With Mads on Sail Life winding up his build soon I was worried i wouldn't have boat building to watch! Whew! I'm very much looking forward to seeing this project unwind!
I agree!! This is going to be an incredibly exciting build. Great job guys. You have thought about so many different factors. Can't wait to see the wheels turning on this.... or should that be hulls turning??? Congratulations.
Take it easy. When MJ has launched this Max sometimes in 2023 and Life on the Hulls his megaboat some yrs later, Mads and Ava cannot resist to pop out some babies resulting in a need for some roomier hull(s). In the meantime also Elayna and Riley is about to multiply and will soon start something "big", Sam Holmes will always have to redo whatever he's doing half way, a blasting hurricane will trigger Parley to start another total-repair, and ofc there are a multitude of other semi-pro and diy'ers u can follow.
I just stumbled upon your channel - yippee - can't wait to get caught up on all the previous and future videos! (For whatever it's worth, I enjoy the planning and building more than the globe-trotting).
It's the first time I'm joining your journey, and I would have also made the same decision ! I was really decided for the seawind 1190, but now this seems a better deal. My wife is from Vietnam, I'll propose to her to go build it there. Keep you updated if our plans come to fruition. Meanwhile, I'll be following your build ! Wish you succes and glory !!
I knew you were going to pick that one. It just seemed like a better fit when you were talking about both choices. Can't wait for the build videos. But don't be strangers before that starts.
Great choice, I too suspected this was gonna be it. Something I was thinking about...never built or restored a boat but lots of cars. This time, you are skipping all the tear-down/clean-up/refinish/fix rot/sand phase. Everything you pull out of the container is going to be brand new. Everything will be clean, and you know as well or better than most a lot of the drudgery in the resto process is getting to the day where you can say,"OK. Now we begin the put it back together phase" I think this will help keep you happy and help the motivation if you get to a "funk phase"...I got to that on every car project I have ever done, where I just want to walk away for a couple of months, but once I get the think, fab and assembly portion I get the buzz for the project back. You guys are good at this, are smart, and work well together. I can even see you becoming consultants for others who follow behind you who are building this boat. Your skill set with this boat will be proven, along with the Elements build. I think you two may find a niche source of $ if you want it...
I was pulling for the Max Cruise 42 SC! Wish you both all the luck and am anxious to see the build begin. Thank you for the in-depth discussion of how you made your decision. I appreciate not only the definition of catamaran performance parameters but some actual discussion of values and interconnectivity.
Great boat. Cant wait for the build. I know the feeling, i just finished a 46 Grand Banks rebuild 1989 to my specks . I call it a braine enema. Good Luck.
Looking forward to your future videos, in which you will probably detail, what are the key equipment included or excluded from the 150k? Standing rigging, sails, engines, electronics, kitchen appliances... Thanks a lot for sharing with everyone this new chapter of your sailing life!
Sounds great. But you didn't mention rigging, sails, electronics, kitchen fit-out, water maker, auto-pilot, other hardware. That all included in this price? Solar? Engines? Would love to hear your plans with that part, or what's included. Sounds like fun.
I really like your choice of boat build for the reasons you mentioned. Your arguments seem very logical. As the Max is a relatively unknown boat, it would be wonderful if, you ever get the time one day, to make a comparison between this boat and a Seawind 13.70 in terms of expected performance, accommodation space, and the pros and cons of both designs. Such a comparison will be very educational for all your fans and viewers. I wish you success all the way.
To be perfectly honest, what initially brought me to your channel was the episode when you were forming the hardtop of elements. I loved watching the work you did. The figuring out of the problems and pride in Your craftsmanship. The frustrations of doing everything the way you're supposed to and it just not going right and having to redo all your hard work (it seems that happens with every project I do) . Frankly there are a ton of channels out there of people sailing. Yea yea yea. Sailing sailing sailing....ok your sailing again. Opp. Thats a pretty island (and yes those islands of the southern tip of Britain were gorgeous. I will go there someday just because of your videos) but watching people sailing can get monotonous. Soooo...yes I'm very excited to see you start building a new home/boat. Thankyou. Also....any ideas for the name yet?
