  • In this video, Neil Tappin is joined by Golf Monthly rules expert Fergus Bisset to talk through the 5 golf rules that are surprisingly vague or unclear. Whether it's determining if your ball is in a hazard, declaring a provisional or understanding what constitutes advice, there are actually quite a few grey areas in the rule book that you need to be careful of.

    An interesting issue with stroke and distance, when you have not played a provisional, is that with golf courses as busy as they are it's almost impossible to do. By the time you have searched for your ball for your 3mins, the group behind you is now waiting for you to play and get out of their way from the spot you played your previous shot.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 9 дней назад

      @Stevenewmansa this is why many clubs/courses have implemented the fairly new Model Local Rule that lets you Drop on the nearest Edge of the Fairway for a 2 Stroke Penalty.
      The 2 Strokes equalizes a Provisional Ball played from the original Distance.

    • @CarlosCobelas
      @CarlosCobelas 3 дня назад

      That's why it's much better to play Stableford rather than Stroke. You can take zero points on the hole and move to the next tee

    The thing to add about deciding on Known or Virtually Certain (KVC) is that 95% judgement depends on taking in all readily available information. That could be the terrain features, the trajectory of the ball and how much energy you estimate it had, whether you were looking into the sun, the testimony of any other competitors or spectators, the wind strength, etc. If taking all readily available information into account you believe you meet that 95% threshold, then you have KVC. (Note - not saying this needs to take a long time - just be cognizant you're considering all easily ascertainable factors)

    Question: In the case of where you stuffed the 4 iron out of bounds from the impossible rough, where would you then take your penalty drop from? Back into that spot?

    In regards to rule 4, I’ve seen videos (not sure if on this channel) where the ball is on the cart path side of a tree stopping traditional swing so player flips the club to hit with their non-dominant hand so that there feet are on the cart path and they get a drop. From the description of rule 4, that is breaking the rule but the video swore that it was legal to do.

      Clearly unreasonable.

  • @dominicflaherty
    @dominicflaherty 17 дней назад +3

    For the situation of standing on the path, wouldn't your nearest point of total relief from the path be further into the rough and not on the side closer to the fairway / hole, so this would not be an advantage ?

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 17 дней назад +1

      With the Scenario shown here, you are Correct because of the Width of that Path and Direction of Play on the Hole.

    • @FergusBisset-f4h
      @FergusBisset-f4h 13 дней назад +1

      You're spot on. If nearest point of relief is in the rough then that is where the drop has to be taken - It might well not be an advantage. Sometimes people forget that I think.

    Is that why people smoke cigars while playing, to determining wind?

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 17 дней назад +1

      As a Smoker, Tobacco Products, and now Vapes, are considered "Equipment", so not legal to use for "wind", thus no different than the Hankie or Ribbon as mentioned here.

    Conclusion! Golf rules need rewriting and simplified... especially as stroke play & matchplay have different interpretations of the same rules... It's ridiculous.....

  • @nevillecoleske6368
    @nevillecoleske6368 17 дней назад

    Does the advice rule count in match play situations too? What about showing a player what line to putt on?

    • @FergusBisset-f4h
      @FergusBisset-f4h 13 дней назад

      In match play. It's fine to give your playing partner in four ball or foursomes advice.... In singles match play the advice rule applies. But, if your opponent has a similar putt to you and gives you the line, that's fine - that's just rub of the green.

    When taking a provisional ball, I thought you should tell your playing partners what ball you are using?

    • @FergusBisset-f4h
      @FergusBisset-f4h 13 дней назад +1

      You don't have to. But you do have to be able to identify your ball.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 10 дней назад +1

      @Astro_Gardener Courtesy, for if they find a Ball during a Search they know what they are looking for.
      The Imperative is for you to be able to accurately Tell the Difference between the Original Ball and the Provisional Ball if they end up close to each other.

    How about using my Apple Watch that tells me the wind direction?

    • @AL-YT-comment
      @AL-YT-comment 13 дней назад

      It doesn’t. In the same way it doesn’t tell what the weather is. It uses forecasts of the direction and weather. If we believed the weather app and its sunny forecast, we would have standing in the rain for our BBQ at the weekend, we didn’t get wet because we looked outside and saw the rain.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170

      @jamesroberts7489 information about location of Penalty Areas and OB comes under "Public Information" and is NOT "Giving Advice".
      Same goes for things such as "this is a Dogleg Left Hole", or "I am standing on the 150 Yard Marker."
      See the USGA/R&A Definition of 'Advice'.
