't buy mac just because it's made by apple so therefore I don't really care if it looks like apple or not. For me laptop is just laptop and M1 air is really good one. Regarding reselling, I rarely sell my hardware because either I use them almost till they are dead or if they are in good condition I pass them to my familly.
Would love to change my MBP 15' 2015 to M1/M2. I love the design of M2, but I've heard many not such good thin about M2. RAM speed, heat etc. It worries me a lot tho I can't stand M1 design :l. Despite high prices in Poland :S
Great comparison, with some really pragmatic consumer advice right at the end. Personally, I will never understand the emphasis that some consumers place on the color or the "design", a 0.1 lb difference in weight, or a 0.3" difference in screen size. I started paying attention to Macs two years ago when the Mac Air became the gigachad of mobile price-to-performance, and from that perspective (which the video rightly points out is probably not shared by Apple's core demographic) the $200 base price increase and the slower SSD performance _do_ matter.
I'm planning to buy my first MacBook! But I'm really confused on which one to buy M1 or M2?? And also I'm planning to get the base model, I'm gonna use it for school works, some light video editing, maybe playing sims and for entertainment, please what do you think I should get for a first timer on Mac. Thank you!
get the m2. apple is going to continue to support newer models for 3-4 years until they make a new one. while the M1 is cheaper but won’t last you as long due to apple being a company that leaves the old behind.

I can't help but wonder why people working remotely (working being the main word here) use a MacBook Air? Why is a company providing their engineers and office workers that create the products, or support the products with a MacBook Air? Is it because it is "good enough" and to hell with your demands of a better, bigger screen? The MacBook Air is the entry machine and yet people seem to flock to it, complaining about whatever suits them. This is why Chromebooks failed and now that they are starting to build better Chromebooks, now it no longer matters. A battle lost. The M2 MacBook Air is a great machine, I bought one for my daughter as she is mainly writing blogs on it and watches silly stuff. By the way I have started purchasing all my Apple laptops with 16Gb of memory and 512Gb of storage. I find that to be a good configuration.
I work remotely with an M1 Air. Reality is it’s plugged into a monitor most of the time so the screen size is moot. Performance is amazing for general work tasks. Haven’t yet had a moment when I’ve wished for something different. Plus, when I do go to the office or client sites or a cafe the portability and long battery life is very handy.
Thanks a lot! I just got a refurbished M1 before the M2 came out. I love it and it's souped up but I'm still having some problems in FCPX during editing.
Great video--super helpful and informative. I have the MB Air M1--with just 8 gigs of RAM. Wish I had 16. Have noticed some sluggishness in certain cases. Maybe a refurb with 16 gigs RAM would be the answer.

