Someone gave me the Illustrated life. That was before I was sketching. They gave it to me as an exercise for scrapbooking. So amazing you are the author.
I've only comes across James Jean for the first time in the last year or so. It's really wonderful to see his earlier work and his sketchbooks. Wonderfully presented--thank you!
So you’re telling me he colored his drawings with acrylics he found on a dumpster on his neighborhood??!!! Omfg one day i will be able to coax any media given at hand, this is gonna be my ultimate goal in art starting from today.
IDK if you still dont know but wrong Fable, he meant the comic book series one, the only Fable game thats based on the comic i know is Telltales' Wolf Among Us.
Thanks so much for showing the hand drawn early work of James Jean, the ones that are published and so rare to find now. James Jean has such fine skill with the figure and make narrative art, art that tells multi-layers of subjective stories.
I had been watching the odd sketchbook video here and there, then came across this video, I recognized the name. Turns out I have your book An Illustrated Life sat on my bedside table as we speak! This channel is great, it compounds everything I'm looking for. great production and presentation.
absolute fantastic detail at 11:11, just amazing i love how the most detail/ shading is focussed around faces, whereas clothes and buildings are simpler - really gives a clear focal point
Thank you so much for sharing (I will be getting his books). My good friend attended SVA and he also became a famous artist. The highlight of the dot.com era assisted great illustrators such as Frenchman, Pete Lardy among others (also studied at SVA). I had the pleasure to hang with these individuals due my close friend who was well known in the industry. I attended SVA night classes but at last, I was no where near the talent of those great individuals.
That was a wonderful walk through and introduction to a fabulous artist. I also found your insights and observations interesting. Thank you for sharing.
An amazing talent. Much of his line work looks like he was heavily influenced by Bob Zeiring. But then, there aren't many of us illustrators who aren't.
Fantastic works. Is there any mention of his influences because I am seeing Hieronymus Bosch and some figments from The Garden of Earthly Delights particularly? Loving the reviews btw, especially as I am trying to get back to my drawing after years of concentrating on home educating my son(s).
Would you be kind enough to list the art supplies. If anything post. Photo of them. I’d really appreciate your help. Great content and def need his book. Hopefully one day.
execelente Comentario. Demuestras mucha pasión en tu trabajo como curador, y comunicando en tu canal de youtube. Gracias por compartir tus libros de James Jean. SIn duda es un autor del que se puede aprender mucho. Saludos
It's probably just some notes, description of the object you want to draw. I've seen many people doing this before, Cesar Santos for example. You can check the interview with Cesar Santos on Proko's channel. He explained what's the purpose of the writings in his sketchbooks.
I've asked this question many times for these kind of ink and pen work. How the hell do they have it come out so clean, confident and gestural, all at the same time? I can do direct pen on paper, but it never is this clean, or it becomes too rigid. I feel so frustrated. Do they start with one part of the body, say the torso, and then compare that to another part and then draw that? Because when I do these kind of drawings I like to capture the gesture first, then the masses, then likeness. But with direct pen and paper, this way of doing it ends up messy. What am I doing wrong?
i know this is old comment but, i believe if one ain't got the talent, then at least one could gamble on hard work, studying & practicing hours per day
You kinda answered your own question when you said confidence. You have to practice to the point where you know anatomy backwards and forwards. You can get to a point where you are confident enough of your knowledge on anatomy that your drawing doesn't look muddied. However, I will say, I am familiar with the type of ballpoint pen he uses, they are called SKB ballpoints (just google it). They have the finest point I have ever used on a ballpoint. You can achieve a really light line if you use light pressure on the pen. I highly recommend.
I started drawing directly on pen 2 years ago. My line quality has improved a lot and I’m more confident, but it’s still not the best. Art takes a long time to master. Pages and pages of book need to he filled.
To me your voice seems to be imbued with so much reverence and passion it makes me admire you equally
James Jean is one of my favorite artist, i own 4 of his art books they are all beautiful
Thanks for showing those, I've been a fan of James Jean, long time. Nicely done.

His work just blows me away! This man is god

he is Always creating Interesting pieces, the amount of detail in his work can be daunting for most artists
happy to find this amazing artist because of his "the shape of water" poster
James jeans art actually brought me to Kim jung hi who became my top influence
An amazing talent. Much of his line work looks like he was heavily influenced by Bob Zeiring. But then, there aren't many of us illustrators who aren't.
I'm pretty shure he uses gouache instead of inks for those portraits.
Just in case someones wondering.. :)
Great vid, lovely artist!

Serena Lewis
You spelled hard working and skillful wrong
I’m curious to know what the lines and chunks of text/script say in the drawings?
