That was a great reaction guys. And amazingly, the book is even more horrifying. Nikki was so right about PTSD. All the victors are absolutely broken because of the games. It really is a unique story.
Had a couple turkey's growing up. They walked side by side in unison, would turn at the same time. They would chase the shit out of me together as well. Long story short, in my experience those two we're assholes.

nikki and steven - just a heads up - the drawing of rue on the floor is what peeta did as his chosen skill, not something the gamemakers did to psych katniss out, in case you were unsure of where that came from :) great reaction, i'm glad you're enjoying the series!
Donald Sutherland is unparalleled as President Snow, someone being able to be intimidating without raising their voice always gives me the chills.

But yes, it's not easy, and very few actors could do it.
The hand signal is actually explained beautifully in the books, and knowing what it means will actually give you better insight into when and why its used! The passage from the first book right after Katniss volunteers for Prim:
"Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim's place, and now it seems I have become someone precious. At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me. It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love."
So true, its a shame its never really explained in the movies.

Although I’ve never read the books, I think the filmmakers did a pretty good job of conveying the significance of that gesture in the first movie via visual storytelling. Still, the straight-from-the-page context adds an even deeper level of meaning which I find both badass and heartbreaking in equal measure
The painting of Rue on the floor wasn't made by the game makers, but was actually done by Peeta, as his performance evaluation. You can even see a bit of the paint still on his hands, when he walks past Katniss. The game makers did NOT appreciate this in the book, and tried to hide it from Katniss, by covering it up with a mattress.
It’s good that you mention this. I think they did a bad job of showing that in the movie. Every reactor I’ve watched thought it was Snow/the Hunger Games team putting it there to mess with Katniss instead of Peeta doing it as an *F you* to the Capitol.
Yes! They also I think failed to show Peeta’s intention behind it. Not only did he do it as a big fuck you to the Capitol, but most importantly he did it to ANGER the gamemakers so they’d focus on him instead of Katniss. This thus plays into Katniss’ reaction aswell. She isn’t just sad anout Rue but futhermore driven with intent on leaving an even bigger mark than Peeta. As the person who knows him best she sees what he’s trying to do, and thus wants to prevent focus being aimed at him. At the end they both try their best to “outshine” each other in angering the gamemakers, to protect the other.

@@khaotictrash - Yep! But in the book she did it because she knew Peeta had painted Rue. She knew it was an F you to the Capitol and was afraid for him. She wanted to outdo his F you to take the heat off of Peeta so she hung Seneca Crane.
The way the movie made it look to some people was that the Capitol had Rue painted on the floor to make Katniss go crazy (like they did with beating Cinna in front of her) and she responded by hanging Seneca Crane.
I never understood how people could miss these details. I always notice things like the paint on Peeta's hands. And hello, Peeta decorates cakes, and paints camouflage. In the books Victors have to have a special talent after they win, and Peeta's is obviously painting. (Katniss pretends to be an apprentice to Cinna IIRC). But even without that, isn't it obvious Peeta painted Rue as a reminder to the Gamemakers that what they do is barbaric?! Like duh.
I’m glad you caught in that Peeta was trying to save Katniss with the pregnancy surprise at the interview! It’s one of my favorite parts, really pulls forward how much hypocrisy the Capitol is capable of. They have no problem seeing children straight up murk each other but as soon as an unborn is brought up there is outrage. I love these books/movies, they really make you question the world

I remember the DAY i read that line. I was telling myself "i need to sleep i need to stop reading" (cause the book was already so engaging) the Peeta drops that BOMB and I was shocked as heck, what a genius

I tried to get my sister into the books (she used to hate reading), so I read it out loud for her. Her reaction to that part in the book was hilarious 😂
I remember reading the book, being like "Katniss you dumb girl, say you're pregnant, say you're pregnant" and Katniss being as useless as ever in front of the cameras lol, and then Peeta comes in and I was like "YES KIIIIIIIIING"
That line and the line where you know who is killed in the third book at the end had me shook. 2 twists I never expected.

Peeta was the one painting Rue on the floor. It was his way of showing the gamemaker what they ve done.
I imagined Haymitch suggested that he paint it, as a way to generate anger energy in Katniss. I didn't read the books so maybe that's off base, but I just didn't see it as an accident.