I really hope apple makes a 15 inch macbook air, fan or fanless, but can power up to at least 2 monitors. The m2 air is awesome but just doesn't fit my personal needs at all.
Which one should I choose: MBA M1 8/512 or M2 8/256? I just need to do some office work and light video editing. If the M2 base model has poor ssd speed, does the M2 8/521 experience the same problem?
I can get my hands on a brand new Macbook air M1 - the base model (256 SSD & 8gb ram)- for just 919 euros (= 943 $) (reduced price). Normally the base model is around 1029 euros. I want more storage- just to be safe- but then I would have to spent 1300 euros (=1334$). Should I get this model, use an external SSD and deal with the storage it has installed (and the 8GB's of RAM) or spent some more on RAM or storage? I would describe myself as a standard user: browsing the web, using social media, working for school, watching RUclips,... but I like to take family pictures and transfer them over to my computer (and eventually transfer them over to an external harddrive). I don't know what to do because the price is so low at this point and spending almost 400 extra just for some extra space is crazy- BUT I want a computer to last me for years to come and I don't want to care about storage. I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance :D
You will have to get that software off the Microsoft website, but I think I am going to get the M2. It will have longer support from Apple and you can get 100$ off if you're a student.
I get that the M1/M2 use a different sort of memory and storage, but I'm sure Apple could make them as either user or store changeable modules to upgrade them post purchase, or even a user slot for some really slow 3GB/s NVME SSD.
Great video. Long time Windows user that is looking to move on over to Apple. Any recommendations on what MacBook to get that can handle video editing and Photoshop work?
I returned my M2 MacBook Air, it got way to hot. I could not keep it on my lap for more then 5 min without melting my legs off, the screen kept dimming when watching movies, its like why even have the new brightness if i can’t even use it? I reordered a new M1 MacBook Air instead because the M2 air is not the worth the increase in price. The new M2 air is a disaster
@@ammarhussam05 watch movie’s, after the first 5 mins its to hot for your legs and after 10 mins into a movie the brightness will dim and back again throughout the movie, watching movies should not be that difficult for this machine yet it is lol, just worthless
I completely disagree with your opinion on audio. I find that the M2 lacks the ability to reproduce a full audio spectrum. I use my computer for recording audio, the M2 does not properly represent the recorded sound in a way that is useful.
If I have Samsung T7 external SSD’s that transfer at 1000mb/s, regardless of if I get a base MBA M1 (with a read/write I’d say 2000mb/s) or a base MBA M2 (with a read/write is 1500mb/s) I’m still only going to get a transfer speed of the T7 at 1000mb/s, correct? So the whole MBA M2 SSD read/write issue is redundant in that specific use case?
Thank you for the great review. Most youtuber does nothing but praise apple. My problem is; it's enough to work 10-15 days to get a computer in the usa. But working 225 days to get the m2 air 512gb 26gb ram bu curse i've been living in. and you have to save your winnings before you eat. i'm a graphic designer, and i need a computer. Question 2: i'm not doing anything except PS, IN DESIGN, AI and a few minutes of ad videos. you think i should try to get the 14 pro base model with 32 ram?
Thank you for the kind words. Look, the 14 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro + 32GB is going to be a beast - and is definitely the more powerful machine (better multi-core CPU and better GPU). You'll also have a fan for sustained performance (better display, ports, etc.). It's a question of value and budget to me - if you have the money and you are using it for work, for top performance is paramount - go 14. Having said that, you can do what you mentioned with the M2 + 24GB. It's nuanced of course, I don't know exactly what kind of work you're doing in those apps, so there are levels to that as well. Hope that helps.
I got a 14’ pro and an m1 air, to be honest, I prefer the air more, for my daily work, there is no obvious difference between them, and the air is much more portable compared to the heavy pro, which most of the time sitting on the desk while the air is something I like to carry around.
thanks for this! I'll be carrying the macbook with me to uni 5 days a week and don't have enough money to afford the 14" but was still sad because I thought it's better but I'm sure from an ergonomics point of view it vastly superior to the 14"
@@percy9228 You don't say, before I own the Air, I didn’t give much thought about ergonomic design since I’ve been already used to the Pro, but after I used the Air, I really like the comfort it gives.

I hated the design of the old MacBook Air. That weird triangle shape under the keyboard. I only ever got the MacBook Pro, not because I needed it but because it was uniform in that area. The redesigned MacBook Air looks great. If they put an M1 in it and discounted it I’d buy it. But I’ll have to make die with the M2. I don’t do any hardcore stuff in it so it should be fine.
I was just being apple. I was able to run multiple monitors from basic devices like a surface go and own up. It just does not make any sense. That MacBook Air should not be crippled so people have the choice to buy a different computer. Most of us have multiple devices. I like the MacBook Air because small form factor with the power. I would easily choose one over a MacBook pro and continues my more powerful laptops for other things. But I just cannot stand Apple in there ways... I dumped Apple a while back and they're always on the radar, but just haven't done anything get me to come back yet
Hi! I’m an incoming freshmen college student and I’m looking for a small MacBook to buy. I personally prefer these smaller 13inch models so as to not carry a lot. But in the case of school work, would the m2 chip be better or would the m1 chip work just as fine? It’s important to note that I’m majoring in computer science so I might need to run programs that require a bit more work to run. Or would the m1 model work fine just with an upgraded Ram? Thanks!
The m1 works almost the same as the m2, no joke. I would get the m1 MacBook Air or even the pro with 16 gb of ram. Don’t worry about upgrading the storage because you can just get an external ssd when you need it
Go with the M1 Air and spec it out! Apple let's you purchase office so you have access to the apps needed for your classes and it's powerful and fanless so no noise or heat issues. The battery is GREAT plus I use illustrator and Photoshop along with garage band and have no issues at all or slow down. My laptop has NEVER heated up or been warm and you can connect to a monitor when needed....be sure to spec it up though. Go with a 16gb and minimum 512 gb for storage and get a external hard drive or SSD to move your files to and you will be fine.
A couple of points. The webcam on the M2 air is not an advantage over the M1 because Mac OS Ventura is coming out next month with continuity camera. You mentioned the speakers being better. You’re the only reviewer out of the channels I watch that said the speakers were better. Others have said because of the new placement the M2 speakers sound more muffled. Now there’s two less reasons to choose the M2 air over the M1
M2 is a rip off for most average users, as long as the M1 is around. The camera is not that great (and you can use your phone as a camera in the new OS), screen size difference is negligible, and so is speed differences. I have been using the M1 for the last couple of years, and it's works great. I'm a professor and I teach in Zoom a lot these days. Never has my M1 given me issues, except when I am pushing it to the max. And even then it just gets slightly slower. If I upgrade from this, I'd rather spend that much money on the 14" MBP.