From what you said on your previous video and this one, about build time, I am sure you made the right decision. If the build time drags on too long it would be miserable. Apart from that, it looks to be a fabulous boat. I am confident it will be amazing when you have finished it.
Amazing project . Do you think you can build the boat without to put the roof and hull decks on to speed up the work and put roof and hull decks on close to last. Alternatively is there any advantage to that idea due the deep hulls and high roof clearance.Best of luck
This is an exciting time for you. While not an ideal situation with COVID, things are progressing as you wanted towards your catamaran build. It will be very interesting to see it come together. First the outside hull, then how the interior looks. Hopefully it’s as fast as you expected. Don’t burn out doing it.
Excellent choice! Well thought out. Just a thought for you, as a retired project manager I was aware of what I called the 80/20 rule. For many extended projects I found the crews kept their enthusiasm for 80% of the build, and tended to tire of the project for the final 20%, with the associated loss of productivity. To my mind it’s human nature to grow fatigued with the same site, the same challenges and same conditions after time. Given you’re building your home and laying the foundation for your future I suspect you’ll sprint through that 80% wall to the finish line, but be cautious. Enjoy each win and celebrate the major milestones. Best of luck!
Ha! That's what we did with the last build. We prematurely launched the boat thinking that we'd finish some projects on the water... Didn't finish those until we sold :). But it was closer to 98% finished. Matt
Con grats A great choice as it will always look like a factory build with pure lines. I have watched for years your renovation phase of last boat. It was the most interesting of all your videos. I expect your viewership with increase dramatically, and hopefully the google funds as well. Having had four sailboats one a 30ft Tripp design double planked mahogany with an inside of a 24 footer we took a year off with a 5 year old $5,000 and lots of can goods in 1980 and sailed from New England to southern Bahamas and back. Now in my 80's I relive those times by watching people like you two. There are lots of choices of sailing videos, but only a handful of dedicated normal people like you two. Can't wait to see the where and how this will take place. How about southwest FL....I could then see up close how it goes. Might even help a little.
Wow so much to think about. It is obvious you spent a lot of time working this out. A lot to be said for having a major component like the hull formed. I look forward to seeing the process
Congrats! That sounds like a very good decision. I would be interested to learn more about the total cost (engines, rigging, electronics, etc.) and what you think about Electric propulsion Systems 🧐.
That are my questions too! I am really interested in this boat. Am looking for Lagoon 400 Type of Cat, but this looks amazing! And i would have the opportunity to make some things like "i wish to have them".
They should give you some help financially for doing the "how to build" videos for the Max Cruise... it looks like a great choice, it will be fun to watch you guys!
I have been following you two since since I found your site. I have seen all episodes. Your videos are very interesting and I look forward to each new one. Watching you build the Cat is going to be GREAT. Best of luck and hope you don't run into any problems. At 82 years of age, not something I could do. We have been boat less for over 8 years now. Kind of miss it. (a little)
A good choice. Builders/project exhaustion is a real thing. My Father Alan Slater always believed that a project is best done in six months. That was how the PDQ name came about. He designed boats that were quick to build and quick on the water. Having watched you paint and repaint Elements, I am glad to see you will finished surfaces and minute details already taken care of. I can fairly easily suggest that this decision will knock 4-6 months off your build time. My family built 5 catamarans through the seventies and eighties. We then went on to build over 300 boats at PDQ. Hulls, Decks, Rigging was always the easy part. Interior and finish were the labour intensive parts. Systems have now also become an additional and very complex addition to the mix. Good luck and make sure you have a nice place to build in !
I presume you watch life on the hulls, he is self building a large cat. check out the challenges he has fitting the pre made modules. Make sure your chosen assembly site has ample facilities for lifting and installing these modules etc.
I like the idea of the full gel coat and that it will be stronger. Zingara's Cat broke apart, now of course someone had made changes I guess to the structure and that caused the problem, and you guys will be building this yourselves. That though resale wise too, will be really good for you. Because let's face it, you like to do the sailing, but you also like building boats! LOL! Congrats!
