  • Today I’m sharing with you scenes from an old Maine Hunting Camp. Photo’s were taken from the 1940’s, 50’s, & 60’s. My father, grandfather, uncles, & cousins used to hunt deer, wild hares, birds, bear, and fished as well. Any game they got helped to feed themselves, and their families. Sadly those family members are gone now. I grew up hearing “some” of the hunting tales (only as many tales as a little girl was allowed to hear back then). Growing up, I have wonderful memories of going “up to camp” with my parents, sister, and Beagle. It used to be a wonderful, quiet, & peaceful place, with no running water or electricity. Great memories from way back when. ~ Kat

Hard to put into words how those snapshots caused a flood of emotions for me. I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived some of those moments in remote wilderness camps. As crazy as things may be today, even a weekend of getting together with old friends off the grid is soul cleansing.

Thank you so much for sharing that Jeff. This is why I made these three videos, because for some people it brings back fond memories from years ago. I can remember my dad getting ready for some of these hunting trips, when I was growing up. He always came home in November with a deer and a couple Christmas Trees, all tied onto the car (not together mind you) 🙂 I think the deer was tied into the hood of the car and the trees were on the car roof!

Yes the Christmas trees were a sure thing the deer not so much. Thanks for your work the images and music go well together brings back memories. I was only a boy at the time most of the pictures were taken I’m jealous of the quality of their lives back then. Thanks again

Take heart! There is still a lot of the hunting tradition being passed down, at least here in Montana. This was a lovely tribute to the "good old days" and absolutely gorgeous music. Thank you, Kat!

What a great montage of memories and a perfect choice of music as well… my gr-grandmother’s boarding house which I grew up in hosted 20-25 hunters every deer season and was a special time with some great memories for me. I also have many pics from days past of the friends and traditions made on my family farm in the Catskills of NY. The old ash tree finally died but not before the numerous big bucks that adorned its lower branches from successful hunts had made their way into some incredible pictures… to see the 8 big racks on those deer and the proud hunters posing under them is a long tradition that lives in that 8 x 10 I cherish in my game room..

Myself and one buddy I left we camp for 10 days of bow hunting 10 days or shotgun hunting. Used to be five other groups oh guys no one left. The worst by younger generation wants nothing to do with the sport. I will enjoy the old photos takes me back to a simple way of living. THANK YOU

Hi Richard, No I know what you meant. It seems to be a dying sport. It’s sad to see that the younger generation doesn’t appreciate the freedom to hunt & catch wild game, that is so much better for them. Healthier than anything you will find at the grocery store today probably. I grew up with venison. My dad is in some of those pictures, and I have another video coming out shortly, if them all. It was always so incredibly peaceful there. No electricity, the water came from the natural spring. Whenever I put these videos together it’s kind of bittersweet. I wish my dad was still living, but he’s gone. He was the last original member. Now it’s another group. I appreciate you sharing. Thanks so much! All is good 🙂

My Grandfather and his Best Friend built a camp in Northern Maine (closest town was Patton) we hunted there for years and took many large White Tail bucks. Got my first buck with a single shot .410 shotgun with a slug not 200 yards from the camp at 7 years old. Gramp taught me and my brother all about weapons and how to Properly use them safely and with accuracy. We had spent many an hour with single shot bolt action .22s learning how to be still behind the weapon. Years later those drills helped me easily pass Sniper School at MTU, Fort Benning, GA.

It is a real blessing to have old family photographs. When I hear of fires, floods, etc. I always think of the terrible loss of evidence of who they are and where they came from found in old photos, documents, mementoes, letters, etc. Memories are wonderful but they only go back as far as you do but the "paper trail" can go back many generations. Thanks for sharing your precious past.

Thank you Eldon. These were slides that I received from a family member when she discovered them in a collection of items that once were her husbands, and prior to that they were her father’s. No one seemed to want them, so when I was offered them, I was so excited. I don’t have a slide projector, but I was able to put the slides up to light and take a picture of each one. From there I edited each picture into what you see right now. I am happy to share them here for others to see and enjoy. Growing up in the 1960’s I have fond memories of the old hunting camp. He was on his way to the outhouse, and upon his return, it was discovered he got locked out of the camp! Of course it was all done in fun. Oh yea, when hunting was real. I’m 78 years old and the uniform of the day was red and black checked woolrich. Kept you warm and for the most part dry. Had the high wool socks up over your pants and most of us used no scopes. They weren’t real reliable back then like they are today. Stick a sandwich and a big Hershey bar in the game pocket of your coat and head out. Glass lined pint thermos bottle kept the coffee warm till about 10am. Usually had it drank by then anyhow. It was also carried in the game bag. Gear was a short section of rope and a knife. Great memories.
