    Oh my goodness - major homesickness here 😊 I grew up 30 min drive from Edinburgh and Linlithgow was one of my childhood haunts. I went to school in Edinburgh. I have been living in Sweden since 1979 and haven't been back to Scotland since 2000. I am so envious. Lovely to see you with Vanissia and Jule.
    An absolutely lovely video, thank you ❤

    Don't put it in your stash yet. put it back in clear plastic and freeze again then put it in bright sunlight and heat to make sure eggs don't hatch and reinfest. moth eggs go dormant in cold temperatures. The wool festival looks like fun!

      I didn’t see any moths around this particular batch that I bought but the one skein I brought I immediately put back in the freezer and will frost and take out to lay out on a really hot day again to hope for the best!

    I got DK yarn from New Lanark mill 8 years ago when I knitted the scollay cardigan by Karie Westernann and still wear it now…. Where I live in Scotland we get small ‘field moths’ at this time of year, fortunately I haven’t had any issues with yarn or knits being destroyed by them Thanks for sharing 😊

    thanks for putting this video Marlene, what a trip down memory lane. By the way, Edinburgh is most definitely not that rainy, cold yes, but rain not at all. Happy to hear you got one of those bright blue sky weekends to go to the festival, and you had the chance to go to all the places in your bucket list. Love all your purchases, but Vanissia´s champagne cardigan has to be the most special as well as Jo´s knitting bag 🐮

  • @bigblackdogfiberarts
    @bigblackdogfiberarts 5 месяцев назад +1

    Ok, in order to kill off wool moths by freezing (including their eggs), the item must be stored at 0F/-19C for a minimum of 72 hours. So that means not 72 hours from when you place it in the freezer, but 72 hours after the item in question reaches the correct temperature. A week is better. Make sure the item is in a sealed bag. The average refrigerator freezer is not set to be cold enough to kill moths. Also, the freezer on your refrigerator is likely “frost free”, which means that it cycles above freezing regularly to avoid having to defrost it yourself. It will NOT kill off moths or their eggs, and there is even some evidence that it might make the eggs hatch once you take it out.

    • @whiskyandwool
      @whiskyandwool 5 месяцев назад +1

      Seconding this. Freezing is not enough to kill any eggs. I’d bag that yarn separated from your other yarn. Keep it isolated. What does dislodge the eggs & remaining larvae is washing, but you’d need to reskein into hanks for that. You can also try heating in the oven on the lowest temp, about 140F. Take the ball band off as that will burn. Good luck!!

    • @marleneknits
      @marleneknits  5 месяцев назад

      thank you both so much for the insights!! really helpful and I’ll try and kind of incorporate it all! for now my one skein that’s with me is in sealed bag in the freezer again (the rest is still on its way from scotland..) I‘ll try the heating method too possibly and or wash it and will definitely keep it away from my other stash! 🤞🏼🙂

    • @bigblackdogfiberarts
      @bigblackdogfiberarts 5 месяцев назад

      @@marleneknitsThe easiest way to heat it is to skein it all up into hanks so it is loose (do this outdoors so any eggs that might fall out aren’t in your home). Once they are all nice and loose, but them into a black, plastic, carpenter’s waste bag and put them in the sun on a really hot day. You want the heat to really penetrate every strand. And you want it in the sun as long as possible. It gets hot enough in the bag to set dye (yes, I have dyed this way in the summer), so it is somewhere around a simmer for temp. If you can have the bag sitting on pavement like a driveway or concrete patio, even better as they will absorb the heat and reflect it back into the bag. If you spritz the yarn before putting it in, the moisture will heat things up even more quickly and it’ll boil the little buggers. You’ll just have to hang the hanks up to dry after.I’d likely do this for multiple days in a row. M*ths scare the bejeebers out of me.