In the books they even covered it up with a matrace so Katniss doesnt see it when she comes in.

@@MARYWTHER Thanks, I think @Das geht dich nix an 's insight from the books explained it. In the movie Peeta gave her that look as they passed on her way into the assessment, so that gave me the idea.
As I said, I haven't read the books. I'm sure there's a lot more depth to all their characters, and that's so common when books have been made into movies. Maybe one day I'll read them.
This film is one of those super rare adaptations where it's AS GOOD AS THE BOOKS. To top it off, the book had some additional side stories (flashbacks of how Joanna won and how Haymitch won) that would've been great to see in film.
It helps that the books are _very_ cinematic but agreed, these are really good adaptations.

I love this movie, but the one thing that I wish they kept in from the books is the fact that Peeta had a prosthetic leg. It's one of the reasons that Mags had to sacrifice herself in the fog scene. Peeta was having such a hard time navigating through the jungle because of his prosthesis.
The thing about the movies is that yes they were dark but the books were so much darker. Peta and Katniss were so lucky they were pretending to be in a relationship because winners that were attractive were pimped out to the highest bidders in the capital as favors to the upper classes.

Wow I don't remember that at all from the books! For me it was the other way around, the movies were darker then the books
@@RE-xv9fp the books are so much darker. The murder of the boy who was running away to district 13 in the first book. His girlfriend later being an avox. Peeta losing his leg. Cato being bitten and mauled by the dogs for hours while Peeta slowly bled out until they'd dragged Catos body to a place where she could get the shot to kill him. And that's just the first book

It’s funny because I just watched that and the Johanna part and she’s not happy with either. I’m hoping that she changes her mind since Finnick and Johanna are awesome!
In the books there's even more horror and despair that was never gonna cut it for a PG-13 rating in the theater. They're so worth checking out if you ever find the time or interest. The POV from Katniss is extremely impactful.
That person you noticed in the background was what they call an Avox in the books. They have their tongues cut out as punishment for being a traitor, rebel, or any other crime the Capitol sees fit. And this is not just a fate limited to the District citizens. There was a Peacekeeper who had tried to intervene during Gale's whipping and he was turned an Avox because of it.
The movies also kind of butchered Gale.

Also, one of the Avox girls turned out to be Katniss' childhood friend (not sure if this was in Book 1 or Book 2)
It pissed me off more the way thy treat them. Darius gets paired with the red-haired girl from the woods and even Effie refers to them as "matching set". like a pair of fucking horses
Finnick was by far my favorite character in the books. His story is so tragic but great.

I wish they would have made an extended version of the movie so they could have included Haymitch's backstory. He was the winner of the 50th game and won by exploiting a flaw with the game environment (forcefield). I think Snow had his family killed for that, but it's been a long time since I read the book so I might be wrong.
Snow did have Haymitch's family killed, you remembered right. No wonder he stayed drunk all that time; why bother being sober when you're watching the people in your district you're responsible for training to survive the games keep dying year after year? And that there's nothing you can do about it?
I thought it was Joanna who exploited the force-filed by accident, cuz when she threw her axe the 'invisible' wall bounced it back.

