Seems like it’s a leak but…. Everything is new and replaced. Egr cooler, gaskets, pipe behind it, all new. Turbo has been changed twice… When it first started happening, Volkswagen dealership said it was the turbo. So we replaced it with a 2nd hand one. Nothing changed so we thought the turbo was a dud and brought it back. The guy said he had another one from a vehicle with 50,000km that he’d driven 2 months ago and knew it was fine. So we put in a 3rd turbo. Nothing changed. We’d brought it to another mechanic and they checked all the vacuum lines and replaced a vacuum pump which may or may not have potentially been problematic. They spent 20 hours apparently looking at it and knocked the invoice down from aud$4500 to $2300…. So it doesn’t seem like the turbo because if we disconnect the egr cooler and the egr, the noise goes away and it just makes a normal turbo sound. But…. We don’t know if maybe with the egr connected there’s a pressure buildup that is creating the whine or a whine in the turbo? So….. this has been ongoing since January and costing a lot of money. We want to just bring it to someone who can fix it but the options are very few….. Not sure any of this is related or relevant- We put a 2nd hand dpf unit in it (because when I bought the vehicle, the old one had a hole burnt in it and had been like that for a long time). 2 weeks later, a sensor failed (manifold air pressure sensor) that caused the car to go into limp mode randomly. We took it to VW and they finally found it to be the sensor but also said the dpf was giving us a pressure code. They did a forced regeneration of the dpf. The car then ran fine for 2 weeks until a faint whistle started under load. It only got stupid loud like it is now, when we changed the turbo assembly the 1st time and disturbed the gasket on the egr cooler.
