I fish the river 30 miles north of that spot all the time around cape girardeau, mo. I pretty well live on the river year round. Catching fish in the river is a challenge when the water is ripping. Always keep a healthy respect for the Mississippi!
Got to be bittersweet to find those conditions when you get to a bucket list location. The important thing, you CAN go back. Enjoyed your trip, thanks, Dave
I live in Cape Girardeau county..I do my best fishing in spring in a little creek off of the Mississippi River called Apple Creek. I've caught more giant fish than I could ever count
Just started watching a lot of your videos I know you looking for them likes and subscribers I subscribed. Would be curious on what kind of anchor you were using and how hard it is for you to pull up. I fish the Ohio frequently
When I was 10 my dad and uncles fished the Miss. alot, but not until late summer early fall, by that time the river has calmed down abit more, we fished the New Boston area, alot of islands around there and we'd find an island we could land a boat on and fish the tail area of the river and catch alot of different species, cat, drum, gar, bass etc... but you always had your head on a swivel looking for debris or barges heading down the river, stay safe my friend!!
Looking back from the beginning of your Journey as catfish Dave you come along way giving us our lesson true lesson and cat fishing you made us understand things more clearly and you speak from the heart with great fishing skills. Thanks for being who you are, Professional!
Putting a boat in the Mississippi for the first time is quite the eye opening experience for most people. It’s a challenge to fish due to the conditions and gear requirements, but the quality of fish are second to none!!!! Dave if you’re ever down in Louisiana I’d be glad to take you out and show you around. Hopefully put you on some pigs!!!!! Bon peche my friend
I only fished flood stage. Way back in the flooded trees. We mostly caught 4 and 5 pounders on congealed blood for bait. But running those lines at 3 AM. That was so fun. My buddy is dead now, I'm not, but I miss him and those fish. Thanks for those memories!
I injoy all your fishing videos I live in KY I used to use the hummingbird fish finders. But I have switched over to Garmin they come with 17000 lake maps on them and to me they are easier to use. Thanks again for sharing your fishing trips.
Use to bank fish the Mississippi up near Memphis on the Arkansas side many years ago I wanna do it again before I die. I loved back then. Awesome video Dave.
I ran the upper, and lower Mississippi, Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, green, Arkansas and Cumberland rivers in my career on the towboats. I fell in love with the water years ago and still do to this day. I guess it had something to do with growing up on the Tennessee River as a kid.
My wife worked at a grocery store in Osceola,AR back in the 90s. Two guys came in and weighed a flathead they had caught on the Mississippi River. It weighed 108 pounds.
I fish the Mississippi from Alton, Illinois up to Grafton and into the Illinois River, but from my kayak, so I feel your pain. So far this year it’s been a bit rough out there.
yeah dave, thats my boyhood home river and i miss it, best times of my life fishing on that river, you did well for not fishing it much and june is really the time to start, after flood season, we fished the small rivers around when she was up and rolling, still good fishing
SO ILL boy here! Loved about 30 minutes from west Frankfort. Love the videos and all the information you share! I used to work on the Mighty miss and saw a lot of weird and sadsh!t!!!! Glad you were safe and good luck next time
Your one of the most knowledgeable fisherman around I Salute you for your patience and love of fishing , you could have your own fishing show the right agent needs to come alone
Dave enjoyed the video!Brings back memories when I was small. My grand parents lived in Wickliffe just up the road from Ancient Bury City behind Chris Dinner. Used to fish the big muddy every summer I went up there. In middle Tennessee now still got family in K Town where you are. Thank you for your time and energy you give us! Great video!!!!
I live in West Tennessee not far from the mighty Mississippi River, be careful on that water uncle Dave. Keep your life vest on at all times. You should try the Hatchie river while you're close to west Tennessee it flows into the Mississippi.
@@joshchoate9499 Until a few years ago, I fished a lot at Reelfoot. I even had a lake boat many years ago. I lived in Union City so it was a short drive to the lake or river. I'll admit that I have been scared for my life several times when fishing or hunting, and incidents on the Mississippi probably rank near the top.

