A Drive Through London North Peckham (The Five Estates)

- Sunny London drive through the 5 regenerated Peckham Estates.
The 'Five Estates' in SE15 consists of Camden Estate, Sumner Estate, North Peckham Estate, Willowbrook Estate and Gloucester Grove Estate. All 5 estates are/were located in the London Borough of Southwark with North Peckham Estate being the largest and most notorious of the 5.
Camden Estate and North Peckham Estate was linked by aerial second floor walkways, with the ground floors being car parks. You could literally walk from Peckham Road to Gloucester Grove Estate without touching the ground. Gloucester Grove Estate, Willowbrook Estate and Sumner Estate were all separate estates but they all made up the '5' in the regeneration.
Back in the 60s, North Peckham was redeveloped with many high-rise flats (the 5 estates included) to rehouse people from old run down houses. It was a popular destination upon it's completion offering families a modern high quality standard of living.
But by the late 70s, North Peckham became a place containing a high crime rate due to a high level of unemployment and a lack of opportunities.
A change was needed (and demanded by the residents) so by the late 90s/early 00s, a £290million regeneration took place. The 5 estates was demolished. Gloucester Grove Estate is the only one one of the five that still retains it's original look but it has been part demolished and part refurbished.
In the year 2000, whilst the regeneration was taking place, a 10 year old boy called Damiola Taylor was stabbed and killed on the North Peckham Estate by teenagers.
North Peckham gangs dates back to the 70s when ethnic minorities such as Jamaicans and Africans was being housed on the estate. Initially each estate had their own gangs but by the 90s, members from different estates would link to form sets.

I lived on Shanklin Way on the NP from 1983-1989, or should I say survived it lolol
I thought my place was gone but I think that it's still standing next to the second huge elevator shaft...wow, can't believe it still exists! I got mugged coming out of the elevator when I turned onto the walkway late one night on my way home from work ffs...spent weeks trawling the local pawn shops in the hopes of getting my jewellery back 🥴
There were a hell of a lot of fires there, especially in the garages back then...bloody nightmare
Well it all looks so so much better now so that's great...nice to see the Globe pub is still going we used to drink in there...

The huge constrast between now (2020's) and then from the early 1990's, the few times when I visited that area.

Sumner estate no longer exists. Swathe’s of the North Peckham@Pentridge and Cronin street still do. Gloucester Grove still exists@Chandler Way and St George’s Way respectively
Wait I live near here so before these houses was flats and it was called north peckham??