@@lynxvex Joanna won by acting like she was weak and towards the end she went berserk with the axe, fooled everyone. Since she was a beautiful young woman, Snow wanted to pimp her out and she obviously didn’t want that, he got her family killed too.
Some of these backstories are just crazy.
This is the book/movie you really see her start to fall for Peeta. Him offering to do the talking on the tour in the beginning at rue’s district, his snarky comments to the game maker, him comforting the tribute that sacrificed herself for him, the kiss, etc…she’s realizing she needs him and that he is comforting for her. Like Haymitch said “you could live a thousand lifetimes and never deserve that boy”, she starts to realize how important Peeta is to her. The painting of Rue on the floor was Peeta, he said he wanted to show the game makers what they did and to hold them accountable for her death. He and the other tributes were saying and doing anything they could to stop the games.
The books obviously include a lot more about Finnick & Johanna, they’re two of my favorites. Along with Haymitch, their backstories are terrible & sad.
Haymitch’s games was a quarter quell like this one, only the special rules for his was that there were twice as many tributes. He found a flaw in the arena -the force field- and used that to win his games after watching his district partner die in his arms. The Capitol then killed his entire family and girlfriend. He has severe PTSD after this and having to mentor kids and send them off to the games for 25 years.
Finnick won his games at 14- youngest ever- and received a trident as a gift during the games- the most expensive gift anyone had ever received. The Capitol and the people were obsessed with him because he was so attractive, and his story only gets sadder from there (I don’t want to spoil anything). Annie, the girl he was yelling for, was a tribute he mentored and fell in love with, she went insane after her games. Katniss and Finnick become good friends in this book and become very close in the next one. Their friendship is beautiful.
Johanna is one of the youngest victors in this one (21) and she won her games by pretending to be weak throughout training and the games, but then slaughtering the remaining tributes with her axe in the end. She was also considered attractive and refused to be prostituted out by the Capitol, so they killed everyone she knew, that’s what she was referring to when she was yelling in the arena. Her and Finnick are best friends, Katniss notices they won’t do anything or make decisions without each other during the games, and mentions there is extreme trust between them based off “years of friendship and maybe something more.” Johanna’s stripping in the elevator was to try to read Katniss because all the other victors thought she was pretending to be innocent and pure. The next book has a lot of developments/friendship between Johanna and Katniss, but they completely leave it out of the movie.
I love this comment. So well explained. If anyone is curious what made Annie go insane during her game - her district partner was beheaded in front of her, and then a dam broke in her arena, drowning all of the tributes except for her. She only survived because she was from district 4, and thus the best swimmer. Her game was the 70th, the year before Johanna’s.
You’ve obviously read the book. I have a question about the first movie. When Peeta is on stage doing his interview with the host. He says they have better showers. The host sniffs him but then when Peeta leans over to sniff him the crowd gasps. Why is that? I have an idea but I’m probably wrong.

@@raimeyewens7518 i think it was more to show the disparity between the capitol and districts. when peeta leans in, even though he charmed many citizens, they still see him as district 12, seperate from caesar, the host. when peeta leans in thats his own act of defiance. its played off really well by the host in the books, he shrugs it off and sniffs him back. it was meant to show how good the host was at directing the capitol viewers on what to think. which is why he looks so startled when the victors grab hands in catching fire, even he is losing control.
I love the how Effies views started to change in this movie, she grew close to Peeta and Katniss and realised that the people in the districts aren’t anything like the people in the capitol have been brainwashed them to be.
Effie goes on SUCH a journey, she's a great character

Also remember, she’s never had the opportunity to know the tributes before either. She ‘hangs’ around them for like 2 weeks prior to the games and never sees them again. But this time, she had two tributes that became victors and she saw the aftermath of the games on them and really got to see that they were people too. I think without that attachment, it was easy for her to just go with the status quo.

Mags death in the books was so much more brutal, Katniss described it as, “falling to the ground in a horrible dance" she also mentioned hearing her screams
First one is great, but this is the best of the series for me. The acting goes up a notch, the tension and atmosphere is building throughout, the stakes are clearly so much higher. Katniss never fully knows what is happening, so for us the hints are there without it being spoon-fed. It’s everything that a sequel should do but the vast majority fall well short. This does not.

I totally agree, the rest of the Hunger Games movies are quality but Catching Fire is genuinely a great film, I don’t know what makes it so rewatchable but I’ve seen it several times more than any of the others
Absolutely! The rewatch and personally the comfortability in it even though it’s dark as hell!
unfortunately, this is the first and only brilliant sequel to the franchise. Mockingjay part 1 and 2 are quite mediocre, not bad but not great at all, and that's such a shame considering the quality of the first two installments of this saga.
jennifer really is an amazing actress, i cant imagine katniss being played by anyone else. also, the hunger games sequel is actually one of the bests adaptations from books ever, its really real and thoughfull every little detail.