Good video bass fishing has slowed for me started cat fishing some me my wife and brother and grandson have a good time catching them no big one like you catch but fun
Most of the large rivers like the great Mississippi and even here on the Illinois river, when the muddy rivers are flooding, the cats are usually up in the flooded lands. Bank fishing is great at those times... boating, way to dangerous, especially for those who don't wear a lifejacket Dave. Mississippi river claims many lives each year, when it's not flooded. I fish the Missouri River and the Mississippi Rivers . Early spring is not good on the Mississippi. Mid summer when the water goes down and the flow slows is best . Love the big blues
I have a river house across from Hamburg Illinois on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River and every year someone loses their life because they think it won’t happen to me. It’s no joke ! Glad to see you having fun and respecting the fact that when the river is on the rise it’s dangerous also the best time to fish. Last year my biggest flathead was 58 pounds on rod and real, If your ever up this way your more than welcome to come hang out with us we have docks and a place to crash.
Just a few more years and will be able to retire to a modest houseboat. Fishing the Miss, visiting fam in Iowa in summer, head south when it gets cold. Maybe round Lousiana to south Texas via gulf. Think Huckleberry Finn/ Tom Sawyer.... I grew up (sorta lol) running midwest rivers even in flood, but the Miss? Am looking forward to spending time there.
Years ago you made a bank video at the Tennessee State park at Pickwick. You should come back this way some time. There’s plenty of bait behind the dam and great fishing in the lake or behind the dam. I live in Mississippi by I’m only 30 minutes from Pickwick I’ve fished it all my life. Here in Mississippi we have one of the best places in the country for flatheads in my opinion it doesn’t get talked about much. But it’s called the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway. I highly recommend all three places Dave, thanks enjoyed the video.
the towboat men do care and have to dodge small boats all the time. hard to do sometimes when your 1600 foot long plus. but we do care. i spent 22 years on that river and others on towboats. not a place for greenhorns .

I live in Louisiana, MO, little town right on the Mississippi so I do a lot of fishing on that river. Mostly from the bank, but the few times I've been out on the boat, it's a little nerve racking, especially when it's high.
Used to fish oke Miss when I lived in central I'll. Fella I worked for had a fairly nice cabin cruiser boat at a marina 9n a slough of the river . We drove 2 hrs to the river from Matoon Ill. Indiana was on the far bank. We had licences for both states to avoid any possible issues. Largest catfish I was part of fishing for was a 48 lb flat head. One time we were fishing a big pipe from a food processing plant , there was something like lard flowing from this pipe all the fish we caught were chicken full of this stuff! We let everything go that we caught most times when we fished on Ole Miss. That was in the early 90's I do miss fishing in Ill. And pheasant and deer hunting on corn and soybean fields!
Been a lot of rain in the south this year. Doesn't surprise me that it is up. I fished Bull Shoals in northern Arkansas in the late spring when the water level was high.
Them dang Asian carp are no joke. They have took over the Tennessee river and tributaries in West Tennessee. My brother had a 22 pounder jump in the boat with him the other day