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your story and thought process with the community. Thank you for being part of the channel!

@@thatsreallyamoon you're not wrong but it seems his point went over your head, at 8gb it uses swap and that damages the SSD.
Not at all. M2 sucks, m1 is better in so many ways
if you paying full price for both from apple store get M2, point everyone is making is that you can find M1 on special or as an apple refurbished for less.
I appreciate you sharing. That upgrade is definitely an important one.
If you're keeping the 256gb then you don't need the m2 mba
Even with 32gb ram, there is still memory swap happening even with low usage.

@@warkasai7558 Just perfect. The laptop with no issues.
The current situation i believe can be broken down quite easily:
1. You are on a budget? Go on m1 macbook air, no brainer, you can get it brand new for 850$ from several distributors
2. You are upgrading from an old version and want the latest model and can afford it? Go for a 16 gb and 1 tb ssd configuration m2
3. Both fantastic machines, i would say that 16 gb ram is mandatory even on m1 models, it allows for much more including gaming via parallels
If you 0ay about 16 gb amd 1 tb ssd... better 14" pro
@@lucabastianello9830 depends, I travel a lot, a lightweight laptop is mandatory for me. If you are more stationary then I’d definitely suggest the 14 inches MacBook pro

The M2 is designed for game developers to use new Metal 3 graphics calls. Not accelerated, that will come later, but at least they can get some coding done while Apple works on ray tracing hardware for the M2 they really wanted to make. Which of these two is better for a university use (take notes, watching videos, using excel and other stuff)?:
-MBA with 512 of SSD and 8gb of RAM
- MBA with 256 gb of SSD (with the storage issue) and 16 Gb of RAM
Considering that I would like to keep this MacBook for at least 5-6 years
Get the bigger storage - more convenient in the long term.

Thank you for the insights. I agree that most people would put processing power 3rd.

Please also take into consideration that Apple will probably support the M1 at least 2 years less than the M2 (OS updates, security updates, etc.). This should affect your buying decision if you plan on keeping your machine for many years. However, if you plan on upgrading every 2-3 years then it might not matter.
That is not correct. Apple will support the M1 for a totally of 7 years with OS Updates, just like they do all other Macs. Their support schedule is clearly stated.

Also, call me crazy but I’m still partial to that wedge shape!

The redesigned MacBook Air looks great. If they put an M1 in it and discounted it I’d buy it. But I’ll have to make die with the M2. I don’t do any hardcore stuff in it so it should be fine.
great video thank you
Glad it was useful. Thank you for being part of the channel! 🙏🏻
so a 16/256 M1 Air with an external SSD would be better and cheaper than a base M2 Air? Interesting
Another awesome video!
Thanks so much, Riley!
Hi, what is the max angle we can tilt the M2 MBA screen to?
Thanks
Hope it was helpful. Thank you for being part of the channel!
I really appreciate you sharing your insights. Thank you for being part of the channel!
at MBA M2 or MBP M2 is not up grade but is down grading .
Good to know. What configuration did you get?
For that price I rather get the 14’ MacBook Pro
One of my favorite laptops ever!
That’s the route I went
@@worldsheaviestjamband93 same here I got it on sale at Best Buy for 1699
M1Air still the best.
Such a good value!