And yet they let Joanna in on the secret. But I guess she's always angry, and not keeping her cool is her default setting.
@@RickLeMon the attention also wasn't on Joanna as much as on Katniss. If Katniss misspoke, people would hear it and wonder, while if Joanna spewed something out, no-one would really listen.
@@RickLeMon Joanna, despite being...a lot, is actually shown to be very cunning in the book. During her Games, she faked being a crybaby coward during the interviews so that no one would perceive her as a threat, then proceeded to destroy her competition. And when things went south during the climax, she was able to think quickly and save Katniss from being captured/killed.

It’s ok to be a fan but don’t cape for Katniss so hard you can’t see her flaws.
@@realSimoneCherie Absolutely agree. I've read like half the first book, so I'm only going by the movies, but Joanna is probably my favorite character. My take is that she uses her anger and chaos (undoubtedly genuine, but also perhaps intentionally exaggerated) as a misdirect. To survive the years in the Capitol's spotlight, you would need to be good at long-term strategy (and sticking to it). She could blurt out the entire plan and no one would listen or take her seriously, but she wouldn't because she knows what she's doing.
Katniss on the other hand, might be a competent tactician, but a lifetime of barely scraping by does not encourage long-term planning. And since Katniss never wanted to be the symbol or face of anything (until Snow's actions forced her into it), I have to wonder what she would've made of the plan had she known about it
In the books the morphlings love Peeta because he draws them pictures. They are both so heavily medicated they can barely function but he spends time with him. She is in on the plan to save them but she saves him because she loves him too. X
It was magical to witness these movies in theaters. The scene where Katniss gives a speech about Rue, and district 8 does that whistle and hand signal in her honor, the entire theater also raised up three fingers to mimic the scene. It was incredible to share such an emotionally impactful moment with fellow fans of the series. Bravo to the film director, actors, and original Hunger Games author. The books and movies were done so fantastically.

YES!! I went to all the premiers, even saw Catching Fire multiple times in theater. It was just too good not to see it again. Makes me miss when the series was still being made and released

Am guessing this was in the US? You aint gonna be getting that in no English cinema! 😂😂😂. Although, this movie is the first I ever saw on its opening night and everyone around was clearly a fan cos everyone applauded at the end which is very unbritish!
Side note: Anyone else notice how Nikki looks at Steven when they give their reaction at the end. When Steven really gets hyped up about something Nikki just looks at him and smiles. You can tell she appreciates the passion he has for movies. They’re too cute.
I really grew to love Effie. She was annoying and she still always is but she really does care for Katniss and peeta. She’s definitely a fun character.
I think Elizabeth Banks' portrayal injects a lot of humanity into Effie. Since the books are Katniss' POV, we kind of perceive Effie how she perceives Effie. She's definitely more likable in the movies than the books in my opinion. The Alan Rickman Effect.
Yes, which is why Suzanne Collins rang up the director and told them there's no way they could have the Mockingjay without Effie, even if she's barely in the books. Elizabeth Banks made that character amazing!
Effie is like your kinda racist grandma. She's a good person who really cares, but believes in some things that aren't necessarily true because of her world and upbringing.
Effie is integral to the books, I think. Because you usually get two kinds of capitol people: people like Cinna, who see the games for what they are and try to safely rebel against them,. or people like Snow who are ruthless and calculating, but Effie represents the screaming, scandal hungry people of the capitol we only see glimpses of, the fashion obsessed viewers, for whom it is so easy to forget they're watching children slaughter each other when they watch it from a screen at a party in their fancy mansions over dinner. But Effie gets denied that distance as the story progresses. Suddenly, she gets to know these two people. She sees them as persons- and when they for once don't die and get replaced, she sees the capitol turn back on all its promises- they're her friends now, and the Capitol keeps coming for them. Just watch the amazingly well executed difference of Effie in the Reaping scenes in 1 and 2. In the first, she fervently speaks along with the trailer, as if its religion. In the second, she hesitates, drags it out, is uncharacteristically somber. Because Effie isn't a bad character, per se, just a person in a very comfortable life who always had the privilege of forgetting, of ignoring, of turning to frivolites, until that veil is lifted. (And without wanting to spoil, it's also important that while she learns that the tributes and districts deserve better, she never really learns to hate the capitol, because the conditiong is so deep in her) Effie is important because she is a symbol of why the games even work, why people let that happen- but also a sign of hope, that that can change.
@@ginster458 I always saw first movie Effie as the Effie with her guard up. At this point in her career she’s been escorting frightened children to their deaths for years with only Haymich as the one, drunken constant. I figure at that point you’ve either developed a way to distance yourself from that or quit. However once Katniss and Peeta win they’re “safe” for Effie to become attached to. There isn’t a timer on their lives anymore and further, they’re going to be Effie’s co-workers every year for the foreseeable future. By the second movie Effie WANTS to foster a relationship with them only to suddenly have that cut out from under her by the quarter-quell. She can’t bring herself back to her normal levels of apathy though, so she just keeps being awesome. At least that’s my viewpoint on what’s going on.
One thing that I love about the fashion in this: notice how, although very extravagant and colorful, the clothes in The Capitol still have A LOT of black. The fashion crew explained in a short documentary that the intention behind this is showing how dark their soul is: even though they like colorful fashion, they still enjoy watching kids being forced to kill each other.
Which is an amazing detail from the books when katniss goes to the event at the presidents house and is appalled by them and their callousness towards the tributes. They view them as nothing but entertainment, which is further highlighted by the Capitol reneging on their promise that once a victor has won, they’ll never be forced to go back in.
Catching Fire is arguably my favorite book-to-movie adaptation. It had a darker, dreary edge that the first movie lacked, and though it had some omissions, it still hits all the right beats.
In the book, the beginning scene in the arena depicted even more intense:
"The ground is too bright and shiny and keeps undulating. I squint down at my feet and see that my metal plate is surrounded by blue waves that lap up over my boots. Slowly I raise my eyes and take in the water spreading out in every direction. I can only form one clear thought. This is no place for a girl on fire."
And then the chapter ends there.
That paragraph gave me CHILLS when i first read it, You knew just how much the Game makers wanted to extinguish her and her image. I loved the way it was phrased
Fun fact, all the tributes from Disctrict 1 have those very fancy names like "Velvereen (Velveteen) Glimmer, Marvel, Cashmere or Gloss" to represent their district weatlh. Also, their tributes are called "Careers", since they are trained from an early age (for the Hunger Games) and volunteer to compete.
And by that both district 1 and 2 have had a strong alliance