I love that the Max will just be a much more standard/professional end result. I would chose it too. I watch just a few boat builds religiously every video. I was planning to watch the cat build one way or the other. But, I am soooo happy you're going with the Max! I think you're 130K+ subscribers will ultimately appreciate your choice as well.
Guys, good luck with this build, as an old fart I envy the drive you have. You only go around this world once and you are definitely making good use of it. --Cheers
Gréât, gréât, gréât!!! 20 years ago I did a KSS cat building course with Derrek Kellsal. It was great and I was ready to start a 47ft project but my boss had other ideas; I ended up on shipbuilding supervision in South Korea. Very pitty that time there were no kit cats available. Now I’m too old to start (74). A solution might be to do it in Vietnam, have to look at it. You did a very vise choice as you need a decent living space and load capacity. Keep in mind that pure sailing is only 10% of your
I like your decision and how you arrived at it. Now I'm sure all of your fans are looking forward to the build phase. And of course following you on your future cruises. Have fun with the construction, all the while dreaming of the places you want to experience.
You guys are nuts. Love to build myself and totally get the joy you get when putting something together for the first time. And in the end you will know that boat top to bottom, inside and out. Looking forward to the videos.
Great choice! Much more updated modern design. So excited to see this build. Somebody is getting an awsone boat kit for Christmas. :) In regards to the price difference you will save that much money in your time and associated costs. Too bad you will miss out on "Oh Glorious Sanding" :) Plus the time savings of outboards over internal engines and the ability to pull them out of the water when sailing ... big win!
Well done, I am talking with Max about another project and just find them to be fantastic to deal with, who knows maybe we will meet up on the water one day.
Did you ever consider moving yourselves to Vietnam and fitting out your cat next door to the factory? MANY advantages, including skilled labour at really affordable prices. AND when you launch, you have all of SE Asia to explore, in my opinion, the best cruising grounds that comes with a guaranteed adventure.
There’s always a compromise, I personally think you’ll have better resale with your choice!? Styling is a little more modern on the Max, but of course that’s also a personal view. There’s no way I’d be going with electric drive. Foam core is the only way to go! Loooking forward to watching your build. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. 😎🇦🇺
How incredibly exciting! Good call on the final choice guys - this looks like a really great balance between cost, performance and practicality for a self-build cat. Just watch that weight! If you can figure out a way to measure the weight of the hull components when they arrive, that would be really good to know (or maybe they already did that) - the target displacement of 7.4 tonnes is ambitious, and means some careful design and process control in the layup. Weigh everything that goes on the boat! Which rig are you going for? The spreaderless mast is tempting for cruising, but I'd miss the self-tacking jib and extra performance of the taller mast - although there's more complexity and extra windage from the spreaders. We've now sailed Easytiger with our new J0 quite a bit, and it's a real pain tacking an overlapping headsail when there's an inner stay to get it around - we end up half-furling it through the tacks - which needs a crew of 3 - but it does boost the performance quite a bit! (And it's very versatile, working well downwind too). We have some news too, we're going to be liveaboards! We're buying a 45ft cat called Star which was on the brokerage at Millbrook when you were in Plymouth, I probably mentioned we were thinking of it - we'll take ownership this week.
Right choice on the Max Cruise because: 1. resale value will be higher, 2. build time will be shorter, 3. design is more comfortable, 4. less physical body strain on the shoulders, 5. wide cockpit doors that fold up, 6. helm position visibility. 7. vertical window angles so less solar heating of cabin. Enjoy building - reminds of me Grand Rapids furniture makers attitude - my aunt was the president's secretary at Baker Furniture for several decades. You did not make a mistake selecting the Max Cruise. Thanks.
You are great team indeed. Wish your dreams to come true. But this will pull a lot of work to do. Great if apart of nice 3-D pictures the boat is properly "calculated" by clever architect and clever engineering team + it will be superb to have also the boat built precisely to these calculations. Good luck!
