On assembling the door face boards, I believe you would have been better served with using 4-each Pipe clamps to hold the board tight to each other before screwing them onto the door frame. They would as you know shrink with age. i do like how you put foam between the cross braces.
Buuuut, the Faux exterior hinges look weird. If it were mine I would take them off since they are non-functional and make the outside of the door face look too busy, what with the Iron clovo's installed.
And since this is a rural cabin with an elevated porch, why not have the door swing outward. It would make for a far more secure cabin against a Bear trying to "Push it in".
Another trick to keep Bears away is to take scrape Plywood and but 2-1/2 screws randomly through the face and lay these points up under the windows and door while your away.

Not a record, in the 1980s we use 4x6x8' to make a 6" thick door... upstate NY, in the finger lakes, used all thread to squeeze it together then we squared it with a plain, I guess, we wanted the door as thick as the walls as we could... Which was 8"ish round lumber, I never liked that the door swung inward. But grandpa was worried about getting snowed in. The other benefit to it swinging inside was the door was so heavy, he put a wheel on the end to hold up the weight. I will bet money people have made thicker, we wanted it so no one could chop thru it to break in when we were not there most of the year. I do admit your door is better looking, we used home made hardware to make these massive deadbolts

Everyone should have a tire repair kit in their vehicle. But for anyone off roading, they are required. Multiple ways to patch a puncture and multiple ways to get air into it. Worst case, leave the screw in the tire. The door looks great by the way. The cabin is really coming together. Already has some character!

Our Grandfather built a very think and heavy (external) door's on our cabin, his reason was to keep bears out, they ripped through a 3" door.. He built them out of 3 layers of 2 x 4's out side's vertical the middle horizontal, they were all glued and pegged together with half inch dole rods, and they are very very heavy there are 5 heavy duty hinges with 5" screws.. he also built very strong storm shutters, that were almost 3" thick with metal bands strapped around them.. I replaced those doors a few years ago, I used a heavy steel door and put 1/4" wood paneling over them, to give it a rustic wood look.. My wife & I both love your channel.. Be Blessed...

Not that I'm expecting too much but *you* did say you were gonna be around for a long time so I'm just thinking of things you could consider doing... A good reason to keep all of you around, I think... We love ya!

The iron nails you used were actually just nails in the olden days, with a wide head to prevent them from sinking into the wood from the front, and they were longer than the thickness of the door so that they stuck through and were then bent back on the backside to prevent anyone from pulling them out. There are videos out here that show you how it is done if I didn't manage to explain it well. What you have there is just a prop to make the door look awesome, and you have surely accomplished that;) Great job guys! Appreciate the content!

Looking good! The original iron heads on old doors where riveted nails going clean through to the other side and peened over both ways. They held the door together - thus there were so many of them - a multi layer door being far stronger and fire resistant.

Just as a note of precaution: Be careful where you place the brush and rags that you use to apply Linseed oil; they have been known to spontaneously combust. The door looks fantastic!

@@TheOutsiderCabin for future builds, there are three naturally drying oils (linseed, tung, walnut), tung and walnut don’t spontaneously combust…. Ever…. If you still want to use linseed, than get the raw oil as it doesn’t have the Japanese (chemical) driers in it like what you buy in the cans, and is much less likely to combust spontaneously…
Also, historically, certain other things have been mixed with drying oils to make them seal wood better, pine tar and turpentine (turpentine was used to thin the mixture and get it deep into the wood instead of just sitting on top)especially…. they even used to use them to protect the wood in the old fishing fleets. Mix the oil, pine tar, and pine turpentine, then slowly heat to a boil and use warm to seal the wood….

YESSS I used penofin oil on my deck. Worked well after dark and dropped two rags. The next day I forgot to go double check and wasn't home much of the hot sunny day. Luckily my neighbor happened to be in her yard and noticed the flames.

I could live in that year round, no problem. Remember when you trim the door to fit, that on the latch side to cut it at angle so the swing doesn't hit and drag on the jam. It will be even more pronounced with a door that thick.

In Europe, during Medieval times, the claveaus were made to go through the doors and werbe bent over on the interiors of each door. A 7 or 8 inch claveau was required to go through the door. Each spike was hand forged by tan iron smith. Very expensive to have that many. The uuse was for protection by breaking through. Two very heavy duty pieces of wood were slid in on iron trestles, each having a trestle on either side, thereby giving even more protection fron break-ins. Keep up the great content. 😎😎

    • @bapi6643

The claveaus are also referred to as door nails. They were considered a sign of wealth due to their cost. The were bent over, or “deadened” on the inside so they could not be easily removed. Hence the term “deader than a door nail “

Mesopotamia is the basis of architecture. We didn t invent much since this rising up of civilisation. And building comfortable homes.
Today new age make me laugh re discovering all what was current recepts of "good building".
And they show it as "modern environmentalist skills".! "sustainable technics" bla bla bla.
Except furnitures they invented everything. (they just began to make very simole coffers... To keep safe their cuneiform tablets where they archived their worthies by very first writing.. Counting).