The fact even Effie Trinket (the lady who reads their names) was like 'I don't wanna do this. I don't wanna be here...' was such a change from last movie... They kept that pretty close to the books.
Knowing Finnick’s backstory and hearing what you guys were saying when he was first talking to katniss without a shirt… I really hope you’re one of those reactors that manage to pick it up during mockingjay pt 2 because most people don’t
Right? I could only wish they'd went more clear about it in MJ2 because Finnick and Joanna are my favorite and their backstories are heartbreaking. Finnick being a forced sex worker and Joanna losing everyone she ever loved. That shit's straight up horrible. And I also get VERY defensive when reactors talk shit about them.

I love that after rewatching Catching Fire, you start to see how so many of the tributes were trying to actually protect Katniss. The comradery of the tributes during this movie (and their anger and hatred for the capital) really makes this movie for me.
Donald Sutherland is phenomenal as President Snow. Him and Jennifer Lawrence in that sit down scene is arguably the best scene in the series. The acting, the dialogue, the expressions is top tier.
the shot of katniss going into the games is one of the most well done shots in the entire franchise. just the camera angles from focusing on katniss to opening up in the arena was chilling.
Can’t wait for the next two reactions, but catching fire is easily my fav.

I dislike Mockingjay part 1 and 2, cinematography wise they are stunning but in terms of pacing and storytelling they're terribly dull imo. on the other hand, Hunger Games and Catching Fire are simply excellent.
This movies are great for one single factor: their screenplay writer was actually the author of the books, Susan Collins herself.
She made sure all the right details were there. I read the books long before the movie adaptation and as a huge fan of the books, I completely fell in love with this franchise. Although the books are much darker, the movies do just enough to keep it PG-13 and satisfy the book fans.
After this, Jennifer Lawrence easily became one of my favorite actresses.
I always thought it was astounding that they managed to get the roots of the book and somehow managed to keep it PG13. The storyline itself is so brutal, trying to keep it under an R rating must have been outrageous!
I will always love this movie. So much. And the book too. The literal last line in it is "Katniss...there is no District 12." It was such a good cliffhanger.
Johanna is one of the best characters in the books and movies. I love that she was the voice that mostly related to the audience cause she was brutal and honest. All we thought, she said it