With regards to the heat transferring thru the glass they have made a lot of advancement with Ceramic tints perhaps worth looking into when it comes time to installing the glass panels? Of course aggressive conditions at sea will need to be considered with any tint films? Subscribed and Thumbs Up on the video looking forward to a really cool build.
I'm considering building Max Cruise 42SC as well now! I hope you document all the fabrication and assembly during the building process to make my build easier!
Listening to you forming your decision , the Max Cruise for your use, does sound the better choice. Have you found a place to build yet ? All the best, Hal
The max seems like a great boat. I was going to build a Schionning or a Grainger before I bought the hurricane damaged catamaran I'm restoring. I would love to come check out your boat once you start. If your want in build in Florida, you may want to look into the yard where I'm doing the restoration of my 44' Antares.
Check out life on the hulls awesome cat building or the composite shop same builder. ✌️
Agree.....will enjoy watching your build after following Sail Life the past year or so.
Take it easy. When MJ has launched this Max sometimes in 2023 and Life on the Hulls his megaboat some yrs later, Mads and Ava cannot resist to pop out some babies resulting in a need for some roomier hull(s). Bulls eye. A no brainer build. I envy you. Enjoy the build.
I knew you were going to pick that one. It just seemed like a better fit when you were talking about both choices. Can't wait for the build videos. But don't be strangers before that starts.
DITTO. Even said so in the previous video. LOL It only makes sense !!
Looking forward to watching the process of building this cat.
wasn't even close. the max is the clear winner.
Great choice, I too suspected this was gonna be it. Something I was thinking about...never built or restored a boat but lots of cars.

The best thing about building it yourself is you know ever bit of the boat. Take care of yourselves and be safe out there.
I was pulling for the Max Cruise 42 SC! Wish you both all the luck and am anxious to see the build begin. Thank you for the in-depth discussion of how you made your decision. I appreciate not only the definition of catamaran performance parameters but some actual discussion of values and interconnectivity.
Cant wait for this build, please vlog as much as you can, intending to do a build myself in approx 18 months!
Great boat. Cant wait for the build. I know the feeling, i just finished a 46 Grand Banks rebuild 1989 to my specks . I call it a braine enema. Good Luck.

Glad you made your decision. Can't wait to see this process get started. I will miss your video's on the water. Wonderful.
When you guys said (10 months less) build time that would have sealed the deal for me. Look forward to seeing the build videos.
Can't wait to see the build process as it progresses.
Thumbed, for saving yourselves, and us the agony of sanding boat hulls for a year.
Good choice. Cheers
Can’t wait to see the boat rise from the packaging.
Well done both of you!
Looking forward to the progress!! I requested a quote for the Max Cruise 42 a few weeks ago and they responded right away. Nice design!
Do tell.....!!! What is the basic pricing?
Yes Id like an idea too!
Yep. Whats the base price?
Mention to them MJ Sailing they might get a discount and will cost you nothing
Yes nothing makes any sense unless you include the prices.
Sounds great. But you didn't mention rigging, sails, electronics, kitchen fit-out, water maker, auto-pilot, other hardware. That all included in this price? Solar? Engines? Would love to hear your plans with that part, or what's included. Sounds like fun.
They mentioned that is the hull price...all rigging, etc is a lot more, especially sails will be upwards of 50,000 depending on inventory.
Nice .. super cool ....all good we will keep watching
Excellent explanation. Really appreciate the time you put into it. Very easy to understand your thought process. Thank You.
Well thought out. Can't stop watching
Good choice. Look very exciting. I Like Jessica's new Hair style.
CE rating and build time gets my vote.
Looking forward to watching the build
To be perfectly honest, what initially brought me to your channel was the episode when you were forming the hardtop of elements. I loved watching the work you did. The figuring out of the problems and pride in Your craftsmanship. Absolutely a straightforward understandable description of how this will work out good luck
Wishing you all the very best. Looking forward to the building videos.
The boat you have chosen is absolutely beautiful! Looking forward to all the build videos and then the sailing, good luck.
Only found your channel when the first container arrived. Enjoying going back and seeing how you got to that point. Much food for thought!