The river stage at Cairo is at about 40' that means it is at minor flood stage, at 47' it is in moderate flood stage and at 53' it is in major flood stage. The record for the highest reading ever is over 61.5'' the levee on the Missouri side that protects Bird's Point Floodway is blown to allow water to flow into an area designated for such events. That happened in 2011, 177,000 acres were flooded. That same year over 80% of that area had a crop harvested on it. The Ohio River at Cairo is bigger than the upper Mississippi is at Cairo, quite a lot bigger. I worked as a deckhand on the river for a year. I was on it in flood, on it when it was very low, on the upper when the river above Alton, Ill. was frozen over. From just below New Orleans to St. Paul, in one year I got to see most of the Mississippi, but I was not there in a record flood like the ones we have seen many times since 1973. I have seen many trees come down, a small boat has no business being in the channel in flood stage when a tow comes by. If you think it is tough out there at 40' I made my first trip on a tow boat when it was higher than that, I was too inexperienced to realize it was dangerous
I've been in the ocean just a couple times. Once I can't see land anymore some high level anxiety kicks in. All I was thinking was "I cant swim back if something goes wrong".
It takes a real fishermen to admit when a body of water beats us , it has happened to me many times , weather , flood stages , you did catch catfish , that is why you are catfish Dave , sining out , I have a tremendous respect for you Dave ,,,
Years ago we had planned a trip to Tunica to see what all these casinos were about. Not much of a gambler so the wife played the slots and I went and hunted a fishing license. I drove around near the casinos until I found an area I could fish from the bank. I git to lines in and had so e small bites but about 4 hours later I hooked I to something that was really big. I was using 50 pound berkly big game line with a 40 pound leader. Not sure what it was while it was pealing line but I worked him down and got him within 40 feet of the bank. It was a huge blue and I mean huge. Biggest cat I ha e ever hooked and I have caught some big ones. The fish finally gave up and I was pulling him out of the current line he rolled and I really got a good look at him. Best guess 40-50 pounds. I just about got my gloved hand in his mouth and as I went to grab him there was a small piece of rebar that I didn't see and the caught the rebar and he was gone. The mighty Mississippi conqured me as well that day but it didn't conjure my wife....should have played slots.....she won 5600.00! Dave you are right....never seen current like that and I fish big waters like Guntersville, Wheeler, Wilson and Pickwick. These sections of water are mud puddles compared to the Mississippi. Great video Dave. I will say this.....you should have had a life jacket on. That river is super dangerous. No way I would even think about fishing at night in a boat on that system.
No sir, gotta go to some oxbows or parts of the old Mississippi River. Fishing the main channel with your setup is like driving a go kart thru New York City.
You when that river's flooded I was stationed at blytheville Arkansas in the northeast corner of Arkansas. I couldn't wait until the River flooded you go out there and find you some soybean Fields that's got some pretty good Creeks running in the river where the water backs up out of the river up the creek and out in the fields. Those catfish will swarm them Bean fields. You'll be amazed how many catfish is up in them Bean fields

I have seen many trees come down, a small boat has no business being in the channel in flood stage when a tow comes by. If you think it is tough out there at 40' I made my first trip on a tow boat when it was higher than that, I was too inexperienced to realize it was dangerous
At or above flood stage there is not a more dangerous body of water than the Mighty Mississippi. Glad you made it safe.
Had the same thoughts the first time I went to big water, "do I really want to go out there". Its intimidating the first time
I've been in the ocean just a couple times. Once I can't see land anymore some high level anxiety kicks in. All I was thinking was "I cant swim back if something goes wrong".
I live in MS and I have seen the MS river at the top of the levee on 3 occasions.
This is close to my neck of the woods, I have never fished the Mississippi. I fish the Ohio, Tennessee, Clarks, Cumberland, and the Tradewater.
Thank you so very much Dave. Have a wonderful day. 💕
Just letting You know, I have been over that stretch of the river many times near Cairo IL.

Great video! I love fishing the Mississippi here in Memphis.
Love the video
I grew up fishing the Mississippi river and also work on the rescue squad and it hard to find a missing person so just be safe and respect the river
You went for it and in the process caught catfish from the Mississippi River. You didn’t fail.
The river conquered you? You survived, but you really need to utilize a PFD when on the Mississippi River!
This is dan I got friends near you I’m in Greensboro ga love your show been watchin 2 years now
My son a friend of ours and myself fished the Mississippi last May . Caught fish in my 18’x60” boat. I want go back that river scared me .
I have fished a spot on the Mississippi where 32 ounces wouldn't get you on bottom and it wasn't during high water conditions!
come down to Rosedale, MS and fish. just be careful of Victoria Bend. come mid summer to early fall, July-September.