President Snow was committing a HUGE violation of the treaty with the Hunger Games victors. They were supposed to be guaranteed a LIFE of luxury and to never have to face the Games again but he's doing this to 'kill Katniss legally'

Loved it! One thing that annoys me about the movies is that they make Peeta seem physically weak and dependent. He isn’t in the books at all. In fact, he is described as being extremely strong from lifting 50# bags of flour at the bakery all the time. Katniss is the one that is described as very petite after years of malnutrition. I was still team Peeta all the way, but I wish they had included that. Oh - and Katniss was name by her father after a plant. He brought her into the forest and taught her to hunt but also to collect healing herbs and taught her about plants - what was edible and what wasn’t. That’s how they survived after her dad died - she hunted, gathered, and traded.
I wasn't crazy about who they casted as Peeta in the movie, strictly because of how different he's described in the book. I definitely envisioned someone more intimidating and imposing.

At the dinner table with Haymitch and Effie, Katniss mentions how strong Peeta is from lifting the sacks of flour. She also told Peeta to throw the heavy cylinder/ball during the practice session because the "bad" crew were watching and smirking at him when he fell. .... PEACE to ALL.
Also peeta doesn’t kill like almost anyone. However in the books he kills at least 2 people in the second games plus survives being stabbed in a knee.
My favorite scenes are "will u stay with me" and when Peeta was comforting the morphling. The soundtracks for both of those scenes is intense and emotional. Still get goosebumps 8 years later. Saw this on the big screen, i was suppose to study for a test but I decided to go and see the movie. It was worth it lol
Peeta was kind and caring to a person he hadn't spoken to before that moment. He gave comfort and concentrated on easing her pain.
this scene, specifically in the book too, is what makes Peeta one of my all time favorite characters. In the book, the morphling draws a flowers on peeta’s cheek using her own blood and he just praises her and tells her it’s beautiful 🥺

The painting of Rue on the floor when they did their evaluation wasn't done by the capitol- it was Peeta. The tributes are supposed to show a skill, so he showed his painting, painting Rue in death as honor and defiance- Katniss was so touched she hanged the dummy and wrote Seneca Crane on it, the name of the last Game Maker, that she and Peeta effectively killed by their berry trick
The part in the movie where you see the blood in the glass of champagne is a callback to the actual book in which you find out Presidents Snows back story. In the books it is mentioned that Snow poison the other leaders of Panam to gain absolute power. He took also drank the poison in order to save face but had taken the antidote right away. However, he was left with spot in hi cheek that continues to bleed, which is where the blood came from.

Fun fact: Haymich was the winner of the 50th quarter quell. During that game there were twice as many tributes (48 instead of 24). This was the second quell he is living through.
If either of you guys are book readers and you have the time, I highly recommend giving the novels a read! The movie adaptions are actually really good in my opinion, but the books are fantastic as well.
95% of the time, the book is better than the movie, but the skill of the adaptation is what makes the difference. The books always have the advantage of getting inside the head of the protagonist. The Harry Potter movies were great adaptations as well.
I am Steve. I had less than zero expectations from this franchise.
I watched the first movie when it came out on DVD. Figured I'd see what the hype was.
As soon as the movie ended I ordered the books. Read them in five days. I was hooked.
Now watching Steve get so engrossed in the story makes me like it even more.

I think the reason everyone liked Effie more in this movie than the first.. was because it was obvious she wasn't trying to get too close to them not knowing if they would survive or not... seeing as they lived she grew fond of them :(
This series has unironically one of the best portrayals of PTSD, especially the next two movies when she's disassociating.