Amazing project . Do you think you can build the boat without to put the roof and hull decks on to speed up the work and put roof and hull decks on close to last. Alternatively is there any advantage to that idea due the deep hulls and high roof clearance.Best of luck

First the outside hull, then how the interior looks. Hopefully it’s as fast as you expected. Don’t burn out doing it.
Can you speak to the daggerboard vs. the non-daggerboard models of the same boat?
I am excited for you! I think you have made the right decision, the Max is better designed with their molding process. Be happy, be safe.
Wonderful video! I would LOVE to build a similar vessel. Thanks for your time and cannot wait to watch your progress!
Excellent choice! Well thought out.
Just a thought for you, as a retired project manager I was aware of what I called the 80/20 rule. Sounds like the one I would have picked also! Great choice!!
Have you watched Life On The Hulls? Very inspiring guy building his own catamaran in Australia.
Agreed
Con grats A great choice as it will always look like a factory build with pure lines. I have watched for years your renovation phase of last boat. It was the most interesting of all your videos. I expect your viewership with increase dramatically, and hopefully the google funds as well. Glad you choose Max 42. Super happy for you guys, can't way to see the process of the build.
Exciting times ahead!..nice cat!
Who scrolls forward anyway!!??..👍🏴
I am impressed at how well you did your research!
Did you decide on outboards or inboards? Sounded like you're going with daggerboards rather than mini keels?
I like your choice. The molded parts will be very helpful. Plus I sure you will do a great job. Elements was beautiful and this one will be to.
Great choice! Very exciting and daunting at the same time.
Wow so much to think about. It is obvious you spent a lot of time working this out. A lot to be said for having a major component like the hull formed. I look forward to seeing the process
Excellent details detailed. Thanks for this logical, well reasoned explanation. Splendid choice.

They should give you some help financially for doing the "how to build" videos for the Max Cruise... it looks like a great choice, it will be fun to watch you guys!
This is gonna be fun. Can't wait for the build to start. I think you made a good choice.
Great discussion, great video, great great great.......
I love watching your boat builds! Keep them coming!
Sweet space ship........make it so number one.......killer lines, fast has the comforts......big pimpin

Have a look at the Vetus E-Line Pod 100 electric drive for your new boat - it’s a very appealing drive solution !
Look forward to the building!
Good choice. For so many reasons. Build quality being the main...

Ohh yea. Great choice on the cat. When you first showed it, it impressed me and it was my choice
awesome ..JUST AWESOME !!! all the best keep on truckinn....
Looking forward to your Cat build videos.
Great video. Looking forward to the build. Fantastic if you can do it in two years. So cool as a couple that you know what you want to go for.

Brilliant choice and really is the cheaper option in the long run. I would not have gone with out boards but that’s a personal choice. Ken
? They both have daggerboards if that is what you meant. - Matt
I knew it!!! I will follow you all the way.
Huge project! I hope this catamaran gives you a great and peaceful life. 😊💪💪
Thanks.
You got this figured out. Good choice on the selection. If I can score a cat, or a sailboat. Washer is a good thing!
Good luck to you both. I'm sure you will do well. I look forward to the project videos.
Hi Matt and Jess, fantastic and well done. Look forward to the new series of video’s on the build. Kind regards Gavin
Congrats! Max Cruise all the way. Can't wait to see it all happen!
Can't wait to see you get started. I am excited for you. Elements was such a nice boat. Max cruise seems to be a much better choice.
You are great team indeed. Wish your dreams to come true. But this will pull a lot of work to do. Great if apart of nice 3-D pictures the boat is properly "calculated" by clever architect and clever engineering team + it will be superb to have also the boat built precisely to these calculations. Good luck!
Looks like you made the right decision
Good choice it seems. Good luck on the build.
Hello Hal! Yes, we have found a build site, and we'll reveal that next week with a Real Time Update. :)
I am so excited for you both. Can’t wait until you splash. 🤗
Sounds great! Excited for you guys. Looking forward to watching you guys build it out.