I think you can clearly see Katniss falling in love with Peeta in this movie. Also, i need to tell you that Finnick is my absolute favorite character, Catching Fire is my favorite book mainly because of him.
And I'm glad you noticed the Avox, their story got cut out from the movies, they are runaways ore traitors that the capitol punishes by cutting their tongues out and then they spend their lives serving the capitol like slaves.
Also, people always assume that the gamemakers did Rus's painting in the floor to upset Katniss, but that was Peeta's doing (they actually try to cover it in the books). And i think because of that she decided to do the Seneca Crane dummy hanging. And they both received a score of 12 in hopes that they'll be targeted by other tributes.

@@MARYWTHER I think she felt attraction towards him but no necessary love because it was only that kiss (at least that's how i interpreted it). During the second book they get to know each other better and they understand each other pain and trauma from the games, they were getting closer
and they actually didn’t put even a fraction of the reasons she falls in love with him in the movie. in the book you can really see the development of their relationship even as they have to fake it for cameras, which confuses katniss and makes her feel guilty for feeling anything for him. also, they put too much gale in the movies 😭😭 he was never really an option in the books. katniss never loved him. the only time she ever tried was because she felt guilty because he spends a lot of time manipulating her. movie gale is alot different than book gale

2 - the doll Katniss hung up was supposed to represent the game master from the last games, who allowed both Katniss and Peeta to win. To show that she knows they had him killed for it
3 - all the tributes tried to stop the games, hence the baby “news” by Peeta as well
Also, if you remember the weird dogs from the first movie, you will be horrified by how they were supposed to look like from the books 👀

1) As victors the people pretty much OWN you! They can touch you. They can “rent” you. …It’s grotesque. You’ll hear SOME more from Finnick’s character later in the storyline and even though it’s still gross in the movies vie it’s got NOTHING on the book.
2) The painting in the training area of Rue was done by Peta.
I like how they started by hating certain people and then by the end you love them
The books are more horrifying as there's more emphasis on emotional and mental manipulation. There's an important change they made in the movie that sort of works as in the first book, one character loses a leg. For us who had to wait in between the movies, it was torture! It's a tough series of books to read, and there are some subtleties they were able to capture and some not so much. I was team Peeta from the get-go, but it was genuinely confusing who Katniss really loved as the books are from her POV, and since she was confused, so is the reader.
When you rewatch this movie everything that happens in the games makes so much more sense. All the subtle acting just jumps out at you.
if you watch it again knowing their intentions you'll see clearly how plutarch is always trying to protect her in a way, playing snow to do what he wants. also finnick and johanna its amazing
Peeta painted Rue, as his skill. To blame the capital for her death and to say it’s their fault
Snow is intimidating because he's sophisticated evil. He's smart, cunning and ruthless. He doesn't need to raise his voice to intimidate, he just needs to speak because people know he'll follow through with everything he's calmly said.
Even Steven got emotional at Katniss' speech about Rue 😭 that doesn't happen a lot ya'll ~ so awesome to see how impactful this story is for everyone who watches it. Truly a cautionary tale with a lot of relevance. So powerful. 🏞🌸💐 For Rue!
The change in effie’s and haymitch’s characters from movie one to movie two... they always lose their tributes. So they cannot get attached to them. They won, so they let themselves get attached and now they are going back in. To reference why they attacked cina right as she went up in the tube is because if any of the tributes move off their podiums before the countdown is complete, it explodes and they die on the spot... and they really really want her dead.

6:40 it doesn't matter that they didn't do anything. Everything in the capitol from the stones they walk on to the clothes they wear to the food they eat is gotten from the districts. They didn't attack because of aggression. They attacked to spread fear across the districts cause if the districts revolt the capitol dies
I really liked Effie's character development in this movie, mainly because you can see that she is now starting to see how cruel the capital is acting towards the other districts, and that she is genuinely worried when Katniss and Peta have to go back into the games. It's almost as if the wool has been pulled from her eyes in away.
I love all the little details that aren't immediately noticeable. My favourite in this one is Peeta having three of his nails painted black to represent the salute, and he had it right in the midst of the party at President Snow's mansion. Even more impressive considering this was after seeing the old gentleman killed for the same gesture. He took such a risk getting that done. I think he had to have been let in on the plan at some point because he does even more afterwards, especially the baby reveal.
Honestly I love Effie sm and you will learn to love her also. And this movie shows that side of her. You can see how sorry she feels for Katniss about her being the only option at the reaping and her relief when she pulls haymitch's name and not Peeta's and then back to stress and hesitance when Peeta volunteers.

And cliché I know but the books are incredible. The lore is so detailed, the characters, the world building, and the heart. I’d never shed tears at a book before but that was it!
The movie adaptation introduced a whole generation to YA dystopian thrillers and I think it’s got to be one of the best in its genre!

Me too! My only thing with the last two movies is because it was one book split in two, it drags out a little bit in movie form and the last book is mostly about Katniss’s mental state. This is very hard to re-create in a movie. It was way more impactful from Katniss‘s point of view. You can see her healing from and being held back by her trauma

To answer 2 of your questions: the scene at the table with the girl in red with the squid games vibe in the books is captured at the beginning of book one when Katness and the Hemsworth guy are in the woods and see the space ship. She is trying to escape to the woods because she had to put her name in the drawing every day to feed her family. Her tongue is cut out and she is made a slave serving contestants for the rest of her life. She later helps Katness and Peta (in the books only).
And yes turkeys are jerks. My mother has a black bear on her property and can just tell it to move on as long as she doesn't surprise it but she can't leave her house when the turkeys come out of the woods to feed about once a week.
Accutall tv the avox is in the first book as well. The scenes in catching fire your thinking about is a flashback

I love your channel so much. I discovered it during 2020 when I stumbled upon your Black Mirror Reactions and have always admired how the two of you always connect with whatever you're seeing. I also deeply admire and empathise with how Nikki gets so invested emotionally as I'm the same. I also have mad props that you two actually pay attention to the film/series and provide critique unlike other reaction channels who try to just pass off joke after joke. All shade intended lol

40:50 even worse if you didn’t realize it by the clock layout: she happened to be in that area of the clock when it started with the jabberjays. Her and Fin had to listen to the sounds of those they loved dying/tortured/screaming for a full hour before the force field was let down. Haven’t read the books in a long time but I think fin at least started and maybe ended by covering kats ears during that hour. Most rough of all those scenarios imo.
Also the books are even better I suggest reading them.
I wish that the production team of the Hunger Games would have worked in Divergent. Probably my two favorite books.
It's a shame you didn't watch the IMAX version. When Katniss goes up in the tube the screen opens up and stays like that throughout the arena scenes. It's the best use of the format that I have seen on film.

Cashmere and gloss both came from district one where the people name their children after luxury items because it's a District that produces Luxury items to the Capitol and are generally well fed and taken care of. The children in District 1 and 2 both have academies where they train to become Victor's and many of them want to be in the Hunger Games

I always wondered what it'd be like if Snow did decide to hand pick the tributes himself and forced Prim into the 75th. Katniss would have to mentor her own sister.

Seeing this for the 1st time when it released in theater, I literally screamed out loud, "Noooooo!!!" when it ended like that! 😅 I was so invested in the movie, it was insane when it just... ended suddenly as it did!

People always miss the fact that it was Peeta who did the mural of rue on the ground in the training center. He did it as a statement to the capitol of the innocent life they took, and the countless others they take with no regard. It’s why he momentarily looks at katniss as she walks by him for her turn.
in cinematography not many sequels were better than the first movie and Catching Fire was definitely very good. Thank you for the reaction

I was first introduced to these books by a former student. She mentioned that at a certain part in the third book, she flung the book across her room and refused to read any more. That's why you both should read them, even though they are written for YA.

Looking at this movie again, I'm amazed by how much of the Quarter Quell was thought up before hand. The water being their main source of shelter, suits perfectly to Finnick, with him being from district 4. The lightning as a clock, perfect for Beetee to make a classic move. Seawater wave and Tsunami would have been passable obstacle to those who could climb high, like Johanna and Katniss.... Interesting!

this is literally one of the best adaptations i have ever seen. arguably it's even the no. 1. they got EVERYTHING. the ONE thing they didn't put in is the "it starts at midnight" line from plutarch; but i feel like visually that would spoil that he's on katniss' side way too early. SO IF THAT'S THE ONLY THING......... IT'S A PERFECT ADAPTATION. I LOOOOVE THIS MOVIE
